Excellent gluten free afternoon tea. I am coeliac and the owner was very knowledgeable about it. The best gluten free scones I’ve ever had.

Afternoon tea booked for me as a treat and it certainly was. The food was made and served with care and was excellent value for money. It was delicious. The service was friendly and welcoming. We were encouraged to ask if we had any requests and they happily provided us with a box to take some things home. Neither of us could manage to finish it all as there was more than enough. We are tea drinkers and when we asked for more tea on top of the two pots already served they happily obliged without extra charge. No surprises as it was just as portrayed from the pictures online.

Had a fantastic afternoon tea as a takeaway for Mothers Day. The sandwich and cake selection were delicious as were the scones. Very generous portions and good value. The children enjoyed their afternoon tea too. All packaged nicely in pretty boxes. I have also used The Mug Tree for sweetie cones for my son’s birthday earlier this year which were great. They each had a personalised sticker and they were a great value alternative to party bags.

A delightful little oasis. I had been treated to a vegan afternoon tea a couple of weeks ago. Not only was everything very tasty and well presented, the content was generous too, exceptional value. So l returned impromptu for a light lunch. Though there was nothing specific on the menu, not only was l offered choices, it was done without my being made to feel l was imposing. A delicious, fresh sandwich with lovely trimmings. Friendly and a very welcome find. The teas and coffees are interesting and good, too. Oat milk flat white - full marks!

My young daughter and I travelled 30 miles to meet with friends. My friends had been before and had said how good it had been. We had booked a table, when we were seated, no menu is given. Thankfully our friends have been and told us what they were having and so we had the same. Throughout our afternoon tea, we had to constantly ask for such things as a tea spoon or sugar for the coffee. Napkins as these were not provided. The children's unicorn afternoon tea that my daughter had was appaling. There was nothing special about this, again our friends who we were with asked for the girls sandwiches to go back and to be shaped as. Unicorns as thats what they have had before. Storage is seems to be an issue in the cafe as all the boxes of sweets and supplies are piled up on a table!I expected so much more and was very disappointed with the quality of what is offered and the service.

So looking forward to afternoon tea having read many positive reviews but sadly disappointed. Visit took place on 31/08/20. Team members polite throughout. No attention to detail. Our table had a plate with a knife on each plate for each setting. Had to ask for extra cutlery to eat the other food ordered, no napkins provided and sadly no milk for tea! Felt that 3 team members just had to ask if we needed anything but did not. Service robotic. Team members provided what we needed when asked with no apology. Having eaten out on many times during the Covid-19 pandemic most eateries have found a way to deal with not placing cutlery/napkins on tables. Sandwiches fresh-tasting, flavoursome with generous fillings. For me, the major part of an afternoon tea experience is the homemade cakes. The selection of cakes presented was very disappointing. I would not say I am a cake aficionado but I can certainly taste the difference between a homemade cake and one that's not. For me, the Victoria sandwich, lemon Swiss roll and Battenburg cakes did not taste homemade. The scones presented were tasty but so small. Have never seen such small scones! Had hoped the scones provided would be as on social media but they were not. Better cakes on display in the establishment and surprised these not part of afternoon tea. Loose tea was flavoursome and tasty. It would have been nice for team members to ask if we wanted more tea but this did not happen. By engaging with us more there could have been more upsell. This establishment is very local to me and I had really hoped it would be good so that I could visit more often. Sadly, following my experience, this will not be the case.

Our first visit out since lockdown and glad to see this fabulous place has survived and has reopened with some great additional outside tables. They've made excellent adjustments to be covid safe, including a fab new online menu you can order from and pay directly. It felt very reassuring - especially as we witnessed the staff throughly cleaning down and sanitising a recently vacated table. We originally stopped just for coffees and a milkshake for the kids but the food smelt so good we ended up upgrading to lunch! Clear plates all round as usual - delicious fresh toasties with the nicest salad dressing I think I've ever had! Children's lunches were spot on, fun and perfectly portioned for pre-schoolers!Coffee was great, well made and very tasty and I was very envious of my son's huge milkshake!! Took home a huge caramel brownie to enjoy later as we were too full for pudding, but their selection of cakes was very tempting. Highly recommend - 10/10!

When we go for a day trip, we always go looking for an independent tea room in the area we are visiting as we usually have better experiences than at the big chains. In East Grinstead, just off the London Rd/High St junction, we found The Mug Tree.I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to eat when I walked in but the big choice of sundaes settled my mind very quickly. This is how I ended up devouring a yummy Lotus Biscuit Sundae! In the meantime, my wife was enjoying her salmon bagel with salad and crisps on the side.We enjoyed our food and the overall experience so, most likely, we'll visit it again but to get the 5th star I think they should put more attention to details. My latte was served without a teaspoon and the food was served without napkins. I noticed the same happening at the table next to us, where they had to call the waitress just to have some napkins.

I visit The Mug Tree often as it has the best loose leaf tea in the area and I'm fussy about my tea! Visited this week with my small children and a friend for a cream tea and some toasties for the kids. As usual scones were fab, and the kids tried the banoffee milkshake which went down very well. Staff are always lovely, and really good with the kids too which is important to me when choosing a place for lunch as some local places are not really child friendly. Sadly they had run out of my favourite tea but they recommend another one and it was perfect, with it without milk. I'm moving out of the area soon and I'm sad that I won't be able to visit The Mug Tree as often as I do now, but I shall certainly be making the effort to visit when I'm nearby.

This was the 3rd time I have visited The Mug Tree and it will unfortunately be my last. Myself and my friend came to the mug tree for some lunch as on our first visit it was ‘a nice little quiet spot) and we decided it would be our regular place from now on. The previous time we visited the service was really slow and the young girl serving seemed to be more interested in her phone than the customers and the cakes were not anywhere near as nice and the selection was poor but we thought this may have been a one off and decided that it wouldn’t stop us going back. Today however was very disappointing, the tea was very weak and the water wasn’t very hot so the second cup poured was barley even warm, I ordered the crumpets which arrived at the table cold and not toasted. I would have asked for them to be toasted a bit more but the staff stayed in the kitchen for the entirety of our lunch And no one checked to see if everything was ok. The cake was supposed to be lemon drizzle but was dry and we couldn’t taste any lemon at all as it was an average sponge cake. I also found it quite strange that the cafe was so empty on a Friday lunchtime and the staff decided to sit on the table behind us and have their lunch without clearing our plates away and asking if we wanted anything else.... the atmosphere was not great and could use some music or even a radio in the background. It’s a real shame because there are so many fantastic reviews but we haven’t experienced a 5 * rated visit.

Scones were fresh baked and still warm (I did have to ask for butter tho). Sandwiches were nice. The stars of the show were the cakes! Victoria sponge, macaroons, truffles, lemon meringues and a mini pot of strawberry and cream dessert. I was so stuffed I had to take some home, which my husband and kids devoured immediately! Also tried one of the new twisted soda drinks, which I was please to see came with a reusable straw! We visited this morning (myself, two children and a dog) and were looked after superbly. The dog was made welcome with a water bowl and biscuit. The children loved it - nice children’s menu - and as we paid the bill they were given lollies fashioned into ghosts!

Visited this absolute gem with my wife and toddler. They were really busy but the staff/owners welcomed us in and were really friendly, making a fuss of my son. Nice traditional menu, really varied and an excellent choice of loose leaf teas, which my wife loved so much she tried 2 different ones whilst we were there. Food was all freshly made and was superb; great toasted sandwiches and awesome food for kids, really impressive, especially the extra details and little touches. There was a great selection of cakes, all homemade and they also had an impressive ice cream menu that we'll definitely be going back to try out. Service was very good and quick even though they were busy. I highly recommend everyone try this place, we will definitely be back again!

A really welcoming, friendly and warm experience. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the food is fresh and tasty, and to top it off, it’s family friendly (unlike other near by cafes).

For my Hen Do my bridesmaids surprised me with an action packed day all within a few miles of East Grinstead stead. We had afternoon tea at the Mug Tree. The owners gave us sole use and provided glass painting too. They decorated the room and provided a lovely spread of sandwiches and cakes.

We were visiting East Grinstead for the day and I wanted somewhere nice but not over priced, for a light lunch with my mum who was celebrating her birthday.

I visited today with my son for a themed afternoon tea which was spectacularly laid out. We were the first visitors to arrive and were immediately made to feel welcome. A lovely spread awaited us with sumptuous sandwiches, scones and yummy cakes and treats all were lovingly hand made and had lots of extra little details for the theme that must have taken so much time and were well worth the effort as we were just delighted!

Popped in with my parents for a cup of tea and coffee but once we looked at the menu we all ended up with the most amazing sandwich selection. I cannot recommend the brie and cranberry sandwiches enough. Loved the choice of bread. Im not a coffee drinker and The tea choice was so rich it was hard to choose. Lovely touch with the mini milk bottles... And the freshly baked cakes especially the Dundee cake, finished off a perfect lunch.

This is a great little family run tea room hidden away just along from Waitrose. They never disappoint and their offering is so impressive. We had a very enjoyable lunch, freshly made, delicious and generously filled sandwiches. There was a very tempting choice of homemade cakes too but we opted for sundaes from their amazingly detailed and creative ice cream sundaes menu as it was so hot! We were blown away! They were huge and absolutely delicious, nice to know their gelato is locally handmade too. Fab coffee too, absolutely spot on. They provide impeccable service too, they are well worth a visit if you're in town!

If you like cream teas, unicorns, and really lovely staff go and visit these guys. They do everything from Unicorn milkshakes for the kids to vegan cream teas for mum. Delicious cakes on offer and very accommodating staff. There’s toys and books for little ones to keep them entertained too while mums and dads can have a chat. Love it!

Haven't been for a while as been travellin but still a gem. Great menu if you have young children, toys to keep them amused too. If only my children were still little. On a hot afternoon it was a pleasure to have a vanilla milkshake. Next time I won't leave so long to visit

The Mug tree, thought nice friendly staff ! They use to make the most amazing sandwiches with very thick granary bread, several friends have said the same thing. We liked the mug tree because you had a good range & lovely teas/coffees & cakes. We do know what we had been served on 3 occasions, maybe they can let me know if they run out of bread & just bought off the shelve packet thin bread! The sarnies were not good, salad looked like it had better days & of course crisps as normal on the plate. So I mentioned on Facebook that we always went there and even birthday as was always good, but sarnies have gone down hill to flat looking ones. But put more polity as alway support local businesses. THEY BASICALLY SAID THEY HAVE USED THE SAME BREAD, SAID THAT WASNT THE CASE & BLOCKED ME FROM THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE, really disappointed ! Really did not expect that response what I thought was a professional Cafe. Well I think that says everything, would me & my friends lie! No we we’re trying to help to get it back to how they use to do!

I regularly visit the Mug Tree with my 2 children or to meet with friends for a relaxing tea and scones. The food is always spot on, and the staff are happy to adapt things if you need. The unicorn menu is Great, both my son and I adore the unicorn milkshake! The most extensive tea selection in town, and it's all real loose leaf tea which is hard to find on the high street. I usually partake in a cream tea as the scones are always freshly baked daily, and who can resist a warm scone with lashings of cream and jam! There is a selection of toys for young kids, which helps keep little ones entertained while you enjoy a cuppa. Recently the Mug Tree won an award for being one of the most breastfeeding friendly cafes in the UK, and they rightly deserve such an award, I always feel welcome to feed my daughter when I visit and I see many other mums doing the same. Staff are always friendly, and toilets lovely and clean. Highly recommend!

I tried it for the first time, just for a coffee. There were only two teenagers front of house, behind the counter. Cooking staff were in the rear. Although not busy and seated just two metres away, it took the teenagers more than five minutes to take my order and more and almost ten minutes for the coffee to be dispensed. Fortunately, I could read my newspaper. The two ladies, who spoke in barely audible whispers, gave me the impression of playing at trying to run a shop and not succeeding. Perhaps I caught them on a bad morning, but I shall never go back. (I fled round the corner and thankfully discovered "The Nest" which was far more up to the mark.) For the record, the Mug Tree had two high chairs for toddlers, both of which were in use during my visit.

The food was fantastic, the build a bear teddy’s were brilliant and we had so much choice. The staff are amazing, they are so friendly and brilliant with the children as well as adults. Amazing pizza ! There is a good range of pizza options on the menu. We have eaten here several times and have always been satisfied. Must book ahead if you want a Friday or Saturday night table. I much prefer eating in , than taking away as due to the style of pizza , it's better eaten as soon as possible.

I'll start with some good things: The staff was friendly and the overall atmosphere was nice, they have some board games which are great fun for the kids and adults. That's about it. I honestly don't understand how this pub has such a high rating. Maybe because people only have a drink there and then leave 5*. Nothing we tried tasted or looked better than 3*. Pretty much the only thing on the kids menu that was available was fish fingers and chips. They even ran out of pasta. Adults menu didn't have much to offer either. We ended up having a pie, burgers and scampi, and it just wasn't great. No one enjoyed their meals and I had an upset stomach all evening after that burger.

I love this tea room. The ladies that run it are so lovely and hardworking. The cakes are the best bit about Balcombe.

Overall staff are very nice, beer is good, food portions are embarrassingly small, this was £18, the staff said they have used cod rather then haddock that’s why it’s smaller and thicker, it was tiny…. I’ve actually really enjoyed coming here over the last few years but probably won’t eat here again.
