Popped in for a drink and some food. Was greeted by a stone face waitress who made us feel very inconvenient for coming in. We then sat at our table and she told us she would only take our order once everyone else in the pub had ordered, even though none of the other tables were ready to order and she stood around at the bar chatting the whole time we were there. We ultimately weren’t able to order food as we sat and waited and no one came so we left. Bar tender however was friendly and overall looks like a nice place just a shame about the customer service.

Food was absolutely delicious, and a great variety to choose from. All reasonably priced with choice of portion size. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the area was comfortable and welcoming. I will definitely be returning with friends and family.

Manager is a joke, had 1 drink with a friend early afternoon, ordered a second and it tasted funny. Due to the glass cleaner no doubt, not the beer. Tried to return drinks and got told to f off and why should he waste ten pounds on new drinks. Staff are brilliant, shame about the manager. Maybe you can put that tenner you saved towards an anger management course or gym membership.

Fantastic food & very reasonably priced

Great place to visit with the family. The food is really good and they have a nice outdoor space with a bouncy castle and swing for the kids. We especially like visiting on a sunny day and letting the kids play in the brook at the back trying to catch fish and insects.

Very slow service, food good but over priced, £12 lamb burger with no chips, chips extra cost.

Good pub, well served ales (thwaites which is unusual for the area) of which were on. Focuses on food and a clean modern "scottishesque" feel inside. The front of the pub from the road looks a bit tired which may put some people off, could use a lick of paint as it is not way representative of the inside.

Had the most amazing family Sunday dinner. Portions were huge- great value for money. Service was excellent and everything was reasonably priced and delicious. Best Sunday dinner we have had out in years! Will definitely be back x

Lovely meeting place as a vegetarian she choice was limited

Excellent value for money. Will definitely be returning...hopefully very soon! We went on a busy Friday evening and were never left waiting despite this. Staff were super efficient and friendly. When the food arrived it was cooked beautifully and full of flavour. My canine companions also enjoyed a feast of their own which is a lovely touch (reference photo for the doggie dinners)

We had fish and chips. The fish coating was overdone.

Won't be going there again,rude staff behind bar and put up signs telling people with muddy shoes to remove them before entering premises.

Very nice meal the staff were very obliging very professional all in all a very nice lunch time experience.

Well what can i say. Food was terrible. Stone cold Larry lamb burger. And dont get me started on the glazed doughnut burger. What I expected as to what I received were very different. Glazed, and iced with sprinkles, are two different thing. Yuck!! My god it was like they had ran out of the buns. And nipped to tesco for some dried out stale doughnuts off the shelf. Not as the menu described. Told the waiter thought he'd do something, offered other food but not after what we'd already had. Still made us pay full price. Pictures show menu description what I got and what I expected. Staff walking round in wellies and drinking prosecco. Just all very unprofessional. Won't be returning. Very disappointed.

Had a booking with my elderly parents whom were visiting from abroad, looking forward to giving them an old English dining experience. Was made to wait 30min for a table which had been booked 2weeks before, the food failed to come out all together, and the lamb was cold and under cooked. Asked for it to be replaced, and the staff and manager were not accommodating in the slightest, frazzled and impatient, and demanded we choose something else. Of course there was nothing else on the menu that we wanted. The mannerisms was rather blunt and rude, which had made us feel uncomfortable straight the way, felt totally out of place, and very sorry that my parents had to witness such drama. We left, because they failed to know what it takes to remedy a customer, due to their attitude and ill behaviour, laced with immaturity and unproffesionalism. The hospitality industry is a challenging industry, but as the host you have to be nice and welcoming, no matter, but because they had no idea on how to deal with a very simple blunder, i shall not be returning again and will never recommend either. Horrific.

Absolutely disgusting customer service! Rude staff, I noticed racism too! I am absolutely appalled. Spoke to the owner to complain and he was just as bad. I will be reporting the racism issue to trading standards. They messed me around with my bookings, changed it three times! I did them a favour by changing my booking but yet they continued to be rude and racist. Its no wonder that you have hardly any people of colour eating at your horrible pub, you do not even deserve a single star! You will be reported for your racism, your lies do not hold any weight. I am a member of equal rights community of Leicester and we have evidence of your racism. It will not be tolerated! No abuse was given to any of your staff, Clara asked me to change my booking twice and i very kindly agreed. You are the ones who are abusive and extremely prejudiced. You will not hear the last of this.

Be carefull if you order the lamb shank,it arrives saturated in mint sauce,mint sauce should come as an accompliment,all the potato,carrots gravy completely covered

This 750 year old pub,is warm cosy and inviting.we received a very nice greeting on entering. The place was very clean.staff are polite and friendly, the food is excellent,and the portions are MASSIVE.!! They have a very good menu,at very reasonable prices. Some of the tastiest food I,ve ever eaten. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Thankyou so much to everyone at the Malt Shovel. My mother's 80 birthday celebrations were fabulous! The outstanding hot and cold Christmas style buffet . I cannot congratulate the staff enough! So much attention to detail. Everyone said ; the best buffet they had been too! Great atmosphere in the pub too! Thankyou again!

We love this Pub. Staff are realky helpful and Polite. We had our Family Christmas Meal last week and it was Beautiful.

We had a steak, fish and burger. Burger and steak were OK but the fish looked like it was bought in, didn't taste fresh. Drinks were OK, the waitresses were to busy chatting away. Other than that the place is really nice

We went last Friday great friendly staff excellent food I had fish and chips so tasty we all had a pudding will definitely go back

Went back as they had had a refurbishment. Felt lovely & cosy as you walked inside & it was lovely compared to how it was before! Staff very friendly & service was good. We both had the Sunday lunch of pork & beef but we very sad say we were very disappointed as most of it was frozen ☹️we wanted extra gravy & we were charged £1.50 for a tiny jug! 🤔 sorry won't be going back. Fresh roasties etc & Yorkshire pudding don't take too much to make from scratch do they 😂😏 & they taste sooo much better!!!

Sunday 29th October 2023 Don’t book this pub for anything special! Booked a month in advance for a 60th birthday Sunday lunch. How disappointing and annoying to be told they didn’t have our booking for 6 (showed email confirming booking) all the person could say was we don’t have a table for you, didn’t even try to sort anything out - she didn’t care it was a special birthday completely ruined. Disgusting service! Will not be returning or recommending.

Good pub food, good portion size, value for money and good service

Lovely food, meat portions on large (standard) roast dinner are small.

14/10/23 Had an absolutely smashing Birthday celebration meal here with family. What a lovely place. Food was amazing, as was the beer and the service was outstanding. The ladies went out of their way to help us and make us all feel welcome. Really enjoyed and would definitely go back, very highly recommended. Thank you so much 🙂

Best Sunday lunch around. Food always excellent but the Sunday lunches are just fabulous, gorgeous home cooked food with competitive prices. The Yorkshire puds & stuffing are delicious. We always get a very friendly greeting especially from Betty the dog. I love that they use local produce. They also do a doggie Sunday dinner which went down extremely well with our pooch. Book early as it’s very popular. We are so impressed we have booked for Christmas lunch this year. Can’t wait. Thanks to all the staff.

For decades, the Malt Shovel has always been a personal favourite to continue returning to. At present, this place is 11 out of 10. The food is amazing.

Sunday roast is great value for money,

Had our first meal at this restaurant today and will not be back. 2 rump steak meals inedible. Spoke to staff members who said what did we want her to do about it. It's a shame as it was a nice place.

There were 5 of us on a pre booked table and were given a table for 4, so my mum sat at the end with nowhere to put her legs !! We wanted to order nachos as a starter to share, was told we couldn't but could have them with our main meal, which we didn't want. Over priced burger with additional cost for chips, salmon pasta very bland and not a lot of salmon, lamb shank came with lots of limp carrots and way to much mash, hunters chicken and scampi were ok. Very disappointing on a special sad occasion 😞 and we wouldn't return

Had not been to the Malt Shovel for a while. I was impressed by the more spacious feel. Staff were very attentive and meal was excellent. Would definitely visit again.

Can't fault it the food and service were first class

Lovely pub, nice outside area, however, took ages to get served for food, drink prices a bit steep, and the fish was like the stuff you buy from shop in a box, more batter than fish, not the greatest, however, their Sunday lunch is really lovely. Shame about sitting next to the drafty door, I did ask if we could be moved to another table, (2 of us) but was told the larger tables were for if bigger groups came in.. those tables sat empty the entire time we were there, and still empty when we left.. it wouldn't have hurt to accommodate us, seeing as the place was only 1/3 full. Some things on the menu are better, however, I will be avoiding the fish burger and fish and chips in future. I gave my other half some onion rings, as the fish didn't come with any. They were nice though .

Friendly local village pub with a welcoming atmosphere...Fantastic menu with a wide range of high quality meals(with locally produce ingredients) good vegan meals choice too. Oh and some amazing traditional puddings if you have room! Good range of drinks and table service. Booking advised.

Visited for the first time Friday evening. Did book online beforehand and got an immediate confirmation. Lovely pub, fresh and light decor. Greeted by name when I gave the booking time and promptly seated. Fantastic service, couldn’t fault it at all. Both members of staff were really professional, had a great rapport, excellent teamwork and system with tables. Drinks and food were served promptly and we really enjoyed it. Great value too. Will definitely be making a return visit.

Lovely atmosphere, lovely staff. The food was hot and served quickly, the only downside was that the beef was very thin, fatty and a bit chewy.

Lovely little village pub, food was lovely. One little mishap that was apoligised for but feel could of been better compensated.

What a fantastic place to spend your evenings and weekends. This place has changed alot over the years and now has gone through its biggest transition yet, into a more modern pub for all the family to enjoy. The food is brilliant affordable and tasty. The atmosphere is buzzing both inside and out but the best part is all the dogs allowed! Particularly the resident dog that wonders around like he owns the place, which to be fair being the size he is, he probably does. The staff and management will do anything for you, to ensure you have the best time. My grandma and grandad used to come here 3 or 4 times a week and it will forever be close to our family's heart. A must visit next time you are in Barkby!

Had a wonderful Sunday lunch with family, good food, wonderful company. Food portions are very large, we sent back so much uneaten veg, which is a shame. Will book again when we are back in the area.

Another fine meal had by all.traveled from Milton Keynes to meet up with my cousin and my mother .we all had Sunday roast with fresh vegetables.they do small or large portions .which is good for the small eaters .there was a selection of meat from beef pork , lamb and turkey or 1/2 chicken.there is also a good selection of sweets.prices are reasonable.and good value .well worth a visit .

Excellent value for money at lunch time, haven't visited for years. Combined it with a lovely walk in the area. Moreless full on a Tuesday lunch which speaks for itself. Will be back :-)

The pub has been done up very nicely. We were a large party,which I think tested the kitchen and the waiting staff. The food was fine but less would have been better as plates went back with 25% uneaten. Perhaps a simpler menu too as it was a challenge to choose from. Guess my summation would be B+ # coulddobetter

Had a meal last night. Excellent. The starter was very big, perhaps a bit too big, of chicken liver pate. Delicious. So was my partners onion soup. I had lamb shank and my partner had lasagne. Both very nice. Her son had a burger, as usual, which he said was gorgeous. The ambience is very nice and lots of dogs, which we enjoyed fussing. All in all a most enjoyable evening.

Lovely spread put on for our uncle's wake. We were really well looked after. Thank you.
