Forget the poor remarks. We live locally and visit regularly. The staff are marvellous, the food consistently good. I owned a successful restaurant and food bar.......I know.....so forget the ridiculous comments, they were stretched through the imagination. My wife and I wouldn't go anywhere else.

It's raining. Everywhere is crowded. No luck getting into any of the many food outlets - and we had really tried! Found this little cafe with empty tables. We 4 adults and 2 children sat ourselves down and looked at the menu. We were told that they were no longer serving food. At 13.28 and the menu clearly stated food available till 14.30. The 2 children were really hungry so they agreed to do them some toast. Another party were served with sandwiches and a fruit plate even though they arrived after us. What kind of business is this? They turned at least 8 people away while we were there. This makes no sense. How will businesses recover if they allow such shoddy practices? As for customer service......forget it!

So after being turned down by at least 12 eateries in Dartmouth today, we finally found this tiny cafe open With empty seats in. It closed at 2 (posters on the window) and we entered at 13:28 and were told instantly that they aren’t serving food anymore - only cake and cream teas available. Fair enough, we were so hungry and wet through we were just grateful to be allowed inside somewhere without booking. Another family came in they were allowed to order food (sandwiches etc) but at this stage we were eating our cake. Then we spotted at 20 to, an elderly lady tried to come in and she asked if they had any tables, the waitress pointed to the “we close at 2” sign without speaking a word or looking at her. How disgusting is that? I begrudged giving them our money but it was too late at this point. I even watched the man inside the kitchen run across the way with a sandwich on a plate for someone? After we’d been told no. I wouldn’t recommend anybody to visit here, they don’t deserve your money. Please don’t bother replying, I won’t read it.

We spent a week in Dartmouth and ended up here every morning for our mid morning cup of tea! - The young man who served us was so pleasant and a credit to the cafe. You can’t come to Devon without having a cream tea. So many places to choose but this place looked like they would appreciate our business. Genuine staff with owner? concerned we had ordered too many scones. He needn’t have bothered. Although large, they were moorish and moist and with the help of some butter, clotted cream and strawberry jam, more given when requested, they slid down accompanied by a large pot of tea. Possibly a little expensive but they’ve had a limited tourist season, and to be fair in hindsight we should have taken the implied suggestion when ordering to have shared the double scones and pot of tea

We stumbled on the cafe in the market, Dartmouth. They have Cream Tea signs everywhere, you would think that this would be a good place to sit outside and enjoy one. Not the case, the cook, who must be the owner was the most miserable person I had ever come across and the scones were stalle, whatever you do don’t have a Cream Tea here

We were recommended this cafe by a builder standing by another cafe which had a sign clearly saying children not welcome. The owners of the old market cafe made my son so welcome, even making him special sandwiches on his request. The food was nice and light, such a change from the usual greasy offerings we have seen this week. The quiche was filling and tasty and the giant sausage roll nice as well. Came in for the first time in several years. Early evening, end of week. We were too early for our booking at a restaurant nor far down and across the road. Friendly in the Barrel House, bit hectic but benign jostling and a good mix of ages, types etc. Fair selection of booze at average current prices. Got a place to sit with a few out and inwards towards the idiosyncratic but interesting crowd. If we hadn’t to leave for a meal and then a music gig down at St Mary’s we’d have easily stayed in the Barrel House all evening.

Like something from Dante's Vision of Hell. With TV screens. A pub for all-day-drinkers (alcoholics), the long term unemployed (unemployable) and thick teenagers. Grossly unappealing groups of the lumpen proletariat usually gathered outside coughing their lungs out with roll-ups. Can't Wetherspoons make a bid for it?
