Lovely location and brilliant staff. Vegetarian options weren't as poor as previous review reflected. Vegetarian burger was nice with a lentil pattie and vegetable pattie was very filling and not over cooked. There was also a vegetarian lasagne on the menu which my partner very much enjoyed saying it was very tasty. Also an option of cheese salad and mac and cheese which we didn't try. Overall would definitely recommend.

We stopped off for lunch while visiting Kippford with family. Very poor menu for veggies, only one option on the specials menu (unimaginative chilli) which was sold out! My partner opted for a veggie burger which was very disappointing; for such a simple offering, the burger itself was poor and nothing had been done to make it more interesting. Quite tasteless. I opted for the Mac and cheese, again lacking any imagination, it was decidedly average at best. The side order of fries improved things.

Went for lunch. Easy parking. Lots of tables outside and not jam packed next to each other so felt as though we had the garden and the view of the harbour to ourselves. Took the dog along with us too. Menu is typical british pub food + 4 specials, and very reasonably priced. We are vegetarian and there were 4 choices on the menu - burger, macarone cheese, curry, stroganoff. Would have liked a veggie special, which would have been the icing on the cake! Lovely staff, very quick service, we only waited about 10 mins from ordering to eating - great! We live relatively local, and we'll be back!

Prompt, cheerful service and generous portions. The menu has a rather limited choice of standard pub fare, but the food was tasty and well-presented. Note that food service ends relatively early, at 7.30pm. The drinks selection is a bit unimaginative, but they do at least have a good choice of low-alcohol beers. On the plus side, there is a lovely garden with some excellent childrens' play equipment, so it's certainly family-friendly.

Decided to go for a car run today, beautiful Autumn day for run along Solway Coast. Ended up at Kippford. Choice of two eateries, The Mariner and the Anchor. Very pleased we opted for the Mariner. Hubby had Galloway Beef, and I had macaroni. Both delicious. Cook clearly knows how to make a simple macaroni dish stand out, with clear hints of mustard and warmth of fresh pepper. The chap behind the bar, who also served us our meal, has worked there for 35 years he told us, but was showing no signs of getting fed up with the place - he clearly cares about it, and was highly informative about the local area. Food and friendly service much appreciated, we will stop here again in the future and hope the same chap is still there smiling and being helpful. Thanks

It was our first night in the area so we decided to dine locally. We chooseThe Mariner. There is plenty of room for parking and the decor is your typical country pub, which created a pleasant atmosphere. ...with expensive (and poor) drinks to boot. Not slow cooked as in to make it tender, slow cooked as in chucked in a slow cooker early in the day and then kept warm so it’s ready to be served, no better than 99% of people can make at home so not like eating out at all. Garden full of wasps (there must be something that attracts them there) so it’s hard to relax and the children’s area is in need of some TLC. Staff who are rude, I heard them being abrupt with the family before me and then they off with me too, customers eh! Such a shame as it’s in a great location but the food, drinks and staff let it down. Venture a hundred yards down the road and go to the Anchor, it’s much nicer.

Kippford is a popular waterside location, but the pub is handy with its own (small) car park. Interior a little dated, and the menu is fairly typical pub fare. Special lamb hotpot delicious, but chips not the best accompaniment. Also surprised that chicken & bacon pasta also came with chips. The lovely view across the estuary and very efficient and friendly service at a busy period raised my rating from average to very good.

Sit in the bar, the dining area, the conservatory, the garden or the terrace and you will have a wonderful view of the estuary and the stunning beauty that is Kippford. Its clean, dog friendly (and kid friendly with a nice play area outside) Amazing home cooked food, lightning fast service, and a genuine pleasure to visit. We called at The Mariner on a Saturday for lunch, there were only two other couples and a single gent in. Although the waitress/bar person was passing she did not greet us, and when I went to the bar to order I was left waiting for a good 5 mins, she did apologise advising she was making some sweets up. Our order was simple, 2 cheese burgers, one with onion to which she replied "I can request it" intimating I may or may not get what I ordered, however, when our burgers arrived I did get my fried onion. But what happened whilst we were eating was the strangest thing ever. A group of four came in and were told if they ordered there and then they would get to order there food, this also happened with an older couple who came in straight after the table of four, this was at 1.45pm. Now having worked in the hospitality trade for many years I appreciate you have to draw the line somewhere, but at 1.55 a family of four came in and were refused food and at 2pm a group for six adults came in and refused despite all of us were still eating and the cook was still there, I am glad that The Mariner is doing so well that they an afford to turn trade away because in my head they turned away in the region of a £100-£150 as the group of six were in for drinks too. All I can add to this is, if I did this in many of the hotels in Dumfries I'd have been pulled up for turning trade away. By the way food was ok and I wouldn't really hurry back.

We visit kippford every year in May and we always eat at The Mariner Hotel. The pub is in a lovely location with excellent views of the estuary, it has a lovely beer garden which is ideal for families and dog owners. The pub itself has a pleasant atmosphere with plenty of room to eat, the staff are friendly and always welcome us back each year. The food is always good and there is plenty of choice on the menu with daily specials. I am a bit late in writing this review but I feel that I have to respond to the people who have given The Mariner bad reviews. This pub is not shabby or dirty: the food is good home cooked grub made with quality ingredients and the staff are friendly and accommodating. If you want flashy, up to date decor and fancy celebrity chef style food and staff that look like they've just stepped off the set of first dates then go to the nearest town where I'm sure you will find something to suit. The fact that The Mariner has retained it's charm and homely atmosphere is what keeps bringing the regulars back.

We have just been to the mariner for our sons 21st birthday meal. My first time there, and very impressed. A lovely place, peaceful and relaxing. The service and food were excellent. We will be back.

called Saturday Evening for a drink after a walk at sandy hllls , had obviously been a very busy day , the weather was gorgeous . Normally the staff are really nice , but a very rude lady who had obviously didn't want to be there , didn't speak only to tell us how much it was, sooooo rude . we have a holiday home in Kippford and this is not what you want to receive on a lovely sunny Saturday night , been to The Steamboat Inn where everything is lovely on Sunday

My partner and his family have been coming here for 3 generations so I was eager to go, it was busy and was a beautiful evening outside. The food was average I had lasagne my partner had the chicken pasta, I tried his and the sauce tasted like a jar sauce and was horrible but he said it was alright. Mine was ok mince was very bitty like frozen mince though. Big portions, I'd stick to just salad and chips, rather than salad, veg and chips as the vegetables weren't very nice tasted tinned. Quite pricey for what it is to be honest. Again the scenery is beautiful and I'd say the price of the menu reflects this. The older gentleman behind the bar was lovely and helpful.

My boyfriend and I went in here because it looked busy from the outside. It was a hot sunny day so we decided to go inside. It loooks bery tired inside with rickety chairs. Don't think they have had an update for well over 20 years. Place was dirty. Wish we had decided to go elsewhere at this point. We ordered the haddock special. When the food came at first glance it looked nice. We soon found out it wasn't. Fish was greasy with bones in it. Chips were greasy, overcooked and tasted like they had been fried with the fish. Carrots were over cooked and tasted like tinned carrots. I didn't eat my meal and My boyfriend ate some of it but didn't enjoy it. We complained and asked for a refund for my meal as I hadn't eaten it. The lady behind the bar disappeared for 5 mins, then said the chef wasn't there to check what we were saying. She was really rude. She threw a £5 note at us and refused to give us a proper refund. I advise to avoid this place at all costs. Terrible food and very poor customer service.

Dog friendly and comfy. Hand pulled ales and dog treats available. Staff were friendly and accommodating, finding us a table despite being very busy.

The steak tasted boiled not fried and the onions were sparse and undercooked. This was not a good steak baguette. Nice service though in good surroundings.

Amazing location just to the side of the A75 near Castle Douglas. Perfect spot to take a breath, enjoy the view and also the good coffee and flapjack that they serve. A great little find.

Excellent service with you ordering everything from your table which is very convenient. Good choice of food although children’s menu could be better and there were no pizzas which dissapointed our youngest grandchild. We all enjoyed what we ordered and look forward to calling again soon.

It's always a pleasant surprise to find a pub with a good menu using local ingredients! We ate well, the service was friendly. The pub has a large garden. This must be one of the best pubs for miles in any direction! My wife left her sunglasses behind, but Tim, the landlord, was super-helpful, finding them and posting them on. We will definitely go there again.
