The Old Inn in Argyll & Bute

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!! We stumbled on this place by accident when trying to find a good view of Stalker Castle. We decided to pop in this little pub for a pint but little did we know how special this place is. We arrived a bit before dinner service was starting so we chatted with the host and she gave us the run down of the place - it's history, the food, etc. Luckily we were able to get a table and WOW the food was delicious. I had the stake and fries and my wife had the home made tagliatelle pasta with beef - both of which were great. We followed that with sticky toffee pudding and it was the best we had over our two week trip. It is one of those experiences we will remember for a very long time.

While staying at a nearby campsite to recharge our motorhome, I found myself seriously craving meat. My wife did a quick Google search and came across The Old Inn in Appin. What a discovery! This place knows how to make a steak like no other – truly unbelievable! We both ordered the 26oz T-bone steaks with chips, sauce, and a bottle of wine, and everything was sheer perfection. The steaks were cooked exactly to our liking, tender, juicy, and bursting with flavour. The chips were golden and crispy, the sauces were rich and indulgent, and the wine paired beautifully with the meal. The ambience of The Old Inn was charming, with lovely fairy lights strung everywhere that added a warm, inviting glow to the rustic setting. Yes, the seating was a bit hard, but honestly, who cares when you’re served food and service as incredible as this? It only added to the character of the place. Now, we don’t typically order steaks from anywhere, because my wife was the queen of cooking them at home – always perfect and absolutely stunning. I’d usually find it a waste to order steak out, but not with this place! The Old Inn truly raised the bar, delivering steaks so incredible that even my wife was thoroughly impressed. My wife, who didn’t have much appetite at the time due to her cancer, managed to finish every bite because it was just that delicious. That’s saying something! Yes, we both ended up with the inevitable meat sweats, but it was absolutely worth it. The meal was indulgent in the best way possible. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made the whole evening even better. For the quality of food and the excellent service, the prices are more than fair. This was a meal to remember – one of the best steak dinners we’ve ever had – and we would recommend The Old Inn to anyone passing through Appin. Don’t miss this place if you’re a steak lover! Thank you everyone for making that evening such an enjoyable one and for giving my wife and I a fantastic date night with gorgeous food, because, heart-crushingly, she lost her battle with cancer only a month later.

A top drawer experience this past weekend. We made a booking on the recommendation of our accommodation host in Oban... and wow what a find. A must stop if in the area. The view across the bay alone is mesmerizing. Had a fantastic dinner in the 16th century Inn / Pub. very friendly and personable staff and lovely cosy environment. Thanks guys.

We really didn't know what to make of it when we booked. Was very pleasantly surprised. Great food (steak, chips, sticky toffee pudding). Quiet and romantic (at least to our tastes). Perfect queue of music (used Shazam to id like 20 times!). Highly recommend!

A definite must for anybody visiting! Arrived prior to the restaurant being open on the off chance of getting a table and have never been made more welcome by the landlord who managed to fit us in. The Inn feels as though it is steeped in history and we could quite happily have stayed all evening. Food wise, one of the best steaks I have ever had - so glad we called in. Once again, thank you to the fantastic landlord!

My partner and I absolutely loved our experience at the Old Inn. The food was another level (particular shout out to the peppercorn sauce and the sticky toffee pudding which were elite), the ambience was fantastic, and the service was friendly and brilliant. Would highly recommend this place for anyone visiting this area - just make sure you book in advance as they can get fully booked. Can't wait to come back 🙏

Great ambience, a nice, quaint restaurant. The two waiters are very friendly and helpful and the food is very tasty. You have a great view of a small ruin in the water. Reservation is recommended, during the week in October the two of us almost couldn't get a table :)

Absolutely fantastic, best food we had in Scotland! We went last week and it had great atmosphere, made all the better by wandering around in the dark to find the entrance at the back! Music was great, staff were excellent and the fillet steak was perfect! Highly recommend

From the moment we walked into the Old Inn it put a smile on our faces - a really chilled vibe, great traditional Scottish music in the background, friendly and relaxing. Absolutely loved the place. Great service and the fillet steak was literally the best steak I’ve ever tasted, so soft and tender, I didn’t know steak could taste so good. The best start to our holiday!

Food and service was excellent.

This place is so good, we came twice over two weeks, I had mussels, then a sirloin both times because it was the best I’ve had, then had sticky toffee pudding, then the cheesecake. Both times washed down with a Caledonian Best. Service was great, really laid back, genuinely friendly staff and the atmosphere is so calm, but full of life with a good mix of folk music, while next to a lovely fire. Will be back!

Beautiful cooked steak, attentive friendly staff. The only negatives was it was too dark and the music was so loud you couldn’t have a conversation.

One of the best places in the Highlands! An incredible steak, some of the best sauce I've ever had, and a top-notch atmosphere. Walking through the old wood door into this cozy, ambient space was something I won't soon forget. Great selection of ciders and beer as well. As well, offers a great view of Castle Stalker, especially at sunset!

One of the beast Steaks I’ve ever had. And my dad was a butcher so I’ve had some fine steaks over the years. Service was great and I loved the decor and atmosphere in the pub. Planning a cycle tour in September and making sure I’ll be here at some point

Never judge a book by its cover . When you first drive up to it you could easily be put off by its exterior. But this is a real gem great food , beer and hospitality down as one of my favourite pubs

Book in advance because it is very popular and for good reason. We came as a treat after we were recommended this by family so we went all out and had 3 courses. Both starters were brilliant. The beef Croquettes were delicious. The Steak they serve here is easily the best cook steak I have had and the sauce is amazing! Deserts are well portions and sweet and a really nice finish to the evening. The restaurant itself is so quirky and old hence the name. Staff were very friendly as well.

I have booked a party of 10 for this evening and I’ve had a lot of back and forth with changes and they have been super accommodating. Replied straight away and always had the best customer service. I go regular and wouldn’t have a steak anywhere else now. You will not be disappointed and the staff and lovely and always happy to help. Book in advance so you are not disappointed as it’s a popular place.

Ist time that I'd been to The Old Inn at Appin. It won't be my last, the staff there are very pleasant and welcoming, the atmosphere is very good and the food was amazing. Certainly one of the finest steaks I've ever eaten. Clean plates all round. I would highly recommend anybody going here for a meal. Thank you to all the staff on duty.

Had the best filet steak. Absolutely huge and perfectly cooked. Simply served with a small salad, a huge pile of chips and a bowl of pepper sauce on the side. Very tasty! Sadly left no room for dessert. The fact it's dog friendly was an added bonus. Will definitely be back next time I'm in the area.

One of my favorite dining experiences I’ve ever had. This is an extremely charming place with friendly folks and simple, absolutely delicious food. They primarily serve steaks on a cutting board, Viking style. I’m an American and I have pretty high standards for a steak. These guys are the real deal. No question about it. And the setting is absolutely superior to any steakhouse in the USA. Worth a trip just for this place.

I really liked the atmosphere here. Low lighting and old pub vibes made it a very enjoyable experience. The food was good. The sirloin steak was tender and the peppercorn sauce and chips were nice. Generous portion. Food took a little while (about 45 min).

In Italy, at first glance, we would label it as a tavern, but here where it is located it is perfect. Movie atmosphere, exquisite food (the meat is spectacular) and vast selection of whiskies. Highly recommended

An inconspicuous, rustic and small restaurant. You feel like you've been transported back in time and can really immerse yourself in the beautiful music. The food was reasonably priced! The pepper sauce was probably the best I've ever tasted! We will come again!!!

312g of absolutely delicious meat lit by candlelight in the middle of an old barn to the sound of Scottish music. Friendly service. The place is small, better to book in advance. Hearty dish, I was no longer hungry to have pudding which I really wanted given the other comments

The "Old Inn" has a charming charm with Scottish background music! We spontaneously stopped at the "Old Inn" for a break and a look at Castle Stalker - we also got some wonderful recommendations from our waitress (who is originally from Glasgow) about whiskey and our further journey. One of the best eateries in Scotland. We had a fantastic evening, Delicious well cooked and presented Steaks, A really good bottle of Rioja and Sticky Toffee pudding that was perfect. The staff were friendly and welcoming the wood burner was lit and a the whole place was warm and inviting. We will definitely be back. Gorgeous little pub with views across the bay to the castle. Candlelit tables and friendly service from the bar staff will make you want to stay all night.

This place is worth it just for the environment and the atmosphere you breathe: it seems like you are inside a real medieval inn, with unplastered stone walls and a wooden roof, a few paintings on the walls and soft light, wooden tables and benches. raw legbo, ox head hanging above the counter.

A wee diamond of a place with great food, beer and whisky and some gin and rum. Cosy atmosphere with cool traditional Scots playlists. Big choice of steaks, some fish and veggie options. She had the falafel and hummus burger and I had the Hake. Superb quality. Delicious. Dessert was a cheesecake. 2 x Guinness 1 x IPA and 1 x single malt £59. Great value and

I loved every single bit of this place. From the atmosphere (which is incredible and takes you back to the 1600s) all the way to the food, which is by far the best steak we had in the Highlands. Not to count the beer and the whiskies. Not cheap, but totally worthwhile. Strongly recommend!

Just incredible! An old Jacobite tavern lit by candlelight. A superb welcome, very welcoming and who takes care of you throughout the meal. The meats served are excellent and the pudding for dessert is divine. Honestly, I highly recommend stopping for dinner here. Reservation required. We did this via Facebook without problem. A must in the region.

Can't recommend this place enough! Superb Ribeye steak, cooked to perfection. For dessert, I had IMHO The best Sticky Toffee Pudding I think I've ever eaten! The waitress who served us was very friendly and talkative, which combined with the great view of the castle and atmosphere inside the Inn it all added up to a great experience which I'll be hoping to do again shortly before returning home.

I was recommended by a friend of mine to go to this place as a good one for steaks But turned down and was very disappointed for not being able to get a table I work in hospitality industry myself and I hate to turn customers away buy not giving a table Was told the place was fully booked but there where a lot of tables empty Shame as they didn't want my business Shame for the owners that employ staff that don't care Obviously isn't their place It hurts but true I wouldn't go back Shame Shame

The old Inn is unbelievable, the atmosphere the staff are amazing. The food is on another level steak cooked to absolute perfection, the mussels again were delicious. I can’t fault this place at all I’m sorry I’m away home in the morning or I’d go back to try another dish!

Wish I had taken pictures to the food, but we were too hungry and everything was delicious! It's a great place, the highlight of our day trip to Lismore. Would visit again for sure. Advance booking is recommended.

Absolutely amazing! Stopped here on a whim while facing a 2hr detour while hungry and couldn't have been more impressed. Easily the best steak I've ever had, cooked perfectly, and with a delicious peppercorn sauce. Staff were very friendly and accommodating and there's even a great view right outside so all in all, pretty faultless!

A real experience from start to finish. The atmosphere and decor is amazing. Great background (scottish) music, not all traditional but welcome. The food was exceptional, although if you don't want meat I would look elsewhere. My steak was impeccable, cooked to perfection. Be warned - big portions. My wife had hake which he thoroughly enjoyed. We have been trying to get in for the past 6 years and the wait was worth it.

We visited twice during our short break to the highlands. We all had filet steak and it was the best steak I’ve ever tasted! The staff are welcoming and work very hard. You need to book as we saw a few walk ins turned away. Just superb!

since the gathering in glencoe sadly but very obviously has gone down the drain i've been lucky enough to find this gem. thanks for that, at least they're good at making people look for alternatives! the old inn is a rock solid recommendation. be sure to book in advance. my recommendation, sirloin with the absolutely superbe pepper sauce. with a stout of course. although one is none...have at it, Sláinte! consistent quality from the kitchen. love it!

This place is magical. I was not expecting the ambiance to be so spectacular…my jaw dropped a little when I walked in. The service and food was even better than the ambiance. Highly recommended!

This was an amazing find as we were exploring Scotland. Overlooking one of the most amazing views. They’ve got the atmosphere spot on with cosy interior and wholesome music. The food was delicious too. The most impressive thing was the service! Super lovely, incredibly efficient but managed to be attentive throughout the busy evening. I’d recommend this to anyone in the area

It feels like you're stepping into a film: the atmosphere is incredible with Scottish music, the decor is brilliant, the food is delicious and the waiters are adorable. Around £20 per dish. I hope I can go back one day!

Not sure whether I want to recommend this little black book eatery as we fear it could get too busy and we won't get a place! It is quirky, you might have to reach them through social media, yes, you will need to pre-order (possibly only if you are a large group). But it is worth it. It's not a huge menu, majoring in steak, but what steak! The wine to pair? we suggest their suggestion. The hidden gem is turning around from the entrance path and taking in the view. I will leave that for you to discover.

An unassuming approach to this place gets you thinking then there is Castle Stalker presenting itself with all its grandeur. Once inside you are greeted with a medieval banqueting type hall which has been there since the 1600’s originally a stable to the inn. A decent menu and good portions along very friendly staff makes it a night to remember. Highly recommended and a night to remember 5 stars.

We all had steaks. There’s of us had the fillets while the other sirloin. Ea h one was cooked to perfection. We lived the atmosphere and the staff was top notch!
