Had lunch today, (13th. September 2024), 4 of us, 2 Hake tagliatelle, 1 lamb shank, 1 calamari and prawns plus garlic bread, (as a mains). The 'tender stem', broccoli that came with the lamb, was not possible to cut let alone eat, which was mentioned to the 'servers' to which there was no response from anybody. The Hake was dry, skin not crisps, and a little tough. We ordered Sauvignon Blanc, by the bottle, which was below average, at a price of £27.00!! The brownie was sparse, and again only average. All in all, 2 lime and sodas, pint of Abbot Ale, 2 bottles of Sauvignon Blanc, large glass of Sauvignon Blanc, 1 'chocolate brownie', 1 portion of ice cream, 2 Filter coffees, (the coffee machine was broken), total cost: about £151. Can't say it was 'value for money'!

Dined & stayed here 6th September. Staff all friendly & attentive. Food main courses & breakfast good & reasonably priced. Starter of Nachos disappointing. Bedroom pleasant with all essentials although looked slightly ‘tired’ & worn. Couple of things that would have improved accommodation 1: Black out blind as curtains didn’t block all light out 2: Hook on bathroom door as nowhere to put clothes when showering 3: Mini fridge & fresh milk rather than UHT cartons. Would have preferred not to hear ‘heated debate’ between two members of staff during breakfast.

We have visited and ate here before and was delighted with the food and when we last visited it was really busy which often reflects on how good the food is, however this time that was not the case. When we arrived staff were really friendly and took us to our table, when seated we were told that it was towards the end of service so they only had selected meat however this was at 5 pm on a Sunday which was similar to last time we visited, so we both went to go and order beef roast and then was told only one was available so my partner went with the pork roast instead. Once the food arrived we started to dig in and quickly found that the parsnips and carrots were rock hard I pushed them aside and went on to eat the roast potatoes which were dried out and hard also with no fluffy potato in the middle. We were really disappointed with the quality of the food presented to us so spoke to a member of staff who offered us a refund to which we accepted. Morale of the story is that the veg was either heated up after previously being cooked or was not cooked long enough to begin with. The staff are very friendly and helpful so this is not an issue with customer service but solely quality of food which is as a shame as that along with friendly service is why we came back, I hope these matters reach you well so you may address and improve the issues. Once improved maybe we shall come back.

This is a nice pub to go for a drink. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. There is a nice selection of beers. Prior to Covid this was one of my favourite places to eat. The plate pies were fantastic. My recent experiences of the food have been poor. The steak I ate today was not seasoned, it tasted very oily/greasy, the chips were dry and the onion rings were burnt. The nicest part of the meal was the grilled tomato. I’m sad the food hasn’t been of the standard I expect as the rest of the pub/staff/atmosphere is lovely.

From the gallery photos on the The Oak’s website one gets the impression that the pub is a substantial building set well off the road within its own grounds. Reality on arrival is that it’s far smaller than expected and that it sits in an oppressive heavily wooded copse. Again, the website video would have you think that the interior is a brightly lit well illuminated area with well thought out décor presenting a warm and friendly atmosphere. Reality proved that it was a dark and oppressive open space with numerous tables centred on a large TV screen more resembling a dimly lit village hall. However, having booked a table online for lunch my wife and we ignored our preconceptions and presented ourselves for seating. The staff member who greeted us couldn’t get his iPad to log on to the booking system so that was ignored and we were given a table in the main hall. The first thing noticeable was the temperature. We considered putting our overcoats back on but decided to brave it out, however we noticed two other tables who decided to retain theirs. To be fair whilst this visit occurred during the noticeably cold June of 2024 a little supplementary heating would have been appreciated. Our waiter pointed out the menus and told us to order at the bar. We had already noted a lack of simple starters like a soup option and this was confirmed assertively at the bar by two male staff echoing ‘We Don’t Do Soup!”. Hence we skipped the option and went straight to ordering a burger and fish and chips. Ordering our drinks took two attempts as apparently one half of diet coke and one pint of standard coke was too complicated to get right first time. As we patiently waited, two other parties arrived and after about 40 mins it was evident that they had been served in preference to us. Calling what I presume was the manageress over she told us that our meals were late due to my fish having to be ‘hand battered’ and that took extra time! However, she returned quickly with our order and placed before me what I can only describe as the most pathetic offering of battered fish I have ever been served in my Seventy years on this planet. A slab of anaemic looking batter with the consistency of concrete which revealed a sliver (it would be an insult to call it a filet) no bigger than a quarter inch thick of dried-up fish within. It remained on my table no longer than two minutes before being sent back as totally unacceptable for the asking price of £16. Removing it with a half hearted and obviously insincere apology I was offered no explanation as to why it was so poor. I replaced the meal with the burger that my wife had ordered and to be fair to The Oak that was indeed well cooked and very tasty. Paying up I was still not offered a satisfactory apology nor any explanation. We paid for the two burgers and drinks and left as quickly as we could for coffee elsewhere. Other reviews of this pub mention that it’s grossly overpriced for the quality of food on offer. That would be an understatement in our experience. On our visit at least, it would have been nice if they’d turned the lights on, put a little heat into the place and cooked a presentable fish in batter before serving two other tables ahead of us.

We visited on Tuesday 28th May and the meal we had was a genuine contender for the most unsatisfactory meal i’ve ever had considering the cost. We came as a group of 5. Three of us had starters, I had the chicken in siracha dressing which wasn’t seasoned well, lukewarm and i’m fairly sure was covered in sweet chilli sauce, not siracha. Others had the calamari and scallops and had similar complaints. Two of us had the “award winning” pies which cost £17 each. For that price the quality of the pie was farcical. It had terrible soggy crust and about 3 pieces of meat. The chips did not taste fresh whatsoever either. The roasted vegetables that came with this were inedible - they seemed as if they had been boiled then placed in the oven for 5 minutes. My mum ordered the ribeye steak and was given a what seemed like a low quality rump. As someone who has been cooking steaks for years she knows her stuff. Again the price for the quality was absolutely farcical. When asking the server about this he talked to her in an extremely condescending manner, saying ‘we don’t use rump steaks, I can get the packaging if you’d like’ only to never come back out with the packaging. The rest of the food we had was average at best. I wouldn’t say its far above wetherspoons quality. Moving onto to the service we received, I must say it was quite bad. There was half an hours wait between being served the starters and main courses. The woman serving our food seemed miserable and uninterested and not once were we asked if our food was okay. There was no broccoli in stock for the pies, and when we pointed this out the only compensation we got was one bowl of rancid microwaved peas between 2 people. As I said at the start of the review, I have never felt less satisfied with how I spent mu money. I will never be returning here and urge everyone to avoid this place.

There was also no stuffing or crackling, again noone said. He also then asked for apple sauce and was brought horse radish. I asked for bbq sauce for my meal and none ever arrived. For the price really disappointing. Great I could bring my dogs but terrible food and service overall - were hoping to use this as our local but won’t now. Puddings came out steaming hot, so hot it burnt your mouth, they were definitely microwaved. Staff were very friendly and it was a nice atmosphere. But in the future ill just go for drinks and not food. Also don't bother buying the cheesy garlic bread! It was basically cheese on toast with garlic butter, £4.50 for cheese on toast, is that some sort of joke?! We all had a good laugh about that. Honestly it was just toasted bread with a tiny bit of cheese on it, that wasn't melted (microwaved probably)

Visit tonight and booked a table for 4. First impressions were that of more dogs than customers, but putting that to one side we were pointed to our table and made our way there by ourselves. Seated and looked at the menu and made a decision on the kids menu for my boys (11 and 8) and choose the garlic cheesy bread for starter, Beef burger, chips and beans. Chicken goujons, mini corn and chips. Mains were 3 cheese and mushrooms on bruschetta, Montgomery Jack Burger with Bacon and slow cooked ribs, including drinks that came to over £80. The place was not busy and from what I saw front of house staff were 5+ and not including kitchen staff. Waited 30 mins for starters and when they came out.. wow Kids starter was a slice of bread with cheese and garlic butter on, Adults starter was again bread.. NOT Bruschetta and a single mushroom on each square and over powered garlic cheese, on all fronts not worth the £20 for 4 slices of bread, cheese and garlic. Mains took another 25 mins after this and again was hoping for something better but disappointed to say not even close. Kids burger bun was rock hard and not edible. Mini corn was just 1 medium piece of normal corn and not cooked well and dry. Adult burger was bland and nothing special and NOT worth £17. The slow cooked rib came out cold and with a layer of grease on top. When I mentioned it was cold to the staff, who not once came over and asked if everything was ok took the meal back to the kitchen to re-heat it.......... I mean to openly say it was going to be reheated and not replace.. POOR. When the staff member came back he admitted it was bad and apologised but the damage was done, we never waited for the kids dessert we went to MacDonald's instead. I will not or ever be recommending The Oak at Baginton and will be leaving as many reviews were I can to reflect this.

Luckily we all managed to find something else off the selective menu. Food came, two were slightly wrong, older lady pulled the young girl that served us to the side (you don’t do that in front of customers) Tables were squished together so had to pull the tables out to make more room for everyone. Food was actually quite nice and fresh. Had hunters chicken.. never had the chicken in a bowl of cheesy sauce before, that was new. Personally we eat out quite abit so prices vary from place to place and don’t think they were worth £15 + each meal. Ordered Pepsi / coke which was flat. *disabled toilet / baby change was by the back open door so was really cold inside which wasn’t ideal, poor lighting, no nappy change bin and quite dated.

What was one a fantastic village pub, the meals were great and deals were perfect. Since Stonegate and it’s original manager took over its lost many of its regulars and most of its atmosphere, today on hoping for it to become my regular again, it was ruined by many children running around whose parents cared very little about that or the noise they were making, I get kids will be kids, however parents need to have some control. It wasn’t a very relaxing visit to catch up with friends. Such a shame as the new Management seem nice enough. It may be family friendly but it’s definitely not feeling villager friendly anymore, it will take something amazing for it to be anywhere or anything like it used to be. Stonegate seem to be trying to make it anything but a nice village pub.

Nice, cosy venue. Staff were accommodating and attentive. The only thing that let it down was the food was a bit cold when it was brought out.

Overall very poor, food was uncooked, stale and what looked to be microwaved. Had a three course meal and did not finish any of the courses. And I can only describe the first course as kfc chicken with mayo squirted on them. After stopping the night in a room where the plugs and the shower door were both broken this being the second room I was put in after the first had not been cleaned. I then dared to have breakfast there the next morning and I was not disappointed. A breakfast where only anything out of a tin or a shell was edible. The service was on par with the food. Overall very disappointing and won’t be coming back.

I went there with my partner for a meal from their festive menu. I ordered a turkey and gammon pie with roast potatoes Brussels carrots parsnips and broccoli. My partner had fish and chips. My pie was so hard I couldn't cut the pastry had to open the bottom to get the filling out. The Brussels and broccoli were like rubber the parsnips and carrots were jet black not just burnt, cremated. No roast potatoes they were deep fried. The worst meal I've bought in years. My partner didn't like her fish so both meals were left. Our complaints fell on deaf ears I strongly advise others to eat elsewhere

Very nice pub/restaurant. Lovely team of people to look after you. The place has a warm inviting feel to it and you feel that as soon as you go through the front door. The accommodation is good although a little "unwell" the bathroom sealant isn't sticking anymore. The shower cubicle wasn't sealed very well. Holes in the walls and looked tired. However, the bed was very comfortable and clean. The selection of food from the menu is very nice and plenty of choice. The hunters chicken in my opinion is very, very nice! The only let down was the breakfast. The full English had sausages that were mystery bags and extremely cheap. The bacon was fried to its death and the scrambled egg was a watery as a pond. Over all, I would recommend "The Oak" as a place to stay, with a warm friendly welcome and a tasty evening meal. There was one particular gentleman from behind the bar that was extremely helpful with our drinks as they didn't have what we ordered but he came up with an alternative that was wonderful. Plenty of parking in a quiet village. Definitely recommend this place! 👏👏👏

Huge portions at decent prices. Staff are excellent and the food is tasty. Take your own drinks as well. That helps to keep the cost down.

Took over 40 mins to get a burger even when it was quiet and my burger came burnt to a crisp. I asked for a replacement and all it tasted of was oil no flavour at all. My chips were stone cold and very small portions for the price I would not recommend this place to anyone

Ordered takeaway collection, for 8:10. Massive delays, no real communication. Lots of other people waiting also. Finally got my food at close to 9pm ... Really disappointing experience. Food was nice as always, but will take some some to build trust up again to use them.
