I like the warm friendly atmosphere, and the chilled out background music.... I have not eaten in here yet, but I enjoy a good pint of Guinness, & they deliver that here 👍

This pub may be just a step off the train (so close to Orpington stn) but it has everything each day of the week from poker to music to darts to food to jenga, good prices and great bar staff . Check it out.

Attended a friend's 50th birthday private function tonight and the buffet food was amazing. Best pub buffet I've had. Friendly staff too. First visit to The Maxwell, very impressed.

Really nice pub and great for watching the football. Stayed for a few hours watching the football. Good food, good beers on tap and friendly staff.

Went today for food and drinks the roast dinner was below average brocolli raw potatoes bad quality and not traditional roast potatoes. Cauliflower cheese cold and no one came to check if food was ok. Upon complaining no apology or any attempt to offer a drink or coffee for the issues raised. I asked if I could try a bit of the rose wine which was opened as I wanted to buy the bottle I was told we are not allowed to do that which I have never experienced before. Shame as nicely decorated pub and they show the sports sadly I will not be returning.

Maxwell is fast becoming my favourite pub in and around Orpington. Used to pop in on a daily basis many years ago for a quick pint after work and it was OK then. Since the refurb and new landlord and lady it's much much improved and I can see they going out of their way to make it a community hub what with OAP specials and Kids Breakfast club amongst other things long may it continue.. However the biggest change is they are now dog friendly and even have a pooch menu which is brilliant. Food and beer prices are about average for the area and the atmosphere is very friendly. Well worth the 5*.

I like it here, it's always quiet enough to sit and talk, the staff are lovely and friendly, food is great and everything's a good price! It's never overly crowded even when it's really busy and it's nice to sit outside when it's hot!

I haven’t been here before but I could instantly tell that the recent refurbishment was a marked improvement. Other people were commenting on how amazing it now is. The menu looked superb, although I did not eat. The bar service was swift, really friendly, and helpful about the local area.

Considering The Maxwell has only just recently reopened after refurbishment, we were surprised there was only one barstender on at 6:30pm. It was disappointing that 2 popular draft beers had run out and were not replaced. And to see the bartender and the chef throwing a half filled water bottle in the air to see if it landed on the bar upright was not very professional. Also, our neighbour visited last week for a meal to be told no food was being served due to staff shortage. Not a good start for a pub that's just had a relaunch!

Visited here twice now with my mum both times we’ve been it’s been fantastic, great atmosphere, friendly staff, great drinks and really good vibe. Can’t wait to come back again!

This is a great local pub, really warm and welcoming after it's refurbishment. Dog friendly and kid friendly and a great menu.

Came with friends and had a brilliant Friday night - there was a dj, great atmosphere and friendly and attentive staff. Delicious food which we were warned there might be a wait for as the kitchen was busy, but came really quickly. Excellent night out, we’ll be back.

Newly refurbished, opened 30th March. Very tastefully decorated and very smart. Good prices too. Only sadness is that if you're vegan the only thing to eat on the menu was chips and a mixed salad, very poor for this day and age.

Awful as wouldn’t accept my Id card which is recognised by the government and the bar staff were very rude I don’t recommend this pub to anyone I think it should be shut down for good

Came for a few drinks as it's a stones throw from my friends flat. Really good vibe and friendly staff, the drinks were a great price too. Nice seating area outside with heating but plenty of seating inside too, which has a big TV too for sport.

I have to say I don’t recognise some of the other reviews on here. Went to watch the league cup final. Staff were friendly. Beer was good and the locals were friendly. Will be back.

Great wee spot in Orpington, the staff were accommodating and friendly. They allowed us to keep our bikes inside the pub whilst we watched the football. Good selections of beer on tap as well!

Stopped off for a few drinks after work and received a warm welcome from the bar staff. Class atmosphere with a jukebox and sport games on the TVs, lively customers.The pub was clean and service was fast and efficient, would recommend for friends and families!

We walked to the door below the lovely welcome sign to be grunted at like an ox by a member of staff.We were advised there was no entry here but understandably we did not know this due to lack of signage.After this abrupt meeting we walked to the non-apparent usual entrance for my friend to check us in via track and trace to be barked at by said angry staff member to stop touching the bar- which to our surprise we did not know was forbidden. A “please do not touch the bar” would have done but “HAND OFF BAR” demand seemed inappropriate.After another grunt and groan we left as to be spoken to in this manner was deemed completely unnecessary and completely uncalled for.I was completely upset let down and down right shocked and how another human thought this okay speak to someone like this.Honestly, I hope this gentleman finds his peace with his angst against hospitality and does not rest another guest in this manner.Long and short please do not enter this pub unless prepared to be humiliated and spoken down to.

Just been reading the reviews on here. I am guessing all those slagging The Maxwell arrived already pissed or with a bad attitude. Been popping in occasionally, (not a regular drinker), always found the place very welcoming and service excellent.

An okay pub. Obviously popular with local blokes. Beer was good quality. Sky Sports. I hadn't read the reviews before we went in but can't say we experienced any problems. Service was okay, beer okay, cleanliness okay etc

Good pub but average London prices like £4 plus a pint.

This is by far the best pub in the area - visited on the 25th as they were celebrating Christmas Everyone had a great time with the staff all dressed for the occasion.We were served up plenty of Christmas food for free and a free jukebox played seasonal songs all night

I popped in this pub for a quick drink before the Wembley match as I was early for my invite to a friend's barbecue. I am an 'older' lady on a walker. On my right was an empty long table and, as I have not been in a pub since lockdown began, I wasn't sure of the procedure so I ask him 'shall I sit there'. He said no we have got a football crowd coming in shortly. I said I just wanted a quick drink but he said no we are busy. I started to walk out but as I didn't believe him I went back and told him 'you know, I don't believe you for one minute, I could have gone outside. He told me to F. OFF. Just let me add, I am not some down and out. I am an older lady but I am very clean and smart, just had my hair done, and I have a Harrods bag on my walker. He just did not want to serve me. He is the rudest Manager I have ever known. I urge everyone to stay away from this pub and I hope he goes broke. He doesn't deserve anything better.

Oh my word, never before have I been treated so badly by a staff member. I went here for some birthday drinks with friends before we went up to London and from the moment BEFORE we had even entered the pub we were shouted at by one of the staff that came out of the pub (the bald guy).He had a go at us because we were about to walk through the apparent wrong entrance (even though there was a big sign that said "welcome" above his head) and shouted at my partner and her friend because they asked if they could sit outside, he argued that we needed to come in through the other entrance and sign in (which is fine but how about asking us respectfully!?). We took this one on the chin as it was my birthday we didn't want our day to be ruined, ignored it, and decided to walk in through the other entrance, to which point he came inside and he AGAIN shouted at me before I had even stepped foot inside that my mask wasn't on properly (I just hadn't put it on properly yet because I wasn't inside the building yet). My tolerance was getting lower but I still acted respectfully and ignored it and went inside to sign in.He then gave us all a really dirty look as we walked in as if he did not want us there, felt very hostile and awkward, and he rudely then asked for my name and made a strange gesture to me because he did not know how to spell it (rather than just asking me how). He then screeched at me because I rested my hand on the bar while he was writing and abruptly told me to "get my arm off the bar". At this point, I had enough of how he was treating me and my friends and I just stormed out. We all left disgusted and extremely disappointed. I am all for respecting and abiding by the rules but he was just using it as an excuse to try and scare us out of the pub and let his anger out at someone.I would not recommend this pub to a dog let alone anyone and judging by the other reviews on here he is always like this. I am sorry but this is 2021 and you cannot treat/speak to people like that. This isn't the 1980's where you can just boot someone out of the pub for no reason or because you don't like the look of them, this isn't an episode of Eastenders.I am a very tolerant person and it will take me A LOT to leave a negative review let alone a 1-star review somewhere (this is my first one on TripAdvisor) but this experience took it too far, how dare he speak to my partner and friends like that.I don't usually do the "avoid at all costs!" reviews but that line hits the nail on the head, do not even bother thinking about going to this place!

I've been here a few times just as a meeting places it close to Orpington station. Ordered light snakes and soft drinks. Each time there was a strange atmosphere, it directly come from the very unfriendly and intimidating way the staff act. It is perplexing to say the least. The pub was quite not many people in there. With so many pubs closing, you'd think they would make an effort to Wellcome people. It's hostile to say the least. My friend made more of a point about it and says it's probably a football supporters pub !

Mi compañero vino a este pub con su amigo para tomarse una pinta tranquila y la actitud que recibió del personal fue vergonzosa. Al entrar, se le preguntó por qué no llevaba una máscara y explicó que estaba en la categoría excepto. En este punto, la dama salió bien, debes demostrarlo, muéstrame tu cosita de globo. Luego explicó que lo estaba excepto debido a una ansiedad severa. También explicó que está esperando que su cordón de girasol llegue al correo. Nuevamente le pidieron que lo probara, lo que, según explicó, no puede. El hombre detrás de la barra entonces intervino y le dijo muy groseramente que tenía que irse. Cuando mi compañero trató de explicar su situación de nuevo, repitieron hablar sobre él diciendo que tenía que salir y marcharse. Estoy absolutamente sorprendido por la ignorancia y la mala educación del personal. Entiendo que en el mundo actual se les exige que hagan estas preguntas, pero la forma en que se comportaron fue repugnante. ¡Nunca volveré a este pub y le aconsejaré a la gente que lo evite a toda costa!

Popped in for a quick pint on my way to visit friends. Best pint of Old Speckled Hen I've ever had, perfectly kept and served. Friendly staff. Good social distancing policy in place.

Parece que hay algunas reseñas aquí que dicen falsedades evidentes sobre este maravilloso establecimiento. Un pequeño boozer adecuado que sirve bebidas y aperitivos a precios razonables, así como una comida caliente básica pero decente en ciertos momentos del día. Todo el personal competente y educado. Soy un habitual aquí y rara vez siento la necesidad de ir a otro lado cuando me apetece una pinta o 3. Siempre obtenga un cristal limpio. Ciertas cervezas a precios de happy hour hasta cierto momento en la noche de la semana. Buena clientela también No he visto ningún problema aquí desde que comencé a venir aquí hace varios años. Dardos también con marcador electrónico. También están felices de atender pequeñas fiestas / funciones con reserva previa y organizar música en vivo con regularidad. Un pequeño pub excelente en todos los sentidos en mi opinión.
