We have had several meals at the Carfraemill in the past few months and they were all excellent. The service is friendly and helpful and the portions are very generous and the prices are very reasonable. Would definitely recommend!

There were 4 of us. We had a good meal tho my chicken was overdone. They catered well for gf and large portions. ( great chips !) What made it so enjoyable was the delightful Aussie waitress Georgia. She was new , her second day and doing her best to learn the ropes. She was so welcoming and friendly.

Called in for Sunday lunch as this hotel is close to where we are staying. The menu looked promising and the decor was really nice with pleasant waiters. However, when our lunches were served we both looked at each other as we could tell by looking at the plates that we were going to be disappointed. The roast beef was served with a large yorkshire pudding, 3 small roast potatoes that were soggy rather than crispy a huge portion of red cabbage that had lost all its colour, undercooked broccoli and a small portion of carrots that were tasty (the best thing on the plate) There was a very small coating of watery gravy on the meat. The meat was tough and had no flavour and the whole thing was only luke warm. A bit disappointing

Staff very friendly and attentive. Only issue is the temperatures of the food. We had two kinds of soup, one was hot and the other was cold. Same issue with the mains, macaroni and posh chips (highly recommended) were piping hot, however, the steak ciabatta and garlic bread were cold. I would recommend return.

The food was very disappointing. We had been here many years ago, and the experience was well down on that time. Staff were ok, but didn’t make up for the average and over priced food. If you are staying locally, suggest better to find a pub in one of the nearby towns.

We stopped here on the way to Scotland. The breakfast was cooked to order, and was very fresh and hot when arrived. The evening meal was good as well. Only problem with the room the hot water took ages to come through, wasted so much water waiting for it to come through. Needs a bit of modernisation the room a bit dated needs a bit of a re vamp.

Table was grubby with peeling varnish - not great start. Meal served on bare table !!. Starters fairly tasty but presentation poor. Main courses not quite what was on the menu - pointed out - nothing done !!. Large plates with emphasis on loads of cheap chips and greenery. Not impressed. Decor so dark one lady had to go to window to read her menu. Needs serious improvement for any return business especially at those prices.

For anyone in, or passing through, the Scottish Borders, OH and I would thoroughly recommend Carfraemill Hotel on the jumction of the A68 and A697. Towing our caravan home from a trip limits the places you can easily stop to pick up a bite, but we thought we'd try the Carfraemill and ask if they'd let us eat a meal in our van - (we're clinically vulnerable, so can't eat inside)... ...not only was it no problem whatsoever, a very helpful and accommodating member of staff, Charlie, brought it out to the van, condiments and all. Charlie also offered us an indoor room that hadn't been used that day, which was very kind, but it's always safer in a space that we can personally guarantee. It was also excellent, so heartily recommended.

Good local ingredients but menu seemed basically unchanged since we visited in December. Even though we’d booked, arrived in good time & the place wasn’t busy we had a long wait for our main courses. Two of the mains (one a roast) were served in bowls making them extremely awkward to eat. Overall the food was good but the experience spoiled by the delay in service & awkward crockery.

Oh dear! This used to be a lovely place to eat. The current management leaves a lot to be desired. Staffing all very amateurish. Several items missing from the menu because "they were waiting for deliveries." Couldn't even remember to bring the requested water to table. Food perfectly acceptable but nothing very exciting although still relatively expensive. I notice that the accompanying photos on this site are from the days of previous ownership. Nothing like as cosy now. Not in a hurry to revisit.

Small double room with small double bed, small to, and dated furniture. Stayed for two nights front door locks at 9pm with guests given a code for access. Okay but no lighting to let you see the key lock. They get three stars due to excellent staff in particular the gentleman on duty at breakfast which was also excellent. Need to refurbish and start opening hotel hours. 9pm closing for bar/restaurant with letting rooms really is not good enough.

Food awful, waiter awful(Dave) , dirty glasses waited over an hour for disgusting food ,would not recommend,. Really don't know what has happened to this place as I have dinned here many a time and never had such bad food & service .Shame really as it is a half way point for our family to meet. Think the waiter needs to get a crash course on hospitality & get some decent chefs, then things might improve. Very disappointed

This place is an experience. We ordered and then changed our order 30 seconds later We were served the original order - which was not really a problem until the food arrived. I ordered a burger which was served in a bun so hard that we couldn't cut into it. We mentioned this to the staff who were absolutely fine with it. We weren't charged for it. Then a lady possibly the manager came out and argued with me. Not impressed. Not happy. Not returning.

We had lunch here at the weekend on the way back from a few days in Edinburgh. It's just off the A68 with plenty of parking so was a super convenient place to stop. The atmosphere was good with quiet background music and the seats were comfy (this is a priority for me, an uncomfy seat can ruin a good meal!) We didn't have our dog with us but did notice that it was dog friendly which is nice to know as a lot of places aren't these days. It was quite busy but the staff were still friendly and efficient, they were attentive without being intrusive. The food was great and there was plenty of it! Kept us going all the way home, will certainly stop there again next time we come north.

I have visited Carfraemill restaurant for around 40 years on my business travel to and from Scotland. In the past everything about my visits and restaurant food has been superb. In recent times i stopped for Sunday lunch and experienced a dreadful meal, I believed this must be a one off poor ordeal and stopped off yesterday for my evening dinner. The quality of food was appalling, i do not know where the steak served, was sourced or from what animal it came from. The steak had at least 45% FAT content with not much meat left to eat. Sadly the quality of ingredients served in the food at Carfraemill is now distasteful and shameful, shocking beyond belief. From one of the best restaurants in Scotland, enjoyed for many years, Carfraemill What Have You Become Mr J Longstaff

Visited this restaurant several times with family when catching up over the years and always good food, however our latest visit was my hubby and myself. Both ordered the beef Sunday dinner. Ordered drinks which were delivered and not what we had ordered. The food was a big let down. The beef was so fatty there was almost nothing left when the fat was cut away. The roast potatoes were hard and uncooked in the middle as were the Carrots. £40 for a meal that we ate hardly any of. Don't think we will be back.

It's been a while since we ate at Cobbles. Ate in the bar as its dog friendly. Very friendly service and great Tempest brewery beers. For me, a measure of pub food is the chicken burger - will it be succulent or like a rubber duck? This one was perfectly succulent, but I was as impressed by the little dressings applied to the skinny fries. Quite different, all very tasty. Wife ordered fish & chips.....fish locally is always super fresh given the location, but she too thought the dressings and sauces were both different & delightful. So a very pleasant lunch experience.

Inflexible rules on Gift Vouchers. The GM, Kevan Potter refused to extend our 7- month out of date GV for its mere £50 value; we had proposed to spend a significant amount more on a two night D, B & B stay. As a result, we’ll avoid this Hotel and spend our money at a more empathetic venue. We’ve lost our £50 but what’s the “cost” to your establishment? Short sighted attitude.
