The food taste great and the staff was very kind.

We chose Hakka’s for our wedding anniversary meal, as we wanted something special. We were very pleased with the whole experience. This is a high quality restaurant. Like other high quality restaurants, and in contrast with more mediocre ones, the ingredients are all fresh. This means that the range of what can be ordered depends on what has been bought in. As with other very good restaurants, what makes it first class is the quality of the dishes provided. We had the seafood salt and chilli platter for two to start, the best example of this dish we had ever had. This was followed by two exquisite seafood dishes (one scallop and one prawn), with an egg fried rice that made us realise that even this staple dish can be done better than one is used to.

The best food in Cambridge full stop. Wagu steak and black cod are amazing! Any seafood you want is fresh on the day! Just ring and book.

Though severely hit by the crisis, Hakka Cambridge continues to be the best restaurant in town and one of the best in the United Kingdom. Delicious seafood and fish dishes. Very good quality/price. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Would give 0 stars if I could. Booked a table for Mother’s Day and the restaurant confirmed via email. We came from London to visit my mum for Mother’s Day and upon arriving at the restaurant, we find it closed. I call the owner and the owner said he closed up because he didn’t think we were coming… we were only 5 minutes past the booking time. I said couldn’t you have atleast called to confirm. He said he didn’t have a way to contact me (a lie since he had my email). His reasons for closing up were to save electricity because the cost of living crisis is expensive like his customers aren’t paying to travel to the restaurant.. Would not recommend at all. The worst service I’ve ever had and it was less than a handful of interactions.

We were invited to a unique experience in Cambridge UK - a small, unassuming seafood restaurant. You would never imagine that behind this door, amid simple surroundings, would be such an elegant culinary artist. Our host called and pre-ordered because this is a small restaurant with very high standards. It was like having a persona chef. He went and sourced the seafood personally, a Dorset blue lobster. As we are from Boston, we thought we know lobsters. We were wrong. Cooked to order, with garlic, spring onion, and a certain kind of chili spice, we have never tasted anything like it. My husband is from Sichuan, and *he* was impressed. We were also treated to black cod, again, perfectly textured, and a balancing of all the flavors. We also had green vegetables and rice. The unique thing os the chef/owner is a one-man show. He goes to the fish market on the coast. He cooks. He waits tables himself. He does it all, with aplomb and efficiency. Do not be fooled by the location or the decor. This is extraordinary Chinese seafood cooked by a master. Rush to try this place.

This is my second time eating at Hakka and same as previous the food was perfect. The sizzling beef was a piece of steak, cooked medium rare so it melted in mouth with a tangy home sauce. Likewise the pork belly was just right. But most importantly, the seafood was the star of the show. I ate black cod for the first time here and again this week, it is an incredible fish, rich and unctuous, cooked simply with charred spring onions garlic and ginger the freshness of the fish speaks for itself. Likewise the prawns and lobster were perfect. The work ethic of the restaurateur who is chef, maitre d’ors, and owner is from a different generation. he talked about driving for hours to get the best local sourced fish and knew where all the produce came from. He runs a one man show that no one else could ever pull off. Top marks

Reserve a table for 4 for the family. Best seafood restaurant I have tried in Cambridge and in fact the entire UK based on the number of cities I had been so far (>10). Authentic Asian flavour seafood for those who love Asian food and for those who like spicy food. The seafood was fresh and nicely cooked with the perfect tender and taste. The chef / owner is friendly and kind. Having been a chef at a 5-star hotel previously means that he knows what it takes to cook a delicious seafood dish. Prawns, scallops, soft shell crab, mussels and squids can be cooked in different ways at your liking and they are all wonderfully cooked. What a hidden jewel in a not so visible street. Highly recommended! Book in advance to avoid disappointment as the seafood needs to be purchased by the chef on the day to ensure its freshness and quality! Best Chinese meal we’ve ever had! Don’t be put off by the exterior. The food is exceptional. The proprietor is the cook and waiter. It is like hiring your own personal chef.

We really enjoyed our evening there last friday and we will definitely go again when back in Cambridge next year! The food was fantastic - the best Chinese seafood we have eaten in a long time - superb all cooked from scratch and all very very tasty. Don’t be put off by some of the reviews as it is a one man band , he was very friendly and a great chef - go for it !!

Terrible food coupled with a equally bad service , definitely not a premium chinese restaurant. I found the staff member racist too, rude to us for no reason but friendly to other white customers.

Just went to this restaurant to take my girlfriend on a good night out. We entered asked for a table with only 1 of the 12 tables occupied and the waiter said "were sorry reservation only" there is legit nobody in your resturant. I then called 10 mins later to make a reservation and I was told "were closed for reservations" horrible service.

Absolutely delicious. Every dish was better than the last, and Daniel gave us all his top recommendations – then cooked and served everything from scratch!

I've been here twice now, and it's some of the very best Chinese food that I've had. I think it's important to realise before coming that this restaurant is genuinely one person running the whole show by themselves, front of house and kitchen and everything else. This is an experience of getting food from one dedicated person that obviously really cares about what they make. It's inevitable that you get some rough edges with a restaurant like this, but that should not put you off at all. The food we had was consistently great, one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The drunken fish in wine sauce and sea-spiced oysters stood out as my favourites. It's great quality and it deserves support, I really recommend it.

It’s my fourth time to Hakka, I still remember the last time that I came here, it was more than 5 years ago! The owner and chef Daniel welcomed my friends and I warmly. Customers have to be patient when they come to Hakka, because they need to understand that it’s an one-man-band business, Daniel is in charge of everything, literally everything, from the front house to the kitchen, and everything in between. I have to say Daniel really pays attention to details, the plates that were placed on our table were always warm, and the food, Mama Mia, what more can I say: fan-tas-tic!! I tried the Seafood Platter that I was so impressed the first and second time at Hakka, and this time, it still is my favourite—the nicely seasoned and fried seafood of best quality, you can still taste the freshness of each ingredient used. With a little bit of spicing, which is slightly spicy, but still manageable for me, just brought the whole dish to another level. The Black Cod and the Coconut Prawns are something that I haven’t tried before, so I really had to thank my friends for suggesting these two dishes; the Coconut Prawns are well-seasoned: a little bit South-East Asian or Thai style to be exact, together with the juicy prawns underneath the thin layer of crisp, it’s a pleasant surprise and a combo that you shouldn’t miss out. As for the Black Cod, to be very honest, I am not a big fan of fish, but this saucing that went with the black cod was so on-point, that you would just want to have at least 1 bowl of rice to go with this dish. The fried greens that Daniel’d suggested was a nice balance after having had the previous strong-flavoured dishes; we had a stir-fried Chinese broccoli in Ginger Sauce. What a refreshing dish it was, and it really could help us move on and get ready again for the next dish. My friends and I chatted and chatted, and drank some nice and hot Chinese tea as we waited for the final dish—I suggested the one dish that I tried during my very first visit here, and that’s Sizzling Scallops served on Hot Plate. It was scrumptious and brings back a lot of my good memories when I first visited Cambridge back in 2016. For those of you who happen to come by Cambridge, I can’t think of a better place for you to have an authentic Chinese meal other than Hakka, it’s a must-try!

Only one staff for the entire restaurant. Extremely rude, understaffed, racist service. We were left unattended for 20 minutes (with reservation). Minimum £25/person, cash only. Foods on the menu were not even available. So we had to leave with an empty stomach. I feel disgusted by this place. Hope your business goes well with this attitude.

We visited this restaurant at the beginning of June for our wedding anniversary , my wife has been looking for a good seafood restaurant and saw the good reviews on Tripadvisor. It was a Monday evening , when we arrived there was one other customer in the restaurant,we were welcomed by Daniel who we later found out was the owner , front of house and chef. My wife had checked earlier in the day when booking the table that they had fresh lobster, it appears to be hard to find a restaurant with fresh lobster in Cambridgeshire/ Bedfordshire borders where we live, Daniel confirmed his lobster was fresh and showed us one to show how fresh they were , he said he travels down to the coast to make sure he gets the best that is on offer.to sell in his restaurant.. Daniel cooked the lobster very simply and it was fantastic, best we eaten and we been fortunate to have visited Asia and many seafood restaurants around the world , we also had the seafood platter which was also great. Daniel stopped us ordering anything else as he did not want us to order to much and said he would cook more if we wanted , I did order later beef green pepper and black bean sauce and again the food was great. Yes the service is slow , but everything is freshly cooked , this is not your standard Chinese restaurant, but if you like good seafood do give this place a try , I am certain you will enjoy it

Only the business owner is there, he cooked for us. Slow service and slow cooking. We were over charged. The bill was 425 pounds for a meal of nine people. Definitely bad experience for us

How did this get Travellers Choice? We called in the afternoon it being a Friday and mindful of the rating thought we would need to book a table. Phone was answered “yeh?”, is that the Hakka? “Yeh”, can I book a table for 2 tonight at 7.00pm, “err yeh” . I was a little thrown by the nonchalant attitude and checked he worked there, err yeh was the reply, you don’t seem sure said I. Anyway we called again at 6pm when it was due to open in the hope of speaking to someone else, but was still same guy. We rocked up at 7pm, outside lights not on, a few tables and chairs stacked about but no tables set for dinner. The “waiter” dropped 2 photocopied menus on the table. It’s not set up for dinner, are you not busy, no he said it’s been like this for years. But is the food good I asked, you have a great Tripadvisor rating, he said it’s okay but it would depend on what you are used to! At this point we left. I have no idea what was going on or how they have the rating they do but I would avoid at all costs

I think this joint is on the verge of going out of business. Was around dinner time. Went in party of 4 . 2 Kids not that young. The owner said could not accommodate family because of kids. Turned us away. Got a bit rude even though restaurant was empty. Not even sure why there was an open sign in front. So rude. Obvious this place was probably a one man band. So, I read some of the negative reviews and I get it. Easy to get frustrated with only one guy running the whole place. However, we were impressed by his hard work and (in our opinions) superb cuisine. The crispy lamb appetizer in particular is delicious. If you have just a touch of patience, admire someone with moxie, enjoy unique experiences and tasty food, we recommend you try it. Went to this Chinese restaurant without any expectation. But WOW! Absolutely blown away by the quality of the food, the commitment & dedication & perfectionism of the owner. Wow. Wow. Wow. Hakka is the best restaurant in Cambridge hands down. The food is amazing, it’s very well prepared, you will always get fresh ingredients and Daniel will tailor to your taste. My absolute favorite dish is the kung pao scallops, the sauce is citrusy and vinegary and spicy, it is like no other Kung pao I have ever had. Please order it. My other favorite is salt and chili prawns, they are fresh perfectly crispy and just the right amount of spice! While the food is amazing, best part about Hakka is Daniel, he is unbelievable. He operates his restaurant alone, he does everything from warmly greeting you to making an amazing meal all while of course keeping my Prosecco glass full! Sadly we are going to be moving away from Cambridge but we are already planning to come back just for a “Hakka night”!

If you fancy feeling unwelcomed, this might be the right place for you. The food is decent but it comes late, with unfriendly service, and an expensive bill at the end of the night.

Service is very slow. Only 1 person works in the place. The owner is very stingy. It is incapable of even hiring one employee and paying itself 8 pounds an hour. He takes orders, cooks and serves, but can't keep up with anything. Service is too slow. While ordering, he went to the kitchen twice because the food was cooked on the grill.

Dreadful restaurant avoid at all costs, if I could give it 0 I would. I booked a table turned up and waited 10mins before any staff appeared in the restaurant. When we were sat down by what appeared to be a chef, we were told “have a look at the menu, whilst we get you a table ready”. Looked at the menu and there is a £2 charge if you don’t spend £25 or more “per person” on food and then there is also a mandatory £3.50 service charge. My wife and I looked around other tables were waiting all with empty plates & glasses. We left after 5mins and went down the road for takeaway.

Me and my Wife went in last night for her birthday and what DISAPPOINTMENT it was. We booked a table at 6:45 and when we went in we were waiting for about 5 minutes by the door, then 3 other customers were behind us and the waiter/cheff sat them before us why? After then we got seated and gave us the menu. We were after a mix seafood plate wich is called Hakka Seafood set 38£ per person. We choose a bottle of pinot grigio to drink wich was nice and chilled, after almost 45 minutes I called the waiter/cheff if he could come to take our order? I ask him if they still make the Hakka Seafood and he said No but he could make something similar and we said yes. He said he was going to bring us some tempura calamari and gambas with chilli for our starter we said yes that's fine, and he kept saying no worries i will make something similar to the set Seafood Hakka. After 30 minutes arrived the starters only 1 plate for us to share, so we thought well the mix seafood Hakka must be a big plate. By the time we finish with our starter until he came to clear our table and to bring the main course we wait at least 1 hour and 30 minutes if not more. Finally he came with our main course, no seafood but he brought only one piece of black cod, small tray of scalops, 1 bowl of sticky rice and 1 tray of vegetables, we ate it because we were very hungry, and also was my wife's birthday. By the time we were eating our main course we thought about dessert. But then my wife said I'm not gonna order any dessert or other wise we will wait another hour or more for it. We booked some cinema tickets at 22:15 glad we book for that late. After we ate it we ask for the bill and he came to our table saying he has no paper for the bill, so he decided all together will be 120£. My wife just said just pay for it I Don't want any problems on my birthday. I SAID SERIOUSLY 120£ FOR 1 BOTTLE OF PINOT GRIGIO, 1 STARTER AND 1 MAIN COURSE?? I am sorry to leave one star which I normally won't. The waitor took our order said that he is the only one running the restaurant that night. From waitor to chef to cashier. So, we need to take all the order in one go, which is fine. Then, after we ordered, he told us there are £25 minimum charge per person including children. We went through the menu again and found the clause in first page but the minimum amount is £15 instead. I told the waitor and he said it is inflation but he will let go this time. After one hour wait for the food, it turned out not taste good. In short, you may want to check if they have enough staff when u book. And you are fine with the minimum charge.

Daniel the owner of this restaurant is superhuman, runs a wonderful place with wonderful food. The best Chinese we've ever had! The crispy chilli prawn and Mongolian lamb pancakes to start were sensational, followed by sizzling Cantonese beef and kung pao prawns with egg fried rice. Absolutely no problem with the owner/chef – he was lovely, though the atmosphere isn't exactly buzzing, but we were there for the food!

Met up with family and we couldn't have been made more welcome. The owner was very kind and found out very quickly what the kids liked and made dim sum for them. The main course fish (turbot) was amazing. A truly memorable meal thank you!
