Called in for Sunday lunch as this hotel is close to where we are staying. The menu looked promising and the decor was really nice with pleasant waiters. However, when our lunches were served we both looked at each other as we could tell by looking at the plates that we were going to be disappointed. The roast beef was served with a large yorkshire pudding, 3 small roast potatoes that were soggy rather than crispy a huge portion of red cabbage that had lost all its colour, undercooked broccoli and a small portion of carrots that were tasty (the best thing on the plate) There was a very small coating of watery gravy on the meat. The meat was tough and had no flavour and the whole thing was only luke warm. A bit disappointing

Popped in last night for an evening meal. We’ve been regular visitors for several years. The food was ok, pretty mediocre and expensive for what it was. Desserts obv frozen. Some really loud foul mouthed people drinking at the bar, the bar stools situated right next to diners! I’m not a beer drinker but my husband said all beer on offer was from the big breweries, there’s so many local breweries around it’s a shame not to support them. Service was poor, had to wait ages for drinks orders to be taken, be given menus etc. unfortunately this place is a shadow of its former self. Won’t return as there’s many other better options locally.

Staff very friendly and attentive. Only issue is the temperatures of the food. We had two kinds of soup, one was hot and the other was cold. Same issue with the mains, macaroni and posh chips (highly recommended) were piping hot, however, the steak ciabatta and garlic bread were cold. I would recommend return.

This was our first visit since it changed hands. We loved the old Carfraemill and now love the refurb and new menu! The staff were all efficient and polite. The food was delicious and the service quick. We finished our meal with a Chocolate fudge cake which had loads of sauce and was big enough for us to share.!Thank you for a lovely evening.

Hadn’t visited since it was taken over & was well impressed with the refurb. The place looks great & is very inviting & much more modern. Sadly our welcome wasn’t that inviting & the service throughout our meal was mediocre. No chat from staff & often things brought to the table after a wait & without comment. We weren’t bowled over with the food either. The chicken schnitzels were ‘well cooked’ & served with lukewarm chips. The Caesar salad was ok. At no time did anyone check back to see if our meals were ok. Some of the staff seemed new to the job so allowances can be made for that but the manager on duty wasn’t particularly interested. The menu on the website isn’t the same as the one offered so don’t decide what you’re having from the web as it likely won’t be on the menu when you get there. I’d been looking forward to a bang bang chicken salad but it wasn’t in the menu, when we arrived. As someone reviewed earlier, the Black Bull food is better in Lauder but the surroundings here are nicer. That would sum it up.

I had a steak pie which had a tough piece of meat and a separate chunk of fat - yuk. It was accompanied by the small yellow (obviously frozen) soggy chip. The vegetables were overcooked which is ok if you don't any any teeth. What is wrong with chefs? Chips should be nicely browned and it's a pretty poor excuse and lazy to use frozen.I decided to risk dessert and had a mushy crumble accompanied by watered down Devonshire custard. I remember that taste from school.Having said all that, the other 3 guests enjoyed their food and would go back. I'd rather try a McDonald's - did I really just say that?If you are hoping for home-cooked quality cuisine then this is not the place. Decor is completely out of date. Owner / manager looks about as happy as a fish out of water. There are much better to places to eat in the Borders and sadly this is not one of them.

We called into the Carfrae Mill Hotel on our way to Edinburgh and enjoyed the best cooked breakfast we've had in decades. This was at 11 a.m but they serve breakfast till 12 noon. Hot food on hot plates - an excellent start! Locally sourced bacon and sausage, perfectly cooked, and even the flat mushrooms had the (inedible) stalks removed. My scrambeled eggs were done to perfection. Only one criticism, and that was the filter coffee which had been stewing on the hob. A fresh pot would have been good, but we didn't have time to linger. They also do a full vegitarian breakfast which looked tempting. We shall be back!

We arrived early but it wasn’t a problem. We were made to feel so welcome and given the keys to our room. The room was lovely, some might say the decor was a little tired but we think it added character. The bed was the most comfortable we have ever slept in! The bathroom was huge and had a bath and shower. Breakfast was exceptional there was a good choice cooked to perfection and all ingredients sourced locally. There is a good choice for evening meal and again excellent quality. The restaurant is open to non guests but quests staying at the hotel are always prioritised which doesn’t happen with big hotel chains. All of the staff were lovely and friendly taking time to chat and give tips on where to visit. The measures the hotel have put in place re Covid are excellent, the place is spotlessly clean and we felt very safe. We will definitely be back and we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

I know vegans are frowned upon around here and restaurants probably don’t even want our custom but we do actually still enjoy tasty food and enjoy eating out. Every restaurant I’ve been to seems to only offer tasteless food options for us. I had the spicy bean burger (which seems to generally be what every restaurant I’ve been to seems to offer for vegans). Please could I suggest your chef actually tasting this. It has no flavour, no seasoning and certainly no spice. I couldn’t eat it. Also frozen awful chips? It’s so much nicer having homemade chips, especially at the prices you charge. Why not put a nice vegi Currie or asparagus risotto on your menu. Something that’s actually tasty and tempting. We cook some lovely tasty vegan meals at home and it would be amazing to be able to go out for a tasty meal too. Sorry for being negative but I just feel so let down by the lack of choice that our borders restaurants have to offer. We end up having to go all the way to Edinburgh to get a decent tasty meal.

The starter we had was chicken liver parfait , which came quickly was acceptable. When we finished the starter, within a few minutes the main course arrived I had the mince and tatties , my friend had slow cooked lamb shank. vegetables were acceptable, but my friends lamb shank was well over cooked and hard .my mice and tatties was hot and just acceptable. At the end of the main course the waitress asked if ever thing was ok , my friend told her that lamb shank was over cooked and hard. we received an apology.we were going to order a sweet, we were going to order chocolate brownies , but was informed that there was only two sweets available, none of the two we liked . my conclusions after reading other reviews which were favourable. the chef rushing to finish at 8 o’clock, and let standards drop. we are on holiday in this area and will not be eating you again.

We met here as a very convenient place for friends from both Edinburgh and the Borders. We were seated in the bright conservatory which was pleasant. Staff were attentive. The menu was full of choice. Three of us decided on a small portion of the rare beef salad with chunky chips on the side. How disappointed we were! I have never seen a more uninspiring salad of grey and certainly not rare roast beef. There were two thin slices of this grey beef which looked like it had been left over from the weekend before, a small spoonful of potato salad and coleslaw and a garnish of salad. It is not difficult to make a salad inspiring and delicious looking and thought should be given to this for future guests. Please order something merging else and management please look at your competitors for salad inspiration!

We visited as a party of 8 for High Tea and WOW! food and service simply excellent.Three of us opted for the steak pie which was melt in the mouth steak and the lightest, flakiest puff pastry ever, four had Fish and chips, with crispy batter and fish cooked to perfection then my 13 yr old chose the Aga baked ham salad.... plate cleared including all of the salad. What more can I say??Then comes the desserts.. we were all pretty much full but couldn't resist the selection served to us. A combination of tray bakes, fruit scones and fresh cream cakes, all of which were gorgeous especially the meringues. The scones were served with butter and jam but we were offered fresh cream too. All in all a superb meal had by all, service was second to none and for the price just outstanding overall. Thank you to Lesley our server who met all of our needs and hats off the the chef Eddie, best steak pie I've EVER HAD. 100% returning next time I'm in Scotland even though I will be about a 2 hour drive away, I'll still be visiting for a meal. I am staying here tonight, Thursday 27th June while working in the Scottish Borders, prior to going to Yorkshire tomorrow.I've often seen the hotel from the road, but have never stayed or eaten here until today. The staff were very friendly, hotels rooms are a good size with lovely countryside views and its so quiet, can just hear birds in the background.I ordered the salmon blini, this was very very good, a very generous helping of salmon too so thanks very much for that. I also ordered the lamb cutlets, thinking that I might get 2 or 3 little cutlets. Wow, I got 3 really large lamb chops. They were excellent. My only regret was that the chops came with chips, I should have asked for mash, but hey ho, when I stay again that will be an option! Thanks to all the staff, so friendly and helpful!I am really looking forward to breakfast!

We hadn't been to the Carfraemill for years, but decided to pop in for Sunday lunch, after reading some good reviews, and we weren't disappointed. I had the roast beef, which was beautifully tender and the accompanying veg and Yorkshire pudding were nice too. My husband went for the "legendary" steak pie, which also lived up to its billing. Our only slight gripe, if you could call it that, was that the gravy could have been a little thicker. Our desserts of chocolate brownie and meringue were lovely too, and we felt the prices were very reasonable.

Called in for Sunday lunch today. We have driven past many times and seen the car park full so said we would try the food. Having looked on the website first we were both looking forward to the winter warmers menu only to be told when we arrived that it finished yesterday (it is snowing outside and definitely still winter here). I ordered the roast chicken with oatmeal stuffing and my husband settled for a steak pie. The chicken was dry, you could only taste the overpowering smoked bacon it was wrapped in, and the oatmeal stuffing was a tasteless paste with an unpleasant texture. The accompanying gravy had a surface covering of gooey fat and was also tasteless. My husband ate the steak pie as he was starving (he will eat anything when he gets hungry) but was disappointed too. The meat inside was like tinned steak in gravy, the pastry topping looked old and was very dry and the chips were obviously cheap frozen ones. We mentioned the chicken and gravy issues when the plates were collected as I had left most of them and the bill was reduced to compensate. Unfortunately, this did not make up for the disappointment and the food left me feeling rather nauseous. We will not return.

Our party of four arrived late in the day after exploring the Scottish Borders in the eastern part of the Southern Uplands. While we called the restaurant less than 10 minutes before arrival, we were were greeted by Chris who ushered us to a nice round table - Reserved Sign in place. Chris turned out to be a delightful host. The room was warm, cozy and yet had a goodly number of tables. We ordered drinks, starters and main courses. Everything was excellent. Locally-sourced meals were better than expected. Food quantity was surprisingly large.Appetizers included Haggis, neeps & tatties; Scotch egg; Baby roasted beets; and Hummus & crudites. All excellent. Dinner consisted of Steak Pie; Dark ale lamb shank; a dinner size Seafood appetizer consisting of Oak smoked salmon, smoked trout, prawns Marie rose, soused pickled herring served with lemon; and a vegetable & bean burger (large, kitchen-made, delicious and well presented).. The restaurant easily met our different tastes (Swiss and California) and catered to our vegetarian individual. Conversation with Chris was lively, entertaining, definitely funny and engaging. I had been telling my associates about the great dining in Scotland, and they admitted that, this country venue was indeed an excellent find with good and tasty food. My companions each had a beef salad (the menu said it was small, but it was ample in their view) and I had an antipasto board that had enough to interest and please. I used to drive past here often, many years ago, when I worked in the Borders, between the jigs and the reels I never managed to stop here. Did now.Everything about the place delighted us, the decor, the menu, the waiting staff, all were unapologetically retro Scottish country styled, like stepping back to my long lost youth. The menu carried a great spread of dishes and a lot, like my mince, tatties and doughball, were good honest food that is increasingly hard to find. My wife had a salad with the local smoked trout and it was definitely worth a mention here, it was delicate and melting. Did you want a proper apple crumble, or a bread and butter pudding with no adulteration or "modernisation", then come here. There was loads of space to eat and many table sizes, the banter with the ladies who were waiting tables was excellent and we went on our way very happy that day. Hope I get back again. Please do not change what you do, you do it brilliantly.

We ate here on mother’s day night. We hadn’t booked so we were happy to get a table here. The four of us picked from the Mother’s Day menu, two of us had roast beef , one had roast chicken and there was one fish and chips. The meals came and the three roast dinners had to go back to the kitchen as the potatoes were cold in the middle, not even warm! Quite disappointing. The three roast dinners were replaced with new plates of food with hot potatoes! The food was well presented and tasty. We all had a sweet to finish , again well presented and good. The bill came and was surprised that we were charged full price , not that I expected a huge amount to be taken off the final bill , but did expect something off. I queried this with the young waitress at the bar and she went to get the supervisor. The supervisor came and was a little bit disappointed how she handled it. She did knock something off the bill but surprised she asked if I was happy with the amount that she was going to reduce the price to. I did ask for a little bit more off the bill but settled on the supervisors first offer. All the staff were very apologetic for the cold potatoes on our plates .

Linen tablecloths and quality cutlery with a sweet table decoration met us immediately. We were shown to our table by a very pleasant young man who was polite and attentive. We selected roast beef Sunday lunch with trimmings such as Yorkshire pudding and vegetable. The Mothers Day menu was extensive and would have covered everyone’s taste buds and food preferences. The meal was delicious and we were asked on at least 3 occasions if everything was ok. We asked for extra gravy but that just our preference. We chose ice cream for pudding and could not eat another thing afterwards. All in all a lovely day for my Mum and myself. The staff were lovely welcoming and couldn’t do enough for you and the food was delicious and competitively priced. The surroundings are tasteful and comfortable. We will definitely return and we would also recommend.

We came on a Friday evening and the restaurant was quiet so we chose a table near the warm fireplace. We chose from the set menu of 3 courses for £16. We had black pudding bonbons and a wild game terrine for starters. The terrine had really tender chunks of game and was served with sauce and toast. For mains we had pan fried pheasant, with an excellent pink peppercorn sauce. Had local cheese and oatcakes to finish. Thoroughly enjoyed whole meal. The meal was really good value, well presented with friendly welcoming staff.

We went for Christmas lunch and the whole experience was excellent. From the moment we arrived the staff welcomed us as if we were family members. The dining room was really beautiful and the four course lunch was one of the best we have had,It was helped by the visit of Santa for the younger diners who behaved really well and all in all we were so glad we went,

Driving back to the north east of England from the Highlands, we stopped at this hostelry by way of a light-lunch break. Service was good, efficient and friendly. We only had sandwiches and a drink but it was fine. Decent decor, free access to newspapers and the place was busy with locals (always a good sign). Nice lunch stop en-route.

Met up for lunch with two friends from way back. Can’t fault it, quite old fashioned in a nice sort of way. I had smoked trout and prawn salad with rollmops which really hit the mark. The others had lamb chops and one had salmon steak. Clean plates and satisfied diners all round.

We booked a table for a Saturday night as we have had a meal here before some years back. And as before the meal was excellent as was the service ,even though the room was quite full and a wedding reception was taking place as well .we both had steak's and both were cooked as we had asked for .We will certainly go again when we are at the caravan site next to the restaurant.

I recently dined at Carfraemill while visiting friends in the Borders of Scotland. The menu had a wonderful selection of traditional dishes as well as steaks and other grilled items. One of my friends who needs a gluten free menu was well accommodated with loads of delicious choices. We all ordered starters. Mine was mushrooms in a garlic wine sauce and it was divine! Others ordered brie and declared it delicious. The decor was lovely and the service friendly. I would highly recommend going to Carfraemill if you want great food in a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere!

Nice place and conveniently located; not an exciting menu, but good for traditional British dishes, particularly if they involve meat. Also good for catering for larger numbers. Does not pretend to be haute cuisine, but you won't leave this place feeling hungry.

Stayed here for one night, over the festive period, as part of a large group. Firstly, I'd like to say that the staff were exceptional. Through the whole process - from booking to breakfast - the team were super helpful, accomodating, and friendly. The food: I felt this was incredibly expensive. Although delicious, the portion sizes were quite small, and so I didn't really feel it was good value for money. I also felt that the vegetables (sprouts, carrots) were a bit undercooked. However, a plus side was that they provided extra sides, shared out between the tables (Yorkshire puddings, gravy, veg etc). The room: I felt the rooms were pleasant and comfortable. They could maybe do with modernising, but they had everything we needed, and so we were pleased. The downside to the rooms was that the noise from the corridor was very loud. Whenever someone walked past, the entire floor would shake, which in turn shook the bed. The noise and the vibrations woke me maybe half a dozen times during the night, which wasn't ideal. Breakfast: A lovely choice available, from the standard continental options (cereal, fruit, yoghurt), to cooked options. The service felt a bit chaotic, but I guess that's to be expected when things are very busy. But the staff were still super helpful and lovely.

Sadly now seem to be closed. Unfortunately the Main Street of Jedburgh offers nothing in the way of dog friendly cafes... the only town in our trip across central Scotland to have that issue.

Lovely spot in Kelso centre. We looked around for somewhere which catered for gluten free and were struggling a little so when we managed to get a table here we were delighted. Bao buns starter was amazing for £6 and almost like a main course! Fish and chips were a delight too. GF soup and then burger were great and really tasty. Drinks were really good value as was the really tasty kids meal. All in a great place, great customer service and a lovely atmosphere.
