The Moat House Hotel in Caerphilly

Had a fabulous couple of meals today in the Moat. Steak and chips and a steak and jacket potato. Steak was cooked to perfection how we asked it to be cooked. Plenty of nice chunky chips and jacket potato.. soft potato and a lovely crispy skin. Was a lunchtime visit, lovely ambiance and great service as always.

Nice atmosphere and warm in the winter. Dart board to play on which is a bonus

My Father in law and his friends from the RWF came down for the servicemans independance day breakfast myself and my partner joined them , what a beautiful breakfast ,beautiful atmosphere , a little light old relevant music in the background people telling stories and general chit chat ,amazing rememberence tree to leave those weve lost or left behind little blessing notes ,brilliant way to raise money for an incredible cause whilst recognising those still with us having served and still serving as well as those weve lost. Food fantastic ,service impecable highly recommend . Thank you for a beautiful morning.

Want to say a huge thank you to the lovely staff who worked on the 29th December it was my son’s 18th birthday we had a great time staff was amazing the food we had was stunning. We will be back for another meal.

I found this pub to be a very warm, cosy and welcoming place,myself and my family went for lunch here, I had the prawn jacket potato which I found very delicious, my family really enjoyed there meals to. The staff were really helpful and friendly which was nice 😀 I highly recommend paying a visit to this pub, I know I will be going back for food again 😀 also loved the christmas decorations and the window displays were lovely ❄️🎅

Dog friendly but put us in the bar with every TV blasting football so was very loud at times

We had my granddaughters 18th birthday party here, we had the conservatory for 17 family members, the food was brilliant service even better. Keep going back wouldn't go anywhere else locally, well done 10 out of 10.

Had an amazing family meal here! Would 100% reccomend! Was served by a lovely young lady by the name of Megan, she was a delight and helped us chose what to order as we are all pretty picky aha.

Came in for some food, and a few drinks and it was such a lovely evening out. Megan, the girl behind the bar, was so so helpful and so polite!! She is an absolute credit to the team and we can only hope she serves us on our next visit.

Usually I pop to the pub for a drink with friends or sometimes on my own, you will always find good company either way. Occasionally I also eat at the pub, either in the bar or lounge, and always get a great meal. I’m not one of those that orders the same meal every time, but will change it up. Over everything that I have ordered there has always been a consistency of both the quality of cooking and the timely manner in which it arrives. I do read other comments before leaving a review and have noted a few issues with people and waiting times. I am busy quite a few weeks a night and don’t always have a large window of time in which to eat. The staff are forthcoming with waiting times, generally proactively or certainly if questioned. I would rather know than sit waiting for an unknown period. There have been times, when the pub was very busy, that I was unable to eat but being made aware of the fact allowed me to make timely alternative arrangements and look forward to a meal another night.

Great family friendly local pub. Reasonable priced good food and plenty of choice when it comes to the drinks, including Well kept ales on the hand pulls. Definitely a place to recommend especially with them having all the sports channels available.

We were a family of 12 for our Granddaughter birthday, all the meals came out on time and no problems with any of the meals which were a very mixed selection well done to the kitchen staff

First time to have food here but will definitely return and recommend. Food was lovely and the staff were great, very friendly, helpful and welcoming. Nothing was to much trouble.

Waited nearly an hour for food. It arrived cold. Frozen garden peas would have been warmer than the cooked. Asked for no tomato or mushrooms as allergy to both. Both arrived on serving plate! Being a Marston's pub I really expected better. I wouldn't bother going to this pub again and I wouldn't recommend it either. Very disappointing. Only given the 1 star rating as I couldn't give a half.

14 of us went for a 60th birthday celebration. Food was tasty, service very good and great atmosphere. Between us we tried most of the dishes on menu, all very good. Great place for a big family gathering, plenty of parking too!

Although there is a promotion to win free beer, if customer left a 5* review, I couldn't be tempted. My husbands meal of gammon and chips was good. I drew the short straw of ordering vegetarian chilli. Half the plate was filled with nachos and sour cream. Little chilli to be seen amongst pillau rice. As this is a Marston pub, I would expect food to be comparable with others. Disappointed.

Had a meal last Tuesday with my quiz team. As per usual on a Tuesday night we were served by Joe and it was perfect as always .Love the Pub, always friendly staff ,good atmosphere.

Went with some friends and had Joe as my server. He was amazing and went out of his way to make us comfortable and welcome, nothing we asked was too much

Family get-together at the moathouse on Saturday, as per usual the food was great , service was excellent and everyone had a great time . Been there before as it is my local pub and served by joe who is always excellent and attentive.

I had a meal last Tuesday evening. Joe McCarthy served me, he’s very polite and happy go lucky, with a great sense of humour. I love the friendly atmosphere and it’s clean environment. I’d recommend this pub to anyone.

Lovely food and even caters for gluten free our family all had lovely meals. Jo was super helpful so deserves a mention too!

Been to The Moat House a few times and never disappointed, to day we arrived unknown to us a few minutes late for the kitchen. However the management and staff jumped into action, took our order served the drinks and within minutes our food was served, both fresh and hot. What more can you ask for. 5* every time.

Staff are efficient and friendly. Particularly pleasant and friendly, with attentive service and an easy manner, is young Joseph (Joe) McCarthy. Always pleasant and a key member of an excellent team.

Visited the moat house and was told while ordering drinks there was a 45 minute wait for food, which was fine. By the time I’d sat back down, glazed over the menu and got back up the wait had gone up to 1 hour and 15 minutes without anyone new coming in. Their reason was “theres only 1 chef and about 100 tickets”. Baring in mind there wasn’t 100 people in the restaurant, barely 50 from memory and being a marstons pub its all microwave stuff anyway. Came across like they couldn't be arsed and were trying to coax us into going elsewhere… which we did

We always enjoy our visit to the Moat House, whether for food or a pint, both of which are excellent. Jayand Leanne who run the pub have trained their staff to a high level so that we always receive a warm welcome, excellent customer service, and a4 very nice atmosphere.

We popped into the Moat house around 7.30 on Friday night for a late bite to eat. Even though it was quite busy we had fantastic service from Jamie and the team and they made us feel very welcome. Many thanx.

Best pub in Caerphilly, good atmosphere, sky and tnt sports and probably the best pint of Stella in South Wales. Locals in the bar are friendly enough and free juke box on Fridays and Sundays.

Superb Sunday Lunch. Good choice of meats, with veggie, vegan choices too. Good sized portions of perfectly cooked Turkey and vegetables, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings and Cranberry sauce. Tasty and satisfying meal. All for £9.99 each. Jason and Lianne are friendly and welcoming and the pub had a nice Family and Community feel. Will definitely go again for Lunch.

Went to The Moat for Lunch with my Children and Grandchildren recently. The Service was excellent from the extremely courteous staff. The food was served very quickly and was up to the usual very high standard with all of us really enjoying our meals, even my young Grandchildren finishing their meals. I would recommend The Moat to anyone and we are all looking forward to our next visit.

A welcome back to the old times of this great local pub in recent years. Food is great, ales, a particular favourite of mine, are well kept as are all the beers and the atmosphere is great. Food is a particular bonus, great value and most of all good quality and tasty on a consistent basis. Best of all the zero tolerance attitude to drugs is hard to apply these days, but this is the case in the pub making it a safe place to bring your family. A comment I have heard regularly in the bar amongst friends who these days have children. All in all a place which does its best to be a a welcoming venue with a can do attitude to making your experience a positive one and welcoming to any issues raised in order that they can be resolved.

A group of my old school mates were looking for a venue for a meet up, and food. One booking in town had dropped through and I suggested to meet and eat in the Moat House. All were familiar with the pub but were wary because of they had heard things about the pub from 3-4 years ago. I reassured them that the pub was very different these days having been turned around and improved greatly as I am a regular and have posted the same on here before. The pub is now a great venue for all, including families, with many old faces returning and new faces appearing to enjoy the well kept ales, beers and food. I have read a recent post with some surprise as this is certainly not my experience of the pub in recent times. All my friends enjoyed their time at the pub and very much enjoyed the food served for them. The atmosphere is friendly and warm. The staff do what they can to help your visit go smoothly and if there is a problem will do what they can to resolve any issue they are made aware of. Needless to say the all enjoyed the visit and many have returned to the pub since following their experience.

We are regular visitors to the Moat. Always receive a warm welcome. We had food tonight which was lovely. We had steaks , mixed grill and everything was well cooked and delicious. Thanks to Jay, Leanne and staff for great service. 😊

Waited 2 hours for food. When the food arrived it was of a very poor quality. My mixed grill consisted of ‘ bits ‘ of very small meat. I didn’t even try the chicken breast as it was bone dry just to look at , and the steak was smaller than the size of a standard frozen burger. The sausages actually tasted ok and weren’t dry. Overall the quality and service was non existent! Looks like they’ll just take your food order despite having a pub full of people. It was just chaos in there. My partner ordered her steak to be cooked Medium , but again was way over cooked and non edible. This pub could do so well under the right team / management but it’s being run by people who unfortunately haven’t got the first idea of how to run a food order/ hospitality establishment. Easy pub food menu = delivered very poorly.

I went to the Moat House over the weekend just for drinks with friends. The atmosphere in the pub was excellent and the staff were amazing. I was so happy to see that sky and tnt sports is back in the pub as this has been missed over the years. From experience I can only highly recommend the most house to anyone. It is a great local pub. The food is always amazing too. The pub is a credit to how it’s run by the management and by the team of staff they have. I for on will be going back in the near future and do recommend it to all my friends and family

We were greeted on arrival , seved by the politest young man ,the food was hot and realy tasty , cooked to perfection ,my husband , and my sister and her partner had a very pleasant few hours in the establishment .

Absolutely beautiful food, everything was cooked beautifully & the chef/owner refunded the price of my whole meal as he said there was only half a portion left of my chilli (which was huge) what a fantastic experience, definitely coming back.

Great local with no frills and good value food. Try it…. Clean, tidy and well run if you’re looking for a good meal on the basic side but well prepared and in good friendly surroundings this is a fine place - Nothing fancy but still good value.

Today was the second time that we had lunch at the Moat House. Both times the staff were polite and helpful. Today, my wife had the gammon. Her preference with meat is for it to well cooked. Also, with her being blind, she needed the gammon to be cut up as this makes it easier for her to manage. No problem. The gammon was cooked to her liking and cut up as requested. I had the rump steak. Again cooked as requested. Both the meals were piping hot. In addition, they offer a good range of drinks including cask ale, which is served at the right temperature and appears to be well kept. I had Directors, which is a very nice bitter.

Great little pub , held the wake for my grandfathers funeral here , staff were spot on , food the produced for the wake was fantastic. Would recommend for a meal , a drink or indeed a wake.

My experience was amazing! We had our Christmas get together here and the staff were fantastic and the food was delicious.

The new owners have really turned this place around compared to the previous management. The cask ale choice is perfect and always available, Marston’s menu is really comprehensive but the extra touches are what make the difference. The home made batter using Marston’s Pedigree is brilliant. We visit every week and haven’t had a single bad experience. Would recommend to anyone looking for a really good value for money foodie pub. Biggest problem is deciding what to eat each week! Would give 10 stars if I could.
