The waitress was indifferent to us as we entered and this should have been a warning. We had 3 very bad courses. A chowder as thin as water with what looked like frozen veg floating in it and little fish. Then a risotto sitting in a thin liquid and rice cooked to mush. Also the arbroath smoked pancake was small & thin, with little filling and no visible creamed leeks which were on the menu. We spoke to the sales assistant when we payed and he defended all the meals and told that's how a chowder should be !! He wasn't apologetic in any way. The poor quality of food and service was awful.

Awful!!!. A close friend visiting from England loves seafood and I thought a trip to The Boathouse in Arbroath, on the coast, would make a pleasant day out, with the highlight being a good lunch. I'd eaten here before and found the food to be acceptable and decently priced. I chose a dish from the set lunch menu, which I'd eaten and enjoyed on a previous visit, for my main ( Hake served on a bed of Lemongrass scented Risotto ). For a starter I selected Arbroath Smokie Chowder. I presumed this would be similar to a New England Clam Chowder or our own Cullen Skink. How wrong could I be! What was served was a generous bowl of thin watery stock, lacking in substance, apart from a few uniformly cubed, undercooked pieces of carrot and potato, which looked like they'd come straight from a catering bag of frozen veg, and minus much evidence of any fish. Inedible! I complained politely to our charmless waitress, who said she'd report the matter to the kitchen. She returned quickly, not to inform me of any apology or reparation, but to reveal the the Hake was no longer an option but I could have Cod with the Risotto instead. Hungry by this point, I agreed. My dining partner was equally unimpressed with her starter which bore little resemblance to the illustration on the menu, but succeeded in choosing a reasonable Blackened Salmon Caesar Salad for her main. I, unfortunately, was served a bowl of sloppy over cooked rice floating in too great a quantity of oddly flavoured sauce, containing unidentifiable morsels of vegetation; set, forlornly, in the middle of which was a tired looking lump of Cod. The poor fish had died in vain. The woolly texture spoke of inexperienced treatment in the cooking process. Sadly, the management charged my companion full price, denied there was anything wrong with the meal or the skill of his chef, despite our polite protestations to the contrary. The service was mediocre, the atmosphere was chilly owing to a malfunctioning air conditioning system, but both pale into insignificance compared to the obdurate and recalcitrant attitude of the manager. We shall not trouble him with our patronage again.

One of the waiters obviously not very happy to serve us from the very beginning, gave me impression that she’s not very happy to serve Asian or non western. We feel very unwelcome from the very beginning. She gave us the table where I didn’t have enough space even to sit properly, very close to other lady ( our back almost touch each other ) while there’s plenty space just for two of us. At the beginning I thought I would love to come back, but with this kind of service, I don’t think we would come back

Your management need to take a serious look at your staff, or is it the 2024 virus, just glad to get someone. Service, terrible by all 3 staff we encountered. You can't have dogs there, it's only a la carte, move your dogs. Absolute disgrace by all your staff, there are ways to talk to people. Good luck over the quiet months when you treat people like that, and all 3 staff were standing doing nothing when I entered. This was on Aug 30th around 5 pm if you want to narrow it down. And not a soul on your precious decking. Disgraceful customer service. And your toilets were out of paper, female

This is one of our favourite places to have lunch; we don't go very often but probably head up from Dundee every couple of months. Today we had a swim at Broughty Ferry beach first, and were in about twenty minutes, which is longer than usual. By the time we got to Arbroath the chill had set in... A waitress ( not our server) could see I was cold. She offered me a blanket, then brought two and helped me wrap up, which was the sweetest thing. Lunch was also delish; as usual

Very good food and atmosphere I definitely recommend it. However today we had a very bad experience with one of the waitresses. We were sitting outside, and we had just given our order, but we decided to move to a table in the sun because we were in the shade and it felt cold. As we were standing up to get to the other table the waitress shouted at us because the tables are numbered. I had not noticed that, and I understand it might create a problem when paying the bill, but it was an honest mistake and there is not reason to get shouted at. I hope this did not happen because we were speaking another language, but it definitely made me feel very unwelcome and sad.

What a disappointing first (and last) experience! Have the staff had their pay demand rejected or something? From the moment we entered this restaurant and we were pointed to where our booked table was instead of being taken there right through to the dessert, from the customer service perspective it was very poor. None of the staff who waited on our table even broke a smile of tried to engage with us in any way apart from the standard" what would you like". The restaurant was very busy initially and that may have contributed to the lack of basic customer service but never the less !! The food, by the way was delicious as were the desserts but to serve half of our table their dessert and the others not get theirs until those served first had finished is unacceptable. The restaurant needs to understand that people don't just go their to eat, they go to eat together. The answer to my query as to where our desserts were was that different desserts are made up in separate sections of the kitchen!!! So there's no coordination to ensure tables are served their meals at the same time??

I have been here on numerous occasions and have to say I have never been disappointed until now. Party of 5, one being a youngster and a bill of over £200. I have to say 4 meals were good, I choose a starter and a main from the “specials”. Whitebait which was cooked in the same fryer as the fish and tasted like a chippy, I did not complain just thought I’ll not order that again. My main was a whole Plaice, was not greatly presented but could overlook this, the fish itself was all stringy and mushy, it slipped through the prongs of the fork and had no taste. It ended up a mushy mess in the liquid at the bottom of the plate. I told the waitress that I was disappointed with the meal and had to ask twice to speak to someone to be told this was the nature of the fish and no one else had complained about it. The young lad who came with the bill was very rude and on leaving with the bill paid in full as they refused to accept the fish was unacceptable I stopped to thank the waitress as she had been lovely, and to tell the owner that I was very disappointed with the attitude we had received, he smirked and nodded his head at me, I will never be back either here or his chippy as I found his attitude was that he knew my meal was unacceptable but did not care one bit, for an owner to act like that I find totally unacceptable

Very good. On a rainy day visit to Arbroath it was great to have some Smokies here. Views out over the sea wall /Harbour. Service was prompt and friendly. About the best venue in town (that we saw on our 1.5 hour walkabout).

Great location and food was absolutely supurb, we wanted seafood and were spoilt for choice on the menu. Both my wife and I had the fish pie for main course - made with smokies and absolutely delicious. Starters were also good, Fish pate and oatcakes for my wife and I had the mussels - both v good. Wine was also excellent. A long time since I had a meal out this good, we will definitely be back.

Last minute decision, phoned and made a reservation. On arrival, a nice friendly welcome and taken to our table. The specials were explained to us and we all made our choices. Food and drink were exceptional. I can highly recommend the Oysters. Waiting staff were brilliant and friendly and I can only apologise for tripping over the owner on my crutches!!! First time here, but will be on our list of restaurants in the local area that we choose to go to!!!

Lovely setting by the sea. Great local standard dishes including fresh haddock. Also good variety of more upmarket plates. Look forward to returning.

Only had some coffees which was nice. Comfortable seating and a nice view of the harbour. Didn't eat so cannot comment on the food but what we saw was huge pieces of cake that looked really nice. Staff were welcoming.

Some great seafood - scallops were first class. Chowder was weak and watery. Dog area only outside on flags not on decking is a ridiculous rule.

Arrived as unbooked walk-ins at midday 5/10/23. Staff so welcoming and attentive with wonderful food at very reasonable price given the portion size and quality. Had hoped to find a lovely restaurant overlooking the marina and this exceeded all our expectations. Best of all the staff suggested other places in Arbroath to visit to help make for a truly lovely day. This restaurant and the folk who work there are a real credit to Arbroath and great ambassadors for the town. Thank you.

Food was mediocre to poor Quality certainly does not match the inflated prices charged Essentially the quality of a chippy meal and not a particularly good one Service slow

We had a great meal in this lovely restaurant. We were in Arbroath specifically for the smokies my husband had wanted to try for very many years and this was our first taste. We both had them for starters (there were various ways you could have them). Then I had halibut, one of my very favourite fish, and it was delicious. Husband had equally delicious sea bass. Restaurant was very busy but service was good and staff were efficient and charming. We went back another day for morning coffee and cake - very good. They also serve breakfast. We'd love to go back.

A beautiful spot, away from the cities and steps from the beach. I found this spot during planning a 2 week road trip around Scotland and I’m glad that I did. The estate offers camping as well as rooms in the main house, it’s also a working farm. I stayed in the main house just one night. As it was off season it was relatively quiet. The room was spacious, the bathroom offered a great bathtub/shower combination. There was a couch, and side table, and of course a kettle with a selection of teas. The bed was very comfortable. In the morning I headed over to the beach for sunrise, it’s 5-10 minute walk from the main farm house to the path up to the dunes. For me it’s always really nice to be close to the water and enjoy the sounds and scent of the sea. The staff were very gracious and welcoming. The breakfast was fabulous, offering traditional “full Scottish” breakfast to a la carte items that you may prefer, as well as a variety of juices, coffee, tea, toast, pastries and cereal. I’d definitely stay again!

Worst nights sleep I’ve ever had, was like something out of a horror movie, outdated decor, beds were so uncomfy I would have been better sleeping on the floor, and window was jammed open so I was cold all night because the sheets were paper thin and pillows were super thin aswell! I woke up the next day and was told there was no one at the reception so I would have to leave out another door there was literally no one there but who I hope was a cleaner because I gave her my room key! Hard pass!
