The Lucky Dragon in South Lakeland

I found the service really disappointing. Found it to be a very rude and abrupt service both on the phone and in person. Regarding the food, don’t order chow mein! It is not proper chow mein, it’s like thin noodles in gravy and was awful! The salt & pepper chips weren’t great either and were very bland. The salt & pepper crispy chicken was amazing as was the crispy beef. Just be aware they are also cash only which in this day is not great as you have to search for a cash point with little to no parking due to the sheer amount of visitors in the area.

Not bad, quite in line with Chinese tastes, better than Chinese restaurants in London

If you like a good Chinese takeaway then this place isn't for you.

Excellent food, fresh, delicious, and affordable. Stayed in Ambleside and usual Chinese closed for a holiday, so pleased this was much better. We had the mixed starter’s which was flavoursome and plenty for two, followed by mixed s&s, egg fried rice and beef in black bean. We had to leave some as too full.

We ordered 4 dishes. Two were not as requested. My vegetarian partner was given a pork dish. My friend was served a pineapple dish despite her allergies. Thankfully we checked the food before we ate it. If you have an allergy, don’t order from the Lucky Dragon; you will be very unlucky. When we walked back to challenge the food we had been served, the gentleman on the counter was very dismissive. I suspect he has no idea of the impact of food allergies.

Really good Chinese to feed 5 people with different dishes, could order ahead, and a very reasonable price

Delicious takeaway, one of the best we've had. didn't have to wait long and the food was still hot by the time we got to our apartment when it was served.

Went here 3 times during a stray in Ambleside. The red and green thai chicken curries were excellent and more like you would get from a Thai restaurant rather from a Chinese making them great value for money.

Banging food as always (got the Singapore vermicelli + salt & pepper chips). This is my go-to takeaway when visiting Ambleside. Food tastes great, generous portion sizes, and very good prices.

For a chinese for 5 people, under £60, and to be as tasty as it was is a rare find. Staff were lovely, and gave us a free bag of prawn crackers. Dishes were yummy and were still fairly hot despite the walk up the big hill. Food was very non-greasy also, and the chowmein was bursting with lovely fresh veggies. Beautiful meal, thank you!

I’m from London so I hate to say this, but this is one of the best Chinese takeaways I’ve ever had. I had sweet-and-sour chicken and salt and pepper wings and it was hot and crunchy after collecting it. Took no more than 10 minutes total. 10/10 would recommend. God bless Chinese people.

There was loads of food. If quantity is your thing this is the place for you....as long as you LOVE garlic. We had: Kung Bo Chicken - that was good Chicken fried rice - little dices of processed chicken, little flavour Beef Chow Mein - could only taste the garlic and very few noodles Chicken n Cashew stir fry.... drowned in garlic. Literally no other flavour Chicken Satay Skewers - overcooked and not the least bit satay. Best thing about this place is it's cheap and fast. This is a Chinese which knows it has no competition because if they did they'd try harder with the flavours and quality.

This place is just on the outskirts of the village centre and is cash only. Food was pretty good and much less than we would normally pay from my local Chinese in Berkshire. Not the best but decent for the money.

I'd say the current 4 star average review score is accurate. To be precise I'd give it a 3.7. The sweet and sour chicken was really quite good and served piping hot. The batter around the chicken was done well. The meat was ok. Good variety of other ingredients, big chunks of pineapple and green pepper. Good portion size. The egg fried rice was disappointing, dry, not much flavour and seemed to be more lukewarm than the chicken. I'd go for boiled rice next time. Service was exceptionally fast. Good value at £8.80 for both dishes in 2024. In a town like ambleside with limited value takeaway options then I'd recommend Lucky Dragon.

You need to get rid of the guy on the front desk. He’s about as helpful as a chocolate teapot. Really couldn’t be bothered, couldn’t care less. He was so uninterested that it was just plain rude, so I walked out without ordering. Your loss.

Didn't realise Ambleside closed for food so early everywhere..8.30 so after walking around we ended up here and what lovely food. Fresh flavours, hot and very yummy. After spending a week here I can honestly say the quality of food in Ambleside has fallen so thank you for great food at a fraction of the price

Food was good and quick but I’d have liked clearer information on food allergies

Rude service and food poisoning, a winning combination. Guy on the front desk was rude. Closing time is displayed as 10pm, when we asked when we should order and collect we were told “No, be early”. We then asked what times that meant we were told “Call at 9:15, be here by 9:30”. No please, no thank you, just blunt instruction. The food itself was poor, tasting strongly of vinegar and far too spicy. We were hungry so ate what we could, binning the rest. The walks planned the next day were dominated by stomach cramps and excessive flatulence. I farted so loud in rydal caves that it echoed, causing the other visitors to stare and a teenager with stupid hair gagged on the eggy waft. Not worth it in the slightest.

Oil was obviously far too hot for the rice in our chicken fried rice which tasted burnt. Charged extra for a new dish even though I had to drive miles to return and eat separately from the rest of the family. Then laughed and joked in the kitchen whilst making the replacement which led me to believe they’d messed with it, so ended up not eating it after all. Used many times but never again!

An ok Chinese takeaway. Portion sizes not bad, rice portion sizes on the small side. Food prepared to a reasonable quality standard but nothing exceptional or worthy of a special trip. Taste-wise, again ok but not special. So in the end, nothing particularly offputting but also nothing to strongly recommend. Just “ok”.

Really fast taking less than 10 mins for 2 set meals, food was really good - slightly pricey but the set meals were good value.

We had a spur of the moment evening takeaway from here whilst holidaying a few mins outside of Ambleside. Food was tasty and still piping hot when we got back to our holiday let. Plenty of it for the 2 of us, we had 2 mains, 2 rice and shared spring rolls. Some comments have said the sauce was watery, the sauces were as we like them and definitely tasted as expected/hoped for. We don’t t like our sauces thick, gloopy or over salty so it was perfect for us. I guess as with all food there maybe a preference or what you are used to element when writing a review. We would/will definitely use again.

Genuinely one of the best Chinese takeaways I’ve ever had. We ordered Singapore fried rice, chicken fried rice, king do ribs, 1/4 duck and pancakes and some prawn crackers. Everything was beautiful. I’m always extremely dubious when buying a takeaway from somewhere I’ve never tried but this was faultless. The kitchen looked spotless and everything was prepared quickly. I strongly recommend.

Every time we come to Ambleside we get a takeaway from here. This visit was for 3 nights, we went here twice..... that's how good this place is.

Called to order for collection, guy who picked up the phone first hung up on me then said we can only pick up food at 8pm, I called at 6pm! Useless

Tried to call in, and was out on hold for 5mins and then the guy cut the call without warning. Turns out he cut the call because the closest time for collection would be 8pm (2hrs away) and he didn't want to inform us of that. Quite lousy for a collection only 'restaurant'.

Very tasteless spent £45 quid cash ! Everything tasted watery no flavours in anything , as for the chicken balls well these was over cooked hard but also not even chicken balls more like some cheap chicken nuggets from a certain store ! I would have expected from such a beautiful area the standards would have been high ! Even Gordon Ramsey would be shocked !

The best chop suey ever very tasty value for money excellent all round great service ate from here 4 nights running was that good highly recommended

Chinese takeaway in Ambleside. We went for the set dinner for 2 which is only £25. (Cash only mind!) Spring rolls were proper size and full, very good. Ribs decent size and meaty. Chicken sweet&sour was pretty good, as was beef in black bean. Both with reasonable amounts of meat. Rice was really good with plenty of shrimp and pork in. Very quick service. There doesn't seem to be any way to order online and as we had no phone signal, we just popped in, ordered then went up the road to the pub for a quick ale before collecting. Takeaway chinese can be very hit and miss as you've paid for your food and taken it, before you get to see what you've been served. This was pretty good. Certainly better than the other Ambleside offering. Good value for money. We ate every single bit of it!

Very nice food. Lots of choice on the menu. The food was tasteful with plenty of meat in the dishes. Prawns large in dishes. My only issue is the cash only system they have.

Tues night, 7 pm and it's packed.....the team soon sorted everyone out and we were off home by 7.15. Crispy beef/noodles/rice. All spot on. Will be back.

Hmmmmm.... I came here many years ago and had such an amazing Chicken Curry; alas it’s nothing like that anymore, change of Chef I fear... still... not a bad experience at all. Pretty standard Chinese food (unlike my visit many years ago). Like all take aways it’s “incredibly overpriced”

I nipped here for a take a way while I was was staying local and it was a good one. I had veggie spring rolls, stir fried mushroom with garlic and egg fried rice. It was very tasty.

Quick service, food was piping hot and the special curry had a good mix of fresh ingredients. Curry sauce could have been a bit thicker and spicier, but really enjoyed it. Worth a visit.

Our third time in Ambleside and our third takeaway from Lucky Dragon. Superb as always. Placed order by phone, ready on time when I arrived to collect. Delicious food. Reasonable pricing. Strongly recommend stir fry pork with ginger and pineapple. We'll be back.

Bland, watery and tasteless food We complained and were told as we had eaten some they couldn’t refund!? We had to taste so to see how bad it was!

Phoned in the order to be told it would be a 40 minute wait which was ok, I arrived in 15 minutes only to see people placing orders in house they would be 10 minute wait and all got there orders before mine are phone orders put on a delay Food was ok but far too much spice some of it was in edible I won't be returning

I ordered a couple of portions of salt and pepper chips here and they were great. Very generous portions and the chips were nice and crispy with lots of flavor. Will definitely call in here again. Please note that they only accept cash, so come prepared.

Exactly what you’re looking for in a Chinese takeaway- really tasty food, 5* hygiene rating, quick service and good price! We ordered food for 2 people for tea which came to just less than £10pp. Food was ready within 10 minutes of ordering on a busy Saturday night in the middle of summer! Do note there isn’t much space inside to wait so on a rainy day we would recommend preordering or bring an umbrella to wait outside! Also remember it’s cash only!

Ordered a big order on the phone to this place after arriving to our staycation location, despite the big order they were very friendly and didn't forget anything, only issue was that we had to pay in cash haha but luckily I had brought quite a few large banknotes with me. Food was as good as you expect and nice servings, also got lots of the fried rice crisps, a nice late night takeaway.

This place had been recommended by a couple of friends in Hawkshead so we gave it a try. First class Chinese takeaway. The noodle dishes are highly recommended.

Everytime we go to the lake District, we come here guaranteed. One of the best Chinese takeaways about. On the one way street in Windermere, guy on counter dead friendly and welcoming. Been here today. Was bang on👍 special fried rice is up there.

Excellent takeaway - probably one of the best Chinese we’ve had. Good flavours, freshly cooked, lots of veg and piping hot. Only takes cash but didn’t put us off or the many other customers. Totally recommend if staying in Ambleside.

Salt and pepper chicken was just breadcrumbs with no chicken in, sad times for me when I got home to eat my take away and there was deep-fried bread crumbs and soggy veggies only :( won't be coming back ever!

Very disappointed, the chicken curry was so watery , chow mein far too wet and more like a chop suey. A new take on Kung Po , too much pepper in Singapore chow mein ....Spicy Ribs were good though

Lovely food, the Chow Mein was awesome,actual vegatables in with it & not just noodles to make it look like you are getting a lot as most Chinese Take Aways do in South Cumbria, The Spare Ribs are the best value for money & are loaded with meat.,no gristle or fat on them & realy tasty. Very friendly staff too, especially the young local lad on the counter. My Favourite local Chinese Take Away now & i drive all the way from Millom as i would rather by quality food.

Quick service, excellent food with crisp fresh vegetables. Huge portions, would recommend. We had the set meal for two and the takeaway kindly allowed us to swap the ribs for chicken satay as not to fussed on ribs.

We popped in for a takeaway in our first night on holiday - were not expecting a lot from the exterior, but the food was really surprisingly good. All the standard dishes, reasonable portions for the price, and the salt and pepper beef was delicious...

Good food, balanced out but prices are Pretty steep. The food tastes good with a balance of flavours. I will visit again but the prices are my main concern, we bought 2 mains with 2 egg fried rice and it was £18. Anyway it’s good food and I recommend having dinner from here.

Food stinks. We wanted vegetarian food. It was late, so most restaurants had closed. So we picked this Chinese takeaway. And it was the worst Chinese food we have ever had. They accept only cash, which is really stupid in the post COVID era.

Very poor Chinese, tasteless food that has been re heated…. Even the RICE!! The only thing decent was the prawn crackers, everything else was shocking!! Don’t waste your money

Food was very tasty however what wrecked the whole experience was the teenager who was bagging up the food,was very sharp when he was serving us and heard him swearing when he was walking into the kitchen.
