What a great find in Chester. Walked along the canal to this pub. It was hopping asked if we could join a table with a two couples. Ordered drinks at the bar and stuck up a conversation with the people. A good craic as they say. The food was good and plentiful. Vegetarian mushroom pie and fish and chips. Both delicious.

Use to love this place and reccomend it to everyone up until today! I went there around 7pm with my friend and my sleeping 14month old in the pram to have a non-alcoholic drink outside in the sun to have a long catch up since having a baby but was told children are not allowed. Never have I felt so disgusted to hear this so we went to Hickory's instead who were extremely accommodating to my friend, Myself & Baby who was fast asleep, thank you to Hickory's! Won't be reccomending this judgy place again who are not young human friendly!

This is a great venue with an excellent selection of real ales and good value. However, the service is significantly let down by several bar staff who consistently avoid eye contact and prioritize serving known customers, which happens on almost every visit. While some staff are fair and efficient, a noticeable number show clear favoritism and possess negative attitudes, even displaying a sense of superiority.

I love Harkers, have been going for years and it has always been my go-to when in Chester - its child-free and dog-friendly policy is great. However, the last couple of visits have been a disappointment for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the quality and price of the food recently has been a concern. I dont mind paying more when the food is great, but the standard has really slipped recently. Portions are smaller, and the quality doesnt seem to be as good as in the past. What youre now paying is restaurant prices for a pub meal and not a fantastic pub meal at that... Its a real shame. My second concern is that they really need to sort out the loos. On a recent visit we were sat at the table nearest the loos as one of our party had mobility issues. However, every time someone went in or out the smell has overwhelming. I understand that the loos have no windows, so its always going to be a challenge, but this was pretty awful (and it was January).... Our last trip to Chester it was suggested we go to Harkers as usual but we decided to go to a restaurant instead. Enough said. Come on Harkers, sort it out...

The Old Harker's Inn on Russell street is an excellent upmarket pub and restaurant we visited on our two day trip to Chester. Its an excellent pub and restaurant thats housed in a former Victorian canalside warehouse on it's ground floor. The interior is superb with wooden flooring and many interesting fixtures and features and superb wooden furniture and when we visited here it was very busy. Its our first trip to here in about three year's and it's just as good as it's ever been. We visited many pub/bars and restaurants on our trip to Chester and this brilliant pub and restaurant was up there with all of the other superb place's we visited. On our visit we had a few glasses of beers from a really good brewery called Phoenix brewery that were perfectly served and were well priced considering the pub we were in and where this pub is located. The Old Harker's Inn is a fantastic pub and restaurant thats well worth a visit for a real ale or a tasty meal.(This is my 2nd review of the Old Harkers Inn). Opening Hours. Monday-Saturday-10.30-23.00. Sunday-10.30-22.30.

Always nice to come across a place that oozes history and is clearly a popular watering hole & eatery for many generations. A short walk along the canal from our hotel one weekday early evening, it looked inviting and was quite full, although spacious enough for noise levels to be perfectly acceptable. Very pleasant staff found us a table although we hadn't booked, followed by some very nice beer from a local brewery. Food was top notch, perfectly cooked, hot and pleasantly presented. A shared dessert completed a very nice meal. The history of the place as a former shoe factory is very nicely depicted, and an excellent guide explains how the Arms came into being despite some technical difficulties with the former structure! Not cheap, but very good value in my opinion for fare & ambience.Fascinating, and definitely one to revisit on a future stay. Plaudits to the owners & staff for creating this fine pub, highly recommended.

Rump steak with peppercorn sauce: Steak was beautifully cooked (medium), sauce was nice enough but no no visible peppercorns, crushed or whole. Tasted nice though. Sticky toffee pudding: Disappointing. The pudding itself was cold and dense, rather like a cake that was a few days too old, the sauce & ice cream were minimal...

We were advised to book even for a Monday evening and could see why, as when we arrived at 7pm it was already full of drinkers and diners. The bar staff and restaurant staff were all very friendly and welcoming. The food was that good, that we decided to book for the Tuesday evening as well and just like Monday it was full again. The Old Harker Arms in Chester is a charming, canal-side pub located just a 5-minute walk from Chester railway station and around a 15-minute stroll from the historic Chester Cross. Known for its classic British menu, I tried the Beer-Battered Fish and Chips and opted for garden peas instead of mushy peas, which was a nice touch. The fish was coated in a crispy, golden beer batter, and the chips were thick and perfectly cooked, balancing a crunchy exterior with a fluffy inside. The pub also boasts an impressive selection of craft ales, which makes it easy to find a great pairing for your meal. The combination of traditional fare, great beers, and a convenient location makes The Old Harker Arms an excellent choice for anyone visiting Chester.

Food was lovely staff was rude we had 7 drinks all was flat so i pick up the tray and walked up and seen the manager who then told me to take them to the bar instead of taking them off me she was very abrupt the bar man said he would make fresh these where also flat when he brought them over to us we said they was still flat we was told there is nothing wrong with them and then said if u got a problem im getting my manger who came over with an attitude problem and offered us a refund on the drinks all in all the staff are not friendly at all and hygiene needs to be desperately looked at as staff was taking out food with hair not tied back and picking up glasses from the rim instead of using a tray then on there phones then proceeding to carry food out also there was one guy wearing blue gloves on top of white heat protective cloves who was clearly a food handler in the kitchen handing out knives and forks thats a big no no in my opinion
