A very welcome cup of tea after a rather wet day of walking. The owner was welcoming and very kindly let me wait in the tearoom for my lift. They seem to have a good selection of things to eat and drink. Recommended.

We had got to the point we needed tea and cake. We walked in and saw the log burner we were sold. They have a separate area to order tea and cake. The Moorcock is an excellent example of a former traditional Dales pub that has been ruined by someone’s idea of ‘what people want’. There are some good local bitters on sale and the staff and locals are friendly. As for the layout... there is no focal point, no fireplace. There are occasional sofas and soft chairs (in a pub!). Worst of all are the dubious floral prints (and a Monet FFS!) in a part of the world that oozes great landscapes for photo and paint. The food is straight from a frozen catering pack, but the price reflects this.

Myself and my friend had booked to stay here overnight whilst attempting The Yorkshire three peaks challenge through booking.com. We arrived after a long 5hr drive looking forward to a meal and a bed for the night before an early start.Unfortunately we had missed dinner and the kitchen had closed and they had no record of our booking - absolutely not the fault of the Moorcock and whilst we had a drink they kindly rang around some local hotels to try and get us fixed up with rooms elsewhere. Friendly staff and they were genuinely annoyed for us that this had happened. Although we didn’t stay or eat here we were really impressed with how they pulled out all the stops to ensure we had somewhere to stay. Thank you

We just decided to try it based on the reviews we read. Ordered steak pie and I couldn’t eat it! The pastry was not cooked, there was some watery sauce and no gravy and had no taste at all. The chips were still frozen. We also had sausage and yorkshire pudding. The yorkshire is bland, most probably aunt Bessie from Asda. The sausage not what we were expecting. When I told the staff member she just replied: ‘well, Is one of our best sellers’. No appologies or means of resolution. Would never recommend it. I stayed here for two nights while walking in the Dales. The location is perfect with the Eden valley to the north, and the Three Peaks to the south. Hawes is 15 minutes drive to the east, and Sedbergh 20 minutes to the west. The room I had was simple, spotlessly clean and cosy. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the pub is an excellent place to relax after a day out with comfortable sofas and good Real Ales. The breakfast is excellent and will keep most people going all day. The evening meals are uninspired and on the basic side, the only area for some improvement I'd say. But plenty food options of a higher standard in Hawes.

This is one of my favourite places, stayed here for one night when walking Wainrights Pennine Journey. This time stayed for two nights with our group while doing our challenge walk over Wild Boar Fell. This is a great country pub serving good food and excellent cakes. (Except the cheese cake in the ball shaped class) The bed was clean and comfortable and the shower in our room was fantastic, with a strong jet and enough room. Not one of those telephone box types where you can’t touch your feet. They also have a well stocked bar including four real ales. Comfortable seating in a relaxed atmosphere comes as standard. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and attentive, especially the lady that served our breakfast. I would highly recommend the Moorcock Inn; it would be my first choice if staying in this area.

I was disappointed, after a previous reviewer had stated that here you could possibly get the best Steak Pie. It wasn't even a pie. It was meat in a dish with a lid on. However the lid was a very tasty suit dumpling type mix. The food was pretty good, not a vast range which probably means it is all the fresher. Part of the building is the bar, and part the coffee shop. There is a mixture of tables and chairs and more casual sofas. Didn't try the coffee shop side, but I noticed that they had proper coffee making apparatus and a good range of cakes. the pub side includes all the usual offerings plus I think 4 real ales. there is wheel chair access, but no disabled toilet.

Reasonable menu with meals, sandwiches and snacks, good food, good value, friendly service, eat in or out, car park level inside, but can't avoid steps to get in, least at front door, two but no rail or grab handle. There isn't a lot of Garsdale, which is where the pub is, not Sedbergh, which is 9 miles away, so the fact that it was busy must be due to its location on the approach to Hawes and a junction with the road to Kirby Stephen. It also lies alongside the Settle Carlisle railway line.

I have driven past this Pub many times and have been put off from calling in due to the apparent lack of car parking. However on this occasion we arrived from the direction of Kirby Stephen and discovered at the rear of the premises is a decent sized car park.We arrived late afternoon and having ascertained food is served all day chose Soup as a starter and Steak Pie for main course from the menu. The dining area is spacious and is patrolled by the resident Black Labrador Dog called Coal. After an initial fuss and stroke he wandered off and laid down by the bar.The bar appears to have a good selection of drinks and ales. Unfortunately as I was driving I did not get to sample any of the local brews, Maybe next time. Our food order which was pipping hot arrived and we could not believe the size of the portion. Man size or what!! The food was very tasty and well presented. There were hardly any other customers present when we visited but that was late on a Thursday afternoon in November. I m sure that when the place is full of customers the atmosphere will be buzzing.I cant comment on the accommodation side of things. The washroom facilities were good with hot water on tap.All in all my sister and I were delighted with the service and fare we received. Arrived late Sunday afternoon. The Inn is clean and recently refurbished. Owners and staff are very friendly and welcoming but I am guessing are new to the trade. The local real ales are fantastic and well kept. The pub food is basic fare but the portion sizes are good. There were no other potatoes except 'roasties', but they were deep fried pieces of potato and had never seen an oven. If you have potatoes like that, you can make chips or sautéed potatoes or mash. Soup was leek and potato and was excellent, served with a crusty baguette. Scampi was whole rail and pretty good, peas were perfectly cooked. My dessert was 'Ginger' Sponge and custard, but had no ginger in it. Pretty sure if was 'bought in' treacle sponge and custard which is a one pot serving from frozen and microwaved. Tasted fine. Also ordered 'white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake' which was served in a wine glass with whipped cream as a 'deconstructed' cheesecake. Unfortunately it missed the mark. I think the food will develop with time and a good chef.

Our mains of scampi, chips and peas and steak pie, new potatoes and peas were large portions and very tasty - just what was needed and very good value. I whole-heartedly recommend this inn for its food - it may be plain and simple but it is cooked well and you get good-sized portions and the steak pie was full of large pieces of tender steak with just a crust on top and served on the plate (not in its own (small) dish). I would go back every week for this pie if I lived in the area.

We arrived late on Sat evening to find the place packed to the rafters both inside & out with approx 80 Fell Walkers/ Runners who had just arrived about 30 mins beforehand as well as others eating. We made our way to the bar to book in and were met with the welcoming owner who showed us to our lovely rustic spotless room. He asked if we wanted to eat, brought the menus to our room & told us to come directly to the bar with our order & he would have a table for us which he did within 5 mins. The place was buzzing and within 10 mins we had a lovely meal presented by a very friendly helpful young waitress. We enjoyed our meal & a good nights sleep followed by a magnificent breakfast freshly cooked (could hear the eggs being fried while we ate our cereal) nothing sitting under warming lights here. This was served by Ruth a very friendly efficient lady, assisted by Richard, who was extremely busy but took time to have a chat with everyone while going about her duties. She did have a hiccup with the card machine which was out of her hands as it was the WiFi access was the problem - we have the same problem at home so understood - after all the Inn is in an extremely rural area. We found this place last year & were looking forward to a return visit for the fantastic food & characterful owners. The pub has changed hands and has certainly been cleaned up and altered, but it's lost its unique ambiance. The lovely welcoming fireplace next to the (old position) of the bar has gone and has been replaced by an homogeneous "snack" area. We waited over an hour from ordering to be served our average food with what looked like oven chips & a very badly made vegetarian pie with hard overworked pastry. The staff were pleasant enough but appear to be hampered by having to work with an non functioning iPad instead of a till so when we came to pay the electronic device had crashed so payment couldn't be calculated - until i made the obvious suggestion that we just add it up off the menu. All in all we felt it was a case of style over substance & we certainly won't be returning.

We were staying next door at the Garsdale B & B and this seemed the obvious place to eat every evening. I had read the reviews and they sounded good ! So we ended up eating here 4 nights in all which gave me plenty of opportunity to try out the menu. The menu is quite short to be honest. In all we sampled the Chicken in bacon and mushroom sauce , scampi and chip, steak pie , gammon and Lasagne (which was a special ) .All dishes are served with either chips, new potatoes or roast potatoes and there is a choice of peas or salad. I can honestly say we enjoyed every meal. The Lasagne was particularly good and I think this should be a permanent item on the menu not just a special. The servings are generous and my husband was the only one of us who managed a pudding (blackcurrant crumble) which he said was excellent not overly sweet which he liked. Staff were friendly. Service was a little slow some evenings -funnily enough when they were not busy. Booking is recommended at the weekends as it does get busy. To gain a five star rating ? Add a good curry and maybe a hotpot to the menu and I think this place would be near perfect.

My sister & I visited for a late lunch about 3pm, she had been before when under last management. She was surprised at how much better the inside was, vast changes, clean & bright. They serve food all day so we ordered gammon/chips & home made steak pie/new pots. The food was hot and plentiful, we didn't eat again until 9pm! The home made steak pie was very tasty, compliments to the young chef. The whole pub was very clean, (lovely loos) and the staff very pleasant. We will return.

We had two meals in the Moorcock Inn at Garsdale Head. The beer, in particular 'Black Sheep' was excellent, so I had to have several. Great service, and the food is excellent, proper home cooked 'hearty' meals, and the puddings are superb.Gets booked up early Friday & Saturday evenings in summer, so probably best to book in advance.

Visited this pub twice last week. First visit was for tea and cake at the end of a walk. The cakes on offer all looked delicious and we were told they were made in house. The tea was good and a fill up on the pot was given without question. The atmosphere was good and the staff friendly. We went again on the following evening for a meal. Our B & B landlady had booked us in as she said it was often crowded. On this evening it wasn't over full. Again the staff were pleasant and helpful. The disappointment was the menu. It was very limited with only seven main hot courses. Two of those were 'off', only leaving a choice of 5. There were no specials. The food was well cooked and served but was really very ordinary.

My friend and I were staying at the B and B just along from the pub and went there both the Friday and Saturday night for a meal. All I can say is the food is fantastic, home cooked, comforting hearty deliciousness. The steak and ale pie was delicious and very generous on the person size and the sticky toffee pudding was baked by the chef's gran and was the best I have ever had! Go there, have a five pint of ale and a feast of great, home cooked food and a wonderfully attentive owner. We'll definitely be back- loved it!

First and foremost go with a good appetite as the servings are generous. I had the steak pie on Saturday and Scampi on the Sunday, on both evenings I had the blackcurrant crumble. All were excellent and with a choice of Theakstons and Blacksheep Beer what could be better. I stayed in the single room which is fairly small but comfy and was all that I needed. I would definitely stay again.

I stayed with my family in April 2016 due to visiting family. Our room was generous in size, very clean and had all we needed and more. Tick fluffy clean towels, teas and coffees with the nicest biscuits! Powerful hot shower with soap and shower gel. Travel cot, local information leaflets and a TV (not that we watched it, far better things to do in such a great place). Good was quick, very tasty and generous portions. Puddings were to die for (thanks Harvey!!). Location couldn't be better, lovely dog walk right behind the building passing various waterfalls....so pretty! Ample parking. Run by the nicest family, so friendly and laid back. Will be returning anually without a doubt x

We revisited The Moorcock after 10 years. The host then was a dead ringer for Paul Gambaccini. The new host is an affable Yorkshireman. The Inn's setting reminds me of Wuthering Heights, in the distance there was a farm on the lonely hills but there was no sign of Heathcliffe or Cathy but we did see two lapwings or peewits which are in decline and the mournful cry of a curlew. The grey stone inn with shingle car park and outdoor seating beckons in to a newly refurbished interior, with a modern touch that has kept all the old beams, and exposed some of the original stonework against a duck egg coloured wall. Traditional lighting with a mix of pub tables and comfy chairs, one main bar serving the cosy nook and the posh area with the open fireplace plus another with a decided coffee bar/tea salon feel. We chatted to a local man and the host's family while waiting for our lunch. Our soft prawn and unusually tasty baguettes were good as was the proper salad and ample portion of chips. The hand pumped beer was spot on as was the expresso's and the price. The vittles were as refreshing as was the conversation we had and set us in good stead for our journey. They deserve to do well.

Last night we visited the newly refurbished Moorcock Inn and enjoyed a wonderful meal. The place has been totally transformed from its tired self by new owners Andy, Jo and her 4 sons. They have all made a refreshing change to the building, the first in over 30 years, and serve a wide range of real ales and lovely home cooked food. We both enjoyed a starter and main course, 2 drinks and a good bottle of wine (some of which we took home !), all for less than 50 pounds. They all went out of their way to provide first class service, despite being very busy with customers attending the annual Easter Kirkby Stephen vintage rally. We wish Jo and family all the very best in their new venture, and heartily recommend their business to locals and visitors alike.

I wanted so much to enjoy this place and chose their signature dish. He Yorkshire pudding was burnt offerings and the landlady was by far the rudest woman ever. The staff tried really hard to make us all welcome but their hardwork was outweighed by the terrible attitude of the landlady! We wanted to return but will give it a wide berth I,m afraid

Excellent food - restaurant quality with the homeliness of a good pub. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Haggis, goats cheese stack as a starter is truly delicious - particularly washed down with a couple of decent draft ales. Make sure you book though as there is nowhere else to eat for a couple of miles

Very good food, very reasonably priced. Good range of local beers. Friendly staff. Stunning location. We were staying at the Garsdale Bed and Breakfast next door and The Moorcock Inn was so good that we ate there all three nights of our visit.

We stayed at the B&B next door so booked a table for dinner. The food was lovely and the staff every helpful. We asked if we could take our desserts with us next door so that we could relax in our room with a glass of wine and they made them up and have us cutlery to use (as long as we promised to bring it back the next day).

Arrived without booking and found the Pub extremely busy. A table was found for us and a hearty meal produced and together with a few excellent pints was just the ticket for three weary Walkers. Will definitely call again, Excellent

We were staying in a B&B close by on our way home from our holiday and popped into this lovely dog friendly pub for an evening meal. It turned out to be one of the best meals we have had, the food was amazing, all homemade and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We will be back that way again next year and will definitely be going back for another meal.

Called without booking, we were welcomed and offered a table. The food was beautiful. The three of us ordered guinea fowl in a lovely cream sauce stuffed with haggis and wrapped in bacon. This was served with new potatoes (probably need to order vegatables as I ate my son's salad) and was absolutely wonderful. My husband had Lamb hotpot with spirils of parsnip crisps served with a choice of yorkshire pudding or red cabbage and crusty bread, it was very good. Our son had the cheese burger (homemade ) with thick bacon and lots of grated cheese. The salad this came was was also very good as were the chips. Altogether a great meal in a lovely atmosphere in the middle of stunning open countryside.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

As soon as we walked through the door the staff were welcoming and very attentive. The food was lovely and good value for money. We sat outside which is a great little sun trap for those rare sunny days in the Lake District. We would high recommend and we will definitely be back .

We have been here many times over the years and love it. Dropped in for a drink last week. Wooooah! £9.80 for a Prosecco and a pint of cider shandy is the same price as a pint of cider - about £7. So by that maybe a pint of lemonade is also £7? I’m sure many people stop for a drink while walking in the beautiful lakes but next time we might find another stopping point. Although living in the North East maybe we just have cheaper pubs up here??!!

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
