Absolutely lovely place! Very good food, super service from the staff, and friendly atmosphere. We happened to be there on a pub quiz night and had so much fun! Would definitely recommend the place!

Plenty fesh, plenty cheese, fine piece o’ sosig

Friendly service, tasty food.. a little on the expensive side. Bit confused that my Cumberland sausages were basically chip shop sausages but did get 3 so not really complaining.. had to wait ages to pay the bill and would have gotten dessert but ran out of time and had to go up and ask for the bill.

Excellent food. Very busy place.

My partner and I called in for a few drinks. We left earlier than intended due to a young man constantly pestering us to place a food order.

Shocking service, went for a meal with colleagues and my meal was missed, so had to cancel as all my colleagues had finished there's. No apology received no replacement offered as a gesture and generally unprofessional and unhelpful.

We enjoyed an afternoon lunch here and really enjoyed it, highly recommended.

wouldnt recommend the bacalhal com natas. Didn’t taste of much and the consistency was like porridge. The olives for starter was also a bowl of plain olives and some bread so very sub par. Staff were nice but hopefully other food is better value for money as these dishes was not.

The welcome was great, the young man who served us was polite and patience...the food was excellent only problem we had was when we asked for a jacket potato instead of chips was told that was extra...no choice from chips unless you payed....so we payed...very disappointed...then ordered a cappuccino....sorry I could not drink it...didn't taste of coffee or look like coffee.

This is a pub selling pub grub at restaurant prices. Visited here so many times in the past, but they have outpriced themselves. I looked at ordering a side of mushrooms until I saw the price of £5. Unbelievable, it's a pub. We also had to call the waitress after 40 minutes to order our food, even though it wasn't busy

Stopped off on a whim (never been to Merthyr before) and was pleasantly surprised. A Portuguese style eatery adjacent to a sizeable public car park right in the centre of town. Service was a little slow, but in their defense they were quite busy. Enjoyed the soup of the day, filo wrapped prawns to start and piri-piri chicken and goat cheese salad as a main. Well worth a visit if you are ever in the viscinity.

Found this place by accident whilst on a biking trip we will definitely be coming back

Great pub food choices of beer and wine food was lovely home cooked chips corn beef pie peas and gravy really tasty and tidy price we went in the daytime about half full but normally have to book table if you want meal in the evening staff friendly aswel plus a nice covered but outdoor area aswel

Came here for family lunch and had a tin can chair which I couldn’t sit on then looked at menu with shocking prices are they trying to make poor food was mediocre could do better and no pudding what are they thinking.

We visited today as we had heard good reviews. It was a last minute decision and I wasn’t that impressed. The meal was average and although it looked impressive as we ordered the espetadas (Skewered Meat) I felt it lacked flavour. We ordered garlic butter which was margarine and pepper sauce on the side which was gloopy. The chips were lovely but for £21.99 I felt it was all kind of meh. I am very passionate about food and flavour and walked away feeling disappointed. The place was however nicely decorated for a pub in the town. Personally I would not return in a hurry.

I was disappointed in the experience. Took 2 colleagues here for a Friday afternoon meeting after a busy week... should have avoided. Slow service, they forgot our drinks so had to go chasing. Only gave us the full - more expensive - menu. Had to ask for the lighter bites. And chase for the drinks again! Ended hp ordering online, specified no onions on one portion of dirty fries. When the orders came, all fries had onions and the staff argued it wasn't on the order. They offered to remake but at full price! I physically typed it in the order, I can't be responsible for your poor system but we had to escalate to get a£5 dish removed off the bill. In the end they gave 2 cokes (that we have waited and waited for!) free to offset the cost of the fries. Run by kids who don't know what good customer service is. A shame Jorge isn't more present.

Limited beer selection, they didn't have a pale ale or anything local. We were told the local beer was Coors... Mediocre service, a bit slow and lacked knowledge of the menu. Attempted to clear plates and glasses that had just been placed down for food, odd. Good atmosphere to watch a match or grab a casual bite. Food was decent enough

Omg!!!! The staff are amazing. However the food…… We had chicken wings to start, these had the best flavours we have ever tasted. We had the land & sea sharing platter from the Portuguese menu for main, it was simply out of this world. There was so much food but the flavours, it sent our taste buds to heaven. So happy we found this place on visiting Merthyr Tydfil… Hats of to to the chef x

We arrived to a lovely band playing. Highly recommend, food was delicious, especially the Espetada. Very friendly & helpful staff.

Went tonight with 4 people. The hamburger was overcooked although the fries / chips were hot and good. The instruction for the "at table" flaming chorizo assado was incorrect based on the other table instructions and was hardly warm. The accompanying bread was right out of the oven hot. The chicken - Frango com Natos - was overcooked and the sauce was rather bland. We had three bottles of beer - two were so warm that we had to get two glasses of ice and the third was barely cold enough to drink. Servers forgot to check on us so we had to traipse to get more water from the bar, a second trip to get additional ketchup and we could have used more napkins. Just a pretty poor experience for the ratings given. It was a Friday night so perhaps they just had an off night.

Had dinner for the first at the New Crown. I feel I must leave a review as the service was so terrible. From the minute we walk in! We were given a dirty table and had to clean it ourselves. Then after 30mins of waiting we had to ask twice for drinks. Then we waited an other half hour for our food to come. By then we had to ask for another drink. Luckily the food was good! Although we had to ask for salt/pepper as none on our table. Then of course we had to ask for our bill. So overall we spent more time going to the desk asking for drinks/food etc than sitting at our table. It was a poor experience & we will not go back… and as for the atmosphere it was so noisy with a large group of drunk men at the next table that we could not hear ourselves! Real shame as it was not cheap at all.

Cold chips dry chicken piri piri

Terrible service. Never had such bad experience. Given a dirty sticky table. No one came to clean it so we did it ourselves. Had to ask at desk twice for drinks for which we waited 30mins. Had to wait for an hour 30mins for food. Had to ask at desk for more drinks. Then back again at desk to ask for salt/pepper. Shame as food was good although expensive. Then back at desk to ask for the bill! It was ridiculous as we spent more time at the desk than at the table! Atmosphere was poor as our table was next to a large group of drunken men so we could not hear ourselves. We certainly won’t go back!

Waited 45 minutes for our drinks only for the food to turn up before drinks. Food was over cooked and dry. Lovely atmosphere but wouldn’t return.

Went on a Saturday night. Live music, fairly busy with a birthday party on. 4 vegan/vegetarian options, nice to see. Skewer was alright, quite dry. Good size portions. Service was excruciatingly slow though. Took at least 20 minutes to get drinks twice and we nearly bailed on desert due to it taking over 35 minutes from us finishing the mains for the plates to be collected. Maybe on a less busy night service would be quicker but was a little disappointing. Pricing is all over the place too, £20 for the skewer which I thought was pretty steep, but £3 for a rum and coke? Strange!

First time at the new crown. Food was excellent.bit hard to find as not a merthyrite but wellworth the drive.will be back.sorry

Homemade Veg patties + Portugal bread= killer grub. I think my server was still learning and there was some miscommunication with follow-up by me, but it was sorted eventually (American bias).

Nicely decorated and service was friendly and quick Food was nice but felt down by the ‘tempura battered king prawns’ which were the cheap frozen supermarket variety. 4 for £7-8 felt like a rip. The rest of the food appeared made from scratch so unsure why they took this cheat route on that starter

Terrible place ,uncooked food....

The food was spectacular! The wife had the chicken Parmesan. The chicken cooked but not tough and the sauce was beautiful. Mother in law had the chicken and mushroom and was very complementary of the flavours. Nan in law had the salmon and had to take one of the fillets home as she stuffed I had the skewer and I have to say that I couldn’t fault it. Maybe being able to add a sauce would be the only improvement I’d suggest. Good team, really clean pub and great food. That’s all you need really.

We came to The New Crown as a party of 10 and had a great evening. The team were super helpful throughout the booking process, the food and service were perfect and there's a good variety of food on the menu, including Portuguese and vegan options.

Had a great espetada with peri peri. Tender and juicy. Yum

Absolutely first class dining ..Food was hot and delicious..Janin our waitress was so friendly and efficient.. Couldn't do enough to make sure we were happy.. She is expert when it comes to our drinks...Never let us run out and table sevice was brilliant...All in all we will definitely dine again and highly recommend this restaurant.. We eat out alot and are very particular..Forgot to mention I always check for clean toilets...these were spotless..Thank you for making our anniversary meal a lovely experience.

Lovely pub, warm and cosy. Staff really helpful and nice cocktails. Ordered the chicken espatada kebab, tbh it was very dry, it could do with some natural yogurt or some kind of dip/coleslaw to go with it. We were offered packets of Mayonaise but a fresh type of sauce would have been nicer. Overall a nice venue and friendly pub

Today we took a group of young people for a celebration. We wanted them to try lots of new foods and flavours! The food was wonderful, the staff were kind and lovely and explained the menu and all the lovely food dishes! We all can not wait to come back. Highly recommend the prawns and sardines.

Booked food for 15 adults for 19.30 no sign by 20.30 not even any starters even tho there's was only 3 people having them, food finally arrived 20.50 mains arrived before starters. When we finally ate food was quite average nothing exciting, place was chocker block staff run off their feet drink service was very slow they were more interested in getting the drinks out that were ordered on the app rather than serving at the bar. Over £300 not even a discount offered or anything. BIRTHDAY GIRLS EXPERIENCE WAS RUINED her fish an chips weren't even edable!

Good food but a little slow with tge service

Brilliant place to go. Food is Portuguese inspired and really delicious. I especially recommend the hanging kababs. Run by a lovely family, they will look after you.

Excellent place , friendly helpful staff , made me feel at ease straight away, Couldn't fault the beer and the food , best steak I've eaten for a long time ,they listened to how I wanted it cooked and it was cooked perfect. Thankyou I definitely would recommend and visit there again Thankyou

Always a great night at the new crown. It has a very nicely decorated eating area and with plenty of space with seating and bars its a local favourite. Much time and effort has been has been spent to ensure a certain quality throughout the establishment. Staff are very friendly and helpful. It's hard to find better gastro pubs in merthyr. The food is excellent 👌 with some signature dishes and vegan options everyone will be catered for. A definite local or stop to make on a night out. Date night, lads night or quick stop it's a great place to grab a bite and a drink. Not to mention the many music and other functions they cater for.

Went there for a works birthday. Enjoyed it. Ate and drunk well. In fact a few pubs later, couldn't remember a thing. Good night.

Food was cold and tasteless and looked like a school dinner. Small portions for the price and some of the worst food ever eaten. Burger and scampi dishes were dreadful. Very slow service from the kitchen. Front of house team were really good. So disappointing as visited previously and had a good experience. Will not be returning again.

Christmas meal for 16 of my staff, very efficient service and we were well catered for all night. The food and drinks were to a very high standard. Will definitely return.

My poor rating is based on the days that Jorge isn't at the pub. The website to order drinks/food doesn't work. The waitresses don't care about clients, they even ignore them. Last time I was there my friends and I got up from our table and went somewhere else, because nobody cared about us.

Great food, beautiful setting and atmosphere, with a live singer. The only reason I didn't give the food a five was because they gave me mozzarella on my bruschetta rather than feta!!

Been here a couple of times and each time had the orders mixed up, the service and food is great... when you finally get what your ordered.

I had the battered fish with chips. The batter in the fish was awful. It was hard and dark brown in colour.

Great service and very good food . My wife ordered the seafood omlette but they didn't have so switched to seafood salad for no extra charge . Very impressed and would recommend 👍

The food at this place is delightful, and our waitress was exceptional, displaying excellent knowledge in serving us.

Really lovely place to eat or just have a drink. Massively different to when I last visited as have had a big facelift. Really impressed and a good range of drinks including non alcoholic so I didn't have to sit and drink coke the whole time

Loved The New Crown so much we came two nights in a row. The 1st night we had only just arrived in Merthyr Tydfil on a very busy Saturday night and didn't have a booking. The owner very kindly squeezed us in. It had a lovely buzzy atmosphere, the staff were friendly and efficient and the food was delicious and plentiful. The 2nd night was equally good. The chicken Espetada on the portugese part of the menu was really yummy and the Scampi was great too both with excellent chips. Desserts were great too.

Food was great and the staff were great. Only downfall the service with drinks was really slow when ordered through the app
