The Massala in Middlesbrough

My first visit. Ordered keema madras and keema rice for takeout. Food was ready on time for collection and was delicious. Worth every penny at just over ten quid.

Truly excellent experience from the moment you walk through the door. Tradtional service. Fabulous food. Look after with a very warm welcome

Best place to go. Very welcoming lovely food. Not only that they don't pester you for drinks and don't have to wait long for food. In which is served hot and looks fresh. You get a lot of meat in your portion. And if your fussed about wine they are reasonably priced to wash it down with. Look our for early birds and meal deals. I would definitely recommend going there again.

Good food but rude manager may be.shouting at a young waiter all the times in his language and people understand how he was treating the young waiter the waiter feel so ashamed in front of customer.not nice to treat your staff like that.poor little man feel so embarrassed and being bullied and abused from that manager.i understand everything that the manager telling the young waiter in Hindu word ( kamchar).you need to finish your work before you go home at 10pm. Poor young waiter didn't say anyword.management should improve not to bully staff.i have a son same age like the young waiter which really hurt me and I couldn't enjoy my meal after seen that bully.

Great venue, fantastic food, table service from Saj was excellent. Have eaten there on a number of occasions and have always enjoyed the meals.

Excellent value for money we regularly use it for takeaways but tonight we dined in excellent service food Lamb Korai and Chicken Madras we’re lovely but the Nan bread are outstanding definitely the best Indian in the area

Went for the first time recently on a Thursday where they have a deal on for £15.50. This includes a poppadom each with sharing pickles. A starter each. A main, rice, naan and a coffee/tea or small baileys. Can't grumble for that price and they are flexible if you want something different from that particular menu. I have to say the lime pickle is the best I have ever tasted and the service was prompt and efficient. Small venue but genuinely no complaints. Food was really nice. They get lots of takeaway orders as the delivery man goes out constantly but at no point did I feel put off. I will go back and we need to keep supporting gems like these.

After reading the reviews we were expecting something quite special or at least above average. I'm afraid we were disappointed. The service was exceptionally slow and most of the staff seemed like they were too rushed to be dealing with us! Showing almost agitation and impatients when they took our orders. The food was not the worst we have had but it was most definitely not anything special. The dishes we had lacked depth of flavour and we're on the whole made with the same generic base sauce and just changed slightly to facilitate a different description of the dish. The restaurant was not busy at all and yet we waited a long time to be served our dishes. I can only assume that they were exceptionaly busy with take away and collection orders but that should never be allowed to impact the experience of dining in the resteraunt. Overall this was a disappointing dining experience in all aspects.

Just moved to Middlesbrough from the South West, and fist thing we needed to do was find a 'Go To' Curry House. After a handful of painfully average curries we decided to give The Massala a try. 5*. Was served by the Gentleman who we believe is the owner. Gave recommendations, and he couldn't had been more correct. We're also vegan so it wasn't an easy task! Can't wait to go back.

First visit & won’t be our last. Everything from food, price,staff & service was spot on. Our new “go to” Indian. Enough said.

Having eaten Indian food across the country I will always say this home town restaurant is the very best. The quality of the food and choice of dishes is superb. Our group had varied dishes but I have got to say the lamb was absolutely delicious and all dishes were done to perfection. The whole experience was fantastic as it always is and the staff are amazing. And when the bill comes the price and value for money is amazing, great touch by the manager who offered a few complimentary drinks ad well, not a better curry house in the North of England

Relaxing atmosphere and spotlessly clean, - best Indian food we have enjoyed anywhere (and we have been to every venue in town). Our 18 year old son is vegan and difficult to please, he felt listened to and properly served by staff who knew what he needed and quickly found out what he wanted to eat. We loved the food and the service cannot be faulted. i intend to go back soon and explore more of the menu in a genuinely authentic venue that serves good food at a very reasonable cost. I went to this venue years ago and enjoyed it then but it has gone up to another level.

Fantastic choice and Great food cooked to order but felt we were rushed and quite noisy! Only down side was the waiter suggested that if we wanted to leave a tip to not putting with the bill and give it to him directly as he said he wouldn't receive anything which we found a bit awkward!

Visited this evening with a friend. From the start came prompt service with friendly, attentive staff. Poppadoms and pickles were flavoursome and fresh, bursting with taste and texture. Great quality vegetable dansak - beautiful flavours, cooked with quality ingredients a perfect level of spice. Every element of the mains and sides was flawless, as were the immaculate cutlery and glasses. The whole experience couldn't have been better!

After years of eating other Indian restaurants in Middlesbrough, my colleagues suggested The Massala..

We visited here on a Sunday evening, we had been recommended by a friend. We had a starter, then waited a little before our main. The staff were very friendly and professional. I chose a mild dish but my boyfriend d had a spicy jalfrezi and he really enjoyed it, we would definitely visit again.

We moved into this area from South Shields which has an abundance of Indian restaurants , and we have eaten in most of them , however after visiting The Massala we place this as our top choice. Once again we decided to eat early , so we were the first customers of the night . We were greeted by Saj who is so friendly and helpful.Our meals once again were excellent , however we didn't manage to completely finish them as the portions are so large.By the time we had finished our meals the restaurant was starting to fill up. We will certainly be returning , and another plus is that you can park the car just outside after 6.00 pm for free.

Came to the boro about 2 months ago on business and found this place, enjoyed the food so came back again this time. Once again the food was excellent and was well looked after by Saj. This visit I had a prawn puri to start which was very tasty. Lamb jalfrezi was delicious, the meat was really tender and the spice mix was spot on. Bombay aloo was fragrant and the potatoes creamy. If I'm back this way again I will definitely revisit and would highly recommend.

Had a lovely meal. Its the 4th time we've come here, as we recently moved to the area from London we were looking for a new Indian. Found this place and have turned into regulars. We just booked a table for 8. As we have family coming down and wouldn't take them anywhere else.

Visited last night having pre booked a table. No welcome from staff, no smiles, shown to a table and handed menus, no conversation. Food was fine and served promptly but again no interaction. Visited gents lavatory (upstairs, no sign of disabled facility) stairs and flooring is some sort of plastic, it was raining outside and floors were quite slippy and felt unsafe, no running water in hand wash basin so unable to clean hands, lavatory seat broken (clearly not recent), used wash basin in ladies loos some running water but taps not working easily and looked dirty. Spoke to staff re lavatory, felt I had wasted my words although he did say he would look- got no feedback. This place is far from awful and it would probably take little to make it fab but not there at the moment. I note it has a five star hygiene rating, certainly not one I would have given.

The masala is a real gem of an Indian restaurant. The food is truly excellent, with a good range of classic curries and house specials. On my most recent visit I had the lamb vindaloo which was well spiced with tender meat and a rich, tasty sauce. The pillau rice was equally good and the plain naan was truly excellent. The service was perfect. The waiter just seemed to appear at the right time and could not have been more attentive. All in all a brilliant dining experience. Highly recommended!

Ate here tonight after attending an event in Middlesbrough. We were welcomed with charm and courtesy and staff kept this up throughout. The restaurant is elegantly presented and we very much appreciated the way the tables were dressed with crisp fabric cloths and napkins.

My wife and I visited this restaurant early evening so it was very quiet.We ordered a bottle of wine and poppadoms and pickles while we looked through the menu. We ordered an onion bhaji to share ( because we aren't big eaters and if we have a starter each we struggle to finish our main courses ) I ordered Prawn Dansak my wife opted for Lamb Singapore. Both our meals were excellent with lots of prawns and lamb - the lamb was especially delicious. We finished our meal with coffees. All in all this is a great restaurant, nice decor and friendly staff . When I went to pay the bill my wife was presented wife a red rose - well done to all the staff , we will certainly come back again.

Indian food is my favourite, and I don’t eat it often as I never want to sicken myself of it. So when I do eat it, I like to make sure it’s decent.

We visited a friend and went down for a meal, 4 of us. Cannot understand why people like this place. The food is awful. Puris are stodgy. Fish is dreadful. Only decent thing is nan. Never go again.

It was nice to be welcomed to this establishment. My problems are from being vegetarian and finding places that serve food. You can mostly guarantee that whatever dish they will serve as a vegetarian dish. I had a nice Pathia that contained potatoes and chick peas. The sauce was just how I liked it, not too hot and flavoursome. I will be coming back!

Monday night so the restaurant was quiet but service was nevertheless attentive and fast. Had prawn puri to start followed by Chicken Phall with onion rice and naan. Phall was very hot as I was warned about by the waiter. I like it hot and it didn't fail by any means. The onion rice was the best I have had. Superb caramelized onions and pillau rice the flavour of whisk cut through the heat of the curry to make a good combination. Definitely would recommend the Massala and will certainly visit again if in the area. Thanks.

Whenever we get up to Middlesbrough for the footy we go to The Massala. It never seems to be busy yet the food is so so good.

The Massala provide us great service and all the staff was really friendly. Food was amazing and highly recommended, I went for my favorite, the Jalfrezi.

We had a takeaway from the Massala earlier and it was delicious. My only small gripe is that a little bit more juices in our rogan josh would have been appreciated. We'll definitely order from the Massala again.

Came here with 7 friend and was greater by Saj. He and the staff was fab and the food was fresh and delicious. Very generous portions and great variety between the dishes. We had a set menu with several guests having different dietary requirements and they could not have been more accommodating. The provided lots of choice including off menu items.

Chicken tikka pathia, chicken tikka dansak, chicken karahi and special Balti sampled over 2 visits, along with pilau and egg pilau. Delicious food every morsel. Attentive helpful staff. Highly recommend

I visited The Masala whilst on business in the area. Being new to the area,I referred to Trip Advisor reviews for the top restaurants in the area,and this one seemed to have the most positive comments. So I decided to try it out for myself. It was nicely decorated with red and black chairs,which was unusual,but worked well. I ordered the food and asking for it to be madras hot. When the food did come it was perfectly spiced. The onion bhajee was fresh and a good size. I ordered my curries as a side dish and not a main(good job I did!), as the portions were really generous. To finish off the meal,I had a lovely desert,which was presented in a small bowl. All in all good surroundings, good food,and value for money. Will definitely come next time.

We’ve had a few takeaway curry’s from the Middlesbrough area however this has been by far the best! We popped over to the restaurant to pick up a menu and were very impressed with the selection of food. They have everything covered. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. The Chicken Bhuna and King Prawn Pathia were amazingly tasty. Will have no hesitation to use The Massala again.

The restaurant in general is one of the best in town , great food and atmosphere . Freshly prepared and tastes real good for reasonable price ❤️. Would highly recommend this place for inidan food.

As a very keen curry enthusiast, I carried out a little research on which was the best Indian Restaurant in Middlesbrough and this place came up top .... I wasn’t disappointed! I ordered a Chicken Tikka Madras, Keema Rice and Roti, and the portions were ‘decent!’. The Madras was well cooked, and didn’t give that initial ‘raw spice’ burn you get with some curry’s, rice perfect and roti buttery and crispy. The Waiter Ryan was very friendly and chatty, and Manager Saj equally as welcoming. All in all a great meal, great experience and one I will be having again soon!!
