The New Garden Grove in Edinburgh, City of

Decided to pop in here from working late in Edinburgh for a simple chicken curry fried rice. The chicken, rice and curry sauce all had barely any taste to it which was the first thing I had noticed, this was followed by the chicken having a very weird soft texture to it which was easier than normal to bite through for chicken, was told this could possibly be due to the way they boil the chicken at first so not thinking much of it I continued eating. Even in my very hungry state I couldn’t manage to finish the food. I then spent the next 4 days in bed, unable to eat or stay stood up longer than 5 minutes without being on the verge of passing out or vomiting. I am just now feeling slightly better after 4 days of constant diarrhoea and vomiting. I have been unable to go to work the past 2 days and will no doubt have to take tomorrow off as well as I still don’t think I’ll be fit enough to carry out physical labour. Can’t fault the service at all as we received our food relatively quick and the server was polite and helpful. Unsure if this was just a dodgy batch of chicken but after doing some research, all my symptoms line up perfectly with salmonella food poisoning. Eat at your own risk

This is a really good takeout place at rock bottom prices. The food is quite tasty and the portions are large. Orders are prepared very quickly. I especially like the vegetarian hot and sour soup. It was a real treat at any price. I will go back

I have used the New Garden Grove for years now - always a great service from the owners and the food is always delicious. Can't recommend the place enough! I still regularly visit for a takeaway despite moving from the area.

No wonder my carryout only took 15 minutes! Duck in plum sauce....duck lookwarm and sauce had dried up. Spare ribs cold and dry that sauce was dried up too. Special rice ,cold and smelt stale I had to throw it all away , hope I'm not ill after eating what I did have.

Good food great service better price

Used to visit here frequently while living in Pollock Halls but also working part-time circa 2012 and missing the provided dinners. Always great craic with the owner who went above and beyond. Circumstances changed and I ended up being able to make dinner times, moved out for 2nd year, went back a couple years later as an RA. Stepped back in after those years and immediately greeted as if it was just the next day I was scheduled to visit. Went periodically over 2015-2018 and it was still always good. Miss the place and hope it’s still doing well.

loved the duck with plum sauce - very reasonably priced too! used the duck to make quick tacos at home which turned out great! Don't recommend their chicken maryland though (but who orders that at a Chinese place anyway?! lol. hubby wanted to show me this "dish") Order for collection took 20 minutes

Late night takeaway...not bad at all..

Fresh, Fast, friendly and tasty! Got a noodle box, which he made the sauce up to the strength I wanted. He seems freshly prepared. Loads of meat and veg. First class

I always go to them to get Takeaways. They are Husband & wife team. And can adjust the takeaways to suit. The only one thing I think they could make the black Bean gravey a bit stronger! But still yummy

Excellent & welcoming Chinese takeaway. Food always fresh & flavoursome. Our go to place even though there are many closer to home. Long established for good reason.

This used to be my local in Edinburgh, so close to my flat I could crawl there if I needed to! It's been a few years but I've compared every Chinese takeaway I've had to this place and every one has been lesser! I've yet to taste a single place that makes a better plum duck! I can't even find one that's close. I fully intend on reliving my student days by visiting here next time I'm in Edinburgh!

I Was disappointed in the portions not much meal in my curry so I won’t be going back there and it’s cold when you receive your meal

This has been our favourite local family takeaway for many years ! Can highly recommend the food and the staff are super helpful and friendly....... if you like a perfect chicken curry , then look no further ! Try it !

My fav casual weekend Chinese. The best is their chicken wings in chilli honey sauce. Haven't had any better in other Chinese restaurants.

Tasteless food soaked in oil on 2 occasions. Banana fritters very doughy and old banana such as it was. Nice service.

I ordered the deep fried wun tun appetizer (comes w/ sauce), orange chicken and fried rice. The price was fairly reasonable. The best part were the wun tuns which were very flavorful and yummy. The orange chicken was interesting, the chicken was good but the way they prepare it makes it almost slimy and after awhile I couldn't keep eating it. The fried rice was alright, just average fried rice but there was a lot of it. Will go back to try more things on the menu.

Great food with quick service and reasonable prices

I treated my friend to chilli and honey spare ribs and side order of egg fried rice. His verdict- delicious, tender meaty ribs, well made, lovely flavour and generous portion. Many thanks.

Barely edible, overpriced food. Worst lemon chicken in my life so far. But ok spring rolls

Returned here after 15 years as it used to be the place to get an alternative to the food in halls. Not as good as the University days and the food lacked depth of flavour

Only a one star as that's the lowest I can give, Genuinely the worst Chinese I have ever had, nothing wrong with the service but the food was horrific. Made the mistake of trying this place because I was driving past and my usual Chinese is closed on a Tuesday, I think I will wait next time. I feel sorry for the students at Pollock halls, all I will say is stick to pasta if you can. BBQ Spare Ribs, the worst ribs I have ever tried, no flavour and distinct lack of pork. Boiled Rice, if you're kids need a bouncy ball around the house and the shops are shut just order the boiled rice. Salt & Pepper chips, I have never had chips that are so raw, the "salt & Pepper" side of things was a bunch of veg which tasted like it had been sitting in an old casserole dish for one week on a low heat, dry and soft and no flavour at all. The curry sauce, even I can make curry sauce, so how hard can it be, well if you like the taste of curry sauce you may as well try somewhere else because this curry sauce had literally no flavour. Apologies for the lack of photos but sometimes getting something in a bin is a better option than taking a photo. I don't ever leave reviews but I feel this place needs to get it sorted out and without feedback then they may not know the problem.

The worst culinary experience in my life. Period. The food had no taste. It was like plastic. At least, my food expectations became so low with this place, that everything I will eat from now will taste good, even bad food.

Service was fast but not friendly. The selection wasn’t great. And the food was really gross and dry. I got the crispy honey and chili chicken. There was like no sauce and the chicken was dried out. The mini spring rolls had no flavor.

Average and normal Chinese food. Nothing that great, but works

First the owner lady wanted to screw me for my exchange money ( gave her 20£, she returned for a 10£-note, propably because I am not from the area), then I got the food to take-away and unfortunately noticed too late, back in my hotel, that she had "forgotten" the rice. Chicken was not well-cooked, while they added full grown not sliced broccoli and carrots. Not recommended!

I literally come here every other day when I lived in Pollock last year. Good price, very friendly and helpful staff(The lady made me congee (Chinese porridge)when I was sick! ). The chicken wings and crispy wontons are so delicious, as well as the chow mein and cha-cha chicken. I am Chinese so I would say the food is very authentic.

The crispy duck is well worth it. The rest is passable.
