We visited the restaurant in June ( I have been away so couldn’t write this till now) and booked for a group of 16 ladies at 4.30. We were welcomed and looked forward to our preordered meal. The starters were fine but when the main courses started to arrive it took quite a while to serve everyone. One lady waited so long that the rest of her table had finished their meal (she had only ordered potato skins with cheese) and used glasses and the dishes from the starters were not cleared away. When the desserts were served the dishes we had used previously were not cleared either. Several people ordered crumble and custard. However only one small jug of custard was provided for 5 people and when we requested more the staff were quite reluctant saying that they had no more jugs and by the time it finally came the crumble was now cold. The crumble also had solid lumps which people couldn’t eat for fear of seriously breaking their teeth. Some of the meals were fine but the chicken in the Caesar salad had been over fried, was hard and the salad only consisted of lettuce. The chicken and chorizo risotto was stodgy. Drinks were very expensive. The staff started out being very pleasant but as the afternoon went on they were not so helpful and were quite rude a one point. Tables were finally being cleared as we left. I could understand if they were rushed off their feet but this was not the case as we were the only people eating at that time. Our group were very disappointed especially as this is an annual meal so it means a lot to us. I'm afraid we will not be returning.

Stayed here with family for a night to celebrate my dads 83rd birthday. Had a fantastic time, rooms excellent and food was delicious. We had evening meal and breakfast and all enjoyed, being next to the open fire was an added bonus. Staff were all friendly, efficient and attentive. The owner made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay, you can definitely tell she puts her heart and sole into the place, which is stunning. Beds are comfortable and we all had a great nights sleep. We are planning to return for another stay just as a little treat. Price wise- exceptional value for money. Would recommend to anyone.

Plenty of space and clean.Had to pre book a time and food for breakfast. The evening we ate and the pub which was lovely. Good choice of food and it was very tasty. I would highly recommend the potato skin starter and the stick toffee pudding.Breakfast was a full english.

We booked here as we were staying just along the road and noticed they do gluten free options which my girlfriend requires. We were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to our table they quickly took our drinks order and swiftly brought them to us, the bar looked busy the dining room was starting to fill up when we arrived. All tables were socially distanced and sanitizer was available. we both opted for the hunters chicken which was lovely and a huge portion, overall great food at great price will be sure to visit again if in the area

Considering the close proximity to Consett it is set in quite a pretty location with some pleasant walks on the doorstep or within a short drive. Bar/dining areas have a very nice ambience with an interesting eclectic display of paraphernalia. Our meals were very good & reasonably priced.Although only one hand pulled real ale on our visit it was in good condition & fairly priced. All the staff were very friendly & efficient. Our room was spacious, warm & clean but the soundproofing between rooms needs improving.Mobile reception seemed hit & miss so whilst not critical WiFi in the letting rooms would have been useful. Also the external fabric of the premises is looking a little tired & in need of renovation. In general we enjoyed our brief stay!

Visited for Sunday roast with family. Food lovely, but not above other places visited. The let down was the service. Very poor. Had to wait quite a while for the sauces & extra gravy we asked for. The gravy jug was so small it wasn't sufficient for everyone. We saw that another table had to go hunting to find someone to bring more gravy for them. Perhaps it would work better if each waitress had their own tables. As it was they were scurrying about getting all confused. They were friendly, you couldnt say otherwise, but lacked in professional ism, and that only comes with training and guidance. Needs someone at the helm! Wont be going back in a hurry. Beautiful surroundings tho.

I Would first like to start with ....the staff were lovely!! The room we got , wasn't upto standard. The carpet was stained , the room was full of dust , which set off my allergies. The heating wasn't working in the rooms . The staff did say it would be fixed within the hour and these things do happen! I just couldn't stay in that room.We paid £49 on a wowcher deal and I'm pleased it wasn't full price .It would be lovely if it was clean .If you're going to have these types of rooms ...with trinkets and fake flowers ect .You need to dust !!!! That horrid pink carpet needs cleaned or ripped up .The bar and staff were lovely ...also the bar needs dusted .My husband was upset that I was disappointed. We've had a busy year and he's going away with work alot this year ( ARMY ) so he wanted to have some quality time .He felt so bad that on the was home he drove to the Grand hotel Gosforth .He asked to see the best room available, which was the suit ...which was lovely and checked us in .We had the best time cost us £88 so it all worked out in the end !

We visited today on a cold frosty December day and the real fire was very welcoming .Beautiful little place and everywhere you look there’s something interesting to look at, lots of lovely little antiques around. We had Sunday lunch one chose turkey the other 2 of us chose the mixed meat which was lamb beef and pork.Omg honestly the best Sunday lunch I have ever had ,yorkies were huge, veg perfect piping hot and lovely gravy. The staff were nice and friendly ,lovely views out the window .The only thing that let this lunch down was the rhubarb crumble ,more like a rhubarb soup with hardly any crumble topping on and was barely warm ,custard in a little jug and it was stone cold ,had to ask to have it re heated and couldn’t eat it with the crumble as it was a soup like consistency although custard was nice ,had the rhubarb been strained a bit and more topping it would have been nice ,but I think it was about £5.50 ,and not delightful at all.I wouldn’t let this put you off though and I can’t wait to try this hidden gem again

Awful food, issues with two meals, one ‘resolved’, other apparently ‘looked fine’ - oil needs changing in the fryer. Whole place could do with a shake up and a clean. Feel sorry for the women taking the food out as the management send them to deal with the issues. Went based on a recommendation but definitely won’t be back, good luck getting a sensible answer out of the deputy manager who just seemed to want an argument

Visited here today for the first time in 4 years. I was absolutely disgusted with the whole experience. I'm pregnant and had a mixed grill and explained I needed my egg hard. My gammon and steak very well cooked. (Pregnancy reasons). My gammon came out barely cooked and my egg runny. So my partner asked the chef politely if this could be cooked a bit more. Then the rang the bell for service to our table and the chef (Kim I believe was her name) spoke to the waitress and said go and see what's wrong with that table will you. So the waitress came over and took my plate and they picked off my gammon and said they will cook it more. They chef forgot to cook me a new egg. So the waitress soon returned with the greasy gammon on a small plate and said right now I will get you a new egg. The rest of my food nearly ate by this point so I said it's ok about the egg I will do without. Then she told the chef and I was getting called and spoke about like you wouldn't believe. (You can see in the kitchen and hear everything). It was like seeing a stroppy child. I'm absolutely appalled by my experience today. £23 for this mixed grill and I've never ate a one as disgusting in my life. This place use to be such a lovely place to eat aswell :(. I will 100% never be returning again. Would avoid at all costs!

After looking at the glowing reviews I booked a superior room through Hotels.com which for some reason gets stuck when trying to leave a review, The setting is lovely and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We had had a long journey back down from the north of Scotland so were in need of a good rest only to be told when shown our room that we would be able to hear noise from the adjoining room and overhead but she would have a word and ask them to aware of other occupants she also pointed out that we had a door to the adjoining room that had been covered over by a wardrobe. The info booklet provided in the rooms does indeed say that it is a old building with no sound proofing in place but that info is a bit late when you have arrived and should be provide in the description on Hotels.com and also on their own website, it would have certainly influenced our decision to book there. After a night of coughing, spluttering and snoring from our neighbours and chatting, stomping footstep and to top it off the sound of guests peeing and farting overhead we didn't wake up fresh and relaxed after a peaceful nights rest as is promised on their website. We had an evening meal and again the staff were lovely and the service was good, the food was your average pub fair but it was tasty and the portion sizes big. the breakfast wasn't so good the scrambled egg and bacon was either over cooked or cooked to early and had dried out being kept warm and the fresh tomatoes undercooked and hard. If wifi is a must for your stay there is only reception available in the bar area. To sum up, if you want a pretty setting, great staff, an olde worlde room that needs some TLC and can sleep through a thunder storm you would be okay booking a room here.

Another day out with my fellow friends sees me engulf some poor pints and less than average lunch. The service was satisfactory but could be improved, perhaps by checking back on their customers and approaching them with a smile. For a grand total of around £40 the three of us ordered a singular pasta, two beef dinners (with Yorkshire puddings), two Fosters and a pint of Coke. Where should I start? The bowl of pasta was lumpy, with wholesome tomatoes and not ideal for a rough young man. However the beef was fairly nice when I managed to cut the damn thing, but rather let down by the pathetic excuse of “mashed” potato which I’m sure a school canteen would’ve been ashamed to serve. Furthermore I thought the pint of Fosters was weak and rather flat, but I got on with it and drank it anyway. Despite my frequent visitation to the beautiful heritage Consett area I will not, I repeat, I will not be going back anytime soon.

Today was my first time visiting the Mill and will sadly be my last! My starter was nice but the chicken dinner was just ok, was meant to come wrapped in bacon but not an ounce of bacon on my plate and the smallest amount of turnip, I did ask Charlie about the bacon and he said “It’s just one of those things, they must of ran out” wrong answer Charlie, where was the sorry? The customer service was poor and not very professional. The staff came across as very inexperienced and were not paying attention. Our meals arrived but were then taken off us and given to the next table. The staff didn’t seem to know which table ordered what. Again Charlie came in with meals and was asking another table who ordered the fish and we had to shout over and tell him it was for our table. Once we finally got our meals the staff seemed to disappear and couldn’t get anyone’s attention for a while to get extra gravy. No one came and asked us how our meal was, and think that says everything. Overall it was very disorganised

Nice rustic setting – having been built on an actual old flour mill. A flood unfortunately demolished the previous layout of the place so what you'd now see (the mill wheel – that spins) is purely cosmetic. There is a restaurant and bar section – so can chose which is better suited for your group/family outing or if you are with your bros – you can sit in the bar area to enjoy your pint. So the food: I picked the 10oz sirloin steak with a soup of the day starter. All good; the chips was how I like it and the steak was as I like; great all around. As usual – the pint of coke is more expensive than a bottle from Tesco – but that’s expected. Overall – a nice place. Nothing amazing – but nothing to complain about; oh - and the staff and table service is top-notch. On the down side; mobile signal is weak as the place is in a dip and they don’t have free Wi-fi; which is not a bad thing; if you’re going out with friends and family – why the mobile?

The Old Mill was recommended by the site owner at Bonners Lodge, where we were staying in order to visit our son who lives in Newcastle. We wanted a nice restaurant close by to celebrate our pearl wedding anniversary on Monday 23rd July. We didn't book, just turned up and wow, what a fabulous evening we had. Jackie, our waitress, showed us to a table for 5, and proceeded to make our evening just perfect. The food was amazing. Starters...Hubby and I shared the seafood mezze...mmm delicious. Oldest son and girlfriend shared the baked camembert..couldn't resist a taste..yummy, and youngest son had Thai spiced fishcakes..devoured in seconds! Mains...2 of us had the duck, 2 had the belly pork and 1 had the salmon..all were absolutely scrumptious..big shout out for the chef. We didn't have room for dessert sadly as all were good size portions. Even though Jackie was the only member of staff serving in the restaurant, and there were other diners, she made us feel we were the only customers, very attentive, friendly and welcoming...thank you Jackie..you made our celebration a memorable event. The setting, the ambience, the location, the food and service were all 2nd to none. Would definitely visit again and highly recommend to anyone.

We have visited here on numerous occasions, as it has a charming appearance but sadly this time the wait for our food was absolutely ridiculous this time it wasn’t even busy at all and we had to wait over an hour and a half for our food . I wouldn’t of minded if the food had of been nice, but unfortunately it wasn’t I had the fish goujons ( breaded) which were dry and over cooked the chips definitely weren’t homemade and the tartare sauce was on the turn . I did have the calamari for starters which was cooked beautifully. My other half had a chicken casserole which he said was ok if a little bland . It was also cold inside as the open fire was just about finished someone finally put coal on as we were leaving. I ate with my coat on . Think the place needs a bit of a wake up call to be fair area,s are starting to look neglected and the chef needs to realise that one and a half hours for food is not a acceptable time to wait for food at all. Also staff eating their lunches on full view of customers is not good either especially when they haven’t even been served there food.. i will be giving it a miss until the food service/ quality improves.

Booked a table in the restaurant - table for four for a Sunday Lunch. No complaints about the food - the soup was nice and just as well we had it because we were all freezing. There was another couple in the restaurant sitting with their coats on - yes we could have sat in the bar but we had booked the restaurant. It really did spoil the day, the radiators were only just luke warm. What a shame as the food was very nice.

This restaurant is a little way off the beaten track, but well worth a visit. We approached it from Lanchester and were glad the sat-nav knew where to go! There are few signposts in the area and nothing for the Old Mill until you see the flags at the entrance. Their two course lunch (starter and main course) for £9.95 is extremely good value for money although we felt desserts at £5.50 were a little expensive. They also do snacks at lunchtime.

A lovely setting for a relaxing meal for two with a nice glass of wine. Food was very good although the service was a little slow considering it was reasonably quiet. Please and thank you not that common but will be back as the strengths do still outweigh the weaknesses. Careful Team!

The location of the Old Mill immediately makes you feel relaxed and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life . The decoration and feel is rustic and comfortable , there is a choice of seating , the bar which is cosy with its real fire and quiet country pub feel, the restaurant which is more of a formal look with an open view to the kitchen were you can see here and smell the wonderful food on offer, ( and no Ding,Ding,Microwave food) and finally the conservatory which is bright and open with great views of the water wheel . The staff are friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We ate from the lunch time special menu which was less than £10 for 2 courses ,there is a good selection to chose from .

We have being a few times to the old mill and every time we have a lovely meal. On our last visit we went for the specials menu which is really good value for money. The garlic mushrooms on toast starter was delicious followed by homemade quiche with salad and new potatoes all equally as good as our starters. We finished off having a fab cheesecake !!! We love coming too the old mill that we have just booked for Christmas Day which we can't wait.

I have visited Knitsley Mill for a lunchtime meal on three separate occasions. On each occasion, I have found the waitresses to be very pleasant and welcoming. Knitsley Mill is on my doorstep and I can imagine that visitors would be blown away by the location. My relatives stayed overnight recently and were very satisfied with their stay. Although dogs are welcome in the outdoor area, it is a pity that they are not allowed in the bar area. I can't help but think Knitsley Mill will lose trade in the winter months by excluding dog owners.

Love this place and often visit for a qiet drink in a rustic setting. The pub is very natural with the authentic water wheel and lovely natural features. Drinks and food are reasonably priced and well worth a visit if you are looking for that extra special place to dine or just to have a quiet drink in a lovely natural setting

We were looking for somewhere to eat and happened to stumble upon this wonderful place. The dining area was quiet when we arrived so we were seated straight away. A great selection of food on the menu. I had the salmon and can honestly say I've not had better anywhere else. It was cooked so well and had a very tasty topping. The caper sauce that accompanied it was really delicious. My husband had the fish and chips, he said it was more like whale and chips as the fish was so big. The staff were helpful and polite. I would love to go back in summer as the outside looked beautiful and catered for children too.

If we hadn't been to Raby castle on bank holiday Monday we wouldn't have met the people who recommended this place us. We were met at the door by the owner and advised that the oven had broken so there would be a revised menu. The revised menu was fine so we decided to stay. The whole place is warm and welcoming, like the owner and staff. The decor very olde worlde with taste. Lovely bar area and beautiful restaurant. There are several tables outside where you can watch the ducks in the stream and where there are many activity toys for the children. The whole building just beautiful in a wonderful setting.

We went for Sunday dinner for a family get together. 3pm and still had all the meats plus a small choice of other meals. Lovely meat and vegetables. No problem for extra gravy and really nice Yorkshire puddings. Good choice of starters and desserts if you have room. We had a toddler with us so as is often the case mummy's dinner got cold whilst said toddler was settled. Happy to keep the meal warm and bring out once ready to eat. Beer quite pricey but a fantastic location with a water mill, stream come pond and ducks and chickens. Good play facilities too. Very relaxing.

I first came here about two years ago and had a lovely meal. This week I chose to take my family here for a special meal as I thought they would love it. The grounds and buildings are beautiful with doves, ducks and pretty chickens walking about and a lovely stream that flows by. As you walk into the building, the walls are steeped with historical information and pictures. The bar staff was so friendly and the open fire was very inviting. Unfortunately the ovens were broken but we were offered an alternative menu to chose from. We decided to eat elsewhere; what a shame for the business on a bank holiday. We enjoyed another drink sitting outdoors by the stream. I will return for a meal soon.

We'd known of this pub for quite a while but had not visited it for a long time. Had a lovely country pub meal. Nice and quite at a lunch time. Open fire blazing. Welcoming staff and relaxing nostalgic room. We had the baked Camenbert to share to start. It came with a good selection of bread for dipping and was very good. Main courses were Scampi (The special on that day), and Steak'n'Ale pie. Both very edible. Cleared plates all round. Definitely on our list now. Will be back soon.

Stayed for two nights for a mini honeymoon at the end of last month, bedroom part of the room was beautiful, but in the bathroom the toilet seat was hanging off and sink plug broken, a plastic cup that hadn't been changed in weeks if not months with a centipede type insect in it. For breakfast it was ok but the chefs swearing in the background was a tad off putting. Evening meal was alright bit average and not really worth the price in my opinion.

My friend and I went for lunch last Saturday. The Mill is in a lovely setting and inside is really nice, just what you would expect from a country pub but that's where the compliments end. The lady thats in charge is like a Sargent Major, her attitude is terrible. We were grunted at by her on arrival and shown to a table. The table was filthy so we had to ask for it to be cleaned. Given there were only a handful of people in the place the tables should have been spotless. We ordered soup to start which was cold and uncooked, the peas and the barley where still hard. We told the young waitress who was polite and apologised. The manageress then came and asked what was wrong, We told her and she said she had thought the peas were hard, why on earth would you still be serving it then!! We got no apology from her. The bread with the soup was the cheapest brown sliced bread and was stale. Both main courses were cold and my friends had a sauce on it which was congealed and looked old. I got the smallest portion of coleslaw and relish I've ever seen. When the bill came we had still been charged for the soup. I didn't say anything but we definitely wont be back. This place should be a gold mine but unless the manageress is changed and it gets someone friendly and pleasant with some customer service skills and the food improves it will never do anything. I'm not sure what she'd be good at but she needs to be kept away from customers,

Visited on Friday early evening to use our Itison voucher which was £20 for 2 x 3 course meals and a glass of wine each. Thai fish cakes and Pate to start, delicious, we both choose the home made steak and ale pie with chips which came piping hot and very nice indeed. Finished with sticky toffee pud and a cheese cake. I had wondered before we went if the portions would be smaller or the quality not so good as we had such a good deal with our voucher but the food was lovely and enough for us over the 3 courses. The lady who is in charge is very pleasant and give us a warm welcome and the 2 young members of staff were very nice and enthusiastic which is always nice to see.

A really lovely lunch today with my son, waitress with hair tied up greeted us and said we could choose where we sat....we opted for the table in bar next to a lovely warm open fire. Same pleasant waitress took our drinks order and handed us menus, also explained the specials boards to us. I went for the two course special of belly pork and black pud ( delicious!!) I then had the poached cod and asked if I could have chips instead of new pots (not a problem) and also really delicious. My son had eggs benedict then the bacon, brie and cranberry baguette which he also enjoyed. We both thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would have loved to have sat outside in the beautiful garden but a bit chilly today!. Your waitress was very pleasant and helpful and food very good and reasonably priced. 2 drinks each 2 starters 2 mains all for £38.60. I will defo be back, thank you all very much and well done xx

Well after the week before's trip to the Bradley Gardens we did not expect anything to top it for our Eatery of the Year 2016 but wow this must at least equal it. We all had the Lamb Dinners and boy where they something else the lam was tender and melt in the mouth whilst the veg was perfectly cooked. Again given it was Mid November the pub was very busy and suspect that as previous reviews this is even more so in the summer months. Another one that we'll be defo visiting agian.

One of the best places we have had visited in a long time. We were met by a very pleasant young lady called Paige and shown to a table in front of a roaring fire. Then Pauline came and introduced herself which was a nice touch. I had the pate and my husband had thai fishcakes both were presented very well the pate was really good and the fishcakes were nice but my husband thought they could have done with a little more seasoning but that was just his taste. The rest of the food could not be faulted I had steak and ale pie with peas and chips followed by cheesecake and my husband had belly pork with mash black pudding and an apple sauce followed by lemon meringue pie. It was excellent value for money as we had an Itison voucher which meant this was only £19 for both of us for the three courses. It was well worth the distance we travelled and we would happily go back and pay the full price
