Lunch at The Mitre today was amazing as always. We chose from the new Grill menu, which has a vast selection of dishes for all tastes. We had the burger ( with all the extras!!), and the Plaice, both cooked to perfection especially the plaice which was superb. The Mitre always has great food, great atmosphere and great service. Hanna was excellent, happy attentive and recommended our dishes today. Sitting on the decking area in the sun with great food and drinks, great atmosphere and great service. The Mitre is always worth a visit, you will not be dissapointed. Booking recommended, it does get busy!!

Visiting The Mitre is always a fantastic experience and today was no different. We chose from the grill menu, Burger ( with all the trimmings), Plaice, and Dirty Chips!!. The menu has a large variety of dishes for all tastes. Hanna was excellent serving us, and sitting on the deck area in the sun was just the best. We always recommend The Mitre, for first class service, first class atmosphere, first class food. You will never be dissapointed, well worth a visit. Booking is recommended, it does get busy!!

Polite and friendly waitress didn't write anything down so when there were delays we were concerned that items had been forgotten, particularly drinks. Long delays to get drinks when ordered at the table. We weren't the only table nearby to experience that. The Mitre-y Sharer plater was disappointing - good scotch eggs but the other items were nothing to write home about and 'frickles' just shouldn't be a thing. For £30 it felt like quantity over quality - padded by bread and butter. My husband ordered the burger and chips and was bitterly disappointed; apparently it all tasted like it had been prepared yesterday and reheated. He ended up sharing my chicken and ham pie which was actually very nice. I think the place is trying to be fancier than it should and not quite pulling it off. Very unfortunate because we were excited to eat upon reading the menu.

I've had some good pub burgers in my time. This was unfortunately not one of them. The patty was dry, chewy, burnt on the outside and also small. The fries had also either lived under the IR lamp, or been reheated as they looked ok but the texture was bad. I'm really not sure how a pub can mess up fries and a burger this badly. It was close to kitchen closing time, although we arrived at 7:30 and ordered fairly quickly. Everything took a long time so perhaps the kitchen were swamped. All of the service was slow, but friendly. One of the drinks was removed from the bill as an apology (without asking) as acknowledgement that the service had been slow.

Stopped by The Mitre for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. It’s a classic pub with a relaxed, welcoming vibe and friendly staff. I ordered the beer-battered cod and chips, and it was excellent – crispy batter, flaky fish, and perfectly cooked chips. The tartar sauce was homemade and full of flavor, and the portion was generous without being over the top. The view was immense too A great spot for a casual meal and a pint. I’ll definitely come back.

I booked a table for 6 after a funeral. We had a very suitable table to chat and share 'photos and memories. The staff were helpful and friendly. Plenty of choice on the extensive menu and the food very good (including vegan). Thank you.

Although we live a few miles away, we often visit The Mitre in Shaftesbury. The staff are really helpful and professional, they are attentive and friendly. One of the main reasons we visit is for their extensive menu which has something for everyone. The food is delicious and fairly priced, in my opinion! If you are lucky enough to visit on a nice day, it is lovely to sit outside and admire the beautiful Dorset countryside view. There are also many cosy nooks inside for those rainy days. Shaftesbury itself is well with a visit and we find people in the town are amongst the friendliest and kindest we have ever experienced. Always friendly. Think I need to move! ☺️

Great location and food. Well worth a visit.

We visited The Mitre on a very busy Saturday evening. To make matters worse, we reached way before our appointment. But nevertheless, the staff accommodated us and found us a table. This set the tone for the entire evening - the staff grappling with large numbers of patrons and yet asking us every now and then if things were alright. This positively impacted out overall experience. The food was quite good too. All in all, a good pub to visit!

Every month or so, four of us get together for a Sunday pub lunch and try somewhere different each time. Our meal at The Mitre exceeded our expectations so thank you! Three chicken roasts and one trio was one of the best we’ve had in a while. A generous portion, nicely presented and full of flavour. Not fans of the swede and carrot crushed root veg. Love carrots, swede not so (childhood memories) but appreciate it’s all down to personal taste. A relaxed atmosphere inside, helpful and attentive staff and a stunning view from the three tier terrace outside. We will definitely visit again.

Nice view, good food, cozy atmosphere

We were meeting my cousin whose mobility is not good and because we are all unfamiliar with Shaftesbury I was dependent on the “Use Your Local” website to check the Mitre’s facilities. It distinctly states that there is a car park, however on arrival it became obvious that this was not the case. This is misleading as I chose this pub to meet in because of its car park. The service was slow, but when the food arrived it was very good and the young man serving was happy to take our group photo when asked.

Had the lamb shoulder and the new ham scotch egg both were fantastic service was very friendly and attentive as always can't fault these guys recommend anyone too go

You get what you pay for here, not the cheapest of places but the food makes up for that!

Driving back from the New Forest on a windy and wet Sunday evening, choices seemed few and far between. Thankfully Google showed The Mitre was open and more importantly was selling food! We all had a good meal and rest from the weather before the final drive back home.

Excellent food and drink, very friendly and professional staff, incredible location with wonderful views across the rolling Dorset hills. A very warm and inviting pub with plenty of character. Highly recommended.

My food was very nice but my husband's was very small that I gave him a third of my dinner which was very large for me. The menu wasn't exceptional there were too many fish dishes. Our friends shared meal had too much crispy bread which they could barely eat as it was over cooked and there was more of that than the mixture of dishes. Unfortunately we went on an extremely busy evening and because of the closeness of the tables it was extremely noisy and we found we had to shout to be heard and it was extremely difficult to hear what each of us was saying. The service was good considering how busy it was.

We can't thank Jonathan, Jasmine, Annabelle and all staff at The Mitre for their hard work, consideration, service in making our wedding reception a truly wonderful event. Perfect for the 22 of us, food was plentiful, well cooked and presented we could not have asked for anything better. A brilliant way to start our married life...

Although the place was relatively quiet with a few drinkers, we had a superb meal for our special occasion. The food was well cooked and presented. Menu is varied with good choices.

I went for dinner at the Mitre with my Mum. We had a lovely cosy spot and both ordered fish and chips. We both agreed it was the best fish and chips we’d ever had! We loved the trio of dips comprising of curry sauce, mushy peas and tartare sauce. For dessert my mum enjoyed sticky toffee pudding and I had 2 scoops of lovely sorbet. All in all it was a very satisfying experience with a lovely server (Orie) too.

Thank you to the team at The Mitre both on Saturday and Sunday lunch, 15th and 16th Feb 2025. We had two fabulous lunches with the family, and really friendly engaged service from everyone on the team. We can't wait for a return visit in warmer weather to enjoy the terrace and the wonderful view. Thank you all, James

Truly one of the best roasts I’ve ever had with incredibly generous portion sizes. Great service and warm atmosphere in the pub, they even posted my walking boots and hat free of charge back to London that I somehow left there after a very wet walk…Will definitely be returning!

This is a great pub and it saddens us to receive such poor food and service from staff who seemed more interested in chatting to some locals whose dog sat on a chair at the bar. Third time in a row so we won't try food here again. Hope our experience is not typical.

Fantastic visit to the Mitre tonight! The team are absolutely incredible - great steak sandwich and a brilliant pint of Guinness.

Terrible experience. We waited for the dirty plates and napkins of the people who used the table before us to be taken away and they took them after we told them. We got a few appetizers and they were bad. The service was absolutely bad. I do not recommend, never come.

Very expensive so not overly keen on buying a round here but this is where people seem to want to be. Staff are lovely but not so good at remembering who was at the bar first when it's busy

Our first visit to The Mitre in Shaftesbury since Jonathan and his team took over, and we are wondering why we left it so long. A very busy night for New Year's Eve, but you wouldn't have known from the excellent service. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and will be back soon. Meal for 4. Pre-reserved table in the dining room at the rear of the property. Pleasant enough. Our group had 2 specials - Duck breast and Chicken. Duck was slightly tough. Chicken seemed ok. Plenty of use of Christmas ingredients but no problem with this, makes perfect sense. Waitress was helpful enough and checked how our meal was. She was running the whole room both for orders and delivering the food so was kept busy. The duck jus and jus which came with the Kiev seemed a bit congealed - not sure why unless it had been over-reduced. Overall, an OK experience but just feel the drinks and food prices for the meal were slightly over the top (London prices in Dorset).

Had to wait an hour and a half for our food to arrive ... When arrived , the food was all right . The staff was apologetic for the delay ..

Wonderful bustling atmosphere in the bar. A very relaxing sitting in the Restaurant lounge. Staff extremely polite and professional. The food just as amazing as the staff.

We liked the food. Service was okay. Vibes were good. Just one hiccup - we reserved a table for dinner way in advance and were cramped in a small corner while the next table had a bigger group (around 7 persons seated at a 4-person table) just having drinks. Not surprisingly, they were pretty loud in conversing. We were not comfortable with this setting and after a short while, requested to switch to another table. The staff was courteous and helped us look into that. Fortunately there was one spare and more spacious table available in another section of the pub and we were able to better enjoy our dinner eventually. I wish they could be more thoughtful when they were assigning table for guests.

We visit every year around this time. Sadly the food wasn’t to the standard it usually is - there was a bone in my fish pie, my mums burger was so delayed we’d all finished eating by the time it arrived and my sons and dads chips were cold. Staff were friendly, welcoming and as lovely as ever and did help us to reach a solution so we were happy, but it was a bit of a disappointment.

Food was delicious and the pub has a nice atmosphere, would recommend the pasta it was amazing.

We had reserved a table for lunch. We have been a few times before to The Mitre. On this occasion, we were seated at the back of the pub with no-one else in that area until a couple arrived later. We felt a little "out of sight" although the service was good but we didn't get the usual buzz of the atmosphere as on previous visits.

As a family we have just moved back to the area, we arranged a meet up with family, we all had food and drink! Kids burgers were amazing as were our meals. We were served by Annabel (I’m sure that was her name) this visit i believe was her first shift or at least first week, honestly she definitely went above and beyond… very attentive, so friendly and great with our fussy kids! We have been back a few times now and were so pleased on a couple of our visits to see Annabel again! Best of all she remembered us! If I could give more that 5 🌟 for service then I would have! Annabel is a credit to you… if you want a fun atmosphere, wether it’s friends catch ups, date night, or place to take the kids for lunch.. we highly recommend.. bonus will be having Annabel as your waitress! We will be back for Xmas drinks! Thank you Mitre! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We were looking for a noce place to go in shaftesbury and decided to go here, we decided to go for the burgers which were fantastic. Our server was really friendly and made us feel truely valued and welcomed, I believe her name was Rheanna. We loved the place, food and the servoce we got and will definately come back again.

Ruined our day! Ordered Smoked Mackerel pate with toasted rye bread, watercress & pickled fennel - what arrived was a blob of Smoked Mackerel pate on a chunky bit of Sourdough bread smothered with butter making it soft & fatty. Instead of watercress, they had sprinkled chives along with pickled fennel & onions! Firstly the above represents false advertising (You failed to deliver anywhere close to what you advertise on the menu) & secondly after making the server aware, after checking with the kitchen he agreed it was the wrong bread & that watercress was missing (which is what makes or breaks this dish). The management were not prepared to compensate which from my point of view as a past Manager of Hilton & A la carte Manager of a restaurant, amounts to very poor practice & arrogance. I would be worried to try any other food at this establishment based on the Kitchens inability to deliver on such a simple but potentially exquisite dish!

Highly enjoyed experience, first time visiting The Mitre. I have restricted dietary requirements which were handed well. Though I like to see a non-alcoholic gluten & lactose free beer option that’s not a cider. Try dig drop DDH pale or Drop bear beer. Our server Rheanna was excellent and credit to your establishment, the experience should not have been the same without her.

Another return visit to my favourite pub in Shaftesbury.Always a warm welcome beautiful surroundings very cosy this time of year and lovely views in the summer.Enjoyed a Guinness and some nuts which were scooped from a jar into a glass.The dog loves it here to we have eaten here before and cannot fault it.A must visit if your in Shaftesbury.

Lovely food, I had roast pork belly, my partner had roast beef. They were very accommodating to our dog, the Initial service was a little slow to get a drink but it was busy.

A great dog friendly pub, and fantastic Sunday lunch , enjoyable atmosphere and a good selection of beers . The staff were polite friendly and helpful , especially our server , Rheanna , who made a fuss of our dog and made sure we had everything we needed. We look forward to our next visit.

Sadly we had a really poor experience. We came in for a couple of drinks - our standard round of a large glass of wine (Malbec), pint of Peroni and one packet of crisps. Typically we'll pay up to £16 outside of London for this so was I was really disappointed to be presented with a bill for £24.60. The bar staff were indifferent/unconcerned at my amazement. This is a normal pub and the wine was nothing special - you should be able to get a pretty decent generic malbec for £9. I just can't understand why such poor value/high cost. If you are passing through Shaftesbury I would recommend that you ASK FOR THE WINE LIST BEFORE ORDERING (DON'T ASSUME YOU'LL BE GETTING THE CHEAPEST THEY HAVE) or just avoid the place altogether.

Nice and easy to get to and park at, clean, fun and nice and busy. Our booked table was ready a whole hour in advance and table service was warm and attentive. Food was great quality and arrived quickly. Overall a great night, would go again.

A classy establishment completely let down by a completely trash music playlist! Please choose your audience and stick with it; cutting from '23 pop to 80s alternative is sure to piss at least a few people off...

Overall a good night. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere was good and the Mitre is in a fabulous setting, decorated beautifully and has always been the ‘go to’ place when friends visit. On this occasion however, I was disappointed with the food. I’ve had the Mitre Burger before, a hearty, well presented burger served with the most gorgeous, chunky triple cooked chips. Not this time! A regular burger, nothing special, with skinny fries that were no better than those from a super market, the whole meal was very underwhelming for the price!! I don’t mind paying for good food but I felt a bit cheated. My friend had the fish pie, again, very tasty but no veg, just a portion of fish pie presented on a wooded board…I guess that’s why it was £18!! I’m sad to say (and I really am sad because you are all so lovely) I won’t be taking friends there again, you’ve over priced yourselves for what is essentially pub grub…sorry guys! Think you could do better.

Had very basic ham, egg and chips a couple of months ago, and it was lovely. Lovely slices of ham and the basics, crispy chips etc. Today, apparently now called “ham hock” we were served some over cooked bits of hock, which were either fatty or cremated and hidden under the egg. Completely unacceptable unfortunately.

Ideally located close to Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, this place has had a complete face-lift and is a wonderful place to visit. Staff welcoming and helpful, food usually good and great range of drinks, alcoholic and otherwise on offer. The new rear garden is stepped over several levels, with far reaching views to the south of Shaftesbury. On a sunny day, there really aren't many better places to visit!

As a new venture 'locals night' was a great success. A simplified menu that was excellent value for money. Our server Annabel was super friendly, helpful, attentive but never overbearing. A very good idea!

I have been here a few times for food and drinks. Always seems quite busy - good - and some of the staff are excellent. Sometimes a bit hit and miss with the service but overall good, and the garden at the back has some lovely views over the Blackmore Vale. The lower terraces are deceptively spacious, nice place to hang out on a fine summer’s evening especially . 😀

I haven't eaten here so can't comment. But the atmosphere is wonderful. The outside seating has a lovely view over the Dorset countryside. And there are blankets available if you get too cold as the sun goes down.

My Son really enjoyed his food, fish and chips and crumble. My mussels and chips were tasty but there wasn’t enough especially as some mussels were closed. I don’t have a large appetite so unusual for me to feel hungry after a meal. I was given extra mussels and bread which helped. I had my favourite sticky toffee pudding for afters and there wasn’t enough sauce and it was rock hard through the middle. The chef asked to see it and Rhiannon took it to show him. I’m thinking it must have been microwaved?? Would not recommend due to the price point for 2 disappointing course. Rhiannon was great, an asset to the team

You wouldn’t believe the views at the back of this place in the beer garden from walking into it on a Main Street. Unbelievable views! Food was great, perfect. The service was fantastic, all staff seem really happy and very friendly. Blake was fantastic and looked after us throughout the evening. Looking forward to returning!

The best steak and ale pie I've had, the other meal was also very good. Great service and a beautiful venue.

Grea5 pub with a fantastic view

Popped in for a Monday supper and found the Mitre to be welcoming with a nice atmosphere. Food was decent and tasty pub food and the wine was good too. More imaginative vegetarian choices than risotto and burger would be appreciated but the risotto was tasty with nicely cooked courgette and tasty toms on top. Beetroot hummus small plate appetiser was excellent. Would return if in the area.
