The George Hotel Restaurant and Bar in Angus

The Food was amazing and was fast service although the staff were very sour faced and not very inviting.

We were impressed by the friendly welcome from the waitress and by the wide selection on the menu. Steak and Ale pie and Gammon and Pineapple were both delicious and the smaller portions ordered were more than sufficient for us. Very good value for money and we will definitely be back again. DM

Our family booked us a room in this hotel as a treat for my husbands birthday and Mother’s Day ,they also booked us all for dinner (9 of us) We came to the restaurant on time ,were quickly seated, menus brought and drinks order taken.All but one in our party ordered starters, they duely arrived and were fine, however the main course menu was a total let down.Firstly no serrated edged knives were supplied with the steak and gammon dishes,4 in our party had burgers which were so overcooked they were completely dry and tasteless,at no time did any member of staff check to see if everyone was satisfied with their meals. When we had finished eating the waitress did ask about our meal and we complained about the burgers, shortly after a lady appeared who I can only assume was either a member of management or a member of the kitchen staff. When we discussed the complaint regarding the burgers we were told we should have complained earlier ,not the end of the meal,when we asked what difference that would have made she said further orders of the meal could have been made. Her attitude was not one of trying to sort the matter out ,but to put the blame on the diners,she relented after a lengthy discussion and the 4 meals were not charged for.We retired to our room later ,which we found to be clean and ok,however my sons room was up on the top floor with no end suite facilities but private facilities on the landing,strange considering it was a family room and my son was the sole occupant. The saving grace of the stay was the breakfast,EXCELLENT,also the breakfast waitress who was a treasure. Sorry but can’t recommend the restaurant,rooms passable ,breakfast excellent.

Terrible meal. My wife had the soup of the day. Tomato and had 2 spoonfuls. I had a prawn cocktail which was decidedly average. She had steak pie which was awful. Frozen veg and tasteless potatoes

Delicious food, huge portions, excellent staff and great value for money. Booking is highly recommended as this place is always busy but with a great atmosphere. We were recommended The George by several locals who each claimed to never have had a bad meal and I can now agree as the food was absolutely delicious! The only problem was narrowing down the choice! There are smaller portions of dishes as well which, don’t be fooled, are still big but save on some pennies too. Highly recommend The George!

After being let down by another restaurant on a busy Saturday night, the George managed to fit us (4 adults and 2 dogs) in at short notice. Very friendly and accommodating, and the food was great. We’ve been in previously with the dogs for coffees and for lunch and they were equally friendly and helpful then too. Highly recommend.

I told Karen I had an electric mobility scooter, THAT was no problem! we just had to knock on the side door to be let in, my hubby told Karen I couldn't sit on a hard chair, THAT was no problem! Karen put a lovely comfortable chair with cushions for me at the table right next to the door that we came in and I was able to park my scooter behind me. Serving staff were very friendly, attentive and efficient and the food was just superb and reasonably priced. We dined two nights and the food and service on the second night was equally excellent. Looking forward to our next visit and we highly recommend the George restaurant and bar.

Checked opening times on menus posted outside in the afternoon which said open until 21.00. On returning at 20.10 told by barstaff that the kitchen had closed at 20.00 and the menus outside were out of date.

My wife and I popped in for a drink and decided to stay for dinner. Although it looks like a bar there is little space for drinking so it really is a restaurant. Before I went I was recommended the meat pie and told that the portions were huge. My meat pie was lovely and the portions were big. My wife had the beef stroganoff, which was good and again, a large portion. The restaurant let itself down by trying to serve a warmish Pinot Grigio. I didn’t even taste it, just picking up the warm bottle was enough. They changed it for the house Sauvignon Blanc that was properly chilled. Good found at a reasonable price. Keep an eye on. The wine temperature.

We booked our short break to the George in the spur of the moment but we’re not disappointed The receptionist on the phone was very informative and told us about the special dining offer warning us the portions were generous and she wasn’t kidding. The room was immaculate and roomy with a massive super king sized bed wall mounted flat screen tv 3 huge windows make the room airy and bright and the contemporary en suite shower room was perfect. The main meals are served in the popular lounge with a designated section for residents eating the drink was keenly priced as was the food. The portions were as described generous to say the least our deal was for breakfast and a 3 course dinner, although totally delicious we were unable to finish the three courses. The staff were very efficient and friendly and keen to please making our stay memorable and enjoyable. We would not hesitate in returning to the George as its position just of the town centre and beach made it a perfect place to stay.

I have eaten out at the George Hotel for years.Its our go to place as you know you will always get a lovely meal at a reasonable price with good service in pleasant cosy surroundings. Was really disappointed though last night when I went for a meal with friends.Staff were very attentive on arrival taking drink and food orders, food arrived in good time but the service otherwise was really poor.They left the table cluttered with used glasses and side plates from soup course throught our meal.Once main meal was served they seemed to loose interest in us, after sitting with empty plates for a good 45 mins ,we had to call them over in the end as we wanted coffees.They cleared plates but left all the empty glasses. It wasn't as if they were rushed off their feet there were only 3 tables and by the time we left we were the only people there. Just poor customer service, just didn't seem to want to be bothered. I ate there just a few weeks ago and it was a totally different experience. It won't stop be returning as food always great, but I feel staff need more training.

Out for a family meal, we don't meet very often as live far apart. Decided on The George as had been last year and loved it. Where do I start... The seats were crammed in so much, you either had to ask the person behind you to move or the person beside you to get up if you wanted the toilet or to leave your chair. Sat with jackets on as the air vent was blowing cold air on us. 3 of the 4 meals were bland, watery and just not good enough for the money. Over £15 for macaroni cheese and chips - I sent it back. No flavour, watery sauce. How can a chef get something so basic wrong?? Didn't want to order anything else as had no confidence in the menu after trying the other meals and they were below average at best. One of the meals was wrong and the waiter completely ignored me by walking away which delayed time in getting it replaced. Always awkward when you're the only one sitting there with no food for a good 10 minutes. The staff just didn't seem bothered - had to approach them to make a complaint. And after I did so, we received no service AT ALL. Not to check if we wanted more drinks / desserts /the bill. Or not even to see if everything had been rectified. They took the price of 2 meals off the bill after I complained which was appreciated but definitely necessary. Really need to work on customer service skills and the food itself. Not a good experience at all

Terrible service. Sat waiting to order for 20 minutes. Finally ordered and had to wait 40 minutes with still no sign of food. When asked they went to check and never returned. When asked again it was apparent they had not put the order through. Very unprofessional service and without a care in the world. Wouldn’t recommend.

Booked a table for my Wife and myself with our son and grandkids in tow. I had the Fajita's which were excellent. I over indulged and struggled to finish my meal which is not me. I would have liked the Fajitas to be served sizzling on the hot plate, true to Fajita style but this was a small point. kids meals were bigger that the kids could manage but they gave them a good go. service was superb and could not be faulted. Heading back next week but change my food choice i have heard that the Scampi is good. see you all there

We were staying at the Links hotel for three nights. Unfortunately on Sunday night they had no staff in the kitchen so we came to the George for dinner and drinks. What a pleasure that proved to be. We had four different mains courses and desserts. Food was very good indeed. Drinks we had superb draught Guinness and lager and a bottle of Sauvingnon Blanc... Wicked lady. Service was tremendous. Pleasing to at the young waiting staff were excellent. Monday evening we ate at the Links food very good but 40minute delay from kitchen. So on Wednesday we had dinner again at the George. This time we had the small portions of mains all excellent again. Unfortunately the only dessert was a Key lime pie. Quite sharp served with a synthetic cream foam. Not the same quality as mains. Service was excellent again with very efficient staff.

Had a wonderful meal at the George. Very good variety on the menu - literally something for everyone, including High Tea, and smaller portions. The Beef Stroganoff I had was cooked beautifully. Good selection of wine and drinks on offer. Staff just lovely - service was excellent

was invited to lunch by my solicitor, , we found The George busy. in the bar with most off the tables taken , we were fortunate to find a table, we were asked if we wanted a drink, which was fine, but that sadly for me was where it ended , it took ages to for our order to be taken,and another time, for it to arrive, the food when it did arrive was tasty as I ordered the fish, the chips were from the freezer and peas ordinary. because off the time taken my my Solicitor didnt have a lot off time so we only had a Main course., trying to pay the bill at the bar took ages, to get someone attention. and I was informed when the waitress did arrive there was only a Barmaid and a Receptionist on doing food, they needed another 2 pairs off hands , the girls did there best , but the whole place lacked leadership and direction.

Staying in Montrose for a night and went here for my tea. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere was great. Service was prompt and then when my main course arrived - wow! A huge portion and very tasty. Quite fancied the cheesecake for dessert but had to pass as was so full.

have been here before so was expecting a better meal than we got. Is it a new chef as bar staff seemed the same(older ones). Main meal was spoilt by the gravy being too salty, this was caused by it not being proper gravy but "gravy granules" as I was told when I mentioned it....make your own your supposed to be a restaurant. Desert was OK but spoilt by using cheap thin chocalate sauce and "can" cream instead of fresh. Overall was disappointed by the visit. Be a while before we go back there

Had an amazing meal on Christmas Day. The food and service was excellent. Being a regular customer I am always impressed and would thoroughly recommend.

A nice light size meal. No choice of sweet with the two course menu, but we could have paid extra for one on the main menu. Didn't say that when we ordered of the light menu. 2 course for a price of £8.75? Expected to have a choice of sweets at no extra cost!

Website is great, and they reply really quickly to email enquiries. There's a really good selection of drinks, toilets were clean and nice, and the front area is pretty much your typical pub restaurant type way which was fine. The waiter was friendly and took our order for drinks quickly and gave us our menus. It was more little things, our menus were splattered with something and a bit manky looking lol, but the choice was great, and really really reasonable choices. Our food did take a while and so did the couples next to us there's no way getting round that. We ordered baguettes and the room was sort of so so busy, and it took half an hour. In saying that when the food came it was lovely, generous portions and very tasty so swings and roundabouts. It'd have been nice to have been asked if we wanted another drink while waiting and empty glasses were sitting and again the same with the other couple, it was grab a waiter time but nothing massive just little things. The parking is dead handy as well.

Il personale molto cordiale e attento a non parlare con un accento scozzese molto stretto con i turisti, dunque comprensivi. Prezzi nella media e arredo tendezialmente tipico scozzese.

We tried to eat early Saturday evening, but the place was booked up. We stayed for a quick drink and I was glad we did as the Taylor's Landlord was truly excellent.

We went to the George Hotel Restaurant as the place we wanted to go had just closed their kitchen 5 mins before we arrived. The wait staff were quite nice and friendly, the decor was quite quaint and our drinks came promptly. I had the Singapore sling and my husband had a lager. Singapore sling was slightly on the sweet side but still very nice. We started with the haggis Bhajis, which were quite nice. next we had the steak and ale pie and the Scampi. Scampi was fine, but the pie filling had chewy and gristly chunks of meat in it which was not nice and my husband was unable to eat it all.

Booked for a family birthday meal with a baby and 6 year old in toe, on entry was very welcoming, food was great i would highly recomend the beef stroganoff great choice of menu for adults and kids and being out that little bit later did'nt feel intrusive by having kids with us, great night had and value for money excellent

Visited twice last week once for lunch and once for dinner. The food was great with the best ever sticky toffee pudding and I am a connoisseur on the subject having tasted many. This was definitely home made beautifully light topped with a generous delightful sauce. Don’t miss it. The rest of the meal was excellent too with good choice of menu. What also attracted me was being offered a choice of portion size. This is in my view is very important when choosing somewhere to eat. The staff were friendly and helpful. Also a good car park opposite the hotel. I will definitely return on my next visit to the area of Scotland.

The best and the freshest mussels I’ve even eaten! My husband ordered a smoked haddock and he absolutely loved it. The service is not the best, but the food makes it worth it. The environment is great and cozy, specially if you seat close to the fire places.

Have been here fairly often since the the hotel opened many years ago and been impressed with the menu choice and the friendly staff - this has not changed I'm pleased to say.

We visit regularly because the food is excellent. We had a family pre Christmas meal the week before a Christmas and as always it was excellent. The hotel was full on this night and we were seated in the function room, which was fine. The service was very good and all 6 of us thought the food was lovely. It is always tricky to cater for a lot of people but I couldn’t fault the service. The staff work immensely hard. We were back on Friday for a bar supper and again enjoyed the food.

Usually go to the George and have always had a good experience, however was there last week for a special occasion and it was awful from start to finish. My son went back with his glass as it was covered in lipstick and the bar manageress sighed and rolled her eyes at him. We eventually had our order taken, the young waiter came over to say there was a delay for food which was fair enough. The wait continued and the same rude bar manageress came to our table. I asked where our food was and she said it would be out soon and barked or do you want to leave. We said if it was only another 5 minutes we would stay and the food is normally worth the wait, to which she flounced off saying well I was going to offer you a free round of drinks. We didn't want drinks we wanted our food. After an hour and 30 minutes our food arrived, the sweet and sour pork was swimming in grease, the stroganoff was burnt, the onion and the mushrooms were black and the sauce was terrible. We could hardly eat anything, the manageress retreated when we went to pay and left the poor young waiter to deal with us. Appalling management, poor customer service and terrible food. Heard the couple at the next table complain about their wait and he quality of the steak and also the waiter had to apologise to another table also. Won't be back and a special birthday meal ruined.

Went for xmas lunch which was not too bad however the manner and service from the staff was shocking not what I would have expected would not recommend

This restaurant has always had a very good reputation for not only its food but also for the service. If anything they have improved since my last visit as they have made changes in their menu and in addition they offer small portions for those who want it. Another plus is their excellent value for money.

Over the years I have frequented this establishment and have always had a friendly welcome. This time I found the staff off hand and got the impression I was a nuisance wanting to order a drink after having waited at least five minutes after joining our friends at a pre reserved table.The food was good but I’m afraid the off hand attitude will not entice me back anytime soon

Very popular place to eat in Montrose. Food very good in the Bar/Bistro. Delicious meals but portions far too big. Most people we saw left food on their plate. Staff good when paying attention, but didn't always see customers who wanted to order food or drinks.

During my stay at the George hotel. I took diner every night at the restaurant. there are a lot of variant. and lot of choices. the service was perfect. Do not miss the dessert, it was Succulent. The mocktail drinks was good.

Ate in the bar area, comfortable and well decorated surroundings, service was quick and friendly, just ordered a main and the portion size is amazing, no room for dessert unfortunately!

We have been travelling the UK for 3 weeks and this was one of the best meals we have had! We both had salmon and it was delicious. The staff were friendly and we would definitely recommend here for a meal.

I've been here a lot and never had an unpleasant experience yet. If you like big portions then this is the place for you - I just look as though I like these portions but the smaller ones are still more than enough for me at the one time. I would recommend here to anyone but phone to make sure they are not full especially in the evening or weekends.

Definitely a no go unfortunately. The staff are untrained and rude, and it takes a ridiculous amount of time to get service, often having to go up to the bar yourselves for drinks and the bill. The food was piled onto the plate without any care and looked unappealing when served, it was also extremely greasy and way too much food. Sadly I saw others in the same situation getting fed up and trying to get the attention of staff to either send food back or ask for things.

I had the single burger along with a pint of Landlord. My colleague had the chicken stroganoff. Both meals were excellent, quantity and quality being generous to a fault, although I could have done without as much if any of the portion of coleslaw. The car park across the road was a plus due to the weather that day. The waiting service was efficient, prompt and courteous. Toilets clean and well maintained. Certainly recommend this place to others.

Hi 2nd time here at the george for lunch, first time( a year or so ago) was awful but manager sorted out my complaint at the time, gave them another chance and went back today, superb! lovely young waiter, very polite and quick, ordered a cheeseburger and chips, very quick and tasty! mother in law ordered gammon which she enjoyed followed by a superb special dessert of the day which was scrumptious with fresh cream, cannot fault the food or service today with a nice atmosphere, will go back.

We booked our table for 6people to celebrate my sons birthday. We have been here before and it's why we booked again as we have never been disappointed in the past. But!! Last nights meal was a disappointing disaster to say the least! We had a 1hr and 10 min wait for our starters to come out, no one came to apologies or explain why we had this wait, I had to ask what the problem was, the explanation was that in the other dining room was a rather large group and they were extremely busy. My argument is why would the take on more customers that what they can handle? And when the starters did arrive the chilly nachos had no chilly they had run out! And the 2 creamy garlic mushrooms were inedible! They are normally beautiful we have never had to complain in the past, they did offer to get chef to make more but by this time we didn't want to wait another 1hr and 10 min for another starter! So we just put them back. I said that this was radicals and they said their was nothing they could do! I said they could at least hive us a round of drinks, which they did, and we were told the starters would be taken off the bill. Another 35 min before the mains came out, and 3of us had the chicken goujons they were nice but the plates were swimming in oil, my son and his girlfriend had burgers that were extremely well fired me personally I would have sent them back but by this time we were so fed up with it all! My husbands chicken burger was cold and his words! You could sole his boots with it! I must say this is the first time we have ever had anything to complain about at the George, but feel that the staff weren't very apologetic, when paying our bill their was no apologies no explanation. This has left a very taste!!! And as a result we wouldn't be coming back! They really shouldn't take on so much bookings when they simply can't handle it!!!

Just had a dinner for my grandsons birthday. We went into hotel at 6.55 and left at 9.45 pm.!!!!!!We waited an HOUR for our starters only to be told there was no chilli for nachos!!!Mushrooms in creamy sauce could not be eaten. Sauce was very suspect! Main courses were an improvement, although the chicken goujons were "swimming" in grease. The burgers were "very well grilled". The starters were deducted from the bill, which incidentally was wrong as well. Just another mistake. Wouldn't recommend George Hotel to anyone, in fact I would discourage them. Never be back.

Recommended to come here by the staff, at House of Dun, it was very busyand had a good buzz about it, nice decor ,table all clean, we went for the burgers and they were both cooked just right , with chips , staff were all friendly and we waited for only 10/15 mins for our food , so it all cooked to order which I likeMy only slight complaint would be staff stood talking around the till one minute,and then no one there when people came to pay , there were 6 on while we were there , but will go backto try something else .

We have just spent the weekend in the George Hotel Montrose. The rooms were nicely decorated. All the staff from the house cleaner to the bar staff and waitresses were terrific. On the first morning Sunday, We mistakenly taken the wrong time for the breakfast to end, As we were past the time we phoned the front desk, 'no problem' just come down they made us a cooked breakfast! fantastic.The first night we were there. we decided to eat in the hotel, the service was fast friendly, PORTIONS WERE HUGE! even BREAKFAST. You certainly wont come away hungry after a stay at the George. We stayed on the night of the Scot v Eng game, so the pubs and clubswere very busy. Ask for a room at the back, and it's quieter.

I popped in for a drink and was treated with a friendly atmosphere and good drinks. Definitely an option for meeting up with friends or like me a solo trip to the watering hole.

We were a party of around 40 who enjoyed a meal here at the end of an outing. We had chosen our main course before hand so it didn't take long for the food to arrive. Before then we had tea or coffee and toast. The cold meat platter which I had was enormous! My wife had the fish which she said was delicious. Then there was a choice of dessert, followed by scones, jam and cream! More tea/coffee was brought throughout the meal. Tasty and it didn't break the bank!!

I spent the last 2 nights staying at the George Hotel and found the staff to be extremely good. From the friendliness of reception to the bar and waiting staff nothing was too much trouble.The owner is a delightful lady who clearly cares about her staff and customers.Breakfasts were perfect and just what was needed after working long hours the day before. I had lunch on my second day just a sandwich but it was no scraped sandwich. FULL of prawns plus a side salad that was fresh and in a larger than expected quantity. What is interesting is that the previous reviewer was there at the same time as I was and all the staff were working extremely hard.I had two meals which were delicious and large portions. Above the quality that you would expect of a 3* town hotel.Rooms were spotless, comfortable and welcoming. This is a quaint seaside town hotel in an older building and the team have done a great job in making it modern without losing the character of the building.As a travel agent I thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Went here for lunch. There were 2 waiters (young lads) who basically stood in front of us while we waited for our order. Eventually, the waitress who was clearly busy came and took our order. It took a very long time for our basic food to come out (there seemed to be something going on in kitchen). We all had wraps, my daughters enjoyed theirs, mine seemed to have been microwaved. The onion rings were great though.

The George hotel in Montrose is a family run business the same owners for 26yrs, they have built up a fabulous reputation in and around the town, all the staff are friendly and helpful, from advice on your meal to running you off a bus timetable for local use, it's a old hotel dating back to about 1800s, the rooms are all up to date and housekeeping staff are always on hand to help, food is local cooked from fresh and plenty of it, it's a beautiful place.

I eat here regularly and the food is lovely. A varied menu to suit all tastes and good value. Best to book in advance as always busy.

It was our first visit to this restaurant and I would 10/10 go back. I had the chicken curry which is one of the best curries I have eaten outside of an Asian restaurant and still think about sometimes, longingly waiting to go back. On top of this I had a very lovely cocktail, prepared fresh at the bar as well as a slice of their homemade cheesecake which was divine, and I found room for it despite being stuffed. Although all this took a little longer than expected to come out, it was worth the wait as it was all prepared fresh and the staff were very nice.

Ordered chicken burger with chips washed down with local ale. Perfect pub food to refuel after a long drive. Bar was playing 80's music which was also good and the staff were helpful, friendly and efficient.

Excellent Menu. Prompt service even though it was Saturday night and hotel busy. Chose the small meals option as we had noticed the meals were on the large side. This was excellent value for money.

Very comprehensive menu, served quickly and efficiently. Good value for money,We had a varied family but everyone had what they wanted
