Visited in September with our 1 year old. Ordered a variety of cakes and drinks, all of which were excellent. Staff went to extra trouble to find an ice cream flavour that our daughter liked. Have visited before for cream tea, and also for lunch, excellent both times. Convenient little cafe when in Totnes

We always visit The Old Bakery when in Totnes for lunch. This was our first visit post Covid. Another excellent lunch was had by the three of us. Lovely Cheese & Tomato sandwich for myself and a very tasty Tuna & Cheese panini for the ladies. Very nice pot of tea too to boot. Thank you.

Ravenous and in need of a hot pasty, me and my partner stumbled across the Old Bakery of Totnes. At first, we thought the pasties looked delicious and the selection was great. How naive we were!! Due to the lack of prices (in fact the labels gave us no clue of the Rip off we were in for!!), we selected a chicken and leek and the traditional Cornish pasty. Just two pasties to eat in, it wasn’t going to cost us the Earth right? This place wasn’t fancy in the slightest, was just as basic as Greggs! So me and my partner were flabbergasted when they had the cheek to charge us over ten whole pounds!! £11.10 for 2 sh*tty pasties! However, the worst was yet to come... the chicken and leek pasty was actually inedible and when we sat down disgruntled already by the mediocre customer service and pure theft of our purses, we were secretly hoping these pasties were going to be something special. They were the opposite. My partner could’ve gotten a better Cornish in Greggs. But mine was by far the worst! It smelt “rancid” in my partners words!! They should’ve called it a blue cheese pasty!! Since when did chicken and leek contain cheese!! The sauce wasn’t creamy at all, just tasted like pure cheese sauce and we were gagging and couldn’t eat it and left immediately as it smelt so rotten! We went up the road, however, and tried “Chunk” and it was a third of the price and edible this time (in fact I couldn’t recommend enough)! Save your money and sanity and avoid the Old Bakery like a bad smell!!!

During a lovely day out In quirky Totnes with my elderly mother , she sadly suffered a horrendous nose bleed . “The Old Bakery “ was a Sanctuary we desperately needed to tend to my mum. I do not know names of staff that day. There was one gentleman who was working . He was kind, helpful, and showed such empathy I had to write this report to express my thanks and also to inform the general public how refreshing to know that good Samaritans are there when we need them ! Thank you Mr Man @ “The Old Bakery “ PS The Lemon Drizzle cake is delicious and was much needed!!! Best wishes Gilly

I will not go back to this place - it is over-priced for what you get and very average in qualify. A small cup of coffee was £1.70, a can of Fanta £1.80 (really!?!) but what really took the biscuit (literally) was that the price for having two quite small shortbread biscuits almost doubled by having them inside (£2.80) instead of take way (£1.50). Just for plonking them on two plates and a short walk to the table - what cheek! And on querying the price differential -which btw was not made clear anywhere - they just didn't care. So in the future I will take my custom to other more reasonable places in Totnes - of which there are very many!

The window was the selling point, which made us visit. We had a variety which included a pasty which was rubbery, and obviously microwaved. Sausage roll was very chewy. Cup cake looked appealing but underneath the mountains of icing the cake was stale. Chelsea bun was huge and thoroughly enjoyed. A mixed bag, but think there are better choices on the high st

Called in on our last visit to the town. Had a nice cup of coffee and a piece of bread pudding that would have fed 2 of us.....it was that big - and I think a mere snip at £1.25. The staff were fine although busy and what looked like new/summer staff but we all have to learn so not complaining. What was nice is that the table we had was more than adequate for 2 people and a lot bigger than a bog standard café table. Would definitely return - and as it was busy when we later passed by this tells you something!

Popped in earlier today and ordered a cream tea for two,a pot of tea and a couple of bakewell tarts. Prices were very reasonable and all came to around the ten pounds mark......the place just seemed a little grubby, the toilet doors were filthy and a few tables that we approached were dirty and needed cleaning. That aside not too bad and the food was quite decent. Visited 12th July 2018.

Visited here this week ( I have been here a few time before) I wonder what has happened? I had the worst lunch ever. The pasty had been microwaved which meant the pastry was chewy the filling well what filling, the steak if you could call it that was sparce and even though pasty had been microwaved it was Luke warm. Swapped the salad to beans another mistake as they to were cold. £7 with a pot of tea never again. The lunch repeated on me all day.

We stopped in this little cafe/bakery for a drink on our way through Totnes. Although the hot chocolate is only produced by a Cadbury machine, it isn't over-priced & comes out plenty hot enough (often hot chocolates seem to be made luke-warm at cafe's). the cafe has a nice, relaxed atmosphere and the staff were friendly. Would definitely come back and give some of the pastries a try!

Popped in here for a couple of Latte's with the good Lady on Monday. Cost of each Latte £2.35, more than fair we thought. Sadly decided to enjoy a steak and pork & cider pasty to accompany our drinks. which we were naturally going to consume at a table. It was obvious & fair from the pricing at the counter that a surcharge of approx 40p per pasty would be added due to VAT laws to heat them. It showed no information at the counter of a further £2 per pasty charge to eat in, only on the table menus. Admittedly you do get included some side salad & coleslaw, But this was not required by either of us. So to accommodate this we received a 50p discount per snack. So still robbed of £3 extra to enjoy a warm dish with our coffee's whilst occupying a table anyway. This is wrong, unfair, unreasonable and damn right Bad customer service. I naturally questioned this rip off, but got nowhere. Well "The Old Bakery" I can assure you I am going to get somewhere with my opinion & disgust. Here for starters, to enlighten your future paying customers away from your ridiculous and excessive charging. And to go to any other premises in Totnes other than yours. As the saying goes " Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Well you did feed us but you also bit our hands, the ones that feed you with our hard earned money. I wouldn't bother with this place, the food is below average and you will leave feeling ripped-off, especially if you have to pay for the privilege to eat in. For example, when ordering a pasty - they only display the prices for take-away, if you want to eat in then it's twice the price and will find this out when you go to pay. Very sneaky in my opinion and I would prefer to know how much it is beforehand. For the price I paid, the pasty was just awful, soggy and not tasty at all. I would avoid this place, especially since there are much nicer places to eat in Totnes.

As previous reviewers have stated, take-away prices acre clearly shown on bakery items in servery but, not eat-in prices. Today we were amazed at a £1.00 take-away sausage roll rocketing to £2.75 if you sat inside. Although this item comes with a salad garnish if you wish, it is the same extortionate price if you decline the garnish. The sausage roll and cheese & spinach slice were difficult to cut. Not particularly fresh and if the eat-in price was displayed we would have gone elsewhere but, I guess that's the idea. Not many people would refuse the items once you are presented with the bill. We didn't like to appear cheap-skates in front of other customers so, payed up.One sausage roll, one feta & spinach slice & two coffees = £9.00You decide........

Popped in for tea and cake, on seeing the reasonable prices on the shelf I was shocked at the extortionate price for the privilege to sit in. A latte, tea and 2 very very average cakes (actually the chocolate biscuit cake was pretty horrid and tasted like it had been made with very cheap ingredients) cost over £9. Lots of stickers saying prices are take away prices, however why don't you set out eat in prices too? Crockery cheap, I ate off a plate from an Ikea range I had whilst at university many years ago, not trying to be too scathing but felt pretty ripped off on walking out...Considering all the other lovely cafes there seems to be in Totnes I would never visit this again.

We ordered and paid for three cream teas but only two were available due to a major scone shortage (this was a bakery)! There were plenty of aimless staff who could have been, perhaps, baking? Half way through our tea we were asked if anyone needed the toilets as they would like to clean them without interruption. There followed a lengthy, and loud, set of verbal instructions about how toilets should be cleaned. Crockery was dropped during this instruction no doubt in amazement that absent staff were being blamed for erroneous toilet cleaning in the past. An off premise sale nearly bit the dust due to the inability of a member of staff to locate the wholemeal bread in the allergy file despite another member of staff repeatedly telling him to look in the bread section. A thoroughly enjoyable experience but don't plan to return and in fact mouthed this to people looking in through the window expectantly..

On departure, I decided to take a Chelsea Bun home for my husband and whilst waiting at the till I notice the younger chef in the kitchen twiddling his hair whilst prepping someone else's food! Surely in his training he would of been taught not to do that especially in eyesight of customers? It makes me question whether or not he actually has any qualifications? Apart from this, I found the service lovely and I was greeted with a smile by the lady who served me and a positive attitude from staff all around. I would return again in hope that the chef gets training, as the knowledge is there just not the hygiene.

Walking in at 2pm, tables were available but they all had previous customers dirty plates on them. We sat down and finally moved the dirty dishes to another table as we were sick of waiting for a waiter to clear the table. Not particularly clean and we had to take condiments from another table. Both ordered a jacket potato. Service was quick. My chicken and bacon filled potato arrived and it was clearly a cheap sandwich filler from the local supermarket. Not homemade. The coleslaw was also cheap and supermarket bought. The salad was a few pieces of shredded lettuce, a slice of cucumber and 1 tomato. Unattractive and tasteless. Add some onion maybe? The jacket potato was beautifully cooked, I won't deny that. I did enjoy it but there are other places that are better in Totnes. The waitress was very ignorant and didn't even bother to ask how our meal was when clearing our table. DO NOT Recommend this bakery as I had awful experience there! They are extremely racist!! The brown hair women behind the counter is very rude and has really bad attitude!! Made me embarrassed front of lots of other customer. I'm a white Hungarian girl but has never had such a bad experience in terms of services before. We asked for cakes and coffee with my friends but without asking me if it's eat in or take away they packed the cakes for us as take away, then without asking me, she just let me know that the berry tart, which was the last one, is collapsing so she will charge only half price! After receiving it I've seen its not even in a box but totally collapsed, so I decided to grab it there quickly as would be hard to take it away. So when I sit down to have it, the women was running out from behind the counter, leaving all the customer there, basically came to my face and on a very loud voice and with a very rude attitude told me the following: 'You'r not supposed to have it here!!! This is take away and you didn't pay service charge to eat in!' I said to her I just wanted to have it here after seeing how collapsed is it, but she didn't even listened to me but asked me to leave, like I was committed a crime or something. I would've been happy to pay that service charge if she kindly asks me but I just left with a red face as everybody was looking at me! She should watch her attitude and learn some proper customer service! No way she could drive her business in London!

After wandering through the beautiful streets of Totnes, the 'old bakery' seemed like the perfect place to rest our weary feet! Never have I been more disappointed! After ordering what seemed like a lovely luxury hot chocolate, and 2panninis andand jacket potato our waitress came over to us, nose dripping sniffing from her cold. This then resulted in her serving our drinks and dropping a big nose dribble on our tray, before scuttling off to the kitchen to loudly giggle, and for the whole resturaunt to hear "GO AND GIVE IT A WIPE LOVE" .... This was the first problem... but then... it got worse. My sister in law was thirsty, so she ordered a refreshing sprite. As she went for a first sip, a smell that can only be described as a raw sewage lingered in the glass.I can only believe that the glass was cleaned in dirty water and that alone was made me to wretch. I wish I had never set foot in here, and all I can say is:DONT GO!

Came in for the first time in several years. Early evening, end of week. We were too early for our booking at a restaurant nor far down and across the road. Friendly in the Barrel House, bit hectic but benign jostling and a good mix of ages, types etc. Fair selection of booze at average current prices. Got a place to sit with a few out and inwards towards the idiosyncratic but interesting crowd. If we hadn’t to leave for a meal and then a music gig down at St Mary’s we’d have easily stayed in the Barrel House all evening.

Like something from Dante's Vision of Hell. With TV screens. A pub for all-day-drinkers (alcoholics), the long term unemployed (unemployable) and thick teenagers. Decent food, easy to order via app or at the bar and came out quick enough as well.

A great local pub in a lovely location. Good beer. Home made pizzas are excellent. Friendly staff and very dog friendly
