The Mermaid in King's Lynn and West Norfolk

Really disappointed with The Mermaid. Appears to be going downhill, so unreliable with opening hours. Turned up at 6.20 Saturday evening to find it closed. Not what you expect from your local fish and chip bar. Think it’s time to take my money elsewhere

Great fish n chips. Eric's was a 2 hour wait (on the app). Did a search and found these guys. 2 mile drive from Deepdale campsite and they served my delicious cod and chips straight away, and under a tenner! DEEPDALE CAMPERS - this is your go to for an excellent fish supper.

Smallest battered sausage I’ve ever seen!

Was dubious due to last few reviews but seeing as good before that we decided to try - previous poor reviews must have been unlucky as everything was lovely. Small portion of chips was definitely small but all tastes fresh and nice, pleasant staff, reasonable wait for freshly cooked.

Very rude and unhelpful staff. They had run out of fish (seriously). The chips were dark brown (stale oil). Not good.

Closes at 8.30pm. Ordered at 7.50. All the guys did an excellent job keeping the orders going. 15 in front of me, 8 more followed. A pity they couldn't cater for all that arrived, but it's the time taken to complete the orders, that's why some got turned away. Working well beyond 8.30 to get the orders done. Best fish and chips we've had in years. Keep up the good work, and we will definitely see you next year!

Awful fish and chips. Three staff, no customers. Waited for 10 mins whilst they cooked as ordered some kids’ meals so assumed all would be fresh but the chips were brown and soggy and all of it greasy. Chips must have been sitting around for ages. Seriously, don’t bother. Go to the Panda Chinese next door instead.

We had fish and chips from here and I am very sorry to say this was the worst fish chips I have ever had. The chips were dark brown and soggy and tasted awful and the batter on the fish was really tough. The menu selection was also really limited.

Given the recent reviews, and as seasoned chippy goers, we were apprehensive but the fish and chips are fantastic! We had two mini cod and chips - perfect size for a normal appetite and only £5.70. Everything was cooked fresh, batter was thin and crispy, and service was attentive. We shared a pot of curry sauce between two (both of us dipped EVERY chip, to give you an idea of size). Only thing that let it down was the location - perfect if you’re picking up by car, but we walked and sat outside. A little strange to be sat on a garage forecourt eating your chips!

Well ...a few varied reviews over the years ...and the tatoes are now turning (UK understand between new and old tatoes) and usually we share large fish back home in southern midlands as it's like a small ship ... but had to have standard here ...the batter was light and airy ...chips were good and the mushy peas ( northern & midlands culinary delight) were nice ...not too much vinegar ...but a whopping £19 from a venue of a petrol station ..it also has Panda take out and Mace Grocery and it's the first time I have seen this type of multi venue to be honest ...if back home Northants we charged £19 ...we expect free chips for a year 😳 so it's quite expensive ...never the less ..it was filling..well cooked and appetising ...thank you Mermaid 👍

Cooked to order and then eat it outside on the bench (no seating internally) albeit on a garage forecourt. Least there was something to watch! Tasted fresh and was nice and hot, so no complaints.

The worst fish & chips we have had in a very long time, the chips were soggy & had obviously been sitting in the hot cupboard/area for a considerable amount of time sweating away & resembled something like mashed potato, with the fish laying on top, upside down, skin side up, completely inedible & a very disappointing experience indeed, we certainly won’t be going back there again in a hurry.

We placed a large phone order for a family gathering whilst on holiday. The fish and chips are amazing and the order was effortless, thank you. We love the tartare sauce and curry sauce too. Well worth a visit when you are in Burnham Market

This is a fantastic chip shop. Sausage chips, peas and curry sauce which was best I have tasted. Ordered food for six, it was ready on the dot brilliant service. Awesome food.

Amazing fish and chips! We are staying in Burnham Market and decided to have a chippy tea - we chose the Mermaid Chip Shop as it was closest to the accommodation. Definitely among the best fish and chips I have had in a while; the curry sauce was very good too. Food was cooked to order, but the service was quick and efficient. Can't fault this place - highly recommended.

The chips wernt nice at all , all dark brown colour also bread rolls I was asked if I wanted them buttered I said yes I did not expect to see half a packet of hard butter stuck like a lump it was gross. The service was great however I was left hungry on a 20 minute work break.

Our fish and chips were great. Fish was fresh and cooked very well, the chips were also very good. It's popular with locals and the large waiting area was busy and friendly. We had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes, they seem to cook every order from scratch, so the food was great. The home made Tartar sauce was excellent, i recommend trying that.

Been here on many occasions and never been disappointed. Great selection of fish and chip shop mains and sides all cooked to perfection. Homemade curry sauce and whitebait delicious and well worth a try.

Stayed in Burnham Market and walked to the Mermaid for Fish and Chips. Excellent quality and price. Could not resist adding the Whitebait with tartare sauce to our order. Handy location next to petrol station and general store. Very smart set up with only a short wait.

Lovely variety of tasty food on the way back from the seaside. Recommend getting mac and cheese bites on the side with your meal. Whitebait and halloumi was wonderful!

Having visited many times in the past we went for first night of holiday fish and chips last week and I can happily say the standard is as good as ever. Freshly cooked and utterly delicious.

Gorgeous fish and chips and curry sauce. The fish actually tasted of the sea and I can well believe it was swimming about that very morning! Highly recommended

Up from London stayed at the The Railway just next door...After a hard days work needed something decent and quick to eat and I certainly found it Lovely fish even better service and even better battered mars bars. Family run and it shows in the quality!

A bit difficult to find as it is a short distance outside the centre. Quite busy for a weekdays. Food was good quality and the portion size good.

We look forward to our fish and chips from The Mermaid every time we come up here. It has always been delicious but unfortunately this time it was a huge disappointment. The batter was soggy and the fish overcooked and very little of it. Chips did not taste right. Hopefully the next time we are up it will be back to its lovely taste. We will try the fish and chips again

Fish and chips always taste better on a seaside holiday especially when you don't live anywhere near the sea and these didn't disappoint very generous portions even the kids meals. Between us we ordered cod, whitebait and scampi absolutely delicious 😋

Staying locally in the area we thought we would get a local takeaway. Arrived at a garage forecourt where there was a shop in the middle, the fish & chip shop one end and a Chinese takeaway the other. Loads of people hanging about outside only to find out they are waiting for there orders. When I get to the counter they said it was a half hour wait, ok thought about going somewhere else but the time you would have driven etc it wasn’t worth it so waited more like 50 minutes for my name to be called that my order was ready. Luckily it didn’t disappoint and was really tasty and big portions. My tip would be to phone the order through as these are given priority. Also the opening hours aren’t very long and even while we were there they were telling people they had sold out of things so get in early.

Policy on Friday and Saturday is pre book slots ONLY which were all finished by 7.45pm. As others have noted, it’s a bizarre and certainly off putting business model for a chippy. Throngs of disappointed tourists turned away.

Delicious fish and chips. We are extremely happy we had ordered as its Saturday night and it’s pre-orders only. The was fish was perfectly cooked with chips to match.

Phone and collect only on Friday and Saturdays, even outside of Covid lockdown. No passing trade served. Really? What sort of business model is that? No doubt they have some unsold fish at the end of each day that could have been sold. Disappointed.

It was almost two years ago that I came here on a holiday nearby - and was delighted to find battered halloumi on the menu. The generous portions were beautifully cooked. I’m returning soon and will be back!

Fabulous battered halloumi, large portions homemade dips fresh chips...veggie heaven not at all like a chippy high quality, as in restaurant!

When you can actually get served, the fish and chips is good, but the business model/customer service is terrible. Followed the requested “click and collect” model and called up at 6:45pm on a Saturday night, to be told that it’s not possible to do fish and chips before they close at 7:30pm, despite it saying 8:30pm on numerous sites. How can you not prepare fish and chips in 45 minutes? Collection is outside, so no logical reason regarding collection. Otherwise, it’s insane that a fish and chip shop closes at 7:30pm on a Saturday. All in all, awful way to treat your customers and to run a business profitably.

Never consistent with there food

Living in North Norfolk you’re spoiled for choice of great eating places and fish and chips are available everywhere. The guys at The Mermaid have always served me nothing but huge pieces of beautifully cooked fish with perfectly done, slightly crispy chips and never a greasy aftertaste in sight! A local staple.

We always try the fish and chips if we are staying away and Mermaid did not disappoint. Whilst I accept everyone's taste is not the same I don't think you would be dissatisfied the portion or the taste, a decent fish&chips. Nice to see such strict adherence to COVID regs as well.

Called in on our way to our holiday cottage and had a lovely supper. They were abiding by all the guidelines and were very friendly.

We have had fish and chips from the Mermaid many times over the years, but I have to say this time it was the worst ever. Having booked by phone earlier in the day, I joined a queue at the appointed time. This turned out to be a mixture of people who had and hadn’t ordered in advance. Those who hadn’t were told it would be a forty five minute wait. Fair enough. These are difficult times. However, having obtained my order and taken it back to our cottage, we were shocked to find the fish dreadfully overcooked, the batter coated in a strange dust and the chips a soggy mess. This was a huge disappointment and I hope that the owners take note that their reputation will disappear very quickly if they don’t produce top class fare - there is plenty of competition around.

I recently moved a couple of miles from this place and wow how lucky we are to have it on our door step.Everything is always fresh and there are some nice additions on the menu such as beef spring roll and mac n cheese bites.Very friendly service too.Our new no 1!!!

This eatery serves lovely traditional food. Everything tastes home made. The only down side is that it has no Pukka pies during the winter weeks.

We really enjoy here, and go once a week (at least!🤫🤭) friendly staff.. food served lovely and hot n then in a paper bag than plastic so food doesn't sweat .. chips not really greasy as some places it's swimming in it -not here! .. guaranteed youl return! .. Friday's, of course, being 'fish and chip' day , can be a bit of a wait, but the staff do their best.. now have card payment available from £5 which is pretty handy if like myself , and not carrying cash all the time... Recommend scampi!! .. it's proper wholetail scampi, super filling n absolutely deeelish!! .. There is some parking outside and nearby roads that can be parked on if busy .. for on nice sunny days there is a couple of picnic benches out the front although the park is on walking distance if having a stroll and want to eat outside ... Enjoy!!

We had a nice chippy takeaway here last night. Variety of fish options on the menu, burgers, as well as a veg burger option. As far as fish and chips go it was quite good. The fish was a bit more tasty than other fish and chip meals we’ve had elsewhere. Like other chippy places be ready with your order when walking to the counter. There isn’t any inside seating, a couple outdoor seating options. It is attached to a petrol station. Which is a bit odd but somehow makes it more interesting.

If you just feel like a take away then look k no further.... You will find a good selection here of fairly standard take away food you would find in a British fish and chip shop. E went for fish and chips, mushy peas, battered sausage, and curry sauce. The home made tartar sauce was sold out!! There is a choice of large fish, which is what we asked for. And it is a real large portion. Definitely enough for 2. The fish was lovely and fresh, which is what you'd expect from a shop that is as busy as this. For adults filled to the brim for £20, great value.....

We visited on the first evening of our camping trip nearby as no enthusiasm for cooking. It was busy, but worth the wait, lovely fresh cod and a generous portion of chips all for £6.50 each. Menu includes Haloumi chips, whitebait and mac n cheese bites, so plenty of choice.

I think this place must be a local institution - very busy on a Sat evening with many people driving to pick up their food. We were warned there was a 30 min queue. Everyone seemed to accept it and there are some tables outside to sit at. Normal size haddock and chips £6.50. Easy Sat evening !

Absolutely delicious fish and chips...nice crispy batter and no sign of any grease on the chips...you don’t need to go all the way to Eric’s if you’re staying in Burnham Market when this is on your doorstep.

Excellent fish and chips Menu is varied, including whitebait and haloumi. My husband was disappoint that there were no pies on the menu. We both ordered cod and chips. It was superb, nice moist fish with crispy batter and a good portion of chips. Will definitely go again

We were told this would be good for fish and chips, it was excellent. Fish was cooked fresh as we asked for haddock and chips. They have various other food on the menu, very clean and owner happy to chat . Would go there again when we are in Burnham Market again.

Fish and chips at a petrol station. I read some of the mixed reviews and can only speak as we found it. They were delicious. Freshly cooked, excellent thick pieces of beautifully cooked haddock. The batter was light and the chips were plentiful and very hot. Overall delicious and better value than we get at home.

Met up with family whilst staying in Burnham market and after trying local eateries just felt like something simple so fish and chips was the way to go. Haddock is my fish of choice I tend to stay away from chips as I've had mixed servings. Wife and others had chips from here and I must admit they looked lovely and the cod also looked lovely. No grease swimming around in fact all was just the job lovely tasting fish and chips. Only thing I could say was fish were small. So only a 4 star review sorry but besides that couldn't fault them and service was very quick.
