Disappointing meal - very restrained menu, no desserts and sadly uninspiring. Staff were friendly and helpful but a difficult job with so little to offer. As they are advertising for staff I can only assume the Kitchen Staff have changed. A real shame as it looked worth a visit on Trip Advisor. Won’t be going again.

I booked my husbands birthday meal. We were 13 in total. I arranged it all with Hazel. The food was great, the service was quick & efficient and the staff including Hazel were friendly & welcoming. The atmosphere was relaxed and although we were in a side room we still had the buzz of the pub going on in the background. This is a lovely old pub with real pub vibe. I would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting great food in a unique setting.

This is a great spot for having a great plate of food and sharing a pint with a friend in the garden. Seasonal food cooked with love and care. My friend had the steak, great cut and value for money. The wild garlic butter was amazing. It went so well with the steak. I had the fish and chips. Crunchy, tasty batter. The fish was divine. The texture and taste were amazing. We had the chocolate brownie for dessert. Again, a well executed dish. The service was excellent. The team working behind the bar is young and friendly. Well done to the team. We will come back definitely.

Amazing pub in the heart of the village. We had the Calcot farm sausages, mash, caramelised onion gravy, kale, Sirloin steak, charred purple sprouting caesar, chunky chips, wild garlic butter, and the Sussex charmer and roasted vegetable crumble, buttered greens, crispy ratte potatoes. Needless to say the plates went back to the kitchen licked clean. Great desserts and beers on tap. The quality of the food was superb, and the service too. We booked a table in The Snug, a room at the back of the bar, traditionally decorated and fabulously cosy. Would definitely recommend.

We visited here as a family party of seven across three generations and were given a room to ourselves which worked well. There was a wide range of choices on the main menu which kept adults and children happy. My wife and I chose from the three-course Menu of the Day which had a small choice of dishes from the full menu at a useful discount. All three dishes were delicious and well received by both of us. Staff were friendly and efficient and we all left satisfied with our visit and would be happy to return.

Thought we'd road test the new chef and menu last weekend. My wife's hake was beautiful, our son thought it was his birthday, with the size of the piece of gammon he was presented with. This is a pub that would certainly have been in the main guide of the Good Pub guide if that was still in publication. Its set in a lovely town which has the feel and look more of a village. Delicious lunch in a traditional village pub. Beautifully presented tasty food. I had deep fried mac and cheese bites with bacon mayo (yum), hake in beer batter with huge crunchy chips (I would have preferred the fish with the skin taken off but that's just personal preference), and my favourite bit was the rice pudding brulee with blackberry compote - the best dessert I've had for ages. We had a bottle of french rosé wine which was really good too.

I’ve now visited The New Inn 3 times in the past few months - twice for an incredible roast and today for lunch. The roast is hands down the best roast I’ve had in a restaurant! Really good portion sizes - We were so impressed with the variety of veg/sides - the potatoes were so crispy and yummy! We also got roast chicken nuggets (you HAVE to try them!!) and the cauliflower cheese was also amazing! For lunch I had fish and chips and mac and cheese bites with bacon Mayo to start - wow the mac and cheese bites were unreal! I’ve never tried anything like that before, but I will definitely be coming back for more! Would highly recommend a visit - really relaxed atmosphere, cosy and family friendly! I’ve taken my baby every time and the staff have always been very accommodating and helpful. Dog friendly too!

What a lovely welcoming pub. The chef had changed recently and we wanted to try it. The food was amazing! I had fish and chips - the fish (as all ingredients I was told) was bought that day and was beautifully white and soft. Best triple cooked chips ever! My grown up daughter had the salmon with a crab croquette - which we all tried and agreed this was the star of the show - and my husband who had eaten earlier in the day had the charcuterie board - which was filled to the brim! I had the chocolate marquis with cream for pudding which was excellent and my daughter and husband had cheese and biscuits - which wasn’t on the menu but the waitress managed to rustle up for us. Chatted to some lovely people whilst there and overall a good night 😊

My business colleague and I had a decent lunch here and it is a nice place. Everything was fine and the staff were attentive until two unexpected things happened at the end of our meal - so that's 1* docked for each thing! The pub was pretty much empty and we had unfinished drinks BUT the waiter came up and said to us 'Do you want anything else or shall I get your bill NOW?!' - rather 'pushy' but no big deal (maybe) UNTIL within 5 minutes the waitress came up and said 'Will you pay now'! So I paid in cash but we were still drinking when the waiter came back with £2.40 in change and said 'Do you want this (change)?'! Well considering a 10% service charge had already been included in the bill which I had paid (£3.40) for not a lot of service really I was shocked, and just said 'Yes'! In summary, a nice place and decent food BUT shame about the waiting staff!!

Lovely pub and friendly staff, but food v disappointing, My steak was meant to be medium rare, came out well done and the ‘béarnaise’ sauce was served in a gravy jug and had the consistency of water. Not someone who would complain normally and I felt bad as our waiter had been great. Sent back and politely asked for thicker sauce and it came back the same. Would recommend changing chefs. I/we were left very disappointed with the food we ordered. When ordering I specifically told the waitress how I wanted my food cooked. As we were both having the same thing and when it arrived we could not tell which one was which, the waitress delivering the food did not know either! I asked to speak to the waitress that had taken my order and asked which was which. She said they were both the same as she had not put my request in with the order!!! I was gobsmacked. As I was there with my friend and we have not seen each other in ages I did not want to tarnish the evening by complaining so ate what I deemed was a horrible and expensive meal as it was not how I wanted it at all. It was dry and tasteless for me!!! Service left a lot to be desired as all of a sudden our table was emptied of everything and it was our cue to leave. All very blunt and abrupt. We will not be going back to this establishment again. This was the second time I have eaten there, the first was just as bad as we were sat in a room with people who swore all night long, so based on these two experiences I would much prefer to spend my hard earned money elsewhere.

Quirky pub with no car park and too busy to park on street. We had to park a good way away. Food disappointing- my chargrilled vegetables consisted of over cooked aubergine and raw courgette, no colour or flavour. Desserts uninspiring. We went to the New Inn for Sunday lunch. We had great expectations but were sadly disappointed. The food wasn’t very hot. My sister and mum ordered the lamb and couldn’t eat it. It had apparently been sous vide and usually this means that the meat is very tender but they couldn’t cut into it. The roast potatoes weren’t crispy and all in all the food was very much below what we expected. We did mention the fact that the meat was tough and the food not that hot and our waitress said that she would mention it to the chef. Nothing else was said to us. As I said at the beginning very dissatisfied and wouldn’t go there again.

Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. Good service. Wine list needs some improvement in the reds, and although the main courses are always good, the puddings could be better. Eg last night Treacle tart was not very moist, rather dry and over cooked, and more clotted cream/ice cream would have been nice as there was barely enough. Always enjoy our time there, but a few improvements would make it even better.

Positives: - Nice rustic decor and atmosphere - Staff friendly and helpful - Food came out in good time - Starter, salmon roulade, was a nice change to usual pub starters and was nice. - Yorkshire pudding seemed freshly cooked and was pleasant, when they often seem like they were cooked yesterday at pubs. - Child friendly, with a wide selection of games and puzzles you can borrow plus a small outside playground. Negatives: - Main course, the roast was just luke warm, shame as flavours and variety of veg was nice. - Sticky toffee pudding was also luke warm, and had lots of strands of what looked like ginger root at the bottom, like it was not chopped properly, this, plus the fact it was luke warm effected the texture of the cake, slightly dry. Toffee sauce was nice.

Extremely disappointing lunch. The only warm part was the gravy and cauliflower cheese, my beef was too rare and cold and the vegetables were lukewarm, the roast potatoes were cold, solid and not at all crispy. My partner's chicken was overcooked and dry, her vegetables the same as mine, lukewarm! Unfortunately, the table next to ours, expressed exactly the same comments as we did. The price of 1 meal was deducted from our bill, though we felt that was begrudgingly done, and we still feel we overpaid.

For old world charm this is great being one of the oldest buildings on the High Street. A very historic pub with its original character left intact rather than ripped out as so many do. A warm welcome here this Mon evening, in fact all the staff were fantastic in this characterful Inn. Chili beef enchilada and the chili beef nachos were excellent. Sauvignon blanc was good, Heineken was good but didn't hold a head. Mississippi mud pie was disappointing, the top layer was inedible and the portion small, especially considering the £8 price tag. Upon settling the bill, which I did not study, I left my usual tip, when warranted, but this was given back as a service charge had already been applied at 10%. This pub has been saved by the community who run it so was not sure what to expect but I have popped in for a pint and a bite to eat on several occasions after local country walks. On each visit I have eaten here the food has been first class and well priced, much better than many so called gastropubs. Service has always been friendly and efficient, I would thoroughly recommend a visit if you are passing . It is also dog friendly as a proper pub should be. Will be back

This has been a true "local pub". However, at the end of September 2023, the business ownership changed hands. This is confirmed by other recent reviews and a closing notice on an "A board" outside the pub. At the time of writing, Google has been requested to flag the pub as "Temporarily Closed". We look forward to visiting when it reopens, and hope the new owner retains the atmosphere - just to confirm, it remains closed at the end of February 2024.
