The Ness Hotel Restaurant in Teignbridge

Just back from quite possibly the poorest roast and service with a terrible atmosphere for a long time. Plenty of staff, woeful service, had to wave for attention, then go to the bar to ask for service later. This isn’t being over fussy, trying to catch staff eye didn’t work. There seemed to be a male and female manager that couldn’t even raise a smile let alone serve. There was a red haired lady and a very young girl that seemed the only ones working and keeping the place together. Then the food, Luke warm at best. Reheated roast potatoes, burnt yorkshires, and beef that defied cutting let alone chewing. Deserts thankfully good. Then the bill, including “ service charge “ over £200! Sadly the outside appearance during work reflected on the quality of the food and service. Usually a great place to visit, so much so that it’s a 2 hour round trip to visit and always worth it until now. What’s happened? Where’s the quality gone? Where’s the service. A smile goes a long way even if busy. We visited at 4pm so extremely quiet so no excuse

My husband and myself have stayed at the Ness before but this time was exceptional, we came to visit my brother who was in hospital the staff were amazing especially Trudy who picked us up from the hospital when we couldn’t get a taxi very kind, all the staff were very hardworking and helpful must mention Beth who had a wonderful personality and never stopped running around but found time for a chat, all the staff were very good, we had food which was very good and a lovely Sunday roast they were very busy but food came out quick. The manager should be very proud of his hardworking staff. We stayed in a lovely room very comfortable and overlooking the bay. We will return hopefully in better circumstances. Thank you to everyone.

Overpriced and very disappointing Sunday roast, visited in a cold February, the restaurant was very nice, it must be stunning in the summer and very busy. We had the roast beef and chicken, both very poor. The beef was tough and stringy, and chicken dry! Undercooked almost raw vegetables and anaemic roast potatoes, and all very dry with little gravy. We also ordered a side of cauliflower cheese, which was bland had no cheese taste whatsoever. Our dogs ate more than us, I ordered the cheese board for two, and easily finished it, it was very nice indeed but would not have fed two people. The prices are pretty steep which is totally fine for good food but not this. The manager was good he did not charge for one of the roasts or the bland cauliflower cheese. The Outland stout was very good.

We absolutely loved this hotel and bar.We had the most beautiful stay in this gorgeous hotel.Our room was so comfortable and very clean and cosy.Breakfast was super with great choice and superb views.Staff were lovely, especially Trudy!Really can't wait to return to this beautiful hotel.

Well I wasn't sure what to expect after reading some of the reviews but I can honestly say it was excellent. There was a jazz/swing band playing and along with the beautiful cosy decor it was just fantastic. The food was amazing, I had roast pork and it was probably one of the best roasts I've had. All the veg was cooked to perfection, the pork moist and tender and the yorkshire pudding was to die for. The staff were lovely too so the over all score is 10/10 ... well done the Ness we will be back very soon 😀

After 12 days of visitors we booked a night to unwind. We were greeted at reception by Vicky who was incredibly friendly and helpful. After upgrading us to a room that would be vacant, she guided us to the welcoming lounge area. The room was beyond excellent. A lovely sea view with balcony, bathroom with copper bath and a tv disguised as a mirror were highlights along with the superking (probably) bed. A comfortable good night’s sleep followed. Very good. Lovely atmposhere, great location and both the customer service and the food were excellent. We went on a Sunday and there is a great choice of roasts, including a delicious veggie option, plus a good selection of other dishes if you don't fancy a roast.

A very well run pub by lady manager with super smiley girls (Katie and Jess). Amazing roast and pudding. Obviously a great chef too. What a team! Thank you.

Food was average. My salad was so boring. It had no dressing. Three of us were let down because apparently the butcher had not delivered the duck. An excuse they seem to make alot.

Popped in for Lunch as we nearly booked to stay but chose somewhere else. Had two Burgers and Cokes for drinks and at £45 I'd say it was way overpriced, definitely overcooked and I'm glad we didn't book a room. Limited parking (5 spaces) means paying in an also overpriced public car park. Fair to say we won't be going back😮

Lovely building and location but I must say the food was awful and it was very expensive…. Cost £25 for one Sunday roast beef dinner with an extra cauliflower cheese. It was all very bland and the roast potatoes were anaemic looking and very dry. I actually couldn’t eat them. Everything was just about warm. The yorkie was nice though. My husband had the duck and I think it was £23 and again wasn’t very good. Really disappointed and we wont be returning.

We had a lovely relaxed lunch with a great view celebrating my sons birthday. We were impressed with staff knowledge/questions about allergies.

Six of us ( plus dog) stayed here for one night and we all had a great time. All 3 rooms were really nice and we all enjoyed our evening meals. We have stayed here before as we love staying in Shaldon when we visit South Devon. We thought the staff were all attentive, friendly and professional....the breakfast is great too!

So much to complain about. This place is terrible. Such a bad experience. The staff even said they were embarrassed to work there. Very limited menu. We were told the menus were in a seasonal transition and this was why what was on offer was a limited choice. 50% of the desserts were unavailable. When I asked to speak with the manager I was told there wasn’t one. !!!!!!!!!

Lovely food, very attentive service and a beautiful location. Could do with a small ramp to assist wheelchair users, but very helpful staff enabled us to get in.

Nice place, lovely views etc but I would not go back as they are a card only establishment and I 100% do not agree with this policy.. cash is freedom and there is no reason for ANY place to operate that system.

We have visited The Ness on a few occasions & this was our wedding anniversary. I was very disappointed at the food considering the price. They obviously rely on the lovely location. The “triple cooked” chips were clearly frozen not fresh & the chicken breast was very over cooked & looked like it had been microwaved. Presentation was poor a couple of cherry tomatoes & a bit of rocket. Very disappointing.

Lovely location and ambience let down by poor quality, over-priced food. I would recommend for a drink only.

My husband and I went to celebrate our wedding anniversary just a nice spot to have lunch... Not overly fussy but a good meal is all we wanted really... The portions were ridiculously small, the food was absolutely rubbish to be honest I was particularly shocked at my dinner the chicken ceaser salad... As it had only a few scraps of chicken in with lots of chicken skin!!!! Bacon was all fast lumps!! So we will never go again it was also very costly!!!!!

30/06/2024 I came here for a Sunday lunch by myself. Food was terrible, no check back given so was sat with it infront of me for 20 mins before I could get someone's attention. Gravy was cold on arrival. Yorkshire pudding tasted like grease. The beef was way too rare.

Disappointed with lunch at the Ness. Previously have enjoyed our meals there, but the food quality is poor and overpriced, I had mussels, which were our of a bag, tiny and no taste, with a piece of dry bread. We had booked for a lunch the next day, which I will cancel. Such a shame, as a beautiful location.

Mums Birthday meal. Location and décor was fantastic, probably the nicest in the area. Drinks ordered promptly and arrived fine. First waitress who seated us said the salmon wasn't available, however then when the second waitress came who ordered the drinks with us she said no it was available which was slightly confusing. Waitress took our food order including my wife's who ordered the steak frites, took how she wanted it cooked etc. and everything got written into her check pad, however when everyone else's food arrived my wife's steak was completely missed off. After about 5 mins of realizing everyone else had arrived but hers wasn't here yet I asked third waitress to check the order and she said it had been completely missed off the order which seemed really strange considering she had taken her cooking temp selection at the table. She said that they would do it asap, had to wait around 20 mins after everyone had had their for my wife to get hers shortly after. Food was nice when it arrived to be fair but seemed disappointing that we couldn't eat together considering it was a birthday dinner. Not sure if it wasn't checked on in the kitchen, a check back to the table from a member of staff could have potentially picked this up too but we didn't get one. Food was decent when it all did eventually arrive but not sure if lack of communication messed things up which seemed strange again due to the fact that we we're the one ones eating in the entire restaurant at that time too. Steak was comped off the bill at the end which was appreciated.

We stayed here in a 'superior double' room for just one night , it's a lovely old building with beautiful views. The room was really nice with a great shower and we were very comfortable. It's really nice that a staff member takes you to your room and also good that there's a voucher in your room which gets you a free drink at the bar!. This was a Sunday and we ate in the restaurant, the service was good and the fish & chips and steak pie were very good. Breakfast was excellent too. We visit Devon at least once a year and this is the third time we have stayed here - it's such a good location and the staff are all lovely. We'll be back ...

Very disappointed by the quality of the food. The service staff were very polite and helpful but seriously let down by the kitchen staff. Won’t go into detail of what we had but left feeling it was the worst meal we have ever had. Would not recommend even to my worst enemy!

Food was good, attentive staff and comfortable setting to share memories with family. A good balance between fine dining and a casual visits, makes inclusive for all.

Being locals, we have visited this restaurant on a number of occasions over the last few years, and found the food to be good. However, today I found the food to be poor. I ordered beetroot Wellington, boiled potatoes, roasted carrots and broccoli stems. Sadly the pastry on the Wellington was soggy and the beetroot filling quite tasteless. The Broccoli was stringy and tough, and the potatoes overdone. The waitress, when collecting the plates, asked if everything was okay, and I told her my experience as helpful feedback. She told me she would give my feedback to the kitchen staff et cetera. I had expected that I might receive an apology or an explanation, but although we stayed to finish our drinks, no members of staff thought to speak to us about the disappointment. Hopefully this is not a sign that standards are slipping at the Ness.

We decided to go somewhere different for lunch but actually ended up quite disappointed. Food was barely warm and wasn't anything special, despite the cost. I would normally have been happy to pay a 10% service charge, but having been seated, order taken and food delivered, I was left wondering what if was actually for. We were not offered any condiments or asked of our meal was OK,, basically no interaction whatsoever.

Sunday lunch, very disappointing for the money. Food was luke warm 3 pathetically small roast potatoes, 3 small slices of beef, a couple of carrots and a very small mix of something else. I would strongly suggest you'd currently be better off saving your money and going to a Toby or Spoons, half the price twice the portions, same standard of food, won't be going back.

My birthday weekend getaway bedroom excellent hospitality first class Katie gave us a blanket as we were having a meal for our little dog to lay on also, the staff gave me some nice flowers for my birthday and Katie sang happy birthday to me as she was bringing my dessert

Sunday lunch with my wife and friends,six of us. Choice of meat(s) from staff information was different to choices of meat(s) from supervisor. Waitresses were very polite and worked well. Management member somewhat 'foreign and indifferent'. Sunday Lunch Beef was not tender. Dessert was the SMALLEST christmas pudding I have ever paid for! Great live music,why we all went. Wonderful view. Overpriced and forced gratuities. Will not bother again to eat there. 6/10.

After a lovely walk along Ness Beach, we decided to pop in after noticing a roaring log fire! We managed (after some waiting) to bag a table next to the fire place. Friendly service and a good choice of local drinks as well as those from further afield.

My sister and I are local and visited one lunchtime during the week. It’s a lovely pub and the staff were wonderful when my sister was taken ill. They looked after her incredibly well, offered drinks and sugary foods and kept an eye on us until she was feeling better. We can’t thank them enough. The food was also good and there are decent veggie and vegan options!

Having booked for lunchtime for my husbands birthday, we were really looking forward to dining with the spectacular views. We were seated at our table and then seemed to be forgotten, ages until a waitress returned to take our order. I had the roasted beetroot with goats cheese & husband had the ham hock terrine, disappointing portion sizes for the cost. Got a bit worried when the waiter returned to clear our starters and asked if we would like to see the dessert menu !! Mains was Shepherds Pie and I had the Nduja Chicken, both tasted lovely but the portions were rather small, especially the side of vegetables with the Shepherds pie. We were contemplating having a dessert but the service was so slow our car park ticket was running out. Presentation of the food was lovely but the slow service spoilt the experience.

A great spot and we got a table in the conservatory. Also Monday is 30% off day, which meant lunch was £17 for 2. The lunch menu was great and I really enjoyed the ham and eggs. The service was good and the food well cooked. Bearing in mind we don't drink I think full price is on the expensive side and would make it nearly £30 for 2 lunches with 1 lime and soda, but on Monday... great value.

This is a great pub with good food. The parking a small minor problem. The biggest problem I found inside this pub was dogs barking don't think they should even be in pubs that serve food as I constantly believe dogs and food do not go... They also sell a good pint of barefoot real ale.

Wasn't informed about being card payments so had a problem. Dogs constantly barking, didn't realise about lack of parking although there is a car park nearby it is not free.

Haven't visited here for a while. There food was good, the atmosphere friendly, staff were courteous and helpful.... UNTIL it came to paying the bill. I put cash and a tip on the tray, only to be told "We don't accept cash". If we'd have known that BEFORE we would have eaten, we wouldn't have bothered. The manager tried to tell me it had always been that way... NO, IT WASN'T. It might have been pre covid, but those rules don't apply any more. By refusing to accept cash, you're causing those customers who continue to use cash embarrassment. You are party to a growing government/banker policy that before long will outlaw the use of cash... Lending between family members and friends, savings for children and grandchildren with the coins given to them as pocket money to name a couple of instances. The wider implications will cause deep social divide and difficulties for pensioners and the low paid. Banks are already questioning their customers who make withdrawals how they intend to spend their money. This has every relevance to the services you offer. Until there is a management policy change, we won't be joining you again, which is sad. If you DO intend to retain this policy, PLEASE advise customers on your website and front doors so that we can make an informed choice. But then, there's possibly a reason why you DON'T do this. #cashisking

Nice looking hotel that doesn’t accept cash! And we were not told! A manager tried to tell us there are signs but she was the one who marched us through the place to our table and didn’t point any out. We hate when places pull this on us and wonder what they would do if we start to only the carry cash!? hmm The vegan roast was nice but as it was vegan and not vegetarian it was minus the Yorkshire pudding. No one thought to give us anything extra in its place so I asked. A nice server said he would talk to the chef. We expected an extra potato but he came back with a few potatoes and some extra veg. One thing we have to moan about and it’s not exclusive to this place is the small amount of gravy! It arrives in a small pot that would be more appropriate for a kids meal. Far too many places do this now it’s a legit crime against Sunday Roasts. As the server was so generous in providing extras for our meal we felt it courteous to order desert. The desert was very nice but you can get the same apple pie in supermarkets. We are sure of it! It’s a shame places don’t bake their own anymore. It’s a lovely place Sheldon and the restaurant/hotel is amazing as is the history. Ps…you can make vegan Yorkshire pudding you know. It’s very easy ;)

Arrived to have lunch, the roast lunch was underwhelming to say the least. The roast pork and beef had been sliced and had dried out, the leeks were grey in colour, the roast potatoes tasted like yesterdays, the Yorkshire black and tough. The staff were very friendly, nothing too much trouble. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. Even willing to alter the menu to cater for my daughter’s allergies.
