The London Inn in Mid Devon

Great friendly pub with fab Sunday roast!

If you're that person who is craving for something so tasty, that is so unbelievable that you think it doesn't exist...then book a table at the London Inn, Morchard Bishop because it DOES exist! This pub is a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. We were seated next to an open fire, which was a perfect start for a chilly Autumn evening, the smell from the open fire was subtle and comforting. I ordered from the menu, a grilled pork steak with a mustard & apple cream sauce, and a warm treacle tart with clotted cream for dessert. The food came out, piping hot, generous portion sizes and with a taste that blew me away. The pork was lean and incredibly tender that it practically melted in the mouth, the accompanying sauce tantalised my tastebuds with a perfect blend of sweetness paired with the intense boldness from the mustard seeds. It blew me away! The homemade warm treacle tart is without doubt, the best dessert I have ever had. Sweet, but not nauseatingly so. The consistency was perfect, gooey, but not to the point of chewy, and the pastry bottom was light & buttery. It was absolutely delightful, and fulfilled my sweet tooth needs perfectly. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere within the Inn was delighful, & cosy. A warm Devonian Inn serving traditional homemade food. I honestly can not find a single fault from my visit, and I can not recommend this fine establishment any higher!

Such a warm service and great proper pub food done right with fantastic portions. Walking the Devon Coast To Coast and Sarah the landlady kindly offered the beer garden as a tent pitch. Great to find a pub done right with a lovely community feel.

Really lovely old pub with modern decor. The Ladies slate/wood flooring is a thing of beauty: it's worth going for Ladies interior design alone. The cheesy chips were fab, the beer and ale on tap as to be expected. The carpark was full except for the one space we park in, which is generally a good sign of value and quality.

Came for Sunday lunch and were not disappointed. Haven't been here for a long time and the quality (and quantity!) of the food was as good as ever. My dad is very particular when it comes to eating out and he gave the pie 8/10 and he would recommend it to anyone, which is high praise from him. We were disappointed we couldn't eat all the veg that came with the food and pleasantly surprised when we were asked if we want containers to take it home. The pub has had a big (but very tasteful) renovation since the last time we were there and is very much a wow when you walk in. The staff were just as welcoming and friendly as we remembered them when Mother was there. We will definitely be back as that was worth every penny we spent. Thankyou!

We have friends who stay in the village and we all headed out for a meal. Staff were very friendly, and knowledgeable on the menu. Service was quick and easy with staff dealing with allergy issues easily. The food was very tasty and very large portions. Highly recommend visiting here

Great pub ran by friendly folk. The food is tasty, fresh and colossal in portion. The bar-staff are also very accommodating, happy to make me a White Russian even though it does not appear on any the menu. Our waitress was also a bundle of smiles who made us feel welcome despite having ordered so close to the end of the dinner service. Magical little place tucked away in the country. Worth a visit. The perfect finale to a trek through the Devonshire countryside.

Good pub for food. Well cooked and presented. Good range of menu and specials. One of those pubs where if you like a desert dont have a starter as there wont be room for both. Revisited today for birthday meal, had one of the best gamon steaks that I have had for a long time.

Warm welcoming dog friendly pub, serving good honest food at reasonable prices. More beef than you could shake a stick at with ample roast potatoes and vegetables! The puddings were very generous and tasted delicious. Everything was well presented topped off by friendly and efficient staff. We will definitely be returning.

Not dog friendly. Turned away as we couldn’t guarantee our dachshund wouldn’t bark at points (it’s a barky breed) Bar man left us at door whilst he went back & forth deciding if we were allowed in. In the end felt unwelcome & frustrated so myself, Partner, baby & dog just gave up & left.

Lovely country pub in the middle of nowhere! Went here for a wake which was being held here one afternoon. Food was absolutely delicious, and I loved the ambience of an old country pub with a dog by the wood fire ! Would definitely make the trip out here.

Incredible homely fresh cooked food. Generous on amount and every dish is.perfect. Cannot fault. Lovely community atmosphere and always lovely service. Highly recommend.

What can I say, the food was great, you couldn't leave hungry, there was no room for dessert, maybe next time I'll do it.

Very very impressed! So tasty and lots of it, boy were we struggling, the perfect Sunday roast, modestly priced too. Just a few miles from where we live so we'll be back!

Friendly staff and great food, good value for money.

We had a large party of people to eat here together. The food and staff were fantastic. I was expecting some of the food to be cold but everyone's meal was hot and delicious. They catered very well indeed for people with food allergies and intolerances. The decor was beautifully done, and the bathrooms were good enough to live in. The only negative comment would be that service between courses was far too long. And several people had already left before the desert was brought out.

Best place to eat out in Devon.

Stopped in to refuel prior to continuing the Two Moors Way. My next option for camping was miles away but the staff of the London offered up their field instead. Great news and in jumpedcat the opportunity. Thankyou all.

Amazing lunch. Lots of walks around the area to build up the appetite and, by heavens, you need one. The fishcakes and roast were amazing and lovely to see Sam's the great local cider on tap. Nice beer garden with a couple of lovely pods We will return

We went there last Wednesday evening and met up with friends whilst on holiday. Probably the best pub meal I've ever eaten. So much food and all of it cooked to perfection. I'd skip lunch if you're planning to eat there, you won't regret it!

Not for the feint hearted - portions sizes are enormous

I have been here twice with my family. Once for Sunday lunch and once on a Friday evening. The food is excellent and plenty of it. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and very welcoming. I will definitely be back next time I am in Morchard Bishop.

Fantastic pub, fantastic food, good beer, well worth a visit

Whilst doing the 2 moors way in reverse, as a novice walker we came across this little gem! They couldn't have been more hospitable. Amazingly large food portions, even offered to let us camp in garden if we were in a bind (not sure if this service will be readily available high season unless you have incredible charisma). Highly recommend a visit in their newly refurbished digs!!!

OH MY GOD!!!! THIS PLACE IS FAB Ate and drank here, 6 of us. Food/beer/cider was amazing. So much food - we took it with us and ate the leftovers for lunch. Very well priced too. The girl behind the bar is, I think, 92 and still works there - served behind that bar since the 40s - forgive if my local intel proves a bit off. And they have scarry local legends - see pic. Will be back x

First visited the London Inn and met Vera back in 2012 while my partner and I were completing the Two Moors Way. What a fantastic pub on several levels really great food with big portions plus Vera the lovely landlady is the icing on the cake.<br/>Vera tends the bar and Sarah her daughter serves up delicious food in the kitchen. We live in Dorset so have only managed to visit two more times since 2012, the last visit was at lunchtime on the 1st August 2019, but we will be back before 2020. Don't miss the steak and ale pie followed by raspberry pavlova ! Excellent pub.

Whenever I am in this part of Devon I always make a point of coming here, especially if I am hungry. Vera, the landlady, is an absolute star. The food is delicious with large portions, and there is good real ale. A proper pub that is part of the community but very welcoming to visitors as well. It is close to the Two Moors Way long distance footpath.

A pub for people with big appetites, enjoyed our meal, will probably go back.

Food was delicious and great size portions. Shame the family celebration at the London Inn was ruined by the bar staff who was very rude to us just before we left. Shame as we all really enjoyed this public house until then. Would say I'd go back but I doubt I will now.

Great country pub....fantastic food!

Even if it weren't the only pub in town I would enjoy popping in for a pint and a game of pool. No nonsense, no TVs, just old world charm. If you see a stranger sat by himself, chat him up, it might be me!

Ahaa, a fine a Devon haunt as you would ever find. I was raised on Veras gammon and chips, and I hope to feast on them plenty more before my time is up. This may not be big city dining, but what is lost in finesse is made up for in quality and quantity. Good people lurk here among the good beer and good food. Try the cider, Sams Poundhouse was brewed but a few miles from here.
