Signals Bistro in East Lothian

Literally just got up and walked out after reading the menu prices. We were here last summer for lunch, had one of the best bowls of Cullen skink soup to date, came back specifically for that today as in the area, only to find that for one bowl of soup as a starter was £9.95 or for a large bowl of the same is now priced at £15.95! FOR A BOWL OF SOUP! I know it’s a tourist hotspot, but take off your Dick Turpin masks No 12!!

Oh dear! We have been to No12 loads of times, usually for drinks but we decided to treat ourselves to lunch. I ordered the grilled jerk chicken open sandwich with fries and salad. Sounds delish, right? Wrong. I’ll start with the positive! The salad had a nice dressing and the chips were fresh… the ‘sandwich’ on the other hand was awful. If I’m ordering an ‘open sandwich’ I don’t expect the whole thing to fit into the palm of my hand. Basically it was a small single slice of very dry and tough sourdough, with a little bit of green on top, then a cold sliced small chicken fillet (cut in to 4 of the smallest mini strips) on top in jerk chicken. If I’m ordering a grilled chicken sandwich I thought it would’ve been hot. But apart from that & even if that wasn’t the case, it wasn’t tasty at all and there was very little of it. It was so dry I had to ask for butter for the slice of bread. Even then the bread was hard to chew. I was so disappointed. Of course I didn’t say anything because 1. The service and staff were brilliant. 2. It’s awkward having to send food back. I shouldn’t have to do that. So instead I’ll just not order food from there again. We had lunch in the Ship Inn across the road the following day and it so made up for it. Absolutely delicious.

DO have the open sandwich! Preceded by an excellent soup, we enjoyed a very good open salmon sandwich in pleasant surroundings.

Amazing Sunday lunch. Beef melted in your mouth. Huge portions. So tasty. Highly recommend.

Much better than traditional fish & chips and other pizzerias!

We both ordered the grilled jerk chicken open sandwich– £10.95 with mango and chilli chutney. A small amount of chicken served on dry bread, a drizzle of chilli, miniscule amount of chips and even less salad. What a disappointment and rip off tbh. Complete with poor service. The meal itself lacked all imagination, content and flavour....insulting charging 10.95.

Great service and great food, dog friendly too.

Stayed here for several nights on a recent golf trip. Lots of positives: very friendly staff, great rooms with large bath areas and nice hot showers. Great location, a short walk to many restaurants and shops of North Berwick. I think that most golfers would be quite pleased with the accommodations.

Absolutely shocking customer service. I was in ten minutes before I decided to change to outside seating but we came back inside as I was cold. Only to be told I couldn’t sit inside even though the other waiter assigned me that seat previously. It was not reserved and the bottle of water I hadn’t even opened was still sitting there. There was nobody at the tables either. Whoever was running the shift did not want us in for some obscure reason. Rude and obviously not LGBT friendly.

We stumbled on this fabulous Hotel. Bistro for lunch. Service was fabous, we were made to feel very welcome, the coffee was the best I had tasted in ages. Then came the food, just wow. Amazing. This is a must go to you will not be disapointed.

Popped in for lunch, beautiful wee bistro the food was amazing, however their service let them down or would have given 5 stars. The gentleman was very short with us when we enquired about a table. Once we were seated we had to ask for the menus after sitting for 10 mins.

Didn't stay in the hotel but the restaurant had some banging food I absolutely loved the classic burger my sister got some squid dish I thought it was mozzarella sticks, it wasn't 🫤 never tried squid and I don't think Ill try it again Server was lovely The whole place had a nice atmosphere to it 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ loved, it except the squid

Was recommended by the Rocketeer restaurant to eat at this restaurant as it was full. The customer service was very good and the food was tasty. Very happy with this restaurant!

We had a wonderful evening.Thanks to excellent service and ambience.Realky appreciated the locally sourced food which was cooked beautifully.Best mussels I’ve had in ages.The waiter was friendly and attentive.Liked the train above the bar- quirky.

We stayed at the local Haven site and went for a venture out, North Berwick was amazing and we chose to eat here and the food was amazing the service was outstanding. very welcoming and would recommend it to anyone. 10/10

I stopped in here for a cooked breakfast on Monday morning (29.7.24) and it was awful. Where to start, they can't make a cappuccino. It should be served in a small cup, not a mug. It should also be 180ml max. I received a small latte in a mug. I advised the waitress that I did not want it and was quickly interrogated as to what was wrong with it. Was it the milk, the foam or the temperature? Well how about, it's not a cappuccino and it's in a mug! I ordered a cooked breakfast and then realised it did not come with toast and so had to order toast separately. The toast was fine. Nothing wrong with it. I ate it. The breakfast was diabolical. The only freshly cooked item on the plate was the egg and the rest of it was poor quality and had clearly been sitting in a warming oven for a while. The potato scone was rock solid. The single sausage was poor quality. I tried it then I ripped it in half and gave it to my whippets. I spent the next 30 seconds looking at the rest of the items on the plate before finishing my toast and going to the bar to pay for what I needed to pay for. The toast and they had the cheek to charge me for the cappuccino too. I gave them £5.55 which they did not deserve and i left to look for somewhere to find a breakfast. I found a full cooked breakfast along the road at the Rocketeer restaurant. It was amazing. Cooked to order, butcher quality and piping hot with everything Number 12 offered as well as a few other breakfast items on top. Beans, mushrooms etc. If you are ever in north Berwick and looking for a full cooked breakfast get yourself down to the Rocketeer restaurant. It is the same price as number 12 charge and it was fantastic. The chef or kitchen staff at Number 12 should be looking for a new job. Whoever made my breakfast there was lazy. The manager (i think) was a nice guy with long-ish hair. He removed the breakfast from the bill and up until the point where he decided to tell me I was wrong and it was cooked to order I found him to be pleasant enough. I had not yet advised anyone that I used to be a chef so I let him dig a hole and then told him and left. He just said "well , I am not going to argue with you about it". Good idea son! Good idea!

Fantastic as ever . New menu is a winner. Chicken sweetcorn soup , smoked haddock mornay and chicken balmoral all superbly prepared and presented . Highly recommended. Service excellent.

A neat setting, impeccable service, perfect cooking of the sea bass on its skin. A very good place for dinner before a digestive stroll on the beach to admire the magnificent sunset. The only downside: the cooking of the mussels... A little tight.

Went for a late lunch. The staff are all friendly and helpful. The big disappointment was dessert. The cheesecake had to be the tiniest portion ever on an oversize plate. At £8.95 I did not consider it represented value for money. My fellow diners fared better with their choice of dessert.

Did not stay overnight only used the restaurant. Service was very good, this place was really busy, we did not have a reservation but they fitted us in, best to book in advance. The food was nicely cooked and presented, the portions are very adequate. Right near the golf course so popular with golfers.

Food is lovely as are the staff, we really enjoyed our visit. Only knocked off a star as the wine is so overpriced at £9 odds a glass although this is probably to encourage you to buy a bottle at around £26. As we were only stopping for a lite bite it wasn't really an option Didn't see the rooms therefore i don't feel I can comment on them.

Brilliant food. The breakfast is amazing. Couldn't fault the service and even though it's a small room, the atmosphere is great. Really friendly place. Would definitely recommend.

Revisited number 12 after a great lunch previously. This was equally as good. We both had battered fish and chips. The quality was first class as was the service and prices. Look forward to revisiting in our next trip to north Berwick.

We have not stayed in the hotel but have regularly eaten in their bistro. We usually go to North Berwick twice a year and always include this place on our list to go to for dinner at least once. They have undertaken a refurbishment of the restaurant area about 2-3 years ago and it looks great. Really nice atmosphere and decor. Staff are always very attentive and our latest visit was no different. We had the pate starter, chicken Diane, steak pie and kids fish & chips and mac and cheese - all of which were very nice. They do Cullen skink which I wish I had ordered after spotting a lady at the next table with it. It looked like a hearty main and will definitely be on my list to try next time. They had some cocktails on the menu too which was a nice to see. I opted for the After Eight cocktail instead of a dessert which was pretty punchy but tasty! Good meal all round and would recommend.

Would not recommend. Myself and family came this afternoon for Sunday roast as advertised. Booked yesterday and advised Sunday roast would be available. Table wasn't ready when we arrived. Waited 10 minutes to be seated. Given menus, at this time waiter should have advised what wasn't available on the menu. This did not happen. Food bland, nothing special. Staff very slow, talking to each other or not to be seen. No one came up to ask how our meal was either and had to wait ages to get a staff members attention to get the bill. Would AVOID!!!

Great wee bistro but you may need to book. Inside was full when I visited Saturday lunchtime but there were tables outside. There is additional capacity in a beer garden round the back but it was still closed for the winter Great "dirty chips"

Small restaurant / bistro in a hotel. We had lunch on a wet Thursday. Busy but service efficient and friendly. Looked after my wife’s allergy.

We didn't stay in the hotel but if its anywhere as nice as the food and service of restaurant I'd recommend it to . Thee best homemade soup and amazing toasties... Thank You No 12 ... perfect after sending our wee dog over the rainbow bridge .

Nice ambience, good menu and service, and all three of us enjoyed our respective meals. Top marks for the cullen skink and the steak pie. The wine was reasonably priced and palatable. All in all a very pleasant, value for money evening.

The bistro was delicious. We got the steak sandwiches. Good prices, great environment and friendly service.

We had a splendid lunch at No12 today. Exceptional fish and chips, great sticky toffee pudding, and a warm fire.

I can talk about the Bistro: what gorgeous steak and fries with onion and tomatoes. Friendly staff, pet friendly restaurant. Well located, downtown, close by all amenities, a few steps from the beach.

Served quickly - and food ok, nothing outstanding. The big let down was the totally indifferent staff. Lack of any real engagement, felt a bit like a race to get you in, get you out! Other places in N. Berwick do the whole experience better.

Came here for breakfast. It was awful. Could not even cut the veggie sausage. It was like a very, very poor Travelodge breakfast. Also ordered toast as an 'extra' which came after we had finished (what we could eat) because apparently other people had to get their's first, which is ironic as the only other people inside nearly left due to the time it was taking to get anything. The person serving also seemed totally confused the whole time. This is my first ever Google review but want to either save you money by not going there or at least lower your expectations significantly.

Can't comment on the rooms as I haven't stayed there. I have eaten in the restaurant though. Staff are friendly and attentive. Good is great and really well priced. A little gem of a place. If in North Berwick I would highly recommend No.12.

Went for breakfast, we had lovely rolls and fresh coffee with friendly service with a smile. Great place. They have a good range of breakfasts on offer from filled rolls to full breakfasts, with lots of nice offerings like salmon, scrambled eggs etc. It was a lovely sunny day so we sat outside in the garden at the back, which is a lovely sheltered and peaceful spot with the sun coming in. Our server was lovely and took our order with a smile. Would recommend..

We went there on three separate occasions where we enjoyed something from the breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. We sat out the back (we had our dog). Very polite friendly staff, delicious food, and a relaxed and informal atmosphere with a great service.

Fantastic food but my goodness do not come here if you want a normal lunch. The servers don’t actually serve you, it is very difficult to have less than an hour meal and multiple drinks.

Friendly service. Good food although morning rolls a bit expensive. Good location.

Really disappointing food. Overcooked burger and deep fried Tex Mex burger. I wasnt sure I got the lamb burger as I couldnt taste lamb, mint or harissa sauce. Rolls crumbled as if frozen. Waitress got our drinks order wrong then argued it was our fault. Everyone said before that this was a great place. Maybe an off day.

Service here was almost nonexistent, and there was only one other table besides us. The workers stayed at the bar chatting instead of actually working. The beer tasted like vinegar, and that's with 3 people having it so something was definitely off.

Brilliant place to visit, great Beer Garden

4 night stay in early May. Booked 3 single rooms for golf tour. Rooms very clean, very very warm, had windows open all the time, decent shower and bathroom, daily clean & restock with beverages and biccies. Breakfast are superb, everything from full scottish, salmon, porridge, nice big portions, vegan and veggie catered for. Evening meals well worth it in the restaurant, great value. The team are lovely & friendly, nice people working very hard. Location is brilliant for exploring North Berwick and the harbour on foot, there's a car park out the back. Within 20 minutes drive its in easy reach of many tremendous golf courses including at least 2 in North Berwick itself. No bar as such but you can get drinks in the restaurant, though just headed out to the The Ship inn a few steps down the road nearby. Love this place.

Fabulous restaurant! Well worth a visit. We didn't stay here, but the food was fantastic and the wine was lovely. Service was great! We will be back!

Lovely little hotel right in the centre of town. I had a lovely spacious room, everything was very clean & comfortable and I really enjoyed the food on offer in the bar downstairs. Didn't have time to enjoy the outdoor seating at the back but thought it looked fab. Really nice, friendly staff - could'n't fault it and would happily stay again.

Nice decor, lovely waitress but poor breakfast. Cremated toast and hard poached eggs! Who can't poach an egg?! Not the chef here obviously

We went to the garden part of the Bistro for lunch, we just wanted soup and panini which we asked all be served at the same time, that was two soups and one panini. The soup came within an acceptable time but we waited and waited for the panini and eventually decided to cancel it as it was taking way too long after the soup. Nice food but badly let down by a) slow kitchen and b) inexperience staff who don’t seem well trained nor to care too much … disappointing. It’s such a shame businesses let themselves down like this, easily remedied though with a bit of focus on kitchen service and follow through timings to the table.

We arranged a family get together in advance and the communication and arrangements were all made effortlessly and clearly. Half of our group were held up in traffic and so we were late for our original booking…the hotel happily forgave us and we were able to push things back to accommodate the late arrivals! The service was friendly, efficient and seamless. The food itself was fresh, beautifully prepared and the portions were generous! I couldn’t fault any of it and would definitely recommend no12!

Great tasting food and they place had a generally good feel to it, but the tables are a bit too close to one another. That's not enough to stop me going back again, though.

Excellent meal. Could do with better selection of alcohol free beer.

We booked although didn't need to for early Tuesday lunch. Quite busy. Food and staff were pleasant - had wild mushroom risotto. Clean. May go back.

Popped in for lunch and were lucky to get a table given how quickly the Bistro filled up. All manner of deliciousness is available, we opted for panini - Tuna Mayo, Brie bacon and cranberry, both superb. Next time I’m in north Berwick, a beautiful town by the way, I shall be a returning customer.

My partner and me went for a meal this evening and i had the homemade steak pie, it was delicious and meat perfect, and my partner had the curry, he said it was lovely, then for deserts had the panacotta, well just delicious. The service was excellent and very attentive, thankyou.

First impressions are very good, we arrived for our 2 night stay at no12 hotel and bistro, nice check in with a friendly welcome, up to our room (no 4) and very impressed, lovely large comfortable bed, large room with lots of space and nice decor to the room and fantastic bathroom, totally impressed, you get a real nice vibe at this hotel, totally recommend

A smaller menu that some places but the food has been excellent on the multiple times we have visited.

Great location and free parking at the back. Ideal to walk around the town. Good food, but no bar area. Outside area at the back. Room was spotless, would definitely stay there again.

Came Fri lunch time after 1, one table with people all rest available. I approached waitress and asked for table for 2, she said sit anywhere. We sat down, girl came over asked what we wanted to drink, asked for 2 half pints lager shandy, she asked what food, but we hadn’t even looked at menu or got our coats off so we said we need to look first. She came back with drinks, wasn’t a shandy as too strong, not enough lemonade in either. Was going to tell her but changed my mind. We sat a while and she never came over to take our food order, place was empty so I couldn’t understand why. I kept looking over to bar and eventually one of the 3 girls came over. We ordered and waited till it came. After eating our plates lay for a while. I ended up with other lager as daughter didn’t enjoy it . Usually staff do come over and ask if alls ok and do u want another drink, absolutely nothing from any of them. I ended up going up to bar and asking for bill, all 3 of them standing doing nothing. We left and noone even said goodbye. I left no tip which isn’t like me but not one of them deserved it. Customer service training is needed. I will not return or recommend anyone going !

One star is for the service. Waitress was nice and professional. No stars for the food. Partner send the breaded haddock back twice because it was pre-fried and burned after refrying. Finally left without diner. Bad day in the kitchen? Not enough staff there? No clue but do not recommend

The place looked amazing and friendly. We were seated in a lovely sunny corner. Placed a food and drinks order which was fine. Food was too basic and bland and my main never arrived ? No one came near us once food got put down so we tried to grab someone to ask when the rest of our food would arrive ? So once they came to clear our plates and ask if we wanted the bill! (Not dessert or a other drink) I mentioned my food never showing up. She said of right do you want it now???! Not the best

Second visit in two days, well worth it. Mussels outstanding value, Rib-Eye succulent, Lamb Jalfreze very authentic. Staff:. Ollie & Hassan very attentive to our visit. 100%.

Very nice hotel and bistro. Shame there was no lift as my daughter had too carry her daughter's pram up and down the stairs. Bit loud at night with doors shutting but it is a very lovely hotel and would be back in the future.

We had lunch today, I had Fish and Chips, salad and homemade Tartre sauce. Fish was ok, cheap, frozen style chips, salad was warm and not fresh, Tartre sauce was warm, must have been sitting out for ages.£14+ Another member of our group had Sea bass, fish was oily and had bitter taste from oil and skin soggy. Service was very good. Very disappointed by the food 😕 won't be back.
