Called in this pub after dropping the daughter off for padle boarding at carsington with her guides group. Not many places in the area were serving food but this place was recommended by a pub that had just packed in for the day. What a fantastic find. The lady behind the bar was so lovely and the food was amazing. Home cooked chips were delicious and no one complained about our over tired two year old who landed up with a massive pizza he actually nearly ate. We loved it, beautiful food, fantastic pub.

Just a great pub all round, we were staying locally for the weekend and came in each night, the owners are legends, the vibe was awesome, it’s one of those pubs you just walk into and feel at home. If you’re around the area you have to go

Called in this pub on a group-on deal. Went for the burger and chips, it was so dry I could hardly eat it. Between the wife and I we must have left a full dinner. The pud was a “local” and it felt like it went quite when we entered, I checked that I hadn’t grown a second head, all clear on that front, just felt uncomfortable in there.

I have the steak and ale pie which nearly beat me it was about the size of the plate and absolutely delicious, the wife ad the cheese and onion pie an is still saying how fresh the vegetables tasted. Definitely just gone to the top of our list

This pub is on the main road and so really easy to find. It seemed like a pub full of locals who all knew each other but the bar staff and waiting staff were all friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a good wholesome meal here and the restaurant/eating area is to the far side of the bar so you aren't eating where people are standing drinking.

We decided to call into the Nags Head at Hulland for a quick sandwich. The pubs was quite well patronised for a Tuesday lunch time but the service was immediate and friendly. We both chose a chicken and bacon bloomer with a side of chips (at just £1.00 for the Chios). We didn't need to wait long but availed ourselves of the fast, free wifi. 'Doorsteps' would be a good adjective to add with the description of the sandwich. Fresh, crusty granary bread struggling to retain the contents. Large chunks of chicken and two ample rashers of smoked bacon with a nicely prepared side salad completed a meal capable of satisfying the hungriest of Ploughmen. Cooked to perfection. The side of thick cut chips looked a little anaemic but tasted lovely. My wife thought the colour was attributed to the fact they were cooked from actual potatoes rather than from a freezer packet. We fancied a coffee afterwards and ordered two 'normal' ones. We were therefore pleasantly surprised to be served with a large cafeteria. A really nice touch. So top marks for food, service and value. The Nags Head has now intrigued us. Think we'll come back to try dinner or perhaps their Sunday lunch.

Walked to here from a camping site just outside the village. Excellent pub grub. Enjoyed a three course lunch for £7.25. Can't beat that for value. Came out thinking we shouldn't have had the pud but managed to just about walk it off back to the site. Very friendly owners and lovely open fire!

A very good welcome from the landlord, the pub had a nice atmosphere. He gave us menus and showed a very comprehensive specials board. The food di take a while to arrive but was well worth waiting for. All was freshly cooked , I had a fish pie which was full of fish excellent , my husband had the minty lamb hotpot which said was really tasty. We have booked to take a large group there in May and the landlady was very helpful and accomadating.

Having taken a seven day holiday in Hulland village, this was the nearest pub to us, we had a drink on our first visit, and returned two days later for a meal, my wife had scampi with chips and salad, myself I had the Nags Head special cheeseburger, again with chips and salad. My goodness was the meal filling, we certainty did not need a dessert!!!The service was excellent, and the pub itself quickly filled with locals, whom is has to be said had a great sense of humour, some thing that is lacking in many pubs today. The lady who served us was so accommodating, and gave us both a warm welcome, as did the landlord, enquiring if every thing was ok, with the meal itself. It was a pleasure to have eaten here, and I certainly would recommend this establishment to anyone who enjoys a good pint and meal.

We were passing through at lunch time and thought we would stop for a meal. We are very wary of pub food generally as we think the standard is somewhere between edible and OK. However we thought, well, we are in Derbyshire so you never know. The food was awful. The salmon fish cakes boring as hell and my fish and chips very poor (the bit of fish was somewhere in the middle of an enormous amount of batter) and the fish cakes were 'dead'. The chips we both had were 'limp'.Don't stop here even if you are desperate.

Been to Nags Head a few times and the food has always been fantastic. On this occasion we had a sunday dinner, the beef is to die for and the portion size is massive!! You get 3 slices of beef, 4 different vegetables and boiled potatoes, a roast potato and a huge yorkshire pudding. On sundays the menu is smaller and just the ones that are on the board. In the week the menu is big and there is something for everyone. The pies are also homemade and huge, with chips/potatoes and vegetables. The curry is also very nice. They always have specials on the board to.

My son (age 7) and I visited the pub after a bike ride around Carsington Reservoir. We arrived around 1.15 ish. We were greated by a friendly gentleman who gave us the menus. It was very quiet, only a handful of customers. We placed our order and were happy with the service. My son had a hot chocolate, he wasn't keen on the taste as it definitely wasn't a branded version. There wasn't that much choice for him on the menu, he ordered pizza in the end. I had a beef chilli and rice from the specials board. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The chilli had been microwaved and was a bit congealed in places but edible. My son enjoyed his meal. The food is basic pub food, it was a tad pricey but would return in the future. The service was good and the place was clean.

When we went in the pub at 7.20pm on a Monday they had to check they were still serving food and turn the lights on in the restaurant for us. No atmosphere and most of the food was out the freezer. The mozzerella sticks were rock solid and the lasagne was microwaed with half a block of cheap cheese melted on top. It was a shame because the staff were lovely and the service overall was great. Expensive for what we had.

10 family members, ranging in age from 13 to 80, met for a birthday meal at the Nags Head in Hulland Ward. We ordered a wide range of different dishes (starters, mains and sweets) from the menu and were all very impressed with the quality of the food. It was all well cooked, well presented, and they were all generous portions. There was a gap between courses but the food is all home made and there were a lot different items to prepare. We found the prices very reasonable too.We would highly recommend it for any-one looking for lunch or evening meals.

Now, you might not think of going to a traditional village pub for afternoon tea. But you should try it at the refurbished Nag's Head in Hulland Ward, near Ashbourne and Carsington Water in Derbyshire. I am a fan of afternoon tea, and this offering is superb and incredible value. It's not elegantly presented, but it is a full meal and it's brought to you with a smile. The Victoria sponge and scones were amongst the best I've ever tasted. So, if you're visiting Carsington, avoid its boring visitor centre cafe and treat yourself to tea at he Nag's!

I have visited the Nags Head a couple of times now, we tend to go for Sunday lunch when we are staying on a caravan site near by. The Sunday dinners are lovely, plenty of food - normally too much to eat! If you need more vegetables or potatoes then the staff are very accommodating and will happily bring more to your table. Would recommend the Nags Head to others, good portion sizes for an excellent value.

We had minted lamb and potato, servied with mushy peas and new potatoes. Good food, good portions, good value. Recommended.

We called in here for an impromptu evening meal with our 4 year old grandson as we were staying at nearby Landal Darwin Forest & he wanted the lasagne that Barringtons had on their Children’s Menu. We ordered our drinks & perused the menus, whereupon our Grandson decided he didn’t fancy it after all, nor anything else on the menu! In desperation, I asked the kind & patient gentleman taking our order (& everyone else’s) if he might be able to do a jacket potato with cheese & baked beans (not on the menu!) to which he replied cheerfully, “No problem!” we then ordered our own meals of scampi, peas & chips. The meals were served very quickly which, when you have a grouchy but hungry 4 year old, was extremely welcome! We soon polished off our tasty meals & drinks, paid the bill & were on our way. I just had to review to say how grateful we were to the lovely gentleman who looked after us so well that evening; over and above service & delicious food - what’s not to like!?
