This place has potential but two occasions over three months I have been has been terrible! Can hardly get served because the barman is more interested in chatting to younger girls and when you do eventually get served they bring out mouldy stale bread! This is my local and rather having to take my kids to the next town, I thought I’d give Maldon another go nope nope, same again the manager would rather tippy tap on his computer than acknowledge anyone if you’re not in there clique then they don’t want to know you it’s like middle aged men running a sweet shop. I’m so disappointed when I said my son had a dairy allergy they offered him the macaroni cheese? Surely that’s just asking for trouble as I said clearly he’s allergic to dairy. It’s not very hands on and I would not say this is family friendly at all. I’d rather trek somewhere decent.

Went to the maldon today because they brought the roast dinners back and I couldn't have been more happier, and to be honest, probably some of the best roast potatoes I've had in a very long time, massive success with this reintroduction. Turkey was done to perfection, only had peas as i'm very fussy with vegetables. Very happy with it and I enjoyed it that much that I went back and had another. Yes 2 roast dinners in a single sitting. Now what does that say? Keep up the great work. Very impressed.

The staff were very accommodating and set up our table with decorations we provided. They also ensured the children had some crayons and a colouring sheet, which also formed part of the menu. This kept the children occupied until their food arrived. All the food come out at the same time, for a party of 13 this was good. We have already booked a table near Christmas for 17 of us so far, so looking forward to this. This used to always be our local. We stopped going many years ago when it went down hill. It has improved so much.

Came in for a girly lunch today and it was lovely. Could not fault anything, staff were lovely, food was on point. We ate outside in the lodge area due to it being somewhat sunny today. Had a selection of foods from the starters and side options. Will definitely be back!

This pub changed management some months back and is much improved on what it used to be. You can now rely on it for a nice pint of draft beer. Food's also quite acceptable. The only thing that let's it down is the noise from the pool players down the other end of the pub.

Was very pleasantly surprised. Had not been here for a few years after experiencing bad service and bad service BUT what a difference now it is under different management. The place is modern but comfortable. We arrived (unbooked) as they were just about to close the kitchen on Sunday afternoon but they were happy to keep the kitchen open for a bit longer so we could order. Food was delicious, none of us had any niggles and plenty of it. Wide selection of choice on the menu and reasonably priced. Will definitely be returning. Big thank you to all the staff

First we had walked in and greeted to lovely staff which was a good first impression, the environment was lovely, garden was good and big. We had starters for the first bit of our meal the chicken wings was cooked nicely and came out hot however bit bland, we then had chicken strips which was nice however tasted like it was frozen and then we had as our final starter a bbq chicken taco, which I was pleasantly surprised by as the other 2 starters didn't blow me away, soft taco shell with mix of veg and the chicken strips and bbq sauce but together it was very pleasant. For mains I had fish and chips, the fish was lovely with nice batter and cooked perfectly, peas were cooled nice and the chips were cooked perfectly. We also had sides of onion rings which was dissapointing most of them were broken when they came out and wasn't much onion however at 2.50 can't complain too much, the rosemary fries were not the best, overcooked for my liking and couldn't taste the rosemary at all. We also had garlic ciabbata which was cremated, heavily overcooked would not have served that myself. And lastly we had a brownie and ice cream, the brownie was lovely and had such a good taste to it, shame the ice cream didn't match otherwise it would've been lovely, overall about a 7/10

This pub is by far one of my favourites, if not my favourite. I was skeptical when it first opened but was very nicely surprised and has surpassed my expectations hugely. What they've done with the new menu too is lovely, added more variety to it rather than the same things and the food is top quality too and finally a place I can come to to have breakfast when I just haven't got the motivation to make it at home. And as representatives of the pub for the pool league, they go the extra mile to look after us, providing us with snacks and meals on game nights. It's the little things, the home comforts that make a pub an enjoyable place to be. Keep up the good work

As it was Fathers day, we thought it would be a nice idea to go local to the Maldon Grey. At 5:30pm, Upon arrival we enquired if a Table was available for a family of 7 which there was and we were seated. We started to look and choose from the Limited selection on the Sundy Dinner Menu where a Waiting staff member informed us that the Beef, on the Roast dish, was off the menu as they had ran out. We asked IF all other Menu items were all OK and was informed ALL not a problem it was just the Beef. Not a problem for us, as the mix we all wanted was Chicken roast and Steak and Ale pie. After about 15-20 or so minutes of choosing drinks and the Chicken dinners and Steak and Ale pie dinners, we then proceeded to get up and go up to the Bar which is right next to our table and order. At that exact moment as some of us got up, the waiting Staff member approached us and said, "The Chef has just TOLD me that we have NOT got enough food for yourselves, as the Chef has ONLY enough food for reservations left that for that evening" On Fathers Day evening, England playing their 1st Euro match and a Sunday evening, NOT enough food???? What The Huh???? So standing/sitting there at the table, a little bemused and very confuzzled we had to get our stuff and FF and leave? Without a by your leave nor amy form of reconciliation for making us wait to get kicked out this was to say the very least the MOST disappointing and very confusing experience we as a family have EVER received. So unfortunately Maldon Grey, you have lost out! This used to be our BIG family (and still growing family ALL very local to the MG) first choice out for local food dining BUT not no more.

We had the breaded mushrooms and vegetable tacos to start and the turkey roast dinner and beef roast dinner for main. All the food was great and I will definitely be eating there again. They had some great looking desserts on the menu but we were too full to order any. Terrible experience. Sunday roast was all processed meat and ridiculously incinerated rock g hard roast potatoes. Pointed this out and they were replaced with raw potatoes. Most of the food was left uneaten. So this after waiting nearly an hour for the food. No customer service to speak of as no apologies. Plates were not cleared until we left the table. Cauliflower cheese was in a plate out shouldn't have been and missing from a plate that should have had it. Server looked annoyed that he had to do something about it. The carrots and Yorkshire Pudding were nice but not worth what we paid for the entire meal.

Visited on a busy Sunday lunch during the football. We were asked whether we would like to watch, or be seated away. As non football fans - this was a relief and appreciated. Although it was busy, the communication for the wait on food was fantastic. They even cooked us something from the Main Menu - as we hadn’t realised it was only Sunday Menu available! The staff were jolly, fast moving and superb at their job. They even made time to treat our dog like royalty! No wonder the pub is busy, great service and great price for a quick bite out to eat. Unfortunately we chose to book our Christmas Day lunch at The Maldon Grey. The table was booked for 2pm for three of us. We got drinks from the bar which was fine for two of us but no real choice of ales (Rocking Reindeer or Icebreaker), not even bottled ones. Our starters arrived fairly quickly. Two Camembert, one pate. They were ok except the Camembert came with two slices of bread, rather than crusty bread or toast- difficult to put Camembert on flabby bread. And the pate had no bread! Just a bit of plain salad, so we asked for bread. We then waited over an hour for our main course!! When it finally arrived, it was cold. I sent mine back, the others put up with it because they were hungry. My steak was fine, but the turkey was cut thickly and very dry and had a gel of gravy spooned on top! The salmon was ok, but not much flavour. We each had four half circles of carrots, along with some brussels, fake tasting mash, four small roasties, red cabbage, a yorkshire, a pig in blanket and a hard stuffing ball the size of a marble! Not appetising at all! And they had to look for cutlery! The dessert came about 40 mins after the main course, the table wasn't cleared in this time. The Christmas pudding was a half inch thin slice from a catering loaf with custard. The brownies were ok, but not much Bailey's sauce. There was only two staff members at front of house and they just couldn't cope. Goodness knows what the kitchen was like for staff- one, maybe?! The two fellas were shattered. I felt sorry for them, but if they want to repeat Christmas Day meals next year they will have to plan it a lot better- staffing, beer, food quality, service. We won't be returning to find out however...

Came to The Maldon Grey for lunch with family, after seeing it has Changed hands. We were very pleasantly surprised with how much cleaner the place is and the much more pleasant atmosphere. The bar staff were very friendly and approachable, having a laugh with us over my lack of apple pay knowledge. We ordered 4 roast turkeys, 2 adults and 2 children's. All were very delicious. Nice fluffy roasties, delicious stuffing and we'll cooked veg. The only thing I'd say is homemade Yorkshire puddings would have made the roast even better. We also had 4 desserts, 2 chocolate fudge cakes and 2 honeycomb Sundaes. We will definitely be returning very soon!

Was informed by a friend that the Maldon was under new management, walked in and it did look fresh and clean compared to pre-lockdown, Nice girl on the bar took order and bought food out, nachos to start all looked good and tasted good, but it is hard to get nachos with grated cheese wrong... other half ordered a beef burger and and I had ‘homemade locally sourced lasagne’ Which was just layers of bland dry mince with hard pasta sheets between, no flavour atall, and no bechamel sauce (just grated cheese on top) onion rings hollow and overcooked filled with grease. Was refunded for uneaten food, no questions asked as I think the girl on the bar could see it was bad for herself. Really poor effort as under previous management always had a great meal here and spent lots of time here with friends. Save your money Or just have a drink.

We visited the maldon today for the second time since re opening . our first visit after re opening was not good , the meals were terrible , no choice on menu , fizzy drinks were flat ect , our biggest issue was the park , no children were allowed but the park was not fenced , so to tell our children you can look at the park but not play was a nightmare....Well.....What a relief it’s back to it’s brilliant standards , more food options and all our meals were fantastic!!! Nice size portions and the steaks were amazing , the children loved there chocolate brownie ! And loved playing on the park ... staff as usual are all so friendly and welcoming and ash the bar manager is so efficient! He is friendly and approachable if you have any questions and is quick to serve and seat all customers , he really has redeemed the maldon to the super family friendly pub , we would like to thank you all for the changes and improvements since re opening . Visited to the Maldon Grey with my family this evening and I am absolutely disgusted. The food was so horrid that they should consider sending their chef to a refreshers session at a Culinary School - Chips tasted as though they have been re-fried multiple times. As a family we will NOT be returning and we will be passing on this review to our peers. Explained everything once I was told the new management is the same as The Black Boy. It's bad enough the prices have risen by 25% but the food quality has declined by at least 25%.The young ladys who served are great, I will not discuss any other staff or management.Clearly no point in talking to management there as it was made clear to me my point of view was not required So be it. Family renuion meal for 10 + baby. Variety of meals ordered including 3 childrens. All meals came out at different times with children's meals coming towards the end for main and at the end for desserts even though they were ordered before the adults orders as the children were hungry. Portion sizes for the curries were very small and the broccoli, stilton and pasta dish was starter size. Having queried the size of the pasta dish, were told 'that is how it comes' by a very unhelpful member of staff. The children's issue was compounded by five desserts being served for three children with the member of staff leaving them on the table as she didn't want to take them back!!We have visited this place many times but are shocked at the standard of the food especially the portion size, the fact that children's needs are not taken into consideration, the fact that meals did not come out together, unhelpful staff. I would also like to add that we arrived at 12pm. The door to the garden was not open and the children were told by the staff that they had lost the key. (they did, however, unlock the door). There should not, in my opinion, have been a problem with the service as the venue was not busy. It was not appropriate to keep the children waiting for their meals until after the adults had been served. No compensation was offered. Value for money? In my opinion NO

We called in just for drinks and crisps, as we had other plans for later on and didn't need a meal. First and foremost, I have to say that this is probably the cleanest pub I have even been in. Everything - the windows, the mirrors, the tables and the toilets - were absolutely spotless. The staff were very polite and helpful, taking the time to discuss the drinks on offer, and whether or not we needed to book for Sunday lunch, or just turn up. (Tip:- it probably would be best to book in advance, as they do get rather busy on Sundays.) We were very impressed with everything, and if I have any criticism at all it is that they had a very limited choice of alcohol-free drinks. As they have a somewhat large car park, they must expect quite a lot of people to be driving, so a decent range of alcohol-free beers, ciders and maybe even wine probably wouldn't go amiss!! Apart from that, we were very happy and fully intend to book for Sunday lunch next week.

After reading a great write up in the local paper, my parents are I decided to visit and sample the new menu. It didn’t bode well when it took the barmaid 3 attempts to make an IPA shandy! Initially she used Fosters, then started to pour Perroni before getting it correct. On the menu I only had a choice of 2 gluten free meals, both curries, we ordered the gluten free chicken tikka only to be asked if we wanted naan bread or bhagies. When we said it was gluten free, Peter, the bar man said well it doesn’t say it’s that on the till. We showed him the menu and he just repeated that it wasn’t showing as that. When asked if they could check he was more concerned that he couldn’t cancel the order on the till. Needless to say we left without eating. No understanding of the menu or what it meant to be gluten free.

This was a nice group get together, so in that sense it was a good evening. However I, and others I have talked to, consider the food basic and the service poor. We pre-ordered so that should have made it easy for the kitchen. My Prawn Cocktail was served on a plate with a few prawns in sauce on a lettuce leaf which was just about OK. What you can't forgive is three triangles of white sliced and a little tub of marg! The Roast Turkey with trimmings was quite nice, the turkey being moist etc. However, the veg served in large dishes at the table contained the largest and toughest carrots I have ever come across. Then, the lemon cheesecake came out. Obviously not home made and this was confirmed when the waitress referred to some mix up with the numbers and this not being able to be rectified because of the defrosting time it takes for the cheesecake - as though that was something to be proud of! Anyway, think lack of staffing is an issue. With so many other lovely places to eat around here I hope we won't be returning next Christmas.

Decided to try this place for a Sunday roast. We had one Beef and one Chicken dinner, nice. There was a lot of food on our plates for the money. The roast beef took me back a bit, reminded me of a seventies roast beef where the beef was tenderised by boiling first, shame it lost its flavour.Pub was busy with locals and seemed to be very popular.

Hadn't been in the maldon grey for a while and popped in with family for a quick drink, this was my local quite a few years ago and I loved this pub, but unfortunately it has gone down hill and I wouldn't return in a hurry. The girl behind the bar didn't have a clue about what drinks were available and when I asked for a koppenberg she just put the bottle on the bar without even offering me a glass to put it in!! I asked for a glass with some ice and wished I hadn't as the glass had three different shades of lipstick on it and didn't look like it had been cleaned properly in a long time I asked for a clean glass and got given on other dirty one!! I certainly wouldn't want to eat there if that's what they class as clean. Could be a great pub again with better staff training and a bit more effort all round.

Choose a table, place your drink and food order at the bar, and hey presto away you go.Typical pub grub but (for pensioners if using the seniors menu) very good value for money. I choose breaded mushrooms, garlic dip and small side salad for starters (10 mushrooms!!!), all day breakfast for main course, and treacle sponge and custard for desert. The food was served promptly, hot, well cooked, and the treacle sponge was delicious. What more could you want for £5.99? My partner had a jacket potato with tuna mayonnaise and a side salad from the main menu, which was enjoyed. Only downside was the tables and menus could be cleaned more efficiently!

We want to say a big thank you to the cleaners for letting us in early in the morning to get things ready for the party and thank you to the chef who has done an amazing job for putting a buffet together the food went within few seconds staff where very helpful could fault anything!! Will definitely come back again !!! Thanks again! ☺️

I hate leaving bad reviews, but sometimes it has to be done. Especially when the restaurant is this bad. The food was so terrible. The adults had the roast dinner and the children had chicken nuggets and chips. The food at least resembled what it was supposed to be but tasted like bland mush. Even the children's food was terrible. We told the waiter the food was terrible and he just said "oh, I'll let them know" and that was it. Not very helpful. We left most of our food and no one batted a eyelid. Although most people's plates in the restaurant were left half eaten so maybe that was the norm. The service was terrible, the tables were dirty and the toilets unsanitary. I dread to think what the kitchen looked like. I would strongly advise going somewhere, anywhere, else.

Reasonably priced food, reasonable food, nothing special but then nothing bad either! The Hunters Chicken is really tasty, and they also do 'XL' size portions (I haven't had one) but they are massive! The Curry is also very tasty! There is a selection of alcoholic beverages too and I would recommend the cocktails! Gets quite loud if the football is on but apart from that a nice pub!

Don't get me wrong you get what you pay for...and this pub is CHEAP! parter had a mixed grill missing chicken breast stated on menu, no staff in restaurant area to address our problems to- but much laughter from behind an 'authorised for staff only' door, so presuming there was other staff somewhere. Dessert was a millionaires shortcake.. completely covered in a chocolate sauce- so much that would couldn't see what you were eating. Very rich and ruined....and i like chocolate! With no one to complain to-- plus the worry that i a complaint may result in the laughing staff behind the door may do something to our dinner we thought we wouldn't make a fuss as we were aware the meal didn't cost very much. When presenting with a £30 bill I gave the bar lady a £5 off Greene King Meet & eat voucher- which when applying for voucher i specifically noted this as the pub id be using it was declined with little explanation!!!The place generally felt a bit dirty. Ripped seats sticky tables. Wont be visiting again.

Great time had by all. You pay for what you get at the Maldon. The drinks are reasonable priced and so is the food. There is a good choice on the menu catering for everyone. The staff were friendly and polite and our food came out hot and delicious. We were part of a large table and everyone got want they wanted and didn't have to wait long. The pub was buzzing as football was on. The kids played on the bouncy castle most of the time being there. A great atmosphere and a great little local pub/restaurant.

I visited the maldon grey today for a quick, cheap dinner and a drink with friends, the food was good and reasonably priced, however i was disgusted in the attitude of one of the staff (who I later found out is called Jessica) she was rude, miserable and quite frankly more interested in chatting to people than doing her job! If i decide to come back it will be for the food and other staff members, our waitress was friendly and chatty and smiling, it's a shame her happiness hasn't rubbed off on her colleague! It's off putting when barmaids make you feel inferior, if she really dislikes her job perhaps she should look elsewhere for employment......

Really disappointed with this place. The service was poor, stretched and uninterested in the customer was the impression that we all had. Food took for too long to arrive and had to send some back, which we almost had to force back as waiter didn't seem too bothered by our displeasure. Avoid at all costs!

The Staff are very friendly and the food is basic but very good. This is a Green King Pub that is very reasonably priced for Beer & Food.Good for Families with outdoor facilities for Children. This is well worth a visit. Although the inside is clean it could do with some updating. The downside to this would be prices would inevitably go up.

It's probably ok as a neighborhood pub with food but for a family meal out on a Saturday or was disappointing. The pub has seen better days and beer garden littered with smoking detritus. Food was ok but nothing special. Flies buzzing round the dining areanever helps. Service friendly enough. Why do pubs with wipe down menus never do so?! A passable pint of Greene King IPA made it tolerable. Don't think I'll be back in a hurry.

A pub that is in the Wetherspoons type with great offers and therefore what you see is what you get. I had a curry with accompanying mini bucket of spicy chicken wings and all was fine. Service with a smile but table could have been a little better cleaned. Overall ok given the cheap price. Especially good value with mid week offers!

Went on a Tuesday evening on the spur of the moment, two had the steak special and one the chicken sizzler, three pints just over £31 which included a couple of side dishes.. Great value. Our steaks were cooked as requested, food hot and plenty. Steak very good quality. . The chicken sizzler was well cooked. We did not have to wait a long time for the food. Would certainly go again on a Tuesday.

A very typical local chain of pub grub, the food was nice as you get what you pay for, very reasonable in price and a large selection. The service was average meals were bought out with one person left for 5 minutes without theirs and needed prompting to bring the meal out, the cocktail jugs were over priced and not particularly nice, on a Saturday you get a free Sundae with some large plate meals & ended up having trouble ordering the Sundae. For a cheap meal I would go here again but the service needs improvement.

We booked a Christmas meal here so the deposit was paid and menus had already been handed in. Yet out 6.30 meal didn't arrive until 7.30. The staff cleared the starters plates before everyone had finished. By this we assumed main course would be immanent, but this arrived another 45 minutes later. The food was nice but the staff could use some training.

Thought we would give this restaurant another try, was worse than the first time we wrote a review. Food was cold when brought to the table. Fish was like it was cooked yesterday and reheated in the microwave, spare ribs cold with hardly any sauce, chicken Tikka had about three pieces of chicken in it, pompadoms were stale, and they ran out of rolls or bread for the soup.Food was returned to the kitchen and appeared back completely dried out by the microwave. The table was left uncleared of dirty plates for a good twenty minutes after we had finished eating this rubbish they call food. To be honest would have had a better meal and service at the local chip shop, and a lot cheaper.

A lot of people judge an establishment by the cleanliness of the toilets-that's why my other half wanted to finish our drinks & forget about the food as soon as he got back from the toilet. He was over-ruled (only because the 3 of us were starving!) so we ordered 2 starters to share. The food was ok, just ok, so we decided not to order anything else & left......no plans to return!

Disappointing. Always eaten here in past and had good meals but this time was there a different chef!? The sizzler did not sizzle and the steak was swimming in oil. I was asked if I wanted the meal cleaned up or a replacement which would take a long time to recook!! Went for the upgraded steak and was tougher than the first steak. Wine tasted fermented, we tried 2 bottles which were both the same, not good for a dry wine. Pub was empty that says it all in a nutshell. Won't be returning!!

this pub was good when we first moved here now the food and the service is terrible. The other half had the mega ribs which only come out with one rack should of been 2? I ordered the fish and chip feast. Fish come out over cooked like a bit of cardboard. And the serving staff should look at what there serving. And not at there watches to see how fast they can get the food out? Chips are always under cooked! You have lost a regular from here sorry?

We celebrated my sisters 50th birthday here ! We had the private function room upstairs which has recently been refurbished and it was lovely. We were allowed in early to decorate with banners and balloons. Baring in mind we were a large group and all opted for three courses the food was still all served together so we had no one waiting, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We couldn't fault it all :) A few of the family stayed and were extremely happy with rooms and the yummy breakfast :)

Requested a twin room but arrived to be shown into a double. Couldn't be changed until the following day apparently! Went down for breakfast on Saturday morning at about 8:30 (breakfast served from 8 - 10). No staff apart from the cleaner. She kindly tried to provide some tea, milk and cereals - and bread. So we made do without a cooked breakfast (included in the rate we paid). At about 9:10 a young lady appeared who offered us a cooked breakfast just as we were about to leave the restaurant. No apology. No kitchen staff. Just awful. I did get an apology from the General Manager later that day and Sunday morning breakfast was fine. Certainly won't use this hotel again.
