The building and setting is a fine example of the towns natural beauty and history. Perched on the banks of a small estuary the spot is ideal for a pitstop pint with it's rocky outcrop that serves as an intriguing play spot for kids to splash and look for crabs. Unfortunately, this is all the spot is currently suited for. The food is below average pub grub and a cynic might think it's a menu designed to exploit passing trade rather than provide any sort of dining experience. Out of season the clientele is your older patron, there's little chatter or atmosphere inside and the food is bland and underwhelming. I went for haddock and chips, something you'd think would be a safe bet for a pub that's practically in the sea, but alas the batter was gooey, the haddock was barely warm and there was no flavor. The homemade chips were ample but soggy and the mushy peas were the grey side of green. Frustratingly all the condiments were sachets, even the salt and vinegar, which is never a good sign. The tartar sauce came out of the packet warmer than the food. The staff there were friendly and welcoming but there was nothing from the dining experience that would pull me back for anything other than a passing drink. Rather than a busy menu of this and that it would perhaps be better suited to specializing in something, seafood being the obvious choice, and focus on doing it well.

We visited The Old Scalby Mill during a few days away in Scarborough North Bay. It was a very pleasant 15/20 mins walk along the prom from our accommodation & is situated in a lovely spot at the end of the prom just past the Sea life Centre. The pub is lovely, spotlessly clean & has a real warm & cosy feel to it. We met the owner & staff who really were fab, it was almost like meeting up with old friends. It was a beautiful early evening when we visited so we decided to sit outside & in doing so, we met a couple of the regulars, who were equally as welcoming. We hope to try the food next time we're in North Bay as the menu sounded lovely, we'd definitely recommend to friends & family & will make sure to revisit T O S M next time we're in the area. Update, back in the area 2yrs later, had a few drinks & a bite to eat. Awesome service, lovely pub & super friendly staff + chips, just like the ones my mum made when growing up, what could be better!

We used to love Scalby Mill but, since our last trip, pre covid, it appears to have gone downhill somewhat. Although hubby had a v nice steak pie my small haddock was definitely NOT haddock. The young chef was adamant that it was. I settled for a replacement of scampi which I enjoyed but it meant hubby had finished his before mine arrived. The young waiting staff were v inattentive and when I asked for ketchup the response was , "yeah, I'll get it in a minute"...shame as the pub is in a v nice location and used to be a gem.

We, as a family of 6, decided to call in at The Old Scalby Mill to get some lunch and a drink. There was a small queue out the door, but nothing too bad. When we got to the bar, we asked if they had seating inside for 6 ( plenty of available seating outside but it was rather blowy ), and although they were full inside, they managed to accommodate us. The food was all prepared to order ( I assume the jacket spuds were already cooked ) and was top quality. I had the ba on cheese burger, which was probably the best burger I've ever had. It was a proper handmade burger, and there was no excess fat on the bacon. The onion rings were massive, bigger than my sons hand, in fact. All in all, it was a great lunch experience. Everyone enjoyed their food, and there were clean plates all around.

This pub is very popular and it's location is awesome. The pub is only small as it is an old mill and sometimes maybe queuing out of the door to get to the bar. The atmosphere is the best ever, everytime I have been there as been strangers talking to each other, you could be sat out side and a family would just start a conversation. I like that you can go outside on the seawall and drink your beer. Kids can play in the seacut area of the sea.
