The Old Captains House in Copeland

Whilst this pub doesn't stand out from the outside, it's food and service certainly does. There is plenty of choice on the menu and the food as absolutely delicious. The staff were absolutely delightful and were brilliant with out children (aged 11 & 15). Would absolutely recommend.

Nothing more to say other than was a very lovely meal, ordered off the seasonal specials menu and was beautiful. The staff are very attentive and welcoming. 100% recommend. What a gem

Went to Captain's House for a meal with family. Meal was excellent. My grandson has a peanut allergy. The staff were so attentive and compassionate to him , was a credit to all the staff. Once again thanks. Chris Gill and family .

5 of us thought we would book a table for a meal.3 of us ordered half Cumberland sausage half gammon. The gammon was more like a bacon chop. Nothing but fat and what meat was edible was so,so salty. Rubbish.I did complain but it fell on dear ears. It isn't the first time we've complained at this venue, we had Sunday lunch previously and complained about the veg being cold. Other people complained on the same day. We have given this place a chance, but no more. Will definitely not be back. It is not cheap either infact very expensive for the lack of quality food.......

Popped in for a couple of ciders and food as doing the Coast to Coast ! The lady behind the bar was lovely and friendly ! Made me very welcome ! I ordered chicken fajitas ! They were amazing and they came with a huge bowl of chips which were also lovely ! I couldn’t finish it all as I have a small appetite so they parcelled it up for me to take away and then they ordered me a taxi ! Thank you - brilliant hospitality 😁

Brilliant. Sunday lunch was delicious, piping hot, plenty of food and then some. Not the most salubrious of settings but don’t be put off. The food more than makes up for the decor. As the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover. Definitely going to return.

Potted prawns in a garlicky butter with crusty bread delicious. Steak cooked to perfection with all the trimmings and homemade cooked chips Stilton sauce

We really enjoyed our stay here. Des, the owner is in the process of doing the place up so, although the rooms are basic, they are clean and comfortable and the service Des provides is second to none. We had excellent fish and chips on arrival and a great breakfast the following morning. Des has a heart of gold and couldn't do enough for us.

In the process of being done up so nothing special but We had a good meal, clean room and hearty breakfast the next morning. Des, the landlord, could not have been more helpful. Very good position for the start of the coast to coast and Des offered to take us to St Bees

Excellent meals, real ale, friendly bar staff, great craic, traditional pub plus regular entertainment.

Love Sunday lunch here. Choice of meats, always served very hot. Staff all very pleasant and helpful. Under going renovation at the moment, but this doesn't detract from the quality of the food or the service. You need to book in advance to be sure of a table. Highly recommend.

First time visit for lunch, very good portion size, value for money, taste and choice of food. Had the beef Sunday lunch and asked for some pork crackling on the side, no quibbles and service was very good. You won't be disappointed with the food, service or value for money. I will be back again soon.

Steak night on saturdays but you need to look at the board outside to see when it is, excellent value. You get entertainment on a regular basis which are good. The sunday carvery you dont need to go anywhere else, you need to book as they have their own regulars.

Después de leer las críticas que decidimos dar el Old Captains House, una prueba durante las vacaciones cerca. Llamamos a reservar una mesa y estaba muy concurrido, así que me alegro que hicimos! Los cuatro de nosotros tuvimos un asado, tratando los 3 carnes de oferta (ternera, cerdo, pavo) y los 3 eran deliciosos.Los propietarios y todo el personal era muy acogedor y estupendo acceso en silla de ruedas por un antiguo pub!Nos dieron la habitación para un lugar de flan y estos eran geniales también- sin duda volveré si nos encontramos en la zona de vacaciones de nuevo!

Booked a table for sunday lunch after hearing good reports and we were not disappointed. Service was very good and the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. I will certainly be back very soon

Bursting at the seams with a proper slap up Sunday Lunch. Tender and succulent pork and beef and tons of veg. Very friendly staff and a lovely Ennerdale Ale.

Estábamos buscando el almuerzo de domingo y tenía una recomendación de un local. El exterior nos dejó dudas pero una vez dentro nos lo excelente, el servicio es amable y la comida fantástica. Las mujeres metieron en un almuerzo ya totalmente reservada y había una opción de tres diferentes asados. La próxima vez que estemos en la zona sin duda reserva para asegurarse de que consigue un lugar!

Absolutely beautiful will definitely be going back, friendly service and very welcoming. Sunday dinner is to die for.

A great welcome awaits at this establishment from the genial owner and the terrific hard working staff, decent selection of draught and bottled beers, with wines to suit every pallet at reasonable prices.The menu has something for everyone, with Specials on offer as well.I had the deep fried mushrooms starter which came with a terrific dipping mayonnaise, the Ladies in our party both had the Chicken Satay starter which they raved about.From the Specials two us had the 10oz Sirloin Steak with Rarebit which I wasn't quite sure how it would turn out, I had ordered mine "well done" and it was served perfectly as I had requested complete with hand cut chips, first class.One of the Ladies also had the Sirloin and the other had the Chicken Dish from the Specials board, they were not disappointed.Lastly, my friend had the Mixed Grill, not something he would normally have, he said that everything about it was first class, with his particular favourites being the black pudding, which he gave everyone a piece to try, we asked the genial owner when he came over to ask if we were enjoying our evening where he got the black pudding, it's from Napiers in Egremont. the sausage and the gammon were also both excellent.We really shouldn't have had dessert, but Clare, who described what was on offer with great enthusiasm plus her own recommendations, convinced us to have a go, I went for Clare's recommended home made cheesecake with Hartleys ice cream and it was fantastic.Great Staff, wonderful food and terrific service at prices that wont break the bank, plus of course the very genial host who added to the experience.We will be back for sure.

I came here for lunch last Saturday I certainly won't be going else where. great atmosphere so ended up staying for the match

Only stayed for a couple of drinks before dinner but the welcome from the locals and owner were amazing so much so were back again this week for a tribute band and a good pint or three.

Very good food for very reasonable price. Friendly service. As well as evening entratinment on some Saturdays incluidng Karaoke, disco, play your cards right & quiz night.

I have always been impressed with the food served here

We went there a few weeks ago for Sunday lunch. It was our first time there and I would like to say the food was excellent. We live in the same village and it does not seem to get full, for this reason we were apprehensive about going. It was very quiet, and I think people should give it a try, we would defiantly return again for Sunday lunch, not one little complaint. Best that we had for a long time.
