Super pub with great selection of cask ales.

A wonderful visit, food excellent and staff super friendly and with our pensioners discount very affordable. Daisy does a amazing shandy and looked after us so well during our visit. Will be back again. Phil 👍

Visited this pub as a group of away fans before Portsmouth played Hull. We like a proper quality pub, that’s friendly and serves great food and after contacting them before our visit, we were made to feel very welcome. This pub had all we wanted, so we recommend it to all and is also in a great area called the Old Town, where there are many other quality drinking establishments. We will be re visiting soon so we can have a lot more time in the Old Town area and this pub in particular. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Great Beer, Great Food, Great Time!!

We went for an early dinner prior to the excellent Paul Weller gig. We booked a table and the pub was b usy but they squeezed us in. I had worked in Hull years ago and it was nice to see how great the Old Town is looking. The Lion and Key is a great pub. It is really atmospheric and a nice place to be. We were greeted and shown to a table and made to feel welcome. There is a great selection of beer that we had not tried before. The fish and chips were lovely. My husband managed to drop his credit card at the bar but did not realise at the time. Fortunately one of the ladies went to the trouble of checking with customers and so he was reunited with it. That would have spoiled our evening. We will definitely come back, great food and beer and friendly and caring staff which helps towards the fun atmosphere. Thank you x

Nice pub in Old Town Hull. Stopped off for a lunchtime break. Would have eaten there as the food looked good, but once again, there were no options other than a full meal available. Staff were excellent as was service. Great selection of beers.

Can't comment on food but menu looked awesome. Drinks brilliant and good 0% range. As a Publican of a real ale venue the products were brilliant. The ascetic gave me so many ideas for my venue

The food was tasty but only half a sausage on a vegan sausage casserole tad over price £14 for half a sausage tad disappointed from staff when told 😡

Food was spectacular, we were the only people in on a Tuesday afternoon, staff were friendly and very accommodating.

Myself and my wife booked a couple of nights away in Hull and after a busy day shopping and sight seeing we wanted some food and came across this gem. From the moment we stepped inside this pub, we felt warm and welcome, the staff were so friendly and welcoming. The decor is next to none at this pub, rustic and classic! The drinks were very reasonably priced and the food… wow! My wife got the fish goujons and I got the Cajun chicken ciabatta, and it was the best chicken sandwich I’ve ever had! An amazing experience and we will defo be back, Thankyou to the staff at the lion and key for a lovely end to a great day.

Still a nice pub. Lovely staff too. Visited for the first time in a couple of years. My God, the food was nowhere near as good as it was. A testament to the micro wavers art!! Disappointed.

Went for a staff meal to The Lion and Key. Ordered a fish and chips with mushy peas. Was hands down the best fish and chips I have ever had. So fluffy and airy but same time crispy. Not at all greasy. Service was spot on. Had Freddy Mercury lookalike serve me my lunch.

Quirky pub, lovely little outdoor space

The decor is unbelievable,food and service very good and pleasant staff , which goes a long way now days.

Avoid this place overpriced food very small potion size plus false advertising we ordered a potion of bread it was advertised as bloomer bread priced at £1.95 in actul it was two slices from a standard sliced bread loaf we will not be returning this pub used to be amazing but afraid to say it has gone right down in our estimation

Really nice scran with a ever changing menu, service can be hit and miss but a decent selection of ales that change frequently with knowledgeable bar staff.

A Friday lunchtime visit. Very friendly and pleasant staff who were genuinely happy to help, large fish and chips were very nice too! Very much enjoyed it, nice pub and staff 👍

Excellent meal in a family friendly pub, would strongly recomend chippie special or the cottage pie. We have been a couple of times recently and recomend this olde world pub in the heart of the old town

Came here for food and a pint and the food was so lovely, everyone enjoyed it.

Food is good, the place always smells unpleasantly strongly of fish though (fish and chips are great mind you!). It's a lovely traditional pub on the inside, but personally, I've always thought that it doesn't have much of an atmosphere. I'm sure others would disagree. Finally, I was very disappointed, on my last visit, to find that a pub selling tomato juice and vodka, and that has a kitchen, doesn't do Bloody Mary's.

i have frequented this pub for lunch over the last few years ..but not any more..the fish and chips i was served was more for a child ..fish tail..patty..chips ..peas..fish no bigger than small patty....when i confronted the waitress she even said to me this week has had a lot of complaints about the small portion of fish..i have always had a full sized fish so obviously can compare..such a shame cost over £15.00..unacceptable really..

Very expensive for tiny portions. Paid £15.45 for a small fish with no chips. On a fair value assessment, very poor. The rice was pre-mixed in with curry too. £37 for 2 small meals.

Just here now. The sign advertised food all day, but went in at 5:00 to find out food is finished at 5:00. No draft cider for my husband and was served a pink gin and lemonade with flat tonic. The place is cozy, but service is lacking.

Always a favourite for lunch with friends. Service was quick and staff are very friendly and always greet you on arrival. The licensee's train their staff to a high standard to ensure excellent customer service.

Normally go to Minerva but they were fully booked so we thought we'd try Lion & Key. The girl serving on was lovely & friendly so we were pleased with our decision to try. Unfortunately we were so disappointed. My husband ordered a 'Meat Club Sandwich ' I can honestly say it was disgusting, it was full of salami and pepperoni slices with a very small piece of ham pressed together with tasteless purple lettuce (a meat club is normally chicken & bacon isnt it,) My husband ate the chips only and said they were OK and made a chip sandwich out of the dry bread which was allegedly toasted. I had the Soup although very tasty at £8.95 I found very expensive, it was virtually a child's bowl size and a very cheap slice of bread and butter with it not even a decent bread roll & I was still hungry afterwards. I'm sorry as the pub has the potential to be great like it use to be years ago.

Absolutely fabulous nothing like pub grub it's just like mother used to make it. Okay it's a bit pricey compared with others but it's the ambience of the place. It appeared to be pensioners paradise with the 20% off everything, but then again it's those who seem to keep most places going, especially during the day. The staff were delightful despite their youthfulness. Top marks see you again very soon and thank you very much

Good food is always served here, there's plenty of choice.

Unfortunately I arrived to eat with friends and they politely refused to serve me any food because they could not cook anything without cross contamination. So I had crisps lol. My friend forgot to check when booking our table so it's my fault for not checking myself but the atmosphere is good and the service and food looked good too

Awesome Pub, Highly Recommended.

Looked forward to our afternoon trip to The Lion and Key as I like a good pint of real ale what was on off was beer from a local brewery and not my cup of tea,my partner like a good lager but again nothing on offer., Not sure but possibly has had a change of ownership and trying to make a go of it by reducing quality I will probably not go back for a while wait till the get some decent ale in Pete Lincolnshire

Booked a table for lunch, we were not disappointed. The staff here are so friendly, you really do feel welcome. Opted for the Hull Chippy Special of fish, chips and a fish patty. Good atmosphere, nice decor, good food and efficient staff.

Was there on a night out with the lads after the live football match enjoyed the atmosphere and quality drinks , staff where very friendly 😁

First time in Hull. Picked this pub at random. Intended just to have a beer or two but then saw the menu and decided to eat as well. The very friendly young lady running the bar helped me make my choice and stone-me if it wasn't one or the best pub sandwiches I've ever had. Anywhere. Interesting range of local beers on tap and with the trip to take in the ceiling decor alone.....rarely so easy to give a pub 5-stars....👌

Decent location and while I didn't know the girls name I visited on the 26th of January 2024 and she wore white and black swirls and she was lovely and what you expect from a server. Engaging smiling. A credit to the lion and key

On a film-set street, 30 seconds from the hustle and bustle but seems 30 minutes away, lives a gem of an old school pub. This gem has some great beers but its main selling point is the food. The place was packed which was a good sign. We rang the bell on the wall (a nod to the old Irish pub days) and was served some delicious pub style fish and chips. Not been asked “skin on or off” for a long, long time but shows attention to detail. Enjoy!

We visited yesterday, as my son in law always loves the chance to go for the fish and chips here. Living in Germany, he doesn't get decent fish and chips often. My Haddock goujons were massive, and beautiful. All the food was excellent, and the service was top notch. Being of " advanced years " my wife and I got a discount on our bill, which was very welcome. The only slight niggle was the smaller than usual choice of beers, with no dark ones on draught. The ones we had were lovely though, so not a big problem.

Wish I'd read the most recent Review saying it was closed We planned visit only to find place was all shut up. Outside lights were on (at 1pm) but a 360 round place showed " no way in"

I eat there quite regularly as part of social events and the food is always excellent and good value in my opinion. I particularly like the fish and chips and their vegetarian options. Service is excellent and friendly, and the place has always been buzzing when I've been in.

Great home cooked quality food.

Must be looking at the wrong photos/reviews? Told not to preorder but when we arrived for a meal booked weeks in advance key items not available. The food that came was poorly presented, much smaller than photos or was just dry. My macaroni cheese looked nothing like photos and was baked dry. With this in mind, it's overpriced.

Fantastic pub, the atmosphere from the moment you walked in was great, the building and decoration just has to be seen. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was all freshly cooked and tasted great.

I'm never disappointed. The best beers and best food. Menu is small, which means the quality of the food is excellent.

Went for lunch. The food was excellent, I recommend the fish and chips. All the staff were friendly and the beer was lovely and a reasonable choice. There was an added bonus for us oldies in that we got 20% off the bill. Highly recommend.

Great pub, what else do you need?

Another of my occasional visits to Hull and another visit to the Lion & Key. And, as before, we were not surprised. Both dishes we had were delicious as were the ales, and the bill represented excellent value for this very high standard of food. I'll repeat my previous comment as it's still totally true: this is where I have had absolutely the BEST fish and chips meal ever, anywhere. Outstanding.

Excellent Old Town pub with a friendly and relaxing atmosphere at lunchtime. I’d forgotten how much I like this place. Great choice of beer & my all time favourite chicken curry half-n-half on the menu. I won’t leave it so long before my next visit.

Popped into Lion n Key on Sunday , feeling in a snack, grazing mood! Opted for club sandwich , wow..Full of Italian meats, salad, chillie jam( optiona) on toasted ciabatta bread...fresh, tasty, massive...I shared it with partner...PERFECT! Ordered from the bar, from a very pleasant, friendly, young woman...A credit to Lion n Key! to be fair ALL the staff on duty were very Wellcoming! And if you are pension age...you get 20per cent Off! Thank you all...for a great eating out experience. RESPECT!

Great place to chill and chat, with a fantastic choice of drinks

Loved the food, lots of it. Staff are friendly and we liked the ambience of the place. Decently priced menu, drinks as well. Interesting decor, not too modernised just felt good. Car park very close (£1 an hour). We were visiting Hull and liked the area the pub was in.

If you are looking for a lovely pub with great pub food and decent range of beers and lovely service then this is the place. I had the Hull Chippy which had half a haddock, and a fried potato thing and with mushy peas. So bad for the heart but so tasty. My wife had 'half and half' for the first time with her chilli con carne. Brilliant idea.
