I don't think I will be getting a fish &chips order from here, let's talk about fishcakes sold here. rubbish, a fishcake should be shop made consisting of a slice of potato,fish, topped with another slice of potato dipped in batter and fried,and not the disgusting thing that was served to me which tasted awful . Rubbish.👎 PS you can't beat a poor review.

What a good evening, Emma from the outset made our whole night something special.. Then there was the food, it was well presented and tasty... we followed up with a lovely dessert, apple crumble and coffees to finish...Sue cleared and was most helpful too... We certainly will be back.. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Call for fish n chips too restaurant we were welcomed by a nice waiter who couldn't do enough for us we ordered the mermaid special and when it came too the table we were highly surprised by the size it was like a baby whale to be honest beautifully cooked too perfection when I cut into the fish it just come away in white flakes exactly how fresh fish should do as I'm 60 years old and we used too run one of the best fish and chip shops in Middleton when I was 13 the fish was like eating white fillet steak chips were spot on and the complementary peas bread tea condiments were spot on and would highly recommend trying them .

Poor quality food. Small child portions, and staff that don't have a clue what to do. Very expensive too. I won't be going there anymore 😕

Arrived and parked in disabled bay near disabled entry where it instructs you to ring the bell after waiting for some time we had to walk to the front door. We were then waiting until the only member of staff in sight greeted us and showed to our table , we had to request a move as it was very cold , however it was no warmer and we sat to eat in our coats. The food was ok and we were happy with the service, but the visit was ruined by being so cold! Other diners were also keeping their coats on and I only saw two staff members and none apologised for the lack of heating. Doubt we will be up for a return!

Been a number of times and always enjoyed it, however today it was dire. The waitress who took our order was in an absolutely foul mood and could barely be civil. Afrer waiting about half an hour for our fish,and chips, these were finally delivered to our table but no cutlery and the sides we ordered had to be re-requested and we waited a further 10 minutes for these. The restaurant was also freezing cold and the small heaters dotted about the place made no difference to the temperature. Nobody was interested in whether we had enjoyed our visit or if the food was OK. Sadly I think this place may be living on borrowed time if they don't up their game.

When we arrived at 11.40 the door was locked even it thought it was ment to open at 11.30, when we entered it was freezing, with 3 little heater on the floor. All the table were set up for just 2 people no matter if it was a 2 or a 4 table. After ordering the i was brought a cup for my coffee all 3 cups we had were so cold and a little dirty. The only thing that was good was the food but again we could not eat all of it because half was through the meal went cold and so was tea and coffee. We would have said something but not one server came to check if everything was OK infact they did look like there wanted to be there to serve but just chat with the other servers. Are plates was not clear and we never got the bill we just went to counter and asked to pay. So will not be back again as we can't afford to spend £68 for a meal that will go cold because the building has no heating.

£14 for just a fish is an absolute joke. I also ordered large chips and got the smallest portion ever. No one answered the phone. Horrifically expensive for a chippy.

Recently visited, not as good these days, curry sauce, and bean arrived both cold, fish good , chips very poor, will need to find, a new fish restaurant.

DO NOT COME HERE! Absolutely awful, will never come here again. Arrived at 13:10 for a booking at 13:15 for 7 people. Ordered food and drinks. We had starters which took around 15-20 minutes to arrive, 3 were soup which arrived cold, not even Luke warm, sent them back to wait another 10 minutes for it to arrive back warm, not as hot as it should be. We then asked for more tea and coffee. After 25 minutes and asking 3 times we were served with some luke warm but no coffee and this never arrived. ‘Unlimited tea and coffee’ is complete false advertising. Around 14:10 we finally got our main meals, all of which came with cold, soggy chips which must have been sat a while. Some of the fish was also luck warm like it had been sat for a while. After complaining about the chips the staff brought 4 plates of scolding hot chips out as most of us had finished the fish or sausage so would’ve just ended up with chips to eat alone. Not to mention the scraps which look like they’d been deep fried for hours. The only meal which was edible and acceptable was the gluten free fish and chips which were cooked fresh and piping hot. Overall disgraceful, the young lady serving us was very helpful however as it wasn’t her fault after all. When we asked for some discount off of the bill we had to argue with the male member of staff who claimed because the food was replaced it was fine. He eventually gave a 20% discount. He should have paid us never mind the other way round.

Chips were hard like they had been reheated from yesterday I had ordered a regular chips and got a cone no salt and vinegar well over priced for what you get Will NEVER ORDER FROM HERE AGAIN

Order was missing 3 items. Driver claims he was only given one bag with two items. Restaurant claims they gave driver full order. Have to wait for a refund on the items not received but I’m not sure where this order has gone wrong.

Called in after shopping. A few in enjoying their meals, shown to table near a heater..it was very cold outside and was pleased with this little attention. We ordered two small fish n chips and served by a friendly lady, cups of tea and bread weren't included. Really nice fish a small portion of chips. All together a nice place to eat.

Excellent food and service from start to finish no matter the time of day . Great choice of menu and plenty of seats available. Seating is spread out so it’s comfy spacious and you still get the homely atmosphere and feel for the restaurant. All staff super friendly and polite including the manager who’s turned things around in such a short space of taking management position . Our favourite member of staff is Evie her smile is contagious with such a big personality and always looking smart and trendy . Lots of parking outside including disabled parking/ disabled toilets and wheelchair access. Super funky bar area and ice cream cart too . Wow keep up the amazing work and thank you for making us always feel welcome and being helpful especially with my wife being disabled.

We went with our Mother to the Mermaid for Fish and chips which were amazing , served with a pot of tea, bread and butter and mushy peas, with lovely homemade Tartare Sauce

The heating was broken today, so had to sit and eat with coats on. Service was excellent. Fish a tad dry. But it will not stop me from calling again.

Ramsey would have trouble here! Four front of house staff, clueless. Arrived 5.15pm, left at 6.15pm on a quiet Monday evening, received three out of four starters. A Kitchen Nightmare candidate. I could go on, but do yourself a favour and avoid. Woeful.

I usually get takeaway but decided to dine in with a friend. The food is delicious and can be cooked in vegetable oil if you request it.

Not the best. The service was poor, borderline abysmal. The person who took our order was rude and brutish. We all waited for an hour for our order. The heating wasn't working yet they continued run whixh I think is very risky. Two people stood up and left! Apparently all the fish is the same size (as we were told by a waitress) so don't be fooled to order a large. I won't be going again.

Excellent food we really enjoyed it. It was nice and hot as well.

Delivery was on point but the food was absolutely terrible, overcooked fish wouldn’t even break, not even edible and portions was absolutely tiny. Just to add to the fire they gave the wrong drinks, couldn’t even contact me to tell me they don’t have my drink. Recommend Mother Hubbard. Bigger portions and better quality. Next time please answer your phone to avoid such a bad review

I ordered three fish and only received two but what I did get was lovely it was just that I had guests and there wasn’t enough food.

Our expectations were high, having visited the restaurant twice since the takeover. Our experience today did not live up to those expectations Firstly the temperature was so cool that most of us kept our coats on. Secondly the drinks order was incorrect, but was quickly corrected. Thirdly there was no cup for the tea. We had to ask twice, only to be told “you’ll have to wait, they’re in the dishwasher!” Meanwhile the tea was cooling on the table. There were no side plates for the bread and butter. Also, the chips were cool, but the rest of the meal was hot. The fish was beautifully cooked. The staff were frazzled. 2 serving staff for the whole restaurant was just insufficient. The girls tried hard but it was clear to us that more staff were needed. Where were the management? Nowhere to be seen.

Been for years we went last week and absolutely freezing everyone sat in coats I was that cold I didn't enjoy it, couldn't wait to get back home and straight I shower to warm up heating on etc and eventually warmed up, by hell it was cold in the restraunt part even the people serving was in body warmers GET THE HEATING ON MERMAID, also chips was was thin, small and seems I must have got the scrappy type of chips, Won't be going back again especially in this weather.... 3/10 from me

For £20 we had the smallest portion of large chips i’ve ever seen. The sausage advertised is 2. We’ve got 1. For the price + 1/2 a size of a meal, not happy.

Restaurant review. Today we visited as a business lunch, with 11 visitors from Dussledorf and Sweden who were all keen to try that popular English dish of Fish and Chips! We have been previously and never had issues / a bad meal and this time DID NOT disappoint! Since we have been last the décor has had an uplift which is welcomed! Its clean and more modern, with the introduction of a bar, however we did not take up the alcoholic choices with it been a business lunch. I think that on top of fish and chips would definitely put the visitors to sleep in the afternoons conference! The waiting staff were smartly dressed, polite, efficient and helpful with choices. Music choice was good old Frank Sinatra and the likes, nice and calming/ peaceful to listen to, you often don't hear it all that much these days so was lovely to hum along to. I would say pricing reflects todays astronomical prices for food, however I think when paying so much extra to eat in you should be offered a side of Mushy peas or Curry sauce for free - not £2.50 per pot and all be it a small one at that. Feed back from the Dutch and Swedes was very good and all would definitely try / go again! Even the Mexican tried Mushy peas and enjoyed! We will definitely come here as a company again bringing our visitors from across the seas! Unfortunately I don't have any photos as everyone was keen to tuck in but can confirm it was all beautifully cooked and presented. Thank you Mermaid and its team. Jenny Burnell

Fabulous service from the young making the restaurant, great fish and chips, definitely recommend and worth driving a few miles to eat here.

Missing items tiny potion for the price charged

the curry sauce was flavourless, over cooked fish with soggy batter, soggy chip which seamed to have soaked in fat. very big let down.

Best fish n chips ive had for ages the large chips came in a box and large fish was wrapped up that i then put in box with chips and loved my teacake fish n chip butty.

spacious, airy restaurant, spotlessly clean. Sol (presumably the shift manager or manager) and his friendly but not overbearing staff were great. the fish and chips were lovely, very crispy batter surrounding a large chunky fillet, very well cooked, and very tasty. recommended.

Booked a table last minute to celebrate my daughters 6th birthday. When we arrived the table had been decorated with a pink birthday banner which was a lovely surprise. The food and service were excellent as usual. On the way out, the staff gave my daughter a chocolate bar 😊 thank you for making my daughters birthday extra special.

Food was tasty and our host Emma was brilliant. Her service was A class and super friendly. Definitely wound recommend this place.

Absolutamente mierda entró en 330 hoy tienes pescado y patatas fritas y restos. x 2 £ 18. 00 las patatas fritas eran duras como rocas todo chatarra y afilado (peligro de atragantamiento) lo único que era agradable acerca de estos era los dados el resto se fue en el cubo las patatas fritas deben estar fuera y dentro de la freidora todo el día! No malgastes tu dinero en huesos asquerosos que tus peces no disfrutaron en absoluto

The food was cold,i am fed up with the delivery driver not using there thermal bagsthis is why my food was cold,the chip was cold and hard the fish was more batter than fish

We visited on a Friday lunchtime, and arrived before opening. We Were acknowledged immediately and were let in and shown to our table for a short wait until service started. We ordered two pensioner meals(available from 60 years of age) and the food was delivered promptly and piping hot. We both started with garlic mushroom, which were of a decent portion size and were delicious. We also both chose the regular fish and chips which comes with bread and butter and unlimited tea. The fish was particularly delicious, with lovely flakes of haddock and a perfect light crispy batter. I finished with a fruit crumble and custard, which was also very nice and a huge portion too. The staff were warm and welcoming particularly our server Emma, and the lovely young man who let us in early,and took time to chat as we left. All in all a lovely experience, highly recommended. We will be back .......soon!

Well, this used to be OK but when we went we had to wait because apparently they don't have enough time to clean up so don't have any fish ready within an hour of closing as they are cleaning ready for closing time. Fish obviously red hot but the chips were pale and soggy as well as cold!

We thought the coke was expensive, it was only a can and for £3.50 a bit expensive however the fish and chips were very tasty.

Best fish and chip restaurant by miles! The food is great, served piping hot and perfectly cooked. The vintage special is really good value - not much more than our local takeaway, and a great choice of starters and puddings included. Best of all, the staff - all totally professional and genuinely friendly. Abbie and Emma in particular are brilliant; we've visited a few times now, and they know what we want before we do! Absolutely first class!

Really enjoyed my fish and chips I would recommend them to others you won’t be disappointed.

An over familiar member of staff wasn't a great start and things didn't pick up. The service was slow and when the food arrived several of our party complained about it was cold. Not a great experience and one we won't repeat. Plenty of far better fish restaurants to visit than this one

We went for some lunch today at the restaurant. From the second we walked in we were greeted with the most lovely server, Sol. We were seated promptly at a lovely table. He was amazing with our little girl, and even got her smiling after a nap! He got her an extra small portion (she would not have eaten a full portion even of the kids food, she’s only 9 months) and mine and my partners food was so lovely, nice big portions, the homemade tartar sauce was beautiful, just wow. It was fish&chips with a more luxurious feel. We felt comfortable and looked after. Sol&all the girls behind the bar, bringing us food etc were so welcoming and lovely. We will definitely be back super soon! Thank you :)

Whilst delivery was great We spent £19.04 and order was missing one of the meals.. we only received a regular fish and chips but nothing else £19.04 for a regular fish and chips is disgraceful to say the least have put in a refund with just eat.

Had Take away fish and chips: the chips were white and some were hard. The fish was very small like half a fish. Had to wait a long time for food and staff were nice but overworked.

We are weekly visitors and are always on a very tight turnaround due to dance class commitments. The food is always perfect and every week Emma is an absolute delight. A warm welcome, gets us ordered quickly (she’s memorised our order), and ensuring our food comes out quickly so we are not rushing. All done with a smile and charm. It’s always a pleasure.

I normally don’t leave reviews but on this occasion I need to. The fish was burnt, the batter was black and the Fisk was starting to turn black and the smell of burnt batter was just wrong. I can’t believe you sent it as both fish were burnt.

As a Leeds Lad who now lives down South, I always tell people how good the fish n chips are in Leeds. Not any more! Absolute garbage here now. I should of taken the hint when I passed one of the staff sat on the back doorstep tucking into a Macdonalds on his lunch break! Reasonable portion for the price but threw most of it away

Used to be a regular weekly stop before the acquisition by Mr. Fisher. Shortly after the change in management I took my business elsewhere as I felt the price increases were not merited given the quality of the product. (Price up, portion size and quality down are never a recipe for success!) I was nearby so I thought Id give the Mermaid another try. I had fish and chips and my wife had the scampi. The fish tasted very different to what I expect. Perhaps they've switched to cod here? Haddock is the usual fish around these parts but what put me off the most was the heavy, undercooked batter around the fish. It's not rocket science to do this right... there are plenty of top notch chippies around here that will benefit from the Mermaids lack of quality control. Reading other reviews it seems the consistency is a problem. Pricing is at the higher end too, so I'd recommend looking elsewhere for your chippy tea.

Went to collect my order of a gf fish and a special. Not ready when got there,the fryer couldn't read the order slip and I needed to help him know the special was not gf and the normal size fish was gf. Handover of the order to the lady wrapping it was unfortunately misunderstood. I asked for the gf fish to be placed in the plastic bag so I knew which was which! A couple of hours later I was really ill.I has been given the wrong fish. If you are coeliac then don't buy your gf fish here.

We visited on Tuesday evening my cousin is Gluten free she ordered gluten free fish batter she said it’s the best she’s ever had she travels all over the country so well done Mermaid I had mushy peas I’ve got to say they were as good as my mum use to make we will definitely be back . I ordered £27 worth of food for delivery at approx £7.05 pm, by 7.45 not arrived, & status said delivered, however it was never delivered. Fish shop had received order, and suggested I report the non-delivery to just eat stating 'drive stole order'

Llegamos sobre las 4. 30 el 2 de septiembre Pedimos 2 pescados ligeramente rebozados y patatas fritas pequeñas, no lo hacemos las patatas fritas pequeñas tenían que tener patatas fritas regulares, las patatas fritas eran horribles y el pescado parecía terrible, ciertamente no ligeramente rebozado, la masa era muy crujiente y oscuro como se puede ver en las fotos que he subido, desafiantemente no volverá, podría ser mucho mejor, gran ubicación un montón de comercio de paso, pero necesitan llegar allí primero fish & chips, freír pescado como este se puede entender por qué no está muy ocupado

Brilliant food and environment , fish and chips the best we've had! We all really enjoyed the experience, the grandkids thought the tub and cone ice cream selection was very good Special mention and big thanks to the staff who were great.
