The Mermaid Takeaway in Cambridge

Food is awful. Missing food and refusing to bring it. When finally agreed to bring it took 40 mins. Food that was here was cold. Food was soaked in sauces that were spilt. Tbh don’t rate the food at all completely dripping in grease. Staff are useless and just unprofessional and unorganised.

This place doesn't deserve 1star , food uneadible fish dry, dark brown hard chips, spam fritter was all batter apart from a wafer thin piece of spam inside. I called them and told them but very unhelpful, avoid this place !!!!!!

Chips were cold again Got home had to reheat them This has happened on quite a few occasions It's has gone downhill in the last few months for some reason I expected for a response buy seems they don't care Very poor

We just ordered one item and had to wait 45 minutes. Other customers came and waited and got their food before me. They obviously forgot our food. We waited so long that my partner got bitten multiple times by insects. The food was ok but not worth the wait.

My first visit for many years. Fish and chips ordered for five adults, was fab. The fish had nice crispy batter and the chips were cooked perfectly. Efficient, polite and friendly service. Thank you, will definitely be returning!

Been going here for years. Decently priced and the food is great. The cod ribs and chips are the tasty. The Singapore fried rice from the Chinese section is a favourite to.

The lovely lady owner working at the takeaway was friendly with courteous greetings. Got the prawn crackers for free and the food were scrumptious.. I didn’t realised the Singaporean fried rice and chow mien were that spicy. Overall, the quality of the food justifies the bill. I’ll surely be back for more! Hong Kong Chinese food generally suit our tastebuds..

What a disappointment, got the order wrong on the phone, then corrected it only to get totally wrong on delivery. So overall almost cold food and incorrect. Would not recommend this place, it’s gone down hill, nothing like it used to be. Didn’t even offer an apology for getting it wrong.

Honestly best Chinese in Cambridge, the veggie options are incredible + the salt and pepper chips were really good too. Great prices and quality, wouldn't go anywhere else. Cash only, but that's ideal. Friendly staff and had no queries or worries about hygiene. Will definitely order again!

Very good, reasonably priced, tasty food. It's the best Chinese takeaway in Cambridge. I would definitely recommend the vegetarian options. I'm happy to use businesses that only accept cash.

Not been back for a while and takeaway was still excellent. Veggy options were great and bean curd black bean was wonderful. Service was professional and orders are checked before leaving. Chinese chips are typically awful but as part chip shop then salt and pepper chips were also lovely. Takeaway is an indulgence but this was excellent value for money but card payment was not possible and is cash only - which is not a problem for such great prices and generous portions.

Good quality food at a decent price. Only downfall is how long you have to wait for your food to be delivered.

The Mermaid was pretty good. Unfortunately they don't take card, but I was able to send them a bank transfer instead. Odd I know, but it wasn't too much trouble. They gave me the details over the phone. Really great customer service, and they were really nice over the phone. I couldn't resist the Salt and Pepper Munch box. The amount of food is bonkers and it's all tasty stuff. It arrived hot, but fried food in a box can get a bit soggy when it's delivered. I just popped it in the oven and crisped it up really quick. Despite that hiccup it was great. Feed the house for a couple of days actually. The other dishes were the spicy eggplant and one of the steaks. They were both alright. A little sweat for my tastes, but everything was quite well prepared and tasted good. The steak was amazingly tender and delicious even though we didn't like the sauce on it. We'll be trying a different version next time. And that's the key... there will be a next time. I could easily see this becoming our regular takeway. We've just gotta find the dishes that we really like.

The best Chinese takeaway in Cambridgeshire by far. Anybody who says otherwise is clearly being paid by the competitors. Fast, fresh and unbelievably delicious.

Food is usually really good (last night waited a long time and it was quite dry) good value for money and can easily park nearby for collection

Last night we had a Chinese from here.a chicken sushin .but had orderd a beef Sushin .was supposed to be spicey but was that hot burnt all inside of mouth so couldnt be eaten...then a house special chowmein.there was 3 king prawns 1 piece pork 2 pieces beef.2 pieces chicken..the noddles were so over cooked they were all stuck together like big stodge .and that dry it was like cotton wool in your mouth.so couldnt be eaten...we also had 3 spare ribs .but lf you could find some meat on them. They proberly would have been nice..at £1.60 each.disgusting...so in all cost £ 20 .00 and none of it eaterble...l will never use mermaid again....lt was also cold.they said pick up 20 mins.we did in 15 but it must haves left on side.

Pretty standard fair really, interesting concept of a fish and chip shop/Chinese takeaway in the same building but it works so why not? Chinese takeaway prices seem fair but haven't tried food yet. Prices for the fish and chip section are pretty damn good for what you get, decent portion sizes and didn't taste too bad either! Staff are friendly but the language/culture barrier can be tricky. However, would definitely visit again no question.

Bog-standard Chinese takeaway. Good quick service and clearly popular with the locals. Chicken was juicy and tender but the Szechuan sauce was overly sweet, not spicy enough, gloopy and ketchupy. Definitely not traditional, rather tailored to suit the English pallet.

The food is delicious and reasonably priced, but they only take cash.

Once was half decent now doesn't have anything on the menus that's any good with alot of the stuff heated in microwave from frozen, really dirty in the back in food prep areas looks like its never cleaned

Great staff, great food and good location, easy to park or to walk there, the place is a bit small but the staff is very nice, the shop is clean, prices and choices are great, you can enjoy some fried chicken, pork, fish and chips plus a great variety of Asian food. It isn't fine dinning obviously, yet we enjoyed the fish&chips (6.4£ for a L fish & M chips), and the noodle dish that we had (6£), the service was fast and with a smile and they even put the noodles in a container we brought from home in order to safe plastic. Would come back!

Been using this chip shop for 10+ years. To avoid a wait ring your order through it helps a little in speeding up larger orders and the Chinese food from here is great too

Legit best Chinese place in Cambridge (takeaway not restaurant wise). Cheaper than some others and yet better tasting. Plus it has a whole fish and chip side 👍

It seems to have gone downhill since changing hands. The original owners were great and the food was excellent, but the last few visits have been really disappointing. Might have to wait and see if they get their act together.

Awful. Chicken ‘breast’ was nearly all bone and ‘mushy’ peas were full of hard undercooked peas.

Changed hands. New owners clueless. Downgrading. Half the chips were black. Chinese food tasted horrible.

This is our local take away but after our last couple of visits we will be finding somewhere else to go. The quality of the food has gone down hill dramatically. After throwing our chips away uneaten the last few times we thought we'd give it one last chance tonight and wow that was a big mistake. The majority of the chips were green and the few that look ok had actually been reheated so many times they were inedible too. Save your money or go elsewhere

I've enjoyed the food here. A chip shop with real potato chips combined with a Chinese takeaway. Admittedly, I've not had the Chinese takeaway part. It's collection only. It's possible to get chips and ribs, or chips and curry sauce/sweet and sour sauce for a decent price. They also do fried chicken, sausages, pies and drinks. Very happy to get food from here time to time. Friendly staff. Not generic/frozen chips like most other chip shops in Cambridge.

Quick and friwndly service. You can't pay with card, cash only. There is an ATM about 5 minutes away. The food is fine, nothing special, but good enough for takeaway.

Amazing food, in my opinion this is the best take away in Cambridge. The Chips are ALWAYS brilliant and so is the Chinese. Extremely reasonably priced for both the Chinese and chip shop, the cheapest I've found in Cambridge. Really friendly and kind staff. Shame they don't deliver but so worth going to get! Never felt disappointed by their food whatsoever.
