The Market Tavern, Steakhouse and Lodge in Northumberland

We booked in advance as other reviews advised it would be busy. We arrived on time and still waited 15 minutes for our table and very hectic. After ordering mains our food took 30 mins to arrive. We ordered the brisket & a mixed grill & side of winter veg. The brisket was delicious & plentiful, although It needed the side of veg, which I ate all of. The mixed grill was average, with less meat than expected for the price. Sirloin was quite small and very small sausages, which didn't taste very meaty. The waiter said they were trialling new sausages, so maybe these will be changed. 👎 Service was good, although a bit too busy and a long wait to be seated and for our food. There were people waiting longer who hadn't booked, so definitely book if you're going to eat here.

We are from Australia and we had a great lunch today 1/10/24 met the friendliest staff of ladies who made us and their regulars feel so welcome , we talked to a lovely young lady who had just got married about our spiders and crocodiles . It was a please to have picked that pub . Would have loved to spend more time there .

Fantastic. Beautiful food, very friendly and welcoming staff and just about the best meal we've had in years. We had the Steakhouse Special, Shepherds Pie and Pork Belly followed by Lemon Tart and Sticky Toffee Pudding with Custard to die for. Listening to the banter in the kitchen made us feel at home too 😆 Amazing experience. I'm not sure what the rooms are like but based on downstairs I'm confident they are just as first rate.

Was good, seems to be the only game in town on a Monday, they were fully booked but managed to fit us in after not too long a wait, food decent, locals friendly, they sell beer, all good.

Nice little pub serving food, with 6 bedrooms. Ours was small with no outside window, but it was ensuite, and the bed was comfortable. A kettle was provided with tea & coffee, & biscuits. Lovely friendly, helpful staff.

This b and b is in the perfect spot, right in the thick of it. The taverns food menu is great, and the portions are large! The room was great, just a bit dated.

Went for dinner. Very good bread board. Steak reported to be very good, cod loin good. We had seafood linguine - also good but a bit too creamy - some chilli instead would have been more to our taste. Also that was not cheap. Staff friendly and helpful, and brought what we asked for promptly. Would be happy to go back.

It's our second visit whilst on holiday. The food was great and the staff were super friendly. It's a tad pricey for us so an occasional treat.

Absolutely Fantastic. Great service, super friendly, amazing food. All round a wonderful experience. I tried the Shepherds Pie and it was amazing and a good sized portion. I would really recommend a visit but please do book as it gets really busy. I guess that's what happens when you serve great food.

Lovely, friendly old tavern situated just off the market place in Alnwick. Cooper was very attentive ensuring that everything was alright. Enjoyed a friends sharing platter with two other family members. Enough high quality food for three. Definitely recommend it.

My wife and myself were in Alnwick for the week and our beautiful apartment in Angel Lane was next door to the Market Tavern and what a treat this place is , the staff were absolutely superb nothing was too much trouble for them and they enjoyed a bit of a laugh , we ate in there 4 times in the week and every dish was just so tasty , we had several different meals and couldn't fault a thing , great atmosphere in the place , the background music great, but back to the food , if you like a good steak dinner then this is a great steak dinner , melt in the mouth stuff without a doubt the best we have had , can't praise it enough , Thanks to everyone.

We called in here to see if there were any tables available, the bartender was very pleasant and got us seated straight away. Once seated we were brought a cold bottle of water without asking for it. This in our opinion is a nice touch. The service and the food were really good and the portion sizes are generous.

We came for dinner here on holiday. We enjoyed a comfortable table, but most importantly a lovely meal. We had a mix of meals: shepherds pie, scampi, stuffed mushrooms - yet the standout was the need brisket. The portion was generous and the cut of meat was fantastic. Loved it!

My wife and I had dinner here. The food was very good (although my entrecote steak was missing the advertised tomatoes on the vine) and service was excellent. Atmosphere and decor were pleasant and overall value for money was good.

Traditional English pub serving real ale. Booked a table for 8.00pm but had to wait which was disappointing, what's the point of booking? Didn't have our food served until 9.50. However, the food was excellent, restaurant standard. The staff were friendly and polite. The place was very busy so recommend booking.

Liam and Savannah were excellent today during lunch. Brilliant service and the food and drinks were 5* This is absolutely the place to grab some lunch and drinks before or after your trip around the castle. We will certainly be back!

2 night stay in room 6, everything about this place is excellent, from the first minute to the last, The room had a comfortable bed and a modern bathroom, The bar had a friendly atmosphere and the staff were very accommodating, the prices are very reasonable compared to other bars locally for a lovely pint. The Dining area and food quality - was our favourite, quick friendly service by the table staff, food quality was beautiful and again very reasonably priced for very good, well presented food. Anyone visiting Alnwick or the local area needs to seriously consider staying at the Market Tavern. We couldn't fault it and can’t wait to return. Thank you all. Phil & Leeann.

Great place to eat and drink, the portions are big and the ingredients are fresh and tasty. We didn't book in advance but I would encourage it since they get really busy, we were lucky to get a table. They definitely don't skimp on alcohol in their drinks too, definitely great value for money.

First evening meal in Alnwick. Didn’t disappoint. Nice choice of drinks - local beer very good. Excellent choice on the menu - we had the venison and the cod. Very nice. Have booked to come again before end of our visit

Whilst staying in Ambke, we visited Alnwick to meet with some old friends that live in Alnwick. They booked a table at The Market Tavern, which did not disappoint. I have the rib-eye steak and it was the best steak I’ve ever had. Others had the venison and the pork belly, which they said was also delicious. The service topped it off and we had a lovely relaxed, enjoyable evening. . We are visiting their sister pub in Amble, The Harbour Inn on Friday, which I hope is just as good.

Never ate here but room was run down but clean. Have to say the bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. Slept like a log. Tip would be leave more than a third of a loo roll in the bathroom.

Amazingly, everything here was good. Beef brisket Sunday roast was so soft you could flake it off, and rib-eye was tender and of a good cut. Sticky ginger pudding with ice cream was excellent. Wait staff friendly and helpful. We liked it so much we pre-ordered their shepherd's pie to takeaway tomorrow (because their tavern specials are not available on Sundays).

This establishment was recommended to us by a hotel employee. He said it was delicious and the portions were large. And he was right)) the portions are large and everything is very tasty. We took their signature chicken and pork. Everything is tasty, satisfying and nutritious. Be sure to come hungry)) large selection of drinks, incl. local beer. Very pleasant service, the girl explained everything to us about each dish and answered all our questions. It was nice to be there))

We ate here twice, Thursday and Friday last week, and popped on for a couple of pints on Saturday. The food was really nice, and the staff were lovely, friendly, and great with advice about local attractions and recommendations for a takeaway. Highly recommended and booking is probably essential particularly on a weekend. A big thank you for helping make our weekend away such a good one

Nipped in here for a quick lunch while in the area and walked out full and very satisfied from a high quality meal. When shopping in alnwick I got recommended to visit here for food, I thought I'd walk by and try it. There was a few tables spare and I was quickly seated. Every member of staff was polite and welcoming, it felt like walking into your own local. I ordered a dressed crab sandwich and my girlfriend ordered the steak baguette. Both meals were absolutely beautiful, you can tell they don't skimp with quality here. I had a pint of pale ale from a local brewery which was also clean, crisp and full of flavour. All in all we came out very satisfied and I will definitely return when next in the area.

We visited the Market Tavern with a 14 month old baby and a dog plus 4 adults. Sometimes when a baby is in the party the service can be a bit wary. However, this was not the case here, the service could not have been more welcoming. This resulted in a very relaxed evening. The staff were brilliant. Oh and by the way, the food was excellent too! Amazing food, I would say one of the best sirloins had on point everything, in other hand the Ukrainian Waitress. Lady Amazing she never said not not anything that we as customers need or wanted always there, fast the rest good all well done, it's a old place, cozy confortable, parking outside free for 2 hours also recommendation the shoulder pork too super tender. God bless everyone in the kitchen and the rest. . Meal for 2 person including drinks around 73£.

I'm not really a 'pub person', but was really hungry and no cafes in town seemed to be open on a Monday. I thought I'd chance it, and was glad I did because the food and service were excellent. The chips, with their skins on, were the best I've ever eaten. I've deducted one star for the strong smell of dogs inside. It does say outside that dogs are welcome, and I like dogs, but there were a lot of dogs, including a large bulldog that arrived with its owners and panted heavily right next to my table. It did feel unhealthy to have dog breath so close to my food, and put me off ordering dessert. Perhaps having dog and non-dog areas would be a better idea? I would definitely recommend this pub and give it 5 stars for its food and service though

Had an enormous Sunday dinner which was delicious, roast sirloin, massive Yorkshire pudding and gravy with all the veg. Gets busy so recommend you book.

Very delicious lunch we had here. Only stopped in the area for a few hours while we visited the castle and we happen to stroll into this gem of a place. Our food was delicious and the portions are large.

One of the best pub meals we’ve had in a long time. Most places that serve up food like this would be lauding it up as a ‘gastropub’ but this is just good honest home cooked fare pretending to be your average pub grub. But average it surely ain’t. Could not recommend highly enough. Worth six stars.

We popped in for a pint and received a very warm welcome. Fortunately, we managed to get a table and enjoyed a terrific Sunday dinner. I had brisket which was delicious and there was a real pile of it. My partner has sirloin which was beautifully pink. An exceptional Sunday dinner.

Chose The Market Tavern for a nights stay to explore the delights of Alnwick ( which are amazing and varied ) . Booking process was easy , and welcome upon arrival was also very good . Manager was welcoming and friendly , also personally helped us to our room with our bags . Check in time 1500 hrs Check out time 1000hrs Rooms are dated and tired , but satisfactory for one night . Cleanliness could have been better , but this is an old establishment, and I understand that finding cleaning staff is an issue ( common place in the service industry in this day and age ). Bed and sleep Quality was great ( Bed was clean and comfortable) , bathroom was also spacious and functional . Shower control was counter-intuitive ( Water flow on the left instead of right , and temperature control turned the opposite direction- but sorted this in no time ). There was no noise , and a quiet nights sleep was had . We ate here too and booked the table upon check in ( as it does get very busy as the food served here is excellent , and very good value for money ). Staff and service are first class , and a generally cosy and inviting atmosphere. Overall , we enjoyed our stay , and the food - will definitely return for another visit . Stayed in Room number 6.

Wow! I never leave reviews…usually because I’ve not being ‘wowed’ and/or I’m a really fussy/picky eater & never clear my place as there’s always something I don’t like (again me being a fussy eater), but this was soooo nice. Beef….didn't even need cutting….so soft & tasty, veg cooked just right (not too soft but not too hard)…I don’t even like red cabbage but I ate it & enjoyed it! Roast potatoes….best Ive had in ages, crispy outside & fluffy inside, Yorkshire pudding, crisp & soft without being too soggy or too well done, gravy….sooooo tasty, oh and cheesy leeks 😘. All staff seemed happy to be there, pleasant & helpful without being ‘in your face’. Wine/beer lovely too. We will be back!

A warm welcoming pub with excellent and attentive staff who were very aware and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. Two members of staff stand out, Alex and Liam (aka Pickles) who were very friendly and engaging. Thank you all.

Booked in for 3 nights. The room was clean but very cold on arrival. There was a radiator on in the room but it didn’t give out much heat. We had been left a little fan heater which we used all the time. There was no heating in the bathroom and although the basin toilet and shower were clean the plumbing leading to the toilet had black stains running done it and overall the bathroom just needs a total refit. Otherwise the room was acceptable. Bed reasonably comfortable. The optimum word here is Lodge as it is not a hotel. The pub however is really good with very nice food. We left one day early.

First meal out in Alnwick, and my word it was good, I rang about an hour before we were heading into town to see if they had a table, they got us in during a very busy Saturday night which was brill. Brilliant welcome, and we were seated on time, the place is warm, cosy and very inviting. I felt extremely comfortable and at home. The service was great, warm and friendly and very efficient. Best bit was the food! I had the mussels to start, I got a great portion and the white cream sauce was one of the best I've had in recent memory. Next I had the Beef brisket which just fell apart and the sauce and vegetables on the side were all expertly cooked. Loved it and I couldn't recommend it more!!

Only had a fish and chip butty which was like a meal by its self absolutely lovely service excellent , lovely old friendly pub 😀
