Whilst visiting Sunderland for a football match, we were advised to go here to eat. I’m glad the locals think so highly of it. I later saw it was rated about 37 of 43 Italian restaurants on Trip Advisor. Well, all I can say is the others must be bloody good or the average person writing reviews have no tastebuds or wouldn’t know a decent eatery if it kicked their arse! The place was very busy and we’d arrived without a reservation. Not to worry, they just made space when they could so easily have shrugged their shoulders and turned us away. Very reasonable prices and mountains of food. We didn’t even bother with the sweets menu, there was nowhere to fit anything else in! Top notch!

Never go here midweek! My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and decided at the last minute to go out for evening meal.. We arrived at 8.30 without making a reservation. It was a Tuesday so it was reasonably quiet when we got there. It was obvious from being shown to our table and given the menu that we were going to be rushed..... and rushed we were!! In and out in an hour and that was after 3 courses....clearly the staff were in a hurry to get home! Wish they’d just turned us away when we got there and we could have gone somewhere we would have felt more welcome. Won’t be back!!!

Don't know where the previous reviewers have eaten before, but this carvery is possibly one of the worst I've had in a long time. And I can name half a dozen places that are far better St slightly cheaper. The meat well if I hadn't seen the knife in the butchers I would have said he used an ax. This was thrown on the cold plate on top of a stuffing ball(I had beef),I wonder if this guy has heard of sliced & presentation???. Cabbage was left in water, and I couldn't decide which was mashed potatoe or turnip, had both. Meat was dry , veg OK. Restaurant chaos. Won't be going back.

Late birthday lunch with daughter, granddaughter and wife. Not too busy at 2pm so had our pick of tables. Barmaid/waitress was exceptionally pleasant and the food superb. I started with black pudding on creamy mashed potatoes, followed by fish and chips. Both were excellent. Others had meatball sandwich and a shared platter. No complaints here. Try this place, it will surprise you.

Visited last night as a last minute decision with the family as the restaurant was full we were told we could sit in the bar area and still have same food. Fine by us. Ordered 2 of the specials and 2 kids meals. Starters black pudding beautiful - tiger prawns in garlic and white wine was very very greasy almost too buttery didn't enjoy. Then they brought out the kids mains. Both thoroughly enjoyed the pizzas although it seems they use chorizo rather than pepperoni which my daughter found too spicy but not a problem. We waited about another 15mins after the kids had finished their pizzas for our mains to be brought out and then after we finished our mains it was over 30 minutes before anyone cleared our table and asked what desserts we would like. As a result we are expecting a parking ticket through the door for parking in Aldi car park as what we were expecting to be a fairly quick tea turned into almost 2 hours. Food was lovely apart from prawn starter but service in the bar area a real let down!

This bar is quite spacious, pleasant and you can also have your meals in there instead of the restaurant. It has a wide selection of beers, wines and spirits and the staff are very friendly. This bar is easily accessible and is not far from shops and other bars. Well worth popping in for a snack, meal and/or a few drinks.

Me and my partner often go to The Mill/Italian Kitchen as its our local eatery. On this occasion we eat in the bar. My partner got the Chilli Con Carne which is absolutely delicious. i usually always get it!!But on this occasion i got the burger... Big mistake. Im only writing this review because its still got me pi$$ed off.Described as being in a toasted bun - Flattened cheap sesame bun. wasn't even toasted. just seemed stale.Describe as having crisp bacon - Streaky bacon barely cooked. 85% fatDescribed as having a tangy tomato chutney - this is the bit that really pi$$es me off - They served me a pasta sauce as a chutney - I think it was daviola. The main event the burger - basically just minced meat squashed into a ball. no seasoning. Bland and dry. No effort, no pride taken. I really should have said something to the barman. who is top quality may i add. But i was starving, went in straight after work for a feed. We we were in and out within 35 minutes. But usually the place is great. really nice owner and staff01/12/15 @ 18:00

The meals are huge and excellent value, especially the 3 course menu for £12.95. I went with the black pudding for my entrée and the pork belly for my main, followed by the tiramisu to finish, I couldn't fault anything about the food, all dishes were beautifully cooked. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, but be prepared to book as this restaurant gets very busy and noisy, especially when there are quite a number of children in attendance, but well worth a visit.

We also dined with our 22 month old and the waitress suggested that instead of buying a kids portion we just take a little extra from the car very and they would give us a separate little plate. I thought this was a fantastic gesture as they could have easily let us pay for a kids portion. I really appreciated this. After hearing lots of good things about the restaurant , I took my wife here to celebrate our anniversary , the starters were lovely my wife had Mussels & I had some sort of sea food melody salad& that's where the positives ended, for main courses my wife ordered the fillet steak which was tasteless & minuscule , I ordered the belly pork which was stuffed with olives & served on mash, the food itself was well cooked but was drenched in a tomato/olive/herb sauce which just didn't work the sauce killed all other flavours & made the mash feel gritty- but that's not my main beef( excuse the pun) it's the way we were rushed .Our booking was for 18:30 , the table wasn't quite ready so we went to the bar, where about 10 minutes later the waitress came to escort us to the restaurant, were finished & out if the door by 19:30 which totally ruined the special evening.I thought the cost was reasonable, the atmosphere was just right and if anything the staff were far too attentive ( the waiter asked for our order 3 times within what felt like 5 minutes of sitting down )So would I go again, the answer is probably yes - after all, all the positive reviews can't be wrong! However I would be more assertive and not allow the staff to pressure me into rushing the evening - however it won't be for a while & i will look more closely at any recent negative reviews

We had a lovely meal at The Mill on a Thursday evening. We arrived early for our 7.30pm booking so had a drink in the bar whilst we waited for our table. The bar and restaurant were both very busy with a great atmosphere. After a short wait we were escorted to our table and decided to select from the excellent value 3-course meal offer for £12.95. There is a good selection available from the menu. Our starters arrived fairly quickly, we both selected the potato skins and they we're delicious. For mains, my wife select the Chicken with Mushroom Sauce, whilst I chose the Lamb Shank (£3 premium), and both were absolutely beautiful, and the portions were very generous. For dessert, I had the Chocolate Fudge Cake, and it was the best I have had, simply beautiful. My wife does not eat dessert, but you can chose a liqueur instead, so she had a Baileys. In addition to the great food, the staff are wonderful, very friendly and accommodating. Drinks are reasonably priced, not the cheapest but certainly not expensive. The restaurant is clean and well decorated, has a modern feel to it, and plenty parking available.Overall, we will definitely be going back soon!

The main idea is get you seated with a drink and make you wait - the waitress will be with you soon - would you like ANOTHER round of drinks? (while we keep you waiting) she'll not be long just we're busy - 2 tables taken in restaurant. Would you like a third round? - no the 4 of us are so hungry we couldn't wait another 3 hours to get the starter. However, there is barely any choice for vegetarians, and nothing on the 3 course menu list. This is disappointing, When I found a dish that I liked - it also contained tomato, to which I have an allergy. The staff were very accommodating and changed the recipe to suit me. Good service indeed. The barman was attentive, but not over powering. Just right. Looking forward to revisiting and trying the restaurant,

We came for Sunday lunch and from the moment we entered nothing was too much trouble. They parked up my grandsons scooter then made room for my other grandson's trike. There were no tables ready in the restaurant but were asked if we'd like to wait in bar area and they would come and get us in approx. 15 mins but we decided to eat in the bar as this is also a very pleasant area and there were others eating there too. The barman in this side was great, very polite and friendly, stopping to ask how we all were when out collecting glasses. My 4yr old grandson had a 'make your own pizza' which was great fun - and it looked rather tasty too. The adults had the carvery, four meats to choose from with a Yorkshire pudding and a stuffing ball, then helped ourselves to a decent choice of vegetables. Unfortunately when we sat down to eat we all found the food wasn't very hot and I think the green beans are frozen (my daughter and son-in-law have eaten there before and said it wasn't very hot last time either):-( but it was still tasty. When we were leaving the staff were lovely, having a carry on with my grandchildren, even the chef coming out and getting involved. The waitresses had to shimmy around us as we were obviously blocking their way when leaving and we were moving aside saying sorry but they had big genuine smiles saying it's ok and speaking with the grandchildren again. I can't praise the service received and the friendliness of all the staff enough, we came away feeling as if we had just visited friends. The food may not have been perfect but we still had a lovely afternoon. I am looking forward to returning soon to try the Italian menu on an evening. :-)

I think this was my fourth visit to the Mill (or Italian Kitchen if you prefer). It is always good value with a wide variety of meals. There is a separate bar and bar menu, but you can also choose from this in the restaurant. it's also easy to open a bar tab and have this added to the table bill without hassle. The burgers are especially good. It's not the best, or most sophisticated, Italian in Sunderland, but it's good value nonetheless.

Sunday dinner out is a weekly ritual, we have sampled many and in our opinion the best by far is The Mill aka the Italian Kitchen. We always go for the Sunday carvery, you have the choice of Beef , Turkey, Gammon, Pork and my partner's favorite Lamb . After you have your meat, large Yorkshire pudding and stuffing served onto your plate, you can load your plate up with as many delicious veg as you like. The restaurant is very very popular and sometimes you may have to wait in the bar until a table is available. When you enter the restaurant you are always greeted in a very friendly way. The staff are all friendly and polite and the whole building is very clean and modern. Drinks are normal bar prices so our bill which consists of 2 adult carverys and 2 drinks usually comes to about £20.00

I took on board some of the negatives I read before visiting The Mill and I found that it does take a while to get your food, but knowing that its a very small kitchen it became acceptable for the wait. I visited 3 weeks ago as I was in the area and thought I'd check out the menu and atmosphere. I was very happy with both and enjoyed my meal and the feel of the place. I returned last week for my sisters birthday and can only say, I've never enjoyed a night in a restaurant as much for years. They couldnt do enough for you. Even the kitchen staff took time to speak. We will certainly make a return vist. It is very clean with lovely relaxing atmosphere and is very nicely decorated. We all really enjoyed our vist.

Visited here tonight with a couple of my friends as we thought we would try somewhere local. The staff couldn't do enough to help you and we were seated straight away. We all had the two course special which was £6.95, I had the home made minestrone soup which was so delicious and the bowl was full. I that got penne nicolina? which was full of chicken mushrooms pancetta jalapino's, I couldn't eat it all so got the rest to take home. Far too full for a dessert which is usual for me. We will be returning soon, thank you for great food and service. Top marks

This restaurant wouldn't look out of place in any major city centre, it's stylish and comfortable and the staff are very polite and professional. The food was good, we had pizzas which were tasty and very filling. The service was excellent and the atmosphere good even though it was a fairly quiet Wednesday afternoon.Value was excellent. Two pizzas and two pints of soft drink came to around £12! With value like that we will definitely be back.

When it first opened it was very nice with good food, good choice of beers/Ale's and brilliant Sunday lunches. After the first few months it went downhill rapidly.......But...........Now they seem to be under new management and things have really started to pick up again. Food was really nice and new menu is brilliant (Very reasonable priced too). IMO - The only reason it does not get a 5 is the choice of real ale's has dropped - sometimes they don’t have any on at all. If this was changed to having at least 1 or 2 nice ale's on it would be up to a 5/5 and I would be in there more regularly. (It might even get them a spot in the good beer guide).Overall – Very impressed with it at the moment.

Now called 'Italian Kitchen' with a new owner, we were there on the 27th Oct with some friends. The menu has changed and is far improved, service was excellent being attentive but not intrusive. The food was very good, well cooked and presented. It was a bit quiet and that is likely due to potential customers not realising how much better it is under the new management, I hope business improves for them as it does deserve it.

This restaurant was brilliant for the first few months that it was open. However, it has gone down in every way - range of menu available, service, and most improtantly in the standard of the food. You had it and then you blew it - shame!

Our group of six turned up on spec on a Wednesday evening. The bar area was quite busy but the restaurant was quiet. We were able to set up a bar / restaurant tab and so could relax over a drink or two first knowing that everything was going on the one bill.Drinks choice is good and the bar is well set out and furnished. All the staff (and the owner) are friendly and helpful. Our meal was to a high standard and was served quite promptly. We had quite a mix of different items from pizza and pasta through to fish, chicken and duck - all very good. Here's a tip: there is a separate bar menu but meals on that menu can also be served in the restaurant on request.

After reading the reviews before I went. I must say we were pleasantly surprised. Food was good but the service was 1st class. The waitress Stacey was a pleasure to speak to. We were very impressed with her knowlege of food and wine, she recommend mine and my wifes meal and it must say it was devine.

Visited The Mill on a number of occassions since it opened and have never been disappointed. For only £6.99 you are able to choose 2 of 3 roast meats which are beautifully cooked...alongside 5 choices of vegetables and usually roasties and mash...with a lovely Yorkshire pudding. Extremely good value for money....and tastes almost as good as home made. In my book thats very hard to find....so well worth a visit. Never had room to try a dessert but they look very scrummy. I live nearby...sadly a little to near as it's easier to eat out..at a very reasonable price....but not good for the waistline!!!

So disappointed with my visit here, decor is beautiful, wasnt greeted as entered, shown to a table, quite a wait to order.Got a half pizza for starter was like a cracker. Then carbonara for main was as if made with milk so watery and not thick coating pasta, I had it sent back and returning dish wasn't any betterPartners bruschetta was tiny and expensive for what was served. He ordered margarita as it said came with oregano and it came covered in parsleyAlthough staff did change food, second dish wasn't better. As we left no staff even said thank you or goodbye, we left very disappointed and probably wouldn't return unfortunately. This has opportunity to be lovely, the decor and atmosphere are very nice indeed but the service and food let it down.

Having reviewed this as an excellent restaurant a few months ago, I am very disappointed to have returned to the Mill to find it has gone right downhill. My last visits were not long after it had re-opened as a new restaurant and the owner was clearly pulling out all the stops to impress. It now seems complacency has set in and I'm wondering if the chef has moved on. The Gastro menu is no longer available in the main restaurant area (only now in the adjacent pub area) and this is a real shame as it has limited the variety on the menu. We ordered from the mid-week early menu which I accept is cheap....but I would rather pay a pound or two more and have decent food. For starters we had potato skins, which were average. I had a quatro stagioni pizza and it was mushy in the middle....with a suspect looking mushy pepper or swede (I really couldnt tell the difference!!!). The lasagne was very average too. The service was also quite poor.....although only being 6.00pm it seemed the waitress couldnt really be bothered. It was a shame as another waitiress tried hard to be friendly, but the presentation of her colleague left me with an underwhelmed impression of the front of house. My conclusion is The Mill had a good start but they have now stopped making the effort and may pay the price.....customers will vote with their feet in these days of tough competition for Sunderland restaurants. The Mill will need to try harder if it is to survive.

Just visited the mill with my partner. We ate from the £4.95 2 courses menu. We had Potato skins, it was a good portion with a side dish with garlic mayo & We both orderd pasta. Both the dishes again were a good size, nice but very bland. The service wasnt fantastic, at one point the waitress was serving 6 tables alone & food was sitting waiting to go out. At no point did anyone ask if our food was ok or did we want any more drinks. All in all for £4.95 each the food was worth the price but no more really. The decor in the restaurant is nice, relaxed and spacious.

We are a group of 13 friends who meet every month for lunch. Today we visited 'The Mill' and couldn't have chosen a better place. The decor, food, and staff (especially Michael), couldn't have been better. Nothing was too much trouble for him. We shall certainly be going back again.

Visited this restaurant with a group of friends and had a lovely night. I was a little worried about what to expect after reading some of the recent negative reviews but our experience was a positive one. The food was delicious and very good value, both the bar and restaurant areas had a lovely ambience and the service was good though not brilliant. The main niggle was trying to attract staff attention if you wanted to order more drinks or request the bill etc... To us this was only a minor issue and we didn't mind occasionally getting off our bums and getting drinks from the bar ourselves, but others may have found this more bothersome. I would agree with other reviewers that the service was generally attentive without being intrusive. Each to their own but I personally don't like staff fussing around, asking if everythings ok etc... If it wasn't ok I'd say so. I'm pleased we didn't experience this here. I'm looking forward to more visits to The Mill in future.

Went with a group of 12 for lunch. A three couse meal for £5. Amazing value for money. A good choice of menu as long as you like Italian food. Empty plates all round except for those of us who had pizza. They were enormous and only one person managed to eat it all. A more extensive menu is available should you want it and more Briish style pub grub is available in the bar. Well worth a visit.

Used to order at least once a week as loved the food but the last 3/4 times we’ve tried to order we have rang none stop for over half an hour but call fails and comes up “caller busy” as if phone has been taken of the hook. At first we just put it down to them being busy as it often took a while to get through but became ridiculous after a few times. Tried to order tonight and started ringing at 8:05 and rang over 200 times and didn’t manage to get through before they shut. When I messaged last week to ask if they were having issues with their phone they never even bothered to reply. Such a shame as like I say we love the food but don’t think we will bother trying anymore, how they make money to stay open or surprising when they can’t even answer the phone.

Went to martinos seaburn with my family and the owners we obviously in walking around dressed like scruffs and pulling the staff aside every 2 minutes! Staff were doing a great job but the owners made us and other feel uncomfortable the way they were going on. Put us right off and will never be back. Food was spot on just owners thinking they are big time dressed like drug dealers

We use this place (or did) for some time… Got a jacket potato with cheese and beans which came uncooked and a big ball of mess inside tin foil. Rang to speak to staff and was over spoken and told it was fine and she didn’t care if I didn’t like it!!! When I said I would unlikely order again she said “good” and put the phone down!!!! Never again …..
