We loved this place, and one of the main reasons is because of Tom and Jack. They truly are the best people we ever met that works at the bar/reception, the approach was professional and friendly. You could talk to both of them like friends. Amazing guys. We felt so welcomed. The hotel room was nice and comfortable, beautifully made and clean. We were recommended to try Chinese food, which was the BEST Chinese we ever had. After the meal Linda wanted to place the takeaway order for taking back home for the next day, but she took too long as the chef was already gone. I must say that instead of showing plates full of food... We will do the opposite- we will show how empty they are! We weren't able to even a single bit on it- that's how tasty it was! 🤩 We found some great walks near the hotel and Chester could have a good run in fields. Even had a chance to go into some water and have a splash/splash. Linda is taking her friend to Peak District next week and first, she said to her friend: "I will take you to try Chinese at the restaurant at Little Joh Hotel".

Booked a room 4 weeks in advance requesting a ground floor room as we have an elderly dog and received email confirmation of the booking. The day before the booking I received an email to say they don't have any ground room floors so they had 'upgraded us' to one of the cottages. Presumed they had made a mistake but the upgrade sounded nice. On arrival we were shown to the Cottage and was shocked by the condition. Not only had it not been cleaned that day and had hairs all over the bathroom, leaf's and all sorts of others things all over the floors, the long term condition of the cottage was shocking.(see images attached) The shower had months worth of grime, there was holes in the wall, the bed sheet were stained, the toilet seat was falling off, the beds looked so lumpy and hard, and the floors was filthy. I complained and was told they were fully booked and couldn't do about it but they would refund me 50%. We didn't stay, so it ruined our night away, but the next day I received an email to say they would give me a full refund and asked for my bank details. At least that was one thing, However 14 days later and nothing, they wont even respond to my messages now so I've been forced to take this up with the credit card company to get my money back Seriously I wouldn't even let the dogs stay in that cottage

Very good breakfast buffet included in the room price. 3 of us walkers stayed in one room with 3 beds so very affordable for the Peak District. Young member of staff behind the bar was a great character giving us lots of recommendations of where to go. Perfect location right in the centre of the village near all the cafes and restaurants.

Fantastic hotel, great room and bathroom, dog friendly, very good breakfast, great wi-fi, superb location to start a walk towards Robin Hood Cave, very friendly staff and the price of £85 per night inc. breakfast for a couple is very affordable. We stayed for 4 nights and it was fantastic experience. Local, well stocked shop 100m from the hotel opened till 10pm was also great. Definitely will be coming back to that place.

I have stayed in many hotels in the UK but The Little John Hotel is my favorite. Mainly because of the ideal location. You can park your car and forget about it. You can go everywhere on foot, there are many paths with beautiful views. Or you can hop on a bus and go to Castleton, Bakewell, Ladybower or anywhere else for £2. The hotel itself was great, the rooms were very spacious and clean, the breakfasts were tasty and plentiful. I was here for the first time a year ago and the service was not very nice, but that has changed. This year I met a different staff and they were great! Just great guys, they will always welcome you, help you and advise you. I will come back here! 10/10 👍

Not worth the money we paid-The hotel has quite good facilities-it offers a hairdryer, a fan, tea and coffee and wifi and the rooms are spacious.. but...the room was not cleaned properly the drawers were very dirty also there was lots of damp and mildew in the bathroom. Also I had informed the hotel I was gluten free; no this is not a choice I have celiacs disease-I asked at the time of booking if they provided gluten free bread at breakfast and I was told yes. At breakfast I was told they had none-I had emailed my needs so they knew I was coming-do I not matter as much as any other guest?? Also we dined there for tea-my daughters fish and chips was full of bones the batter was not crispy and it was not a cheap menu. My salmon was advertised as having a dressing but none was provided. We paid £139:00 for the room and booked in advance. I looked today and rooms were £90:00 which is what they are worth as they are definately not worth what we paid, so its not worth booking in advance. Also our room was at the front of the hotel just under the bar. This was extremely rowdy-with what sounded like people at one point slamming glasses on a table! Also the hotel has paper cups and wooden spoons-I thought great they are looking after the planet-but no there was no separate bin so everything goes in one bin-why bother?? If your going to be environmentally friendly at least do it properly! Would not recommend and will not be booking again!

Brilliant place to stay. Some notable things below; Shower pressure was beautiful!! Absolutely perfect after the long hikes. Bed - Super Comfortable!!! Big window let's loads of light in - very nice in the morning. You can of course close the blinds if you choose. Staff are soooo friendly! They did not let down their previous pleasant reputation. Tea / biscuits availability in the rooms! Another absolute winner for us. Great!!! 24 hour access - one day we climbed Mam Tor at Sunrise so needed to leave at 4am - easy to get in and out! Breakfast is good. Nice food with large portions. Only thing I would add is more fruit - apart from that - Winner! The price - for what we paid - super happy. This list could go on and on - simply put. Great location to stay, great price, friendly staff. Will 100% stay here again!

We called in to the Little John after a long hot walk, all in need of food and drink. I was with my husband and son. We went in just expecting some average ‘pub grub’ but actually the food far exceeded our expectations! The vegetarian lasagne in particular, which was on the specials board at £10, tasted absolutely delicious and was beautifully presented. We would highly recommend.

Welcomed on arrival. Room was lovely Very spacious with a good sized on suite. Dog friendly room. Pub was busy with football but we were accommodated. Didn't have food but breakfast in morning was very good choice. Car park was full on arrival as they operate on a first come first served basis. I would recommend so many bays being 'reserved' for guests who have booked and therefore must display in vehicle that your a guest. At least then someone staying will get a space. Apart from that. Overall a nice stay. Close to shops etc. Very pleasant stay.

We went here just for food, rang in advance to be told they were only doing Chinese food not the normal menu, so decided to give it a go. Overall not bad, had to ask for our prawn crackers which are free if you spend £15 or more (we spent £40+). Also had to ask for the ribs to be heated as they came barely warm. Also the chef seemed a little off, the kitchen was near to where we sat and the lads behind the bar were pretty busy, there was some sort of doorbell to notify the staff that service was needed from the kitchen, if the staff didn’t go as soon as the bell was pressed the chef came out looking pretty annoy and obnoxiously pressing the bell over and over hence the reason for only being 4 stars.

We had a fantastic stay at The Little John Hotel! The room was brilliant - spacious, clean, and just what we needed. We enjoyed meals at the pub downstairs both nights, with friendly staff who made us feel right at home. A huge plus for us was that both the hotel and the pub were dog-friendly. Our two dogs were welcome everywhere, which made the trip even more relaxing. For walkers and explorers, this hotel is perfectly located! Arriving by train, we found it just a short walk from the station. We even used the hotel as a base for some fantastic walks, tackling both Stanage Edge and Lady Bower directly from the doorstep. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a comfortable and welcoming stay, especially with their dogs!

Spent several nights at the Little John recently. In terms of value for money, and given the location it was excellent value. Quite a large pub in the centre of the town. The room was clean and functional with good views of the surrounding hills. The staff were great. Really friendly and approachable. The full English breakfast was excellent and not holding back on the trimmings. Large bar area with a pool table and darts. Good range of ales. Food available, including a wide ranging Chinese menu. I've long lost interest in Chinese food but what I was served here was exceptional. Feel really lucky that I came across this hotel. Thanks

Room was ok, some areas within the room could do with a touch up and deep clean but was acceptable and a pleasant stay. The bed was super comfy and bedding was of good quality had a really good sleep. The restaurant and bar was a lovely atmosphere with good food and selection of drinks. We had the Chinese sit in meal and was probably one of the best Chinese meals we've had credit to the chef. Would just like to say the bar and restaurant staff were absolutely brilliant friendly and professional, the owners should be proud of them, they all make the experience and atmosphere what it is well done.

Myself and my friend stayed recently. The room was very spacious and the and the hotel was in a nice area. However - we asked about breakfast in the morning the day before and we were told we could book 09:30 in the morning. When we got down in the morning we were informed that breakfast was served at 08:00 - 09:00 this was clear that there was a communication issue with staff. There was no attempt by staff to rectify the situation in anyway. We had been given false information the night before which can happen but no attempt to put things right at the hotel by staff. There's no question the hotel is in a lovely area and is nice inside. But this experience spoilt things.

This restaurant never fails to please. We use it regularly and rate it alongside some of the best in England including the Magpie in Whitby and the 3 Pilchards in Cornwall. The fish is always fresh, the batter crispy and not too thick, the chips cooked well and lovely mushy peas. We are always served quickly and politely. We can recommend this to anyone who wants quality fish and chips at a very reasonable price. Jonathan and Christine.

Absolute shocker! Walked into a completely empty bar, staff member sitting at a table on the laptop, asked if they were serving food(6:50pm) and was told that I had to order now as the kitchen was closing. No problem, I'd checked the menu before I went, so I ordered the steak. Asked to swap the chips and mushroom tomato for a side salad. This should have been when I walked away because this was treated like I'd asked the girl if I could just eat her pet rabbit, never in my life has this been a request that required so much effort. Anyway, food comes out about 9 minutes later and I'm served with a plate of salad, some questionable onion rings, and about 6 slices of roast beef. I have been served steak sliced before, but this was most definitely left over roast beef and to top that off it was stone cold and by no means medium rare as I had requested. Fair play, she did come do a check back within a couple of minutes which is very rare these days, so I said "steak" was cold and she said sorry about that, I'll get the chef to fix it. Comes back about 5 minutes later and I don't even think the chef looked at it. "steak" still cold, onion rings now also cold. She comes back a couple of minutes later asking if everything was OK now so I say no, it's actually worse. Well, at point she starts telling me that it's because it's the salad that's making it cold and that the chef has probed these slices and they are fine and that it should be cold because I'd asked for medium rare! Incredulous, I just said fine, clearly not going to get anywhere. I worked in bars and restaurants for the best part of 10 years, managed a good few of these and if anyone I worked with ever treated a customer like that they would have been fired on the spot. I was then completely ignored for the rest of my visit like I had done something wrong even though I paid full price for my meal. Food - 0 Service - 10 Atmosphere - colder than my ex's heart
