We had a wonderful dinner on Saturday eve by the fire, after getting the sea tractor across to this unique little gem of a pub. Warm and friendly atmosphere and you can feel the history of the pub. Great food and great service.

Not a fan of charging £2 extra for a plastic cup to drink outside even though you can get it back on return of the cup. Waited 20min to be served in a long que so not going through that for £2. Not a Fan

This place is very cosy and has an ideal view. However, I had a bad experience. I ordered a pint of cider, I took a sip and felt it didn't taste right at all. My partner took the cider to the bar and asked for it to be checked and possibly changed. The staff member quite 'confidently' asserted that the cider was absolutely fine and fresh, so I thought it must just be me. I drank the pint, and happened to see/ hear someone else also take their drink to the bar for questioning. We left, and as we were walking back across the beach, my stomach began to hurt. This became progressively worse over the next couple of hours, until the point that I projectile vomited aggressively throughout the evening. In conclusion- trust your instincts, if your pint tastes off, persist to ask for it to be changed or refunded.

I thought I'd chance this place despite the very mixed reviews. The pub is great, very old and traditional and very small but great "feel". However I ordered a pint of beer (Otter Amber) and it was served very very cloudy. I've drunk ale for 30 years and its extremely rare to have a cloudy beer that's meant to be cloudy. I said the beer is off and showed the barmaid the glass. She looked puzzled and said unconvincingly she thought that's how it was, but she didn't seem really sure, she was trying to compare it to lager. Her 2 colleagues also seemed not sure of what to say or do, but they all tried to maintain that ale is a cloudy drink. I was told "it is always like that". I sipped it, it tasted okish. I wasn't offered another drink. As I sat there drinking it I was damn sure the beer was not meant to be like that but persisted to drink it. Then other customers went up complaining the beer was offer, even given their beers back and walking out. At no point did they come over to apologise or offer to swap it. Staff in a pub should absolutely know how to look after and serve ale. So the beer is really crap, don't come here for a pint of ale. I then ordered the lager which was drinkable but in all seriousness I wouldn't rush back. Staff need training, cellarman needs to learn to look after beer.

We recently had a very bespoke and unusual wedding with a small wedding party . During the day of our wedding we visited The Pilchard Inn on Burgh Island for lunch . This had taken a little bit of organising over the months, but was well worth it ! Myself and my husband, already loved Burgh Island and The Pilchard and now so do our friends and family . We had such well presented and tasty food, baguettes and pasties . We do have to say a special thank you to the two ladies running the Pilchard that day, they were extremely busy but still were there for us. They also saved the day ( literally) when we had a little problem with leaving the Island via the sea tractor . These two ladies went above and beyond to help us and we will always be thankful to you . Can not recommend enough and made a special day … magical

Went as a family holiday, on our first visit the kids meal, fish, chips and peas I thought was reasonable at £7 then went back for the Tom Crocker Day and the food was a joke. The kids meal was still £7 however you only got half a hotdog, the chips had been market out with a market own on the menu and you had to pay an extra £3.50 if you wanted them. I have attached a picture of the half a hotdog priced at £7 and I will be taking this further.

They are missing the mark here. Things could be so much better. The food is overpriced and not value for money at all. £20.50 for 2 medium sized baguettes that took nearly 40 minutes to come. The chicken pesto baguette was nice but the egg mayo was awful. Couldn't taste the egg at all and the consistency was very runny. Everything is served in plastic. You'd expect better service ware for the prices you pay! My partner said the toilets were filthy. A lot of people around us were very unhappy. Feel sorry for the 2 ladies that paid £30 for 2 glasses of wine! (Again served in plastic!)

Was so looking forward to visiting this pub but was sadly disappointed. Poor service by uninterested staff; the depth of dirt on the floors, windows, chairs was amazing to see - clearly not been cleaned for a long time. But the toilets were beyond belief - loo paper on the floor, dirty seats and pans, no soap and filthy sinks - worse still the stench coming from the men’s loo was nauseating. So disrespectful to customers and the history of the building and those who have lived and work there over the centuries!!

Absolute rip off and poor service. We went in Summer holidays and they had a BBQ on which looked great. Whilst queuing for a kids meal they crossed out that it came with chips so I had to pay £7 for a hotdog and £4.50 for chips (so the most expensive kids meal I’ve come across). The photo is the pathetic hotdog when it was served and no we hadn’t eaten half!!! Spoke to manager and said it was a shambles they charged £7 for that and he just said that prices were set by head office and wasn’t really interested.

A fabulous Sunday evening on a warm summers day . Staff and service was very helpful as we arrived early ,was shown to a lovely window seat. Food was excellent and found prices the much the same as other seaside restaurants.. Reading some other reviews it is difficult to understand how a pub dating back to 13th century can cater for the many visitors that visit expecting quick food on demand . When inside it can only sit about 20/25 at the most. Thanks for a lovely evening.

The Pilchard Inn is a lovely place for drinks and food. Walks on the island are very pleasant but the only down side to our day was the timing of the sea tractor. We were able to walk over and looked forward to the ride back at a very reasonable £2 pp. However, the driver insisted on his every 1 hour return slot to carry 25 to 30 passengers. It then appeared that hotel guests and staff got priority. There was a long queue which resulted in an hour and a half wait for island and pub visitors. Surely in mid August it would have made sense to put extra runs on. Thankfully it was a cloudy day otherwise it would have been dark by the time we got back. We have been visitors to Bigbury since the mid 80's and never had this long a wait. Recommend visitors take tractor there and walk back. Richard Harbon

Great little pub on Burgh Island in Bigbury-on-sea. It’s like a step back in time. The features of old ship decor makes it really inviting. The food is top notch. The service is next to none, most of the staff are uni students on summer work and are well suited for the job as they have a lot of attention to detail, even down to the serving of the drinks. Charlie made our drinks down to a T. Proper young ladies man! However, having to pay £2 for each glass on top of the drink was a pain. Then having to queue up afterwards to get your £2 refunded was a pain and almost not worth waiting as the bar is small and it’s a long wait. The drinks were high value too. The men’s toilets stank of urine and obviously not cleaned regularly as was wet and mouldy on the floor. It reminded me of a run down pub with no care. No soap to wash your hands and no mirrors. When you consider the hotel is a 5 star location and very expensive to stay at, it would not take much to make an impression to locals and holiday makers.

This pub is a gem. It's as adorable as any picture you'll see, so I'll not gush too much about it's 13th century charm, it's island location, sea wall tables and views of the rocky Devon coast. Wow, .. oh the tractor "trundle" is as cute as it looks too. Food was quick and fresh, the fish and chips was 100% top class, stunning chunky fresh chips and juicy fish. All so reasonably priced, very ! One expensive item only, the crab sandwich. I asked the staff it's constitution, so as to gauge the cost / white crab ratio. I was offered a sample pot to eat and decide. I was not disappointed, a decodent sublime fresh crab sandwich. It's small, and busy , so be patient and enjoy the views, I'd recommend to everyone

The food I had today was much better than it used to be. £8.50 for a small haddock with some triple cooked chips is actually not too bad. The issue is the lacklustre service and the fact that it’s £6.50 for a pint of Guinness served in a plastic cup which you have to pay a £2 deposit for, which you then have to queue up again for to get back. They need to get over the deposit scheme; it just makes getting a pint at a pub in a lovely setting feel like an absolute chore. Pints should also be served in the proper glass. Been going here for years and there’s always something disappointing about the visit. Glad the food is showing signs of improvement, but you can tell the staff get tired of having to tell everyone who wants a drink they need to pay a deposit for a cup. Just get rid of it!

Ok thats fine except when I got back to the bar, there was an 8 person queue with 1 person serving, making coffee, food orders, beer and drinks and I hS to be said, very slowly. While I waited for my £4 refund 4 people left saying "waste of time" A poor lady at the front of the queue waited for her 3 coffees only to be told "Cash Only" when she tried to pay. The people in the queue allowed me to move to the front but the staff couldn't give me my £4 refund, guess why, the till had no money in it because they don't take cash. The pub is great the staff are friendly and I learned a lot and the wooden statue in the corner date's back to the 14th century. There is also an amusing original paper sign of the rules of the lodge one of which is, no more than 3 in one bed.

Well talk about a rip off, two different prices for the same round of drinks, £2 charge on a plastic glass and rotten outside tables, such a shame.

The lady running the bar I belive she is the manager has a really bad attitude problem that's puts a really bad atmosphere on the place like oh great my drinks empty got to go speak this dragon women again that looks like she's been stung by a 100 bees get rid of her your business will thrive she makes me not want to come back and I ordered 4 rounds of drinks and 2 out of the 4 times I ordered she charged me for the same plastic cups when i had already paid the deposit on them and brung them back to be resued again and she charged me again for the cups which are £2 each even though I have already paid the deposit on them it seems like it's a regular occurrence and are scamming people out of money. Also to add to this cup deposit scheme something needs to be changed as when we are finished using them and don't want to order any more drinks and get a refund of the plastic cups you have to re queue and when it's busy it's a long que and most people give up on returning the cups as the wait to get your money back for them is like 20 to 30 minutes just to get a refund on the cups there needs to be a way to speed this up as at the moment it is a con. Change the management improve the place other then that great location and every beach needs a pub 👍👌

Need to sort their system out. Deposit of £2 on plastic glasses which is fair enough but to wait in line with new customers in order to get your deposit back (15 mins) is ridiculous. Also pricing is random, £25 for a round of 3 drinks one day, £19.75 two days later for exactly the same, prices here include the deposit of £6. No other choice though for a drink after walking the glorious island.

The place is a historical landmark yet its run like a disorganised kiosk. Service is slow and unwelcoming, gloomy Morrissey waling in the background and then you have to queue back up to get your deposit back on the glasses you used. Dont bother and treat yourself in the beach cafe on mainland

Excellent pub on a remote island. Dan was excellent and made our 2 visits memorable. The Burgh island gin is a nice treat!

I normally visit Bigbury once a year, spend a day or two on the beach, it's a lovely part of the world really. I've never stayed at the hotel but did have the good fortune to eat there. Our visit usually involves a visit to the Pilchard Inn. I noticed this year how unloved the area around the Inn is, cigarette stubs, worn out ground, dirty windows. It seems to me the island is happy to take my card payment but not so happy to invest in a little expenditure on the cheap seats I'm sure the same situation does not exist the other side if those grand gates! So come on Burgh Island Hotel lavish some £ on the Pilchard. Another note can we pay cash please, card payments benefit the card system each £ worth...well less than a £ after the fee is skimmed off. Take my cash, it will save you money! Thank you!

Didn’t actually get to experience it. Emailed to book, told to call. Called to book, couldn’t speak to someone and so told to email. Emailed to book, didn’t get a reply. Total waste of time.

No food on Saturday. Apparently food is only every other day, how crazy is that so on a busy Saturday we couldn’t get anything and the service for drinks was very slow as well. Not impressed so we wont be going back.

What a wonderful 80th birthday celebration we had at The Pilchard. The sea tractor made for a memorable start. Drivers and staff were wonderful at every point - so kind and friendly, but not obtrusive. The table dressing, and dinning space were beautiful. The short...

Haven't visited for a few years. This time there wasn't a friendly atmosphere at all; that's an understatement. Young staff were not in a rush at all but were friendly enough (not overly.) Service was slow; the manager looked unapproachable (I presume she was the manager), she was cleaning tables around us, slamming chairs (loudly), making comments about cleaning/sweeping up, customers were literally watching her in shock. We left straight after, after our two expensive rounds of drinks.

This is far and away the best place to enjoy live music in Totnes. Comfortable, great community spirit and affordable drinks served by friendly staff.

Like something from Dante's Vision of Hell. With TV screens. A pub for all-day-drinkers (alcoholics), the long term unemployed (unemployable) and thick teenagers. Grossly unappealing groups of the lumpen proletariat usually gathered outside coughing their lungs out with roll-ups. Can't Wetherspoons make a bid for it?

Out on a bike ride and came across this absolute gem. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff and welcoming customers. Very helpful with ferry advice too. Decent range of drinks and although we didn't eat there the food looked and smelt great. We ll be back to eat soon.
