The Mermaid Fish Bar in Waveney

We come this way for a caravan getaway with friends. This is our second visit and we cannot fault the food. The fish is so meaty and delicious, the batter is one of the best we’ve had. Chicken strips were so juicy and tasty 10/10. You’ll be missing out if you don’t come here!

They gave us plenty of time to chose our order which was nice but when it came to paying the man practically snatched the money out of my hand grabbing my thumb in the process. Food was hot and yum however if you want vinegar on your chips, go home and run the tap over them. The vinegar was so watered down you couldn’t even taste it and i put a lot on there.

Good fish and chips. Not too greasy. Atmosphere needs livening up a bit.

Had a delivery ordered fresh chicken filet burger with salad it was amazing very large chicken breast and so tender and tasty best chicken burger I’ve had for a long time beats the restaurants around Lowestoft the chips were also lovely sausage in batter very nice and usually I order fish and that’s always perfect don’t think anyone can beat this restaurant always piping hot when delivered as use there own drivers!

OMG what an amazing fish meal of haddock and chips, I have had fish so many times where you are struggling to finish it due to the amount of fat that has soaked into the fish. This was perfection. Would definitely go again.

Ordered a large Haddock with regular chips. Average fish and chip shop in Lowestoft, chips a little bland and the batter on the fish a little under done, but stodgy on the inside.

Delicious cod, and tasty thick fluffy chips. I had the meal deal which included a drink. Very relaxed atmosphere, no complaints whatsoever. Definitely one of the best if not the best in Lowestoft.

Chips were good, batter on fish and sausage quite soft and very yellow, Staff had nothing about them, very dismissive no atmosphere what so ever..

Myself, my partner and my friend ordered from here last night, the food was delicious! The chips were very well cooked, the fish was lovely. Will definitely be returning!

Ordered tonight for the first time. I am super impressed. The food was nice and hot. Scampi, chips and cod - Cooked to perfection. Nice meal no grease. Will definitely order again. 10/10

We use The Mermaid regularly as enjoy the fish and chips but tonight is the last time due to their terrible customer service ! The food arrived but apparently didn't hear the door , so after waiting over 3 hours, I phoned up and this is what I was told and were taken back to the shop . They wouldn't re deliver them as said they were too busy and wouldn't give me a refund . They said I was welcome to come and collect them ! They had been sitting there by this time over 3 hours so I didn't bother . Will not be using Mermaid again !

Popped in while visiting family. The service was warm and friendly. The food was hot and very tasty. Portions were big.

Chips are burnt and taste horrid and fish is disgusting. Also, when upon calling the restaurant the guy was not helpful at all and laughed on a few occasions finding it funny. Will not be ordering from this place ever again!

After being a happy customer for several months the food latley has been awful wont use again chips were brown no taste looks like cooked in dirty oil

Bought a bag of chips next to Justin Hawkins from The Darkness. Had to be the ultimate Lowestoft chippy experience. Could only have been bettered by Michael Caine passing me a pickled egg.

I absoutley did like this chippy. And it still is a good chippy however recently I've been served pale cold chips. Pale battered sausage. Then been served burnt chips and pots of sauce with out lids. This can't keep happening. We understand that this chippy works hard to deliver. But serving us cold pale burnt chips pots of sauce with out lids can't continue to happen.. Otherwise this still is a good chippy.

DONT BOTHER. The worst fish and chips in my 67 year life.thin small fish in a thick leather like batter half cooked. @£9.50 go else where they cannot be worse

I went here a few years ago and it was ok but it has changed hands since then. It has really gone down hill. The fish and chips were way overpriced and didn't taste good. The batter was this bright yellow colour like it had food colouring. The staff were really unfriendly, and completely messed up our order. Just avoid if you can! There are other much better places.

This place is very expensive.. 2 small fish & one small sausage was £16.. It's not bad food, but I think they make the price up as they go..

I really don't think you can justify paying £3.50 for a large portion of chips and only receiving what appears to be a medium portion. Stay away from this place at all costs. Too expensive and a total rip off off.

Had 2 large cod and chips delivered yesterday. It was AMAZING. Crispy batter on perfectly cooked fish. The chips were lovely. We'll Deffo be back soon!!

This is my usual chip shop but just got beaten by The Cod House in Beccles for great new potato chips and cheaper.

Soggy batter and greasy fish. Delivered with chips in the same box as the soggy greasy fish so completely ruined meal. Won't ever use these guys again. Customer service is dreadful too. Absolutely rank all round.

Come across this place a few month's ago. So far great fish and chips gave trued several otger items and there steak burger is very tasty and they have good portion sizes.

Rubbish, ordered 3 hours in advance and after 4 hours still no delivery. We apparently weren't a priority. Customer service is awful.......don't buy!!!!!

Chips are ok but extortionately expensive and portion size is a joke. Over £2 for 10-15 chips!

After phoning to place my order should of been 2x Meal Deals. £9:60. We were told by the Delivery Driver the cost amount was actually £13:10 oh and he had not been given our drinks. When questioning the increase the driver apologised and said to check in the bag on the New menu as there may have been a price rise. But he'd go and get our drinks and return. This he did but when I pointed out the prices he juand lack of new menu he just explained he was helping out a fily member with the deliveries. It's a shame as "The Mermaid Fish Bar is normally quite good. But a £4 increase in cost of order without explanation won't be getting my business again anytime soon.

A good level of service from the owners. The food quality is very good and the chips are very tasty. This place is a little hidden gem in oulton broad. I would highly recommend going for fish and chips here.

Really lovely chips (hard to get right) , delicious big portions of fish, nice sides like curry sauce etc. We have tried most in Lowestoft, Mermaid is definitely our favourite.

After waiting over 2 hours for food we thought never mind as long as it’s nice and fresh,how wrong was we asked for large haddock we know and they know it wasn’t even a medium plus all food was dry & cold,maybe this was a one with mermaid but we’ll never use again, food & service very very poor

Had these the first night took a little while to arrive but was amazing! Tried to order tonight through there website and were still waiting for our food 2 hours later! Been fobbed off wit excuses to get off the phone no food delivered! Really disappointed!

First time visitors to this chip shop as from out the area. Was recommended by a local and did not disappoint. Massive cod great chips cooked there and then. Friendly staff. Will certainly re vist when back in the area.

First visit to this chippy and not disappointed, the fish portions were huge, the haddock was fresh, flaky and very hot. The chips were not my favourite but not bad. Please work on your chips! They may not be the most important part for some but good chips are worth travelling for. Make them more crispy and golden please! Thank you for your friendly welcome, a bit shy and reserved but smiley and very polite. We will be back, hoping for crispy golden chips!

Got scampi, sausage & chips last night and they were fantastic. Quite possibly the best chips in Lowestoft. Really friendly staff and loads of packing. Just place or order and he calls your number when it's ready. I waited about 5 mins. Well worth a visit.

I booked a delivery for my mum on mother’s day , I gave 6 hours notice but it still arrived 30 mins late , if that’s not frustrating enough it’s the “oh well” attitude I got when I called to chase it up , totally unacceptable 😡😡😡😡 The delivery system is chaos , your better off collecting its slightly less chaotic , nice food sometimes I think is it worth the bother , take away is supposed to take the hassle away not here though ☹️ If I was scoring this on the food it would be 5/5 customer service 1/5 based on that its a 3/5

First time ordering from Mermaid. Picked up, portions were big, food delicious and fresh. Would recommend. Second time used and wasn't as good, one cod was soggy but would try again. Third time tonight and sadly wasn't impressed. No boxes for fish and chips all just wrapped in paper. Batter had funny taste, chips weren't great either. 😐

Been under new management for a while now and still maintaining high standards. Use a little to often really.

Food was greasy and none of us enjoyed it.

We have fish and and chips from the Mermaid every week they are consistently top quality. The fish is always very fresh and the owners take pride in what they serve. Always happy to give you condiments of your choice. They always use really good potatoes to give non greasy chips. They fry fresh and are always busy which to me is a sign of their popularity so am happy to wait, as the waits worth it. .

Had really nice fish and chips today after a nice walk in the park.the staff were really friendly but hands down the best fish and chips in the area. I can’t recommend highly enough.

Freshly cooked for us whilst we waited, piping hot food. Absolutely recommended. Substantial portion for each person.

Bit dissapointed thats delivery is going to be over 40 mins late atleast ring the customer as they may have kids who are waiting to be fed

Terrible just had fish & chips x 2, curry x 2, peas x 4, chips & fish cake, chips peas & gravy.....got back and 2 lots of chips missing and no gravy but still charged ....weather foul so couldn't be bothered going back!!!
