We are on holiday in England from the Netherlands, happened to drive past the George Inn, and decided to eat there. Good choice, delicious food and good, friendly service. We went there for dinner for a second time. Once again delicious food, and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Went for Sunday lunch. The food was very nice, but the service was appalling ... the waiting staff all appeared to be teenagers, and seemed absolutely clueless, which is a shame, because they were very friendly. The pub has apparently been taken over, and all the staff are new, but they definitely should have received more training before they were thrown in the deep end. We could hear a few complaints from other tables near us, and they are in danger of losing trade if they don't make improvements.

Popped in for some dinner on a recent visit to the Forest of Dean, really nice old pub exactly what we like serving pub grub, burgers, pasta etc. Staff were really nice and accommodating. Food was plentiful large portions and fairly priced, we weren't disappointed or blown away hence the score, but if we were walking past again we would stop again for lunch or a dink.

The George Inn is a typical country pub/restaurant set in a small village called Aylburton. It serves good, home-made food, the Sunday carvery is particularly comprehensive and tasty. Food prices are very reasonable, as are the drinks. The owner and staff are very friendly and efficient, and cater to all your needs. All in all, a place worth visiting, and which is a place you would want to frequent.

Traumhaft leckeres Essen in netter Atmosphäre.

I stayed here for 2 nights and had two evening meals in the restaurant and well as breakfasts. All the meals were excellent ,and they bore the distinct hallmark of good, sound home cooking. Portion sizes were huge, and my appetite these days is not large, so there was certainly no way I could eat all that I was served, either at dinner or breakfast. There was a real touch of originality to some of the menu, mixed as it was with several standard favourites, and in particular the apple crumble, with a sugary topping, was just amazing. All the food was first class, as was the service. I would highly recommend this venue.

Always go for a meal when visiting the area. Decor is lovely and it looked particularly nice decorated for Christmas. Food excellent, as ever. Scampi and accompaniments delicious. One friend had a burger which was excellent. At a loss at some of the comments on here, but suppose we aren't all the same. Will visit again next April when I'm back in the area. Oh did I mention the chips are perfection!

Stopped here on way back from day out at Forest of Dean on a few weeks back. Hadn't booked but as we arrived early they accommodated us in the restaurant area (only couple tables in small bar area which were taken). Lady behind bar (landlady?) was helpful but didn't come across as overly friendly. Food offerings are standard pub fayre at standard prices. The lasagne was interesting as it possibly had a layer of pesto under the cheese toping which gave it a rather strange taste which might not be to everyone's liking. No homemade garlic bread; just frozen pre cut baguette slices which you can buy in the shop for £1 tray. Chips were very good though! The pub is pretty old and has some lovely exposed wood beams etc which are hidden behind some dubious 'tat' decor which has no obvious connection with a pub or resturant. Can only assume that the owners think it looks more homely. Over all meal was fine but didn't wow us and was what you would expect at the prices charged. The old adage of 'you get what you pay for' springs to mind. Would we visit again? probably not.

I've already written a review under the George Inn title and maybe the review should have gone here instead! TripAdvisor can move it over if they like! (note to TripAdvisor: this is in Aylburton, not Lydney!) Great food, ale, service, the lamb skewers were delicious. They were very happy to make changes to the dishes we chose to meet our tastes. Can't fault it, except to say why not make more area available to diners with well-behaved dogs?

I'm always looking for an good place to have lunch with friends and The George did not disappoint. On entering I noticed that it was extremely clean and well kept. I was served immediately at the bar and although they didn't have what I initially wanted I was presented with numerous alternatives from an extremely friendly and helpful member of staff. On going to the bar a second time the member of staff was on a business call but, without any hesitation, she placed the call on hold to serve me and gave me her full attention. That signals great customer service to me as it placed me at ease knowing that she was not flustered at all by having her call interrupted.

Although we hadn't booked I could see that it was busy but the staff were accommodating and squeezed us in. We had a table for just over an hour, which was ample, and all had the carvery. There was a good choice of meats, all freshly cooked with an excellent selection of vegetables and loads of gravy and sauces and stuff. The food was lovely, particular credit being due for the lovely crispy parsnips. I am used to the greasy soggy efforts elsewhere but these were really top drawer.Service was good and no nonsense. After some years absence I returned to this part of the world on business. I remembered how good this restaurant used to be, so thought I would give it a go and see if it had changed. It had. It was excellent before, and now it is even better.Chicken Tikka bites were my choice for the 'healthy option' starter, they were plentiful and tasty. The seared salmon with couscous was an excellent choice. It was a very good size portion, moist and flavoursome. Didn't have room for desert, but if I did, I would have gone for one of their excellent home made cheesecakes. The prices were all very reasonable, the staff were all happy and friendly, and the decor was pleasant. We booked to eat on a return journey from visiting friends. Had not been in this pub for some years and went because of recommendations. We were pleasantly surprise at the changes to what used to be the lounge and which now incorporates the extended dining restaurant. It is smart and cosy.We were given the table of our choice quickly and the menus and wine list appeared very promptly. The landlady was very welcoming as were the two waitresses and all helpful with descriptions of menu choice. The menu is reasonably priced and quite extensive. I chose the 12oz gammon and was asked if I was happy with pineapple and egg and said I would prefer 2 eggs....no problem1 My wife ordered lasagne with garlic bread. We chose a bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc (there are 2 on the menu) it was very reasonable at £13.50 and was very good. Very passable and would choose again. It was the cheaper of the 2 Chilean Sauvignon. Blancs the other being £14.50.Despite the restaurant being quite busy although it was still early evening the food came within 20 minutes. My meal was superb with just right eggs and a nice piece of gammon and lovely onion rings. The chips were served separately and rank among the best chips ever in a pub!!!! and I eat out A LOT. My wife's lasagne was HUGE with 2 large slices of garlic bread and a side salad. Her comment was "It is just how I like it and really really good. Needless to say she couldn't finish! The chips were so good I overate!!Congratulations to The Millingbrook Restaurant... we will be back

The meat in the burger was clearly reconstituted, the beet root in the salad literally had mould growing on it and the chips were greasy yet underdone - it was stomach turning. You'd expect more from such a well awarded pub. Very disappointing.

My partner and I had planned to eat out for the evening but also decided to combine a night away. The George Inn includes adjacent lodges which were clean, well presented. warm and echoed reviews we had previously read from another site about Customer Service, it is impeccable!! The locals are also very friendly. The food is equally commendable, we both ordered the king prawn starter, cooked in garlic butter and drizzled on top of ciabatta bread and included a balsamic spinach salad, 'heaven on a plate'. For the main, my Partner ordered the burger and was given a choice of stilton or cheddar for inside. For me, it was the chicken with mushroom in a wine madeira sauce both were well presented, succulent and extremely tasty, my hat off to the chef. The full English breakfast was fresh and plentiful, there was also cereals, yogurts, and fresh fruit available. This is an absolutely delightful place to dine and sleep and we would both definitely go back again, thank you for being such wonderful people.

One of my family members booked a meal here , they send me over the menu and I thought that the food would be of similar standard to a pub grub but no I was surprised and wow the food .. The burger was presented in a professional wrap , a little flag and with a well sized portion of chips and salad . the steaks were full minimal fat and cooked to perfection , all of the over food our table sampled was of the same quality Lasanges , steaks , pies , burgers , chicken dishes , gammon lots of homemade feasts and a majority were priced at only £10 a meal , for the size and quality I would of expected a smaller dish that had been reheated. No this wasn't the case at the George , everything was freshly made , the salad was green , veg was fresh etc my review could go on but I would recommend this establishment to friends , family and business colleagues. Rustic location , service with a smile , lovely food and all for a reasonable price ! Thanks the George inn for a pleasant meal

Very pleasant evening meal here- the menu contains a few surprises - so we had a well prepared Prawn and white wine Risotto along with a dish of Baked Hake with Parmesan crust - the Risotto came with a dish of vegetables which were not over cooked and a bread roll ?? - and the Hake came with an Italian style chopped salad and some big chunky fries. Both dishes were freshly made and very tasty and properly presented - quantities were sufficient. The service was great - really happy and friendly responsive girls and the local bitter Butcombe was exceptional. This is a family style restaurant/pub and it was reasonably busy for a Monday evening - there is a welcoming atmosphere overall and it was a very pleasant evening meal experience overall.

We ate here on Saturday afternoon. The staff were very friendly. I had the chicken and chorizo pie and mash potato and this was very tasty. The top of the pie was perfectly cooked and the chicken was well cooked too.The mash potato was creamy and buttery and such a large potion that I could not finish it. My husband had the scampi and chips which he said was nice. The apple crumble was nice and the custard was thick and creamy. Overall very good food, ample parking and reasonably priced.

We had a fantastic meal this evening and would wholly recommend this establishment. The sea bass was a dream to savour, the lasagne was Devine and the fish cake and mozzarella was just superb.

Went for a Saturday night meal with family and was pleasantly surprised. We all ordered different meals - my sister even asked mix and match of different meals, the waitress checked in the kitchen and they were fine with that. So we had a good varied selection on the table, fish, steak and pasta, everybody was very happy with their food; I had a (giant) rump steak and it was fabulous, very generous portion and the Stilton sauce was absolutely delicious. Further to this, the service was great, we had a baby with us and they were very accommodating. Will definitely return.

On a recent visit to the Forest of Dean to visit my father we made the usual trip to Lydney and stopped for a meal at "The George Inn" at Aylburton on the A48. Everything about The George Inn is positive, a spotlessly clean pub serving excellant ales and wines and excellant food. This pub is real value for money with a first class menu to suit everybodys taste. If ever you are driving along the A48 as you leave Lydney in the direction of Chepstow look out for this charming little pub on the right hand side. It has large car park and plenty of seating and is a very warm and cosy place to stop for a lunchtime or evening meal and drink, with excellant staff. My car cannot pass the George Inn without pulling into the carpark.

This was an ideal place to eat following a long journey which was a few steps away from our accommodation. The food was good value and basic pub food. The staff were very good although they were rushed off their feet as it was so busy. The cooked breakfast was good value.

Much too salty. Salty bread, salty beans, salty crust on chicken pie. Hake on a sea of red mush unappealing. Pie a bit too dry. No sign of a Manager. Not impressed and will not return. At least the prices were not outrageous but standard of cooking below par. Good beer.
