My wife and baby daughter and I went here for lunch the other week after a recommendation from a friend. The venue is quite hidden away around the back of a car park so you wouldn’t know it was there if you didn’t know. Although there are signs on the main strip so the observant individuals may notice. The cafe is in an old style stone building and situated in the upper level. However they have outdoor seating downstairs and a little takeout shop selling a lot of what they have upstairs, for those that want to nip in and dash. We had a buggy and were ready to tackle some stairs but fortunately they have a lift. The cafe upstairs is bright and open. I kind of got a Scandinavian vibe with all the wooden furniture but it also felt like being at the seaside with all the light colours around. It definitely didn’t feel we were at the back of a car park in Haddington, let’s put it that way. The service was very good, particularly from a couple of the more mature ladies who were super friendly and welcoming. It’s amazing how people are always way nicer to you when you have a baby, especially a super cute one like ours. Anyway, instead of menus we chose our grub from the enormous black board on the wall. I like the fact they are saving paper on not having menus but those with weaker vision may need to sit closer to the board or else they may need to do a bit of hovering. I am glad we didn’t sit underneath the blackboard as you would get many looking over you. There is plentiful options on the menu, offering a range of hearty breakfasts, including full Scottish options, toasties, and smashed avocado, alongside light all-day meals like ploughman’s platters, salads, and jacket potatoes. They also feature vegetarian and vegan dishes, as well as small portions for kids. All food is made with local ingredients where possible. Nearly everything is also made in store. The sourdough bread is bought in from Bakery Andante in Edinburgh. For drinks we got a couple of hot chocolates, made from chocolate that is from local suppliers. Both of these were very good. The wife opted for the sausage roll and carrot and coriander soup. The sausage roll tasted nice and was quite a substantial size, but unfortunately it wasn’t heated all the way through. I don’t think it was quite “legendary” nor worth £8.25. My wife wasn’t a massive fan of the soup, as she felt the coriander was a bit too overpowering, but she did eat most of it and the bread it came with was lovely. I went for the daily special of chicken, mozzarella and roasted pepper baguette with sundried tomato mayo which was enjoyable. The bread was crisp, the flavours of the chicken, cheese and peppers worked well and certainly enhanced by the mayo. I also wanted to try their “Best Cheese Toastie Ever!”. Unfortunately I found this to be underwhelming, partly because I had high hopes with a name like that. It tasted nice and I did enjoy it but I’ve had far better countless times. The bread was great but the filing was lacking in volume, especially at a price tag of £8.50!! Maybe change the name to “The most expensive cheese toastie ever!”. Upon leaving we decided to take away a few homemade sweet treats which were delicious. The highlight of our visit here wasn’t the amazing service, nor was it comfortable and spacious venue but it was seeing our 5 month old sit independently for the first time!! I have since been back to The Loft but instead of going upstairs I went to the shop and got a takeaway. The lady serving was certainly duller than the gems last time but the cake and chocolate I got was excellent. Overall, I’d say a 4 star is fair.

Jeanette and I popped in here for a coffee break before setting off on today's walk. The place is clearly very popular with locals - despite being away from the main roads it was very busy. The coffee was very good and so was Jeanette's gingerbread. My cheese scone was pretty much the best I've ever had. The only slight downside was that it was quite noisy, but nothing much can be done about that given the high ceiling.

Food and servers were really lovely! We enjoyed our visit but was soured slightly by the floor manager’s attitude. Clearly in a rush and was quite rude - overheard comments about people being ‘slow to leave’ about 2 steps from our table and our glasses were lifted and cleared away by her before we had actually left without a word being said to us. Rest of the staff were so pleasant and up for a chat. Unfortunately would be unlikely to come back.

Baked Potato was dry, undercooked with chucks and needed butter, not enough filling either for the potato. I think it was over £7? Salad needed dressing. It just all looked bland to me and unappealing, i was sick from it afterwards and i felt i really wasted money. Service needs to be more organised, customers need to know what’s happening and if there’s delays etc you need to say. I seen a lot of tables waiting for a long time to be served too, waitresses running about the place. Simple communication like “i’ll be with you in just a second” to avoid customers feeling ignored and always acknowledging customers when they’re waiting to be seated instead of just walking away. Checking back on tables to make sure everything is okay with the food. Small improvements of basic communication like that can be made to make the service much better.

We had a lovely lunch here, Easter weekend. We both had the ploughman's with courgette & dill soup which was delicious. As it was such a lovely lunch it would have been rude not to sample the home made cakes. Again delicious and served by very friendly staff. I had done my homework to find this café as we took our 2 dogs with us. Only slight downside was that when it was full and busy it seemed a little noisy, echoing with the tall ceiling. Plus it was not well advertised outside so didn't find it straight away but it was worth hunting down. Highly recommend this venue for good wholesome food, excellent service and not over priced. I’ll preface this review by saying that I’ve been to the Loft many times before and never had a problem with gluten free food however I came in for brunch and ordered a gluten free bacon roll and gluten free carrot cake (server went to kitchen to check) and server said it was gluten free when it was served however a few hours later I began to feel very unwell and subsequently been very sick and faint. I did not eat anything before or since brunch at the Loft. I phoned the Loft and spoke to the manager, who whilst being apologetic and did take details about order etc did not offer any compensation or refund and did say they couldn’t say it was definitely them who had ‘glutened’ me, again I pointed out that this was the only place I had eaten so there was no other way I could’ve had a reaction. The manager did take my name & telephone number to get back to me on but unfortunately very disappointed about how it’s been handled and won’t be returning and have now lost confidence in ordering at the Loft.
