Room looks magnificent, bed comfortable. But there's no water in the bathroom, hot or cold, there's no answer on the telephone when you call to ask them to sort it out, and there's no response to email. So disappointed that I can hardly begin to put it into words. No idea where I can go for a shower before attending a funeral this afternoon.

Somewhat of a strange experience. It's less hotel, more Air b&b. It's an unmanned former hotel where you collect keys from an external key box and then let yourself come and go without seeing any staff. Fine for me, but this may not suit everyone. Excellent location for the centre of town, good sized, well appointed rooms and a reasonable amount of on site free parking.

There's nothing bad that can be said about the Northgate. Rooms are splendid, luxurious, and everything worked as it ought to, and was spotlessly clean. It's a shame the hotel no longer has its restaurant and bar and staff and reception and all the things that gave the place its terrific reputation in Bury St Edmunds, but alas they are gone. The hotel itself may soon disappear. It is for sale, and the very friendly cleaning lady told us that most of the potential buyers want to convert it to residential. That would be a shame, so stay there whilst you can!

Unmanned beautiful Victorian Hotel in the heart of Bury St.Edmunds. SUCH A SHAME! This was the best boutique hotel in town. No staff to welcome you, no reception, no bar, no restaurant. You get your keys from a lockbox outside the door, code provided the night before via text. As soon as you arrive you can see the sign “ FOR SALE “, parking provided at the back of the Hotel. The room ( I got The Harriet ) still super comfortable, cozy and warm and cleaned. No breakfast BUT kettle & coffee machine provided in the room. Price: 86£ for the night, super cheap considering the time ( 21st December, triple that anywhere else in town ) I really really really hope this wonderful place will go back to its splendour 🧡.

Awful! Do not stay here. This building is soulless and filthy. After booking you are told there is no member of staff on site. We followed the instructions on how to pick up key etc to find our room hadn’t been made up from previous person. Upon ringing the contact number were told the hotel was full and they were trying to contact the housekeeping team. Too be fair the gentleman was very polite. Miraculously 10 mins later the hotel wasn’t full and they gave us another room. Shower was cold rang again and nothing they could do until the morning. Filthy as you will see from photos. Basically a very unloved building that has no care put into it. Bathroom had two tiny lights that made it too dark to see safely at night, non frosted glass overlooking neighbouring property so couldn’t have blinds open. Housekeeping needs improving, carpets filthy, no attention put into anything in room. This out of commission hotel is just being used as a money maker with minimum input and care. Complete joke of a property.

This is an out of commission Hotel. More like an Air b and b. Decor in communal parts is tired. Very little explanation of how things worked in the room. Underfloor heating in bathroom was set at 39degrees on the hottest day of the year. No air con. Fire doors propped open all night even though it’s clearly stated they should be kept shut. External door open all night means lack of security and safety. No staff on site at all. Woke up in the morning to see staff removing bar equipment. Oh also Hotel is up for sale. So not really a boutique hotel as advertised.

What a fabulous dining experience! To celebrate a ‘significant’ Birthday for my wife, I opted for the chefs table at The Northgate - what a wise choice this turned out to be. Greg and his team delivered a faultless selection of courses, just when you thought each individual plate could not get any better…it did, and all delivered in such a calm controlled manner. This was all backed-up by great service from the rest of the team. A heartfelt thank you to you all for making my wife’s Birthday so memorable.

Have not eaten here for a year or so and was so disappointed on my return. There is nowhere near the 'buzz' around the place that there once was. However the main issue seems to be the entire staff all seem to be kids/ students and frankly don't seem to know what they're doing, both in the bar and the restaurant. The food itself was pretty good, albeit a limited menu choice. The staff let the place down and something needs to change if its to get that buzz back. Hope they do as the place was always a great evening out.

So pub 3 . Overall an excellent experience. Service was great from the start and maintained throughout. Our lovely waitress kept the meal flowing without feeling rushed. No long waits . The food was wonderful . The starters were lovely and fresh for a hot summers day and everything served on warm plates. Main course was the roast and they easily passed our regular test of requesting more gravy. The star however were definitely the roast potatoes so hot and crisp we all thought the best we had ever eaten out at a restaurant. Perfect amount of delicious veg. Only mention would again be the pork ( wee are yet to find the perfect roast pork!) it was pork belly so understandably fatty but still very little. We would therefore recommend the beef . A delicious dessert finished the meal off nicely. We will go back to this one so for now the leader board is 1. Northgate 2. Packhorse 3. 3 blackbirds Heading to Saffron Walden next !

We had booked to go to the northgate for a small wedding lunch after we got married at the registry office, there was a group of around 25 of us and we went in to book the table and discuss options. We booked in the table and were then told to email the manager for menu options and further details, we emailed on the 27th of June, I waited a week before calling and following up, they are shut Monday and Tuesday so called on Wednesday and spoke to the manager, was promised an email back that day and nothing. Waited another week and still no communication after another follow up call. Ended up taking our business elsewhere, chesnut group must be doing exceptionally well if that do not actively want to accept business. Very disappointed, would not reccommend.

We were not pleased with a roast beef Sunday dinner. There was three very thin slices of tough beef and a super large Yorkshire pudding. Roast potatoes were so hard, they actually hurt to chew. They also were a chore to cut. Very little gravy, and no offer of more. Condamints were not on table and not offered. The bottle containing water was soiled around the neck. The price was not offering good value. The room was cold and lacked atmosphere. We will not return

If you are looking for a nice place for afternoon tea this is not the place for you . Whilst the hotel is really nicely decorated and the food ok afternoon tea it is not ! When we arrived it seemed that they really didn’t know where to put us , so left us in the bar with a cocktail menu until our table was ready . We went through to the restaurant and was given four rather large sandwiches and told they would get the tea later . After about 10 minutes we asked to move back to the bar because the restaurant was so noisy ( not their fault ) We then received our scone , which were lovely but still no tea . Strange kind of afternoon tea with no tea . We then had three kind of desserts all really nice but not cakes ! It just wasn’t an afternoon tea as I know it ,it was more like three women just having different dishes all afternoon . I want to say the service was poor and it was but wouldn’t want to get the young man who did serve us in a warm and professional manner in trouble . Take note he is the only reason I don’t really go to town about how uncomfortable we felt for a lot of the time . If you don’t want to offer afternoon tea then don’t but if you do please make the effort to see how it should be done .Harriets is a good example

Wow! Booked this as a birthday treat for my husband as we love The Northgate. The kitchen experience events are for up to 6 people, we knew it would be good however it exceeded our expectations. Greig, the head chef, was informative, fun & a great teacher. Still aware of what’s happening in his kitchen with his team even though he is cooking with participants. The food was terrific - prepping mackerel, lobster (there’s a story), chicken, suckling pig & meringues. Also Interacting with the pastry chef (Scott) who was prepping close by, getting to taste his handiwork too. Greig has a fantastic team who enjoy what they do & this comes across in the atmosphere in the kitchen. I can not recommend this experience enough. Everything about the place was a joy, friendly helpful staff, delicious food from a very varied menu and a most welcoming ambience - my only reservation being that the waiter told us the dining room is having a refurb shortly, I hope that they don't make it too "on trend" and contemporary as it may lose its delightful atmosphere - we will wait and see and will definitely return later this summer, we are also looking forward to seeing their Christmas Day menu too.

This means you are seated within the kitchen area of the restaurant so you can see all the action, as well as the attention to detail and professionalism of the chefs. We had the “Taste of East Anglia” set menu (£45pp) which comprises five small courses plus bread and canapes. This was without a doubt one of the best meals either of us have ever eaten! The lamb was exquisite and cooked to absolute perfection. The goats curd dessert was also a surprising favourite. Delicious! Head chef Greg served us each course personally and he was a delight. He then created 4 cocktails that were not on the menu without any fuss...lovely atmosphere and would definitely go again.

We know the head chef Greig Young and having previously eaten his food, we booked the Northgate without hesitation.

The Northgate was recommended to us. We chose the chefs table in the kitchen and had the 'Taste of Suffolk' menu with matched wines. It was a fairly quiet night, which perhaps made for a slight lack of atmosphere, but on the other hand, it allowed the staff to be very attentive. One or two of the courses were slightly challenging, but we enjoyed everything we had and the wines matched up well. We will be happy to go back if we get a chance.

10 of us came here for Sunday lunch to celebrate my 40th birthday. We had 4 children in the party and were all well catered for! I had visited once before and wasn't overly impressed but am really pleased we gave it another go! Food and service was brilliant and big thanks to Harry who looked after us so well.

We came here for drinks, and did not eat. I can only speak as I find. Very well thought out use of space, and a well designed and comfortable room in which to drink.

2nd visit here, again for Sunday lunch with a large group (12 people) had heard a few poor comments on the quality and service over the last few months however, we all enjoyed the Sunday Lunch, service was good and they were very helpful when deciding what to choose. Had pre-lunch drinks in the bar which is very pleasant before moving through to the dinning area. Enjoyed the meal!!

I moved up to BSE from Brighton and the Northgate has a different style from other BSE establishments. It's hard for me to describe how, so all I can say is it feels like Brighton to me. I hope that's a good thing, I love Brighton, so for me, it most certainly is. Great place to eat and drink.

Mixed feelings about this place - have been twice for pre-dinner drinks, first time found it very pleasant, nice decor, good bar drinks choice, knowledgable and friendly staff, relaxing, sophisticated vibe. Then went last night on a rare baby-sitter relieved dinner outing with the missus. Drink before dinner last night £29 for two drinks (a large G & T and a glass of middle-ranking but tasty Marlborough Sav Blanc)! £29! I thought had been mixed up with another order or that I was back in Sweden but no, this was the price. We don't get out much but even in my wildest West-End excesses Ive failed to blow the best part of £30 on two drinks. No wonder no one else was enjoying a pre-dinner drink on a Friday night and the very nice bar area and well lit patio area. By comparison a beautiful three course meal, coffees, bottle of delightful Alentejo red at the 'One Bull' was £86 (again I needed to check the bill but for the opposite reason, I couldn't believe was such good value for what is always good food and atmosphere). Its a shame because I think the presentation and vibe at the Northgate is extremely nice; maybe this is a deliberate strategy to imbue some sort of 'exclusivity' (which is always a mistake - BSE has some great evening spots and places that triumph price over substance don't fare well against such choice of established heavy-hitters) but really, £29 for two drinks is nothing short of obnoxious pricing. Wont be back in a hurry and it would put me off trying the restaurant. Again must emphasise review is for bar drinks only, we did not eat and reviews for restaurant seem generally very good. Maybe it was a cock-up that I was too shocked, and in a hurry for our dinner reservation to probe too much but thats a crazy price for a gin and a glass of wine.

The test of management is when things go wrong. The did, badly, on our fist visit. But I reported this, and credit to Simon, manager of the Chestnut Group, he stepped in, invited us back and we had a great lunch. Fixed price 2/3 course menu. Carrot soup was delicious, creamy and flavoursome. My sea bass fillet was one of the best I have had. I regularly choose this as it’s a light lunch. Good service, great food. Lovely refurbished patio, with great art. I hope they do well. I went back with another friend the next day. No slips. Slightly inexperienced staff, but everyone has to learn and nothing of consequence went wrong. Well done Michael, Simon. Keep up the improvements. I recommend the Northgate. Good coffee, too, which is frankly rare!

We arrived at our booked time, 7.30pm, and were asked if we would like a drink in the bar before dinner. This in itself was odd as the staff usually want you at your table at the booked time. Our starters were slow coming out and when finished we had nearly an hours wait for our main courses. The excuse given was a shortage of kitchen staff. Three of our meals were ok but my wife’s fish dish was to say the least bland and at worst tasteless. I am not sure if we will use this restaurant again. Very disappointing!!!!

Six of us had an amazing lunch here on one of the hottest days of the year. We were on the terrace in the shade and it couldn't have been better. We had the Taste of East Anglia lunchtime tasting menu. Service was exemplary with good explanations of each dish and what was special about it. Each dish was beautifully presented, and we had a couple of sharing elements (like T-bone halibut), which made it more informal and sociable - perfect for foodie friends. Some of the simplest things were special (I will give courgettes more respect now). Everyone in our party enjoyed every element of this well thought out lunch menu. Amazing food, talented chef.

Went to the Northgate for my husbands birthday. I’d eaten here twice before and always been pleased and had cocktails with friends and been very impressed as they had a wow factor when they arrived. Unfortunately not this time. The cocktail menu has been downsized to a dozen classics. No candy floss martini anymore. They were accommodating when asked if they could do a pornstar martini however, when it arrived it was lacking in passion fruit flavour and didn’t really do it for me. We looked at the menu which out of 6 starters 5 were vegetarian. The menu generally seemed a little uninspiring so out of 4 of us 3 had a steak. We had booked for 8pm and checked in at the desk when we arrived but didn’t look like we were going to be called through anytime soon and we had finished our cocktails and were sitting with empty glasses. We decided to move things along and went through to the dining room anyway. We ordered some wine but the Albariño and the Malbec rose which they did by the glass weren’t great. We ended up going for a bottle of Provence rose as we felt you couldn’t go wrong with that and felt like the cheaper options had not filled us with confidence. My marinated vegetables with baron bigod cheese had neither tasted of any marinade or cheese. When the three steaks arrived they all looked lost on the plate and just had mushrooms plonked on top. Only 2 bowls of fat chips had come out for 3 people and one jug of peppercorn sauce both of which we asked for more. My husband left a lot of gristle on his plate and said it certainly wasn’t a £27 steak. We didn’t bother staying for dessert as the dining room was so warm no fan or air conditioning and the service had been so slow we didn’t have long until our taxi arrived! Such a shame as lovely surroundings but to compete with the price range of maison bleue the Northgate really don’t offer any competition. Will not be rushing back anytime soon!

Our 1st time visit to The Northgate booked for an afternoon birthday tea for all three of us (sisters) not good at all! We opted to have our tea on the terrace lovely setting. Very hot day, admittedly, waitress brought our 3 teas to table with cafitier followed by tray of sandwiches, scones, cream and jam, lemon meringue, raspberry eclairs and made lines all at the same time! !! So whilst eating said sandwiches (which were getting dried up rather quickly ) the remainder of the food was getting warmer and melting before our eyes....not good. Waitress came and asked if everything was ok and if wanted more tea! We told here our unhappiness about said food but with no response. We decided we wouldn't complain yet but unfortunately could only eat some of sandwiches, lemon m eringues but were almost melted and very messy, the made lines we had to dip in our tea to soften up as so hard! Not great or worth £18 EACH as to what we were charged when handed the bill. My sister did complain before the bill was given to us but no one was at all interested. The staff in my opinion do not appear to have much idea about customer service. We were the only table eating this afternoon as well so not at all busy. Very inexperienced staff I feel also. All in all not a good birthday treat for the three of us. Wouldn't recommend.

We sat in the shade on the terrace and enjoyed the four course Suffolk lunch, which features foods from various Suffolk towns. Each course had some aspect that impressed. The Fakenham flour bread was a bit tough, but the tiny tartlet of cheese and vegetable with it was lovely. I thought the lamb and roasted cauliflower, each cooked two ways, was a great success. I found the idea of a sorrel ice cream tremendously interesting, and it was certainly very beautiful, but it had no tartness and I'm really not sure how that's possible, nor would I serve it with cucumber. The last dish, a slightly cinnamon-y strawberry ice with fresh strawberries and a shard of meringue was again inspired, So where does that leave me? The garden is lovely, the food is very well presented, but at least on the day we were there, it was a little uneven. Very good, and showing some creativity, but I'll have to try it again to make up my mind.

The Northgate was our venue for an intimate wedding meal for 38 guests. We were delighted with the customer service from start to finish. Michael and Genevieve were very accommodating to our needs and produced a bespoke wedding menu to suit our needs. Nothing was too much, from placing our handmade place names and flowers on tables, setting up a signing frame and easle, photo taking and serving a further 30-40 guests in the evening.

Was really looking forward to eating here, but sadly feel really let down, firstly no bottled water just filtered, started with free bread with pea hummus, just tasted of hummus to me. We ordered scallop for starter, only the one and cooked in shell so had to prise off shell to eat, great at £20 each, then mail, my wife chose the ham which was just sliced gristle and 1/4 of a pepper, I had tagine which had 4 pieces of meat and portion of rice which arrive from Lilliput! My wife’s food was so bad she could not cut into it and just left it, we shared what we could of the tagine and had to leave, we had had enough, due to the fact my wife had to rerun the food she could not eat, we only got charged 1/2 price, so after refusing the 12.5% service charge we only had to pay £95 for the privilege. Really think you can do better, happy to accept refund as to be honest I was expecting beadle to pop out!
