We went to the the Bakery and tearooms today only to find it no longer has a cafe' ,we found the cafe' while looking on their site ,there was no mention of it being closed permanently ,I think they need to adjust their website to let people know this . We waisted a 40 mile round trip because of this .

Have had several meals here, mainly breakfast and lunch. The food is always excellent and you'd have to go a long way to get better chips! Yes, the service is not always super fast, but if that's what I wanted I'd go to a fast food place not one where the food is excellent because it is prepared and cooked well.

Took forever to take order even though not busy even longer for food to come. Tables too close and table cloths dirty not cleaned between customers staff not wearing marks. Won’t be back!

On holiday staying nearby. Called in for a break from the rain. Lovely friendly service. I had the scone and jam cream tea, husband had the pork bap and children both had sausage sandwiches. They were happy to change the bread for our fussy toddler. Food was lovely. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and recommended a few day trips for the rest of our holiday.

My husband myself and a couple of friends visited the cafe 22/1/20 I had a tea cake well done which is what I asked for. My husband a Tai vegetable pasty he said it was really tasty, he has tried several ones now and he has liked them all. My friends had tea and a full English breakfast which was good value. It is a little cramped and there is only one table downstairs the rest are upstairs which au be difficult for some people. The women who served us is so friendly and really makes you feel welcome this is about my 4th visit with longish spells in between, but she remembers you little touches such as remembering the perfume we had on last time, she is so friendly you looked forward to going there she cheers you up. The variety of food is really good and excellent value.

A little cramped upstairs but comfortable. Good quality food and a really friendly helpful blonde lady who served us.

We've often bought the scrumptious baked goods at this bakery when enjoying a day out in Stanhope ( I can vouch for the great pork and black pudding pies ) but this was a first visit to the tearoom upstairs. A good selection of hot and cold food and pleasant service.

The ham broth soup was disgusting. When I complained she said others had complained about the salt. It was foul. She said the staff below would not accept the criticism. She wanted me to talk to them. It's not my business to sort it. What annoys me is the fact she lets people order something knowing its foul. It wasn't a small amount of salt it was massive amounts of salt. Cafe upstairs. Avoid this strange uncaring place.

My first impression of this upstairs cafe was that the food is very good, but to get the food you have to pass their integrity tests. The young lady who served us wore glasses that could see us after 5 minutes, but not the crumbs on the table, or the crud on the fork tines. As such, it took two asks before the tablecloth was removed and replaced clean, but I had to exchange the cutlery myself, and our service tip reflected this. This was one of those places screaming out for a cleaning blitz. I’m not saying avoid, but if I saw something nice on their menu, it would have to be a takeaway. Otherwise wait till the lady serving gets new glasses that can see crumbs and tine clag.

My husband, friend, and I visited the bakery today. We have been several times but our friend hadn’t. We had 2lattes I pot of tea, and a Fentimans Ginger drink. We had 1fruit scone with Jam and cream, one without, plus a vegetarian pie. The tea room is quaint a bit nippy, but the service is friendly and very helpful. The food is delicious scones melt in the mouth. Coffee hot which doesn’t happen very often. Total bill just over £13.00. There is a table downstairs if anyone has problem with stairs, which are quite steep, the toilet is also upstairs. We think it is a little gem.

We visited yesterday (Nov 6th) on a cold wet day and found a wonderful warm welcome. The tea rooms is old fashioned in the nicest possible way, black leaded fireplace, English bone china and tempting home made cakes. We had the best omlettes we have ever eaten served with home made chips and lovely fresh salad. The food was cooked fresh for us and was well worth the wait as it was really delicious! We have paid far more for less good food in other places. We were too full for desert so we bought chocolate cake and paradice slice to take home for tea. We are on holiday in the area and this was a real traditional county Durham treat for us.

Today I went into the bakery and bought a square of quiche, a square of mars bar slice and a square of what we call firelighter. The Mars Bar Square and the Firelighter( which is rice crispies tossed in melted butter marshmallows and toffee) both of these were soft. If made and kept in air tight containers theses should be beautiful these were fit for the bin. Not only where they soft but the mars bar cake the small bite I had tasted very strongly of mint which isnt good if you dont like mint. The quiche the pastry was soft and tasted of salty onion and nothing more. My opinions only but to get things as basic as this wrong will let the place down.

The ground floor has many savory baked goods like a Traditional Pasty and a Chicken and Mushroom Pie. There are also salads, bread, and sweet pastries. On the second floor is a tea room with its own menu, plus you can order any of the items from the bakery. The tearoom owner is very friendly and the food quite good. We had lunch, plus tea and a latte. A good stop in Stanhope.

Home-made shortcrust steak pie with mash and gravy - a guaranteed winner at lunchtime on a cool day. We found this place above the bakery quite by chance. Old fashioned maybe (deliberate?), and really charmed by the young lady serving us.

I have been using this bakery for lunches while working in the area for about 12 years. Delicious food and good choice of sandwiches, pastry, cakes and quiches. For work lunches I have a company credit card that I am obliged to use wherever possible. For many years they will take card payments when the tearoom is open upstairs as that is where the card machine is.

Visted this tea room mid afternoon on a Saturday. The food on display in the bakery downstairs looked very appertising and the menu in the upstairs restaurant tempting.

Stanhope on a sunny day was busy, and when we went upstairs there were no free tables; we bought sandwiches to take away - mine was bacon brie cranberry in a "granary bun" - really almost a small loaf! - and delicious. Very reasonable prices, and lovely staff too.
