Called in for a quick drink and maybe some lunch ,found the atmosphere to be a little bit lacking and the drinks where quite expensive , there is a good outdoor seating area overlooking the river we decided not to eat there and left , it was ok but a bit disappointing, we probably wouldn’t go back in a hurry

We came here for drinks, a big group of us. The prices are absolutely ridiculous and put us off ordering any food there. £4.60 for a lemonade?! It's definitely overpriced considering the bar is rather run down and grotty. The lady behind the bar with very short grey hair had a terrible attitude, she could barely bring herself to say please or thank you and is obviously regretting her career choices. My brother's cider tasted disgusting, like it had gone off or the pumps hadn't been cleaned properly. I used to work in a pub and I've never tasted cider like it. Disgusting really for the price we payed. When my brother took it back to the bar, he said to the gentlemen at the bar who he'd been talking to that it's effing awful and the grumpy woman at the bar turned round and scalded him saying "you don't have to swear", I'm not being funny but it was a conversation between grown adults at a licensed bar and the swearing wasn't directed at any body personally. There's a very hostile environment in here. The grey short haired lady at the bar and the mature gentleman working there seem to have a poor attitude - not good enough really for working in hospitality. It just won't do. We went to other bars in Matlock Bath and had no problem - lovely meals and not rip off prices. What a dump.

Nice Position And Good Friendly Pub. Have read some of the previous reviews and l can only comment on our visit today. Really nice warm day, we had lunch, which was very good indeed. The Friendly Staff and the quality and quantity of fresh food was good. When next in or near Matlock Bath, we will call in again. Told us what they had and didn’t have & explained the ordering process! I have gallstones & my partner explained this to the manager/owner & asked if there was anything I could have & she rang the fish shop across the road to do me a steamed fish & they did the rest so I could still eat with my family! I really appreciate this & can’t thank them enough this really did make my 1st Mother’s Day!

The absolute worst service I've ever had in a pub. The two barstaff went out of their way to be as rude and weirdly aggressive as possible. It felt as if they were running the place into the ground on purpose. I thought we might have stumbled on to a hidden camera show. So odd. The beer was over-priced and poorly kept, and that's the best thing I could say about the experience. Matlock has lots of good places to eat and drink. It can do without this version of the Midland.

Two drinks over £10, I think they're charging out of this world prices. Not to mention the miserable expressions coming from the bar staff, if it wasn't already cold outside, their stares would have had me freezing. Went on a very hot day & was looking forward to a cold drink. One J2O & a bottle of Corona cost £9.60. Later on in Tideswell we had the same for £4.70. We did not eat & could see no-one else doing that. It turned out the cook was sitting across from us busy doing something on her phone. Someone came out of the kitchen to tell her the fish (presumably for fish & chips) was still out on the side (in high temperatures & with flies around). She looked cross & said she'd be in later to sort it. She left about 10 minutes later, telling the bar lady she'd be back down later to watch the rugby. It was very warm so the area outside by the river would have tempted us, but there were too many wasps all over Matlock Bath. The outside area looked nice with beautiful barrels of dahlias/chrysanths. Unfortunately it would have been impossible to afford more drinks, we noted someone getting 4 drinks which cost them £30. Unsure why they charge double the price of everywhere else. We would not go again.

Literally the most vile food I’ve ever had. The inside is very dated and the high chairs were covered in old bits of food. I had to wipe the one we used down. Tasteless overcooked processed food. I’m sure this pub would be perfect for Gordon Ramsey to work his magic on. I had soup and it was awful, we ordered kids meal and who knew fish fingers had grey fish inside them. We called in here having some time to kill. My boyfriend and his daughter was already seated with drinks right by the door. I walked in with my face covered with my coat to be told in an angry tone “you need a mask” by this time I was seated where I turned round and she was shaking her head. We was then ignored until my boyfriend asked for my drink. By this point another young man had walked in to be told “sit there!” So he did and he waited for 10 mins until I said he’s better off going down the road, to which the lady then asked what he wanted. Rude staff with no customer services. A poor lady went out with her dress tucked into her underwear to which the manager made it obvious to everyone by pointing and laughing at this poor lady walking up the road, instead of quietly bringing it to her attention. Would never write review of a pub we just called in whilst on walk but honestly this place is dreadful . Looks like it need major deep clean especially the toilets but the main thing was the welcome and staff. These people are in the wrong job. In my opinion I don’t think I’ve ever been in a place with such a slovenly team. They insist u sit by bar whilst they serve u to save them doing any unnecessary walking - most places are doing table service due to Covid - and are so rude they practically bark at you . We also witnessed one staff member rudely speak to a lady who came into meet her husband and was told sit there and she walked to sit with her partner and the barmaid was furious rolling her eyes behind her back at her etc. Unbelievable horrid pub no wonder it was half empty . When we mentioned it to our landlady she said it was well know what a vile place and she wondered if staff were that rude on purpose trying to be the faulty towers of Matlock Bath. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Walk a bit further and go to other pub. Also how is it Covid friendly for every person to have to sit at the condemned table to get there drink so the idle women can just hang round the bar . We did not see it cleaned whilst we were there .

1st June, the day after Bank holiday, half term, gorgeous day. Visited with my wife and son, walked in not greeted, saw a form on a table so filled my name etc. In, manager/owner behind bar still not a word, no other customers inside. I asked if we could get a table outside, he told us to stand over there. We stood against a wall by a door for 20 minutes. A woman then came over and showed us to a table outside and left us. 10 minutes later she came back and we ordered our drinks, BTW, nearly £5 for a pint of Carling is disgusting. However we had a table ina quiet area so decided to have another. When we asked the barmaid she went to ask the manager if we can have another then came to take our order, we were told this is our last one as we are closing! This was 6.30pm on a half term Tuesday, when a few other families that had finished their day out where starting to arrive and turned away. They said they had a really busy Bank Holiday weekend and the staff where tired! This, after reopening after 6 months of lockdown, and they had plenty of staff. Go to the fishpond instead. Fair enough, ask us to put masks on but to be met with pure rudeness and not so much as a hello, there is no need. Walking past the midland we noticed a table available in the sunshine, so decided to stop off and have a pint. The staff were serving other tables and failed to acknowledge us, my husband put his hand up to get a staff members attention after waiting 5 mins. His response was “ do i know you” and walked away. A customer pointed out that we needed to sign in at the front entrance first, maybe the rude staff member could of just explained this, as each pub has a different process. I walked round to the front of the pub and popped my head in and asked if I needed to sign in first, the same staff member said in a rude manner “ yeah if you where your mask” then walked away. I am actually exempt and due to my job i have regular covid tests, the staff member should not assume they everyone is a mask wearer. I then asked another staff member where do i sign in and she said “over there” clearly couldn’t be bothered to be there. I then asked “wheres over there” and she pointed to the conservatory with an attitude. Another staff member walked passed so i asked what happens next now that i have signed in and sat at a table, he said I needed to wait at the entrance to be seated. I got fed up with the staffs couldn’t careless attitude and told the staff member i have been there for over 10 minutes. My husband and I decided the business didn’t not deserve our money/custom and went to the fishpond instead, where the staff greet you upon entry and explain their process before seating you. Maybe the midland could take note. Hospitality has been hit the hardest during this pandemic so the midland need to treat their customers with kindness and respect because without us they won’t survive. I will not be returning to the Midland.

Bar lady extremely rude, heard another member of staff (male) say he couldn't be bothered with food and left someones order to one side. Would not visit again, did plan to stay for food but changed on mind due to terrible service.

Wish we’d read the reviews before our visit as we wouldn’t behave bothered! Bar lady just plain rude. Pub very tired. Great shame as it’s in a perfect location and has such potential.

Beautiful setting by the river, inside pub looks a bit dated, could do with a brighten up, social distancing adhered to, one way system and antibac stations, staff seemed friendly. Didn't have food, just a drink.

Me my children, my friend and my friends child visited this pub while out on a family day. The bar maid was very rude, made sarcastic comments as was unsure on the new protocol due to covid 19, we are not regulars and had never visited before so therefore we had no idea. She was not at all welcoming to visitors and will not be returning with my family, this is a shame because the pub is situated in a lovely spot.

worst pub i have ever been too, we were treated as if we had a disease... the owner looks like a sour trout, the pub stank of cabbage, it was dirty, and lack of safety measures. i have never known a sour faced old woman to be so rude and arrogant, who constantly gives you dirty looks. one of these days someone will end up giving you a slap. if you dont love your business then your obviously in the wrong job. so do everyone a favour and move on.

We visited to have a family pub lunch on a rainy day in half term. There was literally only 2 other families in there. Despite the menu looking OK we walked straight back out. Felt dingy and not very welcoming with a peculiar smell. A shame as its a lovely location but we couldn't face eating in there. Had smashing fish n chips across the road instead.

To the landlord of this pub. Do everyone a favour, sell the place and let someone else have a proper go at running it to it’s full potential. It’s ideal location is absolutely wasted on a bunch of people who have no respect for it or it’s customers. Running it into the ground!

On our visit the pub was very busy, due to the illuminations later that day. Too crowded to eat, so we went outside and had a drink. Good beer garden looking over the river. Nice place for a drink, although staff didnt really seem to be paying attention the job, even though the bar was busy.

Obnoxious staff. Avoid at all costs! There are many many more amazing places to eat & drink in Matlock Bath & Matlock town. In all honesty I've never eaten here so I can't comment on the quality of the food but the staff alone is a good enough reason not to bother!

We visited in October and popped in for food before going to the Matlock illuminations. We ordered food for three adults and two children. Prior to ordering we asked if they offered jacket potatoes and we got a blunt No reply. At the time we ordered it seemed we were the only ones waiting for food and it came out within 15-20 minutes and it was hot, like piping hot. The food was okay. One child’s meal was burger and chips (no beans or anything) and the other child had pizza and chips which was randomly served with peas. Whilst we waited for food what seemed to be a member of staff came from the kitchen with a sandwich and sat at the bar eating it. Staff seem to wear their own clothes and stand behind the bar chatting. There’s signs up explaining the the toilets are for paying customers only but I think the public toilets next door that you have to pay 20p to use are cleaner. As we were leaving we stopped to let a large group of people come in, as they all went past it into the pub to find a seat we overheard the staff ‘who are of these, where have they come from?’ It just seems like they don’t like custom. It’s a shame as the location of the pub on the river is lovely. We wouldn’t return in a hurry and would rather try somewhere else in Matlock next time.

This pub is close to the train station and beside the river derwent. Ok place for a drink if you are at this end of matlock bath. Inside is very dark and dated, with no continuity with chairs and tables. Drinks were not the cheapest around matlock. Couldn't see me eating here.

Visited here for the second time this summer and on both occasions we were met with a warm welcome and a fab sense of humour. We decided to eat here this time and both had roast beef. It was so tender it melted and the gravy was just mmmmmm. Thanks to all the staff for making our visit a special one. We will definitely be back.

32 degrees on Sunday, I wanted a beer! Called in at The Midland. A very warm welcome, bit of banter with the gaffer, nice pint of Peroni by the river. Got everything I wanted in a clean, efficient pub. As for some of the comments on TA, sounds like a different Midland that I was in yesterday! Would certainly go again.

Stopped at the Midland hotel for a bite to eat in the hot sun. Ordered a ham, chicken and mushroom pie with chips the gravy covered the pie but once it uncovered to my shock the pastry was undercooked. The food arrived quickly and was warm and other service was ok not worth writing about. The garden area at the back of the hotel is great with a nice view of the river.

Rude and aggressive staff - clearly missed the Customer Service training. Looking at the other recent reviews, it’s clearly the normal for them. It’s a shame as in a really good spot overlooking the river and next to the station; however they need to get the basics right. :-( #itsnotrocketscience

With a large family group there often is different requirements, ours had a vegetarian. The staff in this pub weren’t accommodating to say the least. Very unhelpful and unfriendly, refusing to cook a vegetarian meal. We took our custom else where, suggest you do to.

Made our children and dog welcome yesterday when we were in need of a break from the rain. Yes, it’s a bit dated but we didn’t want a posh place, our kids aren’t posh!!!! Huge meals, we had pies and they were fab. Kids meals were also big and reasonably priced. Felt relaxed in there.

We called in on Weds yesterday, apart from Fish &Chips; this was the only one that we could find that sold other food at the time,It was a bit empty when we walked in,so was served straight away, and given a menu.I found out that I had to go to the bar again to order and pay before the meal.We had Chicken,Ham &Mushroom; pie with gravy,it wasn't too long to wait. The contents of the pie were a little hard,.in fact the meal was average, the gravy made the meal. The two staff that we met were pretty impartial, always talking to each other and it seemed as though you were in the way,the food was reasonable(what we had)can't comment on the other meals. All in all average.Won't go back,

Went in for a drink. Barmaid was finishing serving another customer. When she had finished we were ignored whilst she ate her lunch which sat on the bar. She then gave the previous customers order to a waitress, who was equally as miserable as the bar maid, then we were served our drinks, which were put down on the bar with some force, she then ate another two mouthfuls of her lunch and asked for the payment!

Having had a pretty awful experience at the Whitworth terrace cafe I came here with my parents for lunch. We had toasted sandwiches which were well made, tasty and well presented with a lovely crunchy salad. The staff were friendly and attentive. I would recommend this cafe to anyone.

Called in for a coffee was very disappointed with the place. It was dirty and scruffy, doesn’t look as though it’s been cleaned in months. The toilet facilities were disgusting as for the food, was this a Bakewell tart as there was no sign of the usual recipe. It was soft the pastry was disgusting I would not recommend this place as they need to close it and give it a good facelift. They also need Gordon Ramsey on the case!!!!!!

Lovely place. People pleasant enough. Ordered some food. Should have taken 20 mins tops. Over an hour later still not had food. It was just a steak sandwich, which it said came with onion chutney. Crispy piece of steak with a few fried onions. Cold chips and onion rings that were sitting in oil. A couple that came in about 45 mins after us received there food first, and that was 2 curry dishes. Was told the steak took longer than the curry????
