Good food, friendly service and drink selection

I can't comment on the food, but I've drunk a few times in the pub. Great staff who are welcoming and the pub is so big, you never have to worry about being too packed, although I've only gone here during the week. It attracts a nice mix of students, locals and staff from the university, they all get along with each other, so its a very safe pub. One of the best features is the attention to decor, it was done up extensively a good few years ago and still gleams from that make over, the outside drinking area is worth a trip in itself.

🚇 New Cross Gate 🍺 £6.00 Level Head The New Cross House is located in the heart of New Cross in Southeast London. The nearest station is New Cross on the Windrush line. The first pub on this site was a 18th century coaching inn called The Golden Cross. The New Cross House was built in 1856 and is said to have given the area its name, formerly known as Hatcham. The pub changed its name in the early 1980’s to the Goldsmiths Tavern after the University. In 2011 the pub was substantially renovated and re-launched as the New Cross House and is now operated by Greene King. This pub was a former live music and comedy venue. It was the original venue of ‘Vic Reeves Big Night Out’, a live comedy night he started here in 1986 and also where he met future comedy partner @realbobmortimer This is a bright and airy one bar pub that has a contemporary feel. The servery dominates the landscape and stretches down the length of the bar. The decor consists of a boarded floor, a mix of seating that includes comfy booths, a pool table and some stunning Victorian glazed tiles that thankfully survived the refurb. At the rear of the pub is a partially covered beer garden. The beer selection will please most with a choice of mainstream beers, craft options and cask ales. I decided on a pint of Level Head, my pint was decent, price point was average. The food menu offers Pub Classics and Pizzas, Fish & Chips costs £16.95, Roasts are available on a Sunday. I arrived just after 3pm on a pleasant Saturday afternoon in February. The pub was busy with a mix of punters including a large group of friends with young children. The atmosphere was upbeat and convivial, there was nice feel to this pub. The service was on point, the team on duty were welcoming and friendly. Lots of history attached to this pub, I love the fact that this place is where Vic and Bob met. The pub today offers a comfortable pub experience which seemed popular with the locals. Very nice student nuclear sub near Goldsmiths on New Cross Road, friendly staff and quite quiet during the day if you want to do some work on the laptop. Good menu but did not try the food, loads of deals for Students!

The steak is horrible and the peppercorn sauce is appalling the only thing edible was the fries.

The booking process was easy & very responsive. The staff were excellent & worked around our varying number of people during the booking. Best of all, they made every effort to make sure the football match we wanted to see was viewable from our table on a smaller screen. All this during the showing of the 5 nations on the big screen! Well done New Cross House, we felt welcome & cared for. ❤️

Relaxed and welcoming is how I’d describe The New Cross House - lovely atmosphere, nice decor, good food, and great customer service. The food isn’t spectacular, but it is decent pub grub - which we thoroughly enjoyed. My only (minor) complaint is that we would have preferred our Boozy Hot Chocolate to be hot rather than tepid. The thing I enjoyed most about The New Cross House is the fact you can actually have a conversation with your friends (and hear them) rather than having to shout at each other over unbearably loud music. I really enjoyed my visit here and will definitely be returning.

This is a great place all the staff are lovely. My and my business partner basically used this place as an office. It's lovely but not too loud and there tends to be at least one table free. Food is great too. This is the only pub I've been to in about 3 months and I'm a pub 2-3 times a week sort of person.

Lovely looking inside pub, it’s very spacious with a massive outdoor area and outdoor heaters which is a bonus. Fantastic services, Great atmosphere, food was nice and prices are reasonable. They have a pool table which is great and also has tv for sports and music playing in the background. Would definitely recommend and will be looking forward to our nxt visit.

Decent pub. The staff are friendly, the drinks are good ( i mean nothing extraordinary it’s a pub, but still good). The food isn’t amazing of what we tried however, which was a few starter bites sort of thing. The decor is nice and big space good outdoor garden. They have a good pub quiz on and you can also watch the football here.

Food was disappointing, but service and atmosphere were great. We got 2 drinks, a pizza, the jerk chicken bao buns, and fries. We spent around £35. The fries were good - fresh and well salted, but the jerk chicken bao buns had at most a passing resemblance to East Asian bao. The bun itself was too bready and not soft enough to contrast with the jerk chicken, which was a little dry and needed more sauce + flavour. It felt like an experiment which wasn't ready to be shared yet. They obviously had a proper pizza oven, but our pizza was underdone and basically white on one half, so had probably not been turned and hadn't been in long enough. Because it was so underdone, it resembled a supermarket pizza more than what you'd expect from a proper pizza oven, which was disappointing. I think the pizzas had been better a couple years ago. The garden was, however, really nice, with agreat atmosphere, and TVs and boardgames. The service was friendly and relatively fast.

Great pub to dine in (3 out of 5 nights of our stay in an apartment nearby). We gladly returned for the tidy and clean place, the typical good English pub food (even the pizzas), but above all for the courtesy of the staff. I decide on a Moretti beer and my first Sunday Roast: Beef Sirloin with numerous side dishes from the reliable Greene King menu. Slightly disappointed with a £9 aperol consisting of 50ml aperol, 50ml of prosecco and the rest soda.

We went to see the match. England vs Spain. It was nice although some drunk people started a fight and we have to leave very early

England at the finals and only 3 staff. The management should have had more staff on as the 3 they had were working their socks off. 45 minutes to get served.

Had my 50th birthday party here and have to say it’s the most accommodating venue I have ever had the pleasure of having a party!! The staff and manager could not do enough to make sure things were perfect.. from seating to food to asking if there was anything they could do. As a gay man and having friends and family from all races and persuasions 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🍾🍾 everyone felt welcome and included!! Have to say one of the best nights of my life !! And world recommend this place as the best pub/ food in new cross. The manager Valentina has to be the most accommodating person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting ❤️ this place is AMAZING !! 🤩 !! Always good for a drink before a gig at the New Cross inn opposite!

Racist manager refused to serve us properly and demanded a table number that didn’t exist. So we weren’t able to purchase food. Other customers stood there in shock as this went on for over an hour. Initially refused a refund, even after being overcharged. When we wanted to leave due to how awful we were treated, straight after ordering drinks we never touched, I wasn’t allowed to leave the bar area without paying for the drinks we were overcharged for. We just wanted to leave due to the racist underhand comments of the manager, mocking behaviour and just generally poor spiteful conduct but this was also made difficult. Eventually when one of us, ordered food, it came out cold. The non poc I was with was treated completely differently. All during the England match which we’vebarely saw after paying in advance for a table. Staff also tried to tell us we didn’t know what racism is and that we just had to get to know the manager…

Great place to watch sport and friendly staff.

Looks and smells like it's had a recent refurbishment, very clean with sport on the TVs, service was good and I enjoyed the food which is typical for a Green King.

We always come here after work, a lovely local pub with such nice, helpful staff! Food is delicious and well prepared and the atmosphere is always good. They have a gorgeous beer garden out the back which is a sun trap and ideal for those sunny days. Val is an absolute sweetheart!

I used to love this pub when I regularly visited in 2019. But now it has been taken over by Green King and it has lost its charm. There is now a gambling machine and two TVs showing Sky Sports News. The selection of beers is poor, with the three cask pumps being out of use. And the food options are very disappointing for vegetarians and vegans.

This is a very charming pub near where we were staying. The food was delicious, and great drink options. We enjoyed the pizza and tried the Korean chicken dish, highly recommend getting it 😋. The staff is super friendly definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area

I ordered the katsu burger which was brilliant, I haven’t tried many IPA’s but I asked the bartender named Aaron and he recommended the faith, I’m not usually a fan of pale ales but he told me a hazy pale ale is different. After having the burger and telling the bartender it was brilliant he told I have to thank the chef Sujith. Overall I enjoyed my visit thoroughly.

Walked in grabbed a table went up and ordered some food, as I'm up at the bar ordering a reserved sign is put on to my table for a time less than an hour from now. In my opinion that's just rude and poor hospitality. It definitely made me feel unwelcome. Either they knew about the booking but only put the sign out less than an hour before people were due to arrive or someone can call up and have an existing customer kicked off a pub table just before they arrive. Either way I'm not a fan

The customer service is appalling. I placed an order for the lunch time deal at 3:04, and didn’t realise the deal ended at 3pm (though I had already placed an earlier drinks order at 2pm). Since I missed the cut off - it would be more pricey. I asked the attending staff, if the manager would be willing to override it at all - he said he would ask. She came down around 3:09 and bluntly said no. Fair enough. After a couple of minutes, I decided to go through with the order (with the full price cost). I had a student beans discount code, and there appeared to be some issue with the card machine accepting payment. The staff told me I should pay after my meal. After about 10 minutes, he signalled to me that I could pay now. I presented him with my discount code and he said that he could no longer use it because the order had already gone through and the company policy would not allow it (despite me not completing the payment and using my code). I said to him that it was strange since I hadn’t actually paid as of that time, so I should be able to use my code. I then explained to him that it was my first time here, and I’m not sure if I would come back, and that the managers’ approach and policies may inadvertently drive people away. He then proceeded to say that he couldn’t care less. I was in utter disbelief. So much so that I thought I must have misheard him - but I didn’t mishear anything because he said it again! Shocking. I told him that he was extremely rude! At that point, I completely stopped engaging with him. He apologised and said it had been a long day. Despite his later apology, it was clear there was a lack of concern for customer satisfaction and care. Additionally, a duplicate meal mistakenly emerged from the kitchen, further highlighting the disorganisation. While it seemed the worker was overwhelmed and needed more support, it doesn't excuse the poor treatment of customers. Regarding the random meal, the staff said we could keep it. In my opinion, it would have been better if he/the company themselves intentionally did this good will gesture, because of the horrific treatment I endured. From the looks of it, they probably wouldn’t even allow customers an additional bread crumb which they had not paid for. Also, there were 3 belligerent, drunk people who just couldn’t keep the noise down. The manager seemed to take great care of them. FYI all these shenanigans took place in the middle of the afternoon. Do I recommend? Absolutely not.

Had a little complaint about an extremely small portion of cold and unseasoned fries that I paid £3.50 for and the staff were rude and didn’t care about my complaint at all, they just said “there’s nothing we can do.” I would have expected at least for them to make be a fresh portion but they did not care a less. FYI “house seasoned fries on the menu” means unseasoned, small and cold.

Nice place, sheltered garden, brilliant staff, although food was very greasy. Went back and tried the food again, it was fantastic, excellent pie, brilliant vege burger definitely a 5 star, so we decided to visit again. Alas, cold food. So, I guess it's very hit and miss.

Although New Cross isn't the nicest of areas to visit in London, The New Cross House is a great place within it. We watched a world cup game here and had fantastic seats. The drinks were also very well priced and it had a really friendly vibe.

Glad to see the Sunday roast menu has been vastly improved but I can’t help remembering the disappointments here. It really gripes me to think that they couldn’t have included cauliflower cheese and yorkshire puddings before. The past doesn’t forget I guess…

Gave us barely any food, overcharged me and the whole place has been completely refurbished and changed.. No lgbtq flags despite it being a well known place for the community. Was appealing and a waste of money.

Their sweet potato fries and chicken wings are amazing. It's a shame they never have sticky toffee pudding every time I've been there.

I've been in twice since the refurbishment (which looks good!) and found it to be a mixed bag. Service varied vastly between staff - the young person serving was lovely & attentive on my first visit. On my second visit I found the person behind the bar patronising and frankly a bit odd. It's not great form to repeatedly tell someone to cheer up even when they've said they're feeling fine... Beer offering is a standard Green King affair, nice to have a pint of Northern Monk's faith for under £6 though. Food again was a mixed bag. Burger, chips and halloumi fries were of a good standard. The wings however, were bone dry, with a mere suggestion of the sauce they're advertised with, probably a GP saving device but for around a tenner I'd expect more. Don't fear the sauce!!!

Went here as the pub from outside looked decent, tried ordering pizza but had no pizza dough left, then asked for a Cheese and bacon or katsu curry burger but also had no burgers, so was left with the BBQ chicken which cost £17, it was one small piece of chicken with burger cheese microwaved on top, the side of chips was 10 chips as shown in photo and onion rings were cold and definitely re heated.

We spent our Sunday in London at the New Cross House, and it was absolutely the best time we had in London. The drinks are delicious and reasonably priced. The food was reasonably priced and delicious as well. I had the roast beef, and it was cooked perfectly. My friend had the fish and chips, and that was cooked to perfection! After our lunch, we spent the next few hours hanging out and drinking and the staff amazing! They were so nice and friendly! It was a wonderful experience!

This place is right in the middle of New Cross and New Cross gate stations and has plenty of seating including indoors, outdoors and a cute extra building! They offer pizza which we didn’t try but loved the decor, the pride flag painting and the decent prices! A great place for a cute drink and catchup ✨

I had the lunch special of rib eye burger .... If was served with skin on chips very nice burger, at one point I did wonder how it would fit in my mouth ... Nice lil place to go and grab a bite or catch up on some work. The food tasted nice, I got a margherita pizza and chunky chips. only negative comment was that the food order got backed up, so we had to wait for our order to be placed. It's very child friendly, so it could be noisy at times.
