Love this place! Staff are super friendly and extremely knowledgeable on their drinks menu. We only had time for one drink, both of which were amazing, but will definitely be back as we were at the bar and could see all the drinks going out and the staff chatted to us and answered our questions about the different drinks. Food also looked fab so we want to try that too! I think the thing that really makes this place is the staff - even though it was really busy they weren't flustered or stressed, they just seemed really chilled out and had plenty of time to chat and check you were OK. And seriously, the cocktails are incredible!

Attended the Sunday quiz which was only £2 to join, it was very entertaining with a great atmosphere and the food was great too! Will be returning here to do the quiz again and get some food!

Very bohemian bar in city centre... Cocktails and bottle beers are the offerings. Table service excellent. Mojito £9 plus free table water and good sounds from the speakers.

Our very first visit here and certainly won't be our last. I would say this is Hull version of Evil Eye in York. Staff are very friendly, very warm greeting. Fab atmosphere, it's great watching the staff make the cocktails. It's like theatre.

Stubbled across this gem on a cold Sunday evening. When we walked in to our surprise there was a jazz band playing . We both had amazing pizzas and a really nice bottle of red wine .

I just can't recommend this place enough. The food is so fresh and nothing is to much bother if you want something changing. The service is 10000% always greated with a smile, they're so happy to answer any questions about a drink and they are always happy to recommend a drink for you to your taste. The best place for drinks in hull!!

Fabulous cocktails, whether from the classic or seasonal selection. I can particularly recommend the Penicillin and the amaretto and cherry sour. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable and it’s the little touches like bringing you water and the attention to detail on the drinks like a personalised card with the birthday cake cocktail that elevate this to a higher level. Will definitely be back, loved it.

Great atmosphere & packed to the rafters on a Sat night. I wish I could sit and drink every cocktail on the menu, but had to be satisfied with an amazing vodka martini, a delicious tiramisu thing, and then something else that I can't quite remember... Fun was had 🍹

Situated in the heart of the pedestrian area of the city centre. Arranged over several floors this venue has a mix of seating with full table service. There is a great range of cocktails, all around £10. Trendy young waiting staff are friendly and helpful.

I really liked this when I first came with a group of friends, the food was great and the cocktails were fantastic, and the staff were great. However I went recently, and a member of staff who throughout the visit was quite friendly and welcoming, decided it was fine for people to vape behind me inside the bar, which honestly made me feel very unwelcome as an asthmatic and is also quite frankly illegal. So I don't feel like I will be able to return.

Visited on Saturday evening. Knowlegeable staff, free drinking water, lively ambiance. Liked the industrial seats. Coctails excellent. I am probably a bit old for this cool trendy place, but the younger set should enjoy it. I am a bit deaf, so found the background noise sometimes difficult to deal with, but I will visit again when next in Hull. Ask the staff what drinks they recommend (I did) and you might discover something new and highly enjoyable.

Great experience here. We was here for just over 5 hours. We were originally only going to have one or two drinks.. Fab decor, funky music amazing range of tasty cocktails. And the pizza was delicious as well. Really nice welcoming staff and unlimited free water. I would highly recommend and come again

When i entered this establishment i expected one thing in the name and they couldn’t deliver on that, no brains in jars what a shame

Yeah I've not been in town for a drink with friends for a while, picked a hot day, only ever been in brain jar once before. Arrived sat outside, whilst a chap, arrived to start filling glasses with water for us. That's a first for me, specially in Hull, but shows the place is looking at good customer service. They don't do draught beers, so if your wanting beers, it's bottles, which we had lager, and cider. Taking a look at the provided drinks menus, there are a all host of cocktails to endudge yourself, maybe next time for us. But I can get the vibe from this place, and why it's getting good reviews.

Came yesterday for My Best Friend's Birthday the Food was absolutely Delicious and the cocktails wow Best one I have had ever ,even though a little bit pricey for the cocktails but definitely worth it. we will definitely be returning.

Pizza Wednesdays are great! Much better than the chain Italian restaurants. Cocktails are super nice too (I had a virgin passion fruit mojito). I've been another nights out too and the staff are lovely. There's often live music in there and it's usually quite busy downstairs but plenty of room upstairs :) The cocktails hurt the wallet though :(

A Very quirky independent Bar in the lively Old Town. Specialising in cocktails and food. It's nice to see something a bit different. The staff were very pleasant and friendly. I only had a drink but the food did look and smell very nice. Really aimed at a young trendy crowd not for a crusty old real ale drinker. It also has some outside seating, although why anybody would pay a premium to sit in the street drinking is beyond me when you can sit in the shop doorway opposite with a cheap can of cider. Young people will love it.

Been here before but a long time ago. Went on Sunday 4th June and had one of the nicest pizzas I've ever had (and I've had a fair few). The cocktails were amazing, friendly staff and the music was kinda 90s britpop and indie.

We were in The Brain Jar mainly for the quiz but stayed there all afternoon. The quiz was great fun. The food is amazing. The main reason for going to The Brain Jar is the brilliant cocktail menu. Classic or modern, they are all there. The staff are awesome and the table service is superb. It's a great idea to have the option of water on the table all the time.

Without a doubt the best cocktails in town! A good vegan food offering to boot, too - win, win!

We really enjoyed our visit ot the Brain Jar.The pizza I had was superb-fresh herbs, real fresh tomatos and just right crisp base soft enough to eat. The staff couldn't do too much.They made my choir members very welcome and let us serenade them just before opening! A great vibe! People said they wouldn't have known to come in before but would definitely revisit. A good palce to take visitors with the mix of seating and space upstairs as well.

I really enjoy the Brain Jar, it is a quite quirky bar, they have an amazing selection of cocktails and often have seasonal specials which are well worth a try! The food is also very tasty, they predominantly do pizza but also have a good selection of sides as well. The staff are always very friendly and helpful as well.

Bardzo przyjemny lokal gdzie obsługa jest bardzo sympatyczna a napoje idealnie schłodzone. Na plus bardzo zaskoczyła mnie podana szklanka wody zaraz po wejściu, super pomysł.

Love the place but prices nearly doubled for a cocktail since last time I was here before lockdown. I know things have gone up but seemed a bit steep. Shame as cocktails and staff are wonderful. Have to mention the fabulous best man who turned away a young women as she was clearly drunk. Well done, many would have taken her money.

I write this with something of a heavy heart because this 'bar' was one of my favourites. Often we'd look through the window, see how the craic was and we'd go in. We'd stand at the bar and we'd drink and chat to anyone and everyone, barstaff and customers alike. But since covid everything has changed. Forced bookings and seating became the norm, but that ship has long since sailed. People are moving back to normality, except Brain Jar isn't. Now the downstairs bar area feels sterile as you're forced to take a table, likely upstairs away from anyone. The atmosphere is one of small intimate groups, with no give and go, no vibe that makes you want to stay beyond the one drink you feel compelled to oder from your table. The place just has no soul anymore and its bitterly disappointing as we'd had some amazing nights in there. One of the main reason for our visits was the wide choice of gins and tonics, but on that last visit when I asked for a Fever Tree Mediterranean I was brought Indian Tonic. I had two staff advise me that that is now the only tonic you provide? That alone gives me reason to never go back. Why on earth would you ruin such a good selling point by only providing the worst possible tonic? Coupled with the lack of atmosphere, it's such a shame, but I just don't see us ever returning. I get perhaps changing the business model to one of a bistro rather than a bar, but you need to be prepared to lose those customers who have the means but do not enjoy being shoehorned into a corner.

Always a good place to drop in to when in old town, a cosy, art (and illustration) oriented place, with genuinely friendly staff, and eclectic music that often makes me check out what I'm listening to. Great food and drink. Possibly the best pizza base in the city.

Visited The Brain Jar when we were is Hull for a gig. Every cocktail we had was amazing! 100% would recommend is you are in Hull.

Popped into The Brain Jar on Sunday for lunch, having come across it whilst walking around the Old Town. We ordered the Wario pizza (gravy sauce, cheese and rosemary) along with the Wacky Garlic Bread and pear and walnut salad. The food was delicious, pizza base was chewy and crispy, very impressed! Everything tasted really fresh and the flavours for each dish were well put together. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The drinks menu was expansive and I wished I'd taken the bus into Hull rather than the car as there were a lot of delicious sounding cocktails on the menu. This place is a class act, they clearly care about their food, drink and customers. I'll be back!

One of my favourite independent bars in the city. Staff are always friendly and seem genuinely happy when we’ve popped in. Rob even waves at me when I pass during the day, lovely gent. Beautiful cocktails, I’d recommend the jungle bird with one of the pizzas! Do not miss out on this gem of a venue.

Been here 4 times and will continue to visit. Service is spot on even during very busy periods water is served as you sit down and during your whole visit. This to me is great customer service . The cocktails made to order and boy...

Underwhelming pizza scant on topping. Spoken to like vermin by a very aggressive employee/owner. Granted we moved a table in an otherwise empty room so our large party could sit together but he was awful to us. Could have said the simple words "please don't move the table" rather than standing and loudly shouting at us. I won't waste time or money going back. Shame.
