Having just got home from a holiday in Italy we fancied a final evening out but our local was fully booked. The Lion was second choice as it is not walkable for us. Very buzzy atmosphere, good pub food and , best of all, the most excellent service, from a young woman who seemed to do everything front of house and still have time to chat, quite up to anything we had abroad.

We found ourselves in Clifton-upon-Teme by accident but visited the Lion Inn because we needed a stiff drink and maybe something to eat. The Inn is dog friendly and the young staff are friendly, capable and efficient. In the end we only ordered a bowl of chips but they were the best chips we had eaten in ages. A very good experience

This was rather an odd experience. As it was Saturday, we made a table reservation only to find that we were the only ones in the restaurant. A pleasant old building with very pleasant staff although the service was little slow. The food was generous Pub food although my wife's salmon was a little over cooked and almost dry. Nevertheless a pleasant lunch and worth a visit

Visited twice during our weeks holiday - definitely worth the 3 mile round trip walk. The Wye Valley “Butty Bach” beer and Robinson’s Cider were excellent. Tuesday was Pizza Night cooked in a proper pizza oven - perfect crispy base and plenty of topping choices which was streets ahead of any other well known pizza restaurants. Thursday was burger night - home made burger patties, fillings and fries were top quality. Steak was also good. The staff and other locals were very friendly and entertaining.

We booked for 1night bed and breakfast arriving at 6pm at 6.20 went to have look at the menu only to be told unknown to us that we needed to book a table and the only times available as before 7 or after 8.30 both unsuitable. We booked this place as it had a restaurant. There was no mention of needing to book on there website. We asked to speak to the manager who came over to see and leant with his arms on the back of a chair in a very arrogant and aggressive manner. After telling him our problem he made no attempt to apologise or explain to situation or to provide a solution only to say he can cancel our booking and return the deposit. We were looking for a quiet being meal and a few drinks to relax after a day's travelling. He then just walked away without a word. Fortunately we manage to find rooms in a hotel a few miles away who could not have been more helpful

Sister in-law had reserved 2 rooms for one night stay for myself and my husband on 3rd July 2019, received usual confirmation email informing checking in/out and serving meals times, etc. We arrived around 6.30 pm and spoke to a lady of the waiting staff to let her know we would be having an evening meal, she told us they didn't have any tables after 7pm as they were expecting a large crowd of 30 people at 7pm, we were told we could eat but we "had to order now, before 7pm" as we hadn't booked a table. Nothing in the confirmation email mentions anything about having to book a table!!! The Lion Inn is located in a rural location and not knowing the area it wasn't going to be easy to find a place nearby to go for a meal, we were unhappy and left very frustrated after hearing this, we had driven just over a hundred miles and all we wanted was a quiet place for the night and a decent meal. We were being rushed by the lady to make a fast decision there and then to order our food so under such pressure, we decided to go along with it and went to our rooms to leave our bags and rushed to the bar to order our meals. However, not happy with situation as couldn't shower and get changed before the meal as we had planned, we then asked to speak to the manager as we felt penalised, after all it wasn't our fault we hadn't booked a table, the email only stipulated: 'meals are served between 5pm and 9pm'. We thought the manager might be able to help out by allowing more time for us to get ready before the meal. A male manager came and we explained, unfortunately, his body language clearly showed us right from the start he was not interested at all, as soon as I started to explain, he crossed his arms and leaned on the back of one of the pub chairs, he kept looking at me with a very unpleasant expression of disdain on his face the whole time while I was explaining, he made us all feel very uncomfortable. When I went quiet waiting to hear his response, and still in his crouched posture, he answered: "Is that all, anything else? And what do you want me to do about it?" I replied, he should know what to do, he answered: "The only thing I can do for you is to refund you your £2 reservation fee and just go and find another place where to stay!" We couldn't believe what we were hearing, told him found his response, whole attitude and body language extremely rude for somebody in his position and that I most likely would write a review, he shrugged his shoulders and just walked away and left us without even saying one single word of an apology! This manager lacks all the skills required to perform his job appropriately with customers, he didn't like being told he had been inconceivable rude. We found his treatment incredibly disrespectful and totally unacceptable. WE WILL NEVER, EVER GO BACK! Needless to say, after being treated so badly we couldn't stay and we left, we were fortunate to find a lovely hotel 6 miles away, where all staff were very polite, they made us feel very welcome.

Popped in here after a walk from Cider Mill Cottage, a place we rented for the weekend. Very friendly staff and they all loved our young Lab puppy, so he was having a whale of a time. Dog bowl of water provided without being asked. Dogs are allowed in the pub side of the premises and I guess out back in the outdoor seating area. As it was blowing a gale we opted for the indoor location. The selection of wines and beers was good and I was more than happy with the Abbot Ale which was well looked after. The restaurant looked quite inviting and we heard a number of positive comments as people went up to pay their bills. Quite an olde worlde pub.

We called for a light lunch whilst out on a country drive. and as the pub wasn't busy, we had the lounge to ourselves. We chose the steak sandwich with chips, and when it came, we found that it was a lot more substantial than we had expected. A thick piece of steak, served on a large, hot, crusty bun, which had the addition of fried onions and mushrooms and was served with a delicious home made pepper sauce. This was accompanied by home mad chips and a dressed salad. Not quite the light lunch that we thought we wanted, but very enjoyable. This was washed down with well kept local beer and a local cider.

And if a customer can't make a simple comment , and I emphasise, NOT A COMPLAINT, then it's a sad business they are running. Good luck

We ate here on a Friday evening whilst staying in the area for the weekend. Quite a traditional looking pub inside with a small but cosy dining area. A great choice of dishes on the menu but better than your traditional pub grub. Lots of locally sourced options too. I had the Worcester Gold Cheese in batter with pickled damsons and salad to start, it was truly delicious. My husband had the Avocado, bacon and Shropshire blue salad which again was lovely. We both had the belly pork as a main and again we're not disappointed. In fact the only disappointment was the fact that we just didn't have room to try one of the delicious desserts, however it is a good excuse to return another time.

We came here Friday and Saturday evening - the welcome genuine - unfortunately, there was a problem with the chiller so several beers were not available. So I went for a bottle if red wine instead, a Shiraz from Oz, it was excellent. We had three courses both nights. The soups were really good, and the coq au vin was delicious and very filling. My mum had the fish and I had the real pie, again well cooked and wholesome. The chips are particularly good - cooked properly.

The chips with the steak were some of the best I've ever had! For dessert we both had pineapple fritters with was delicious and once again a very good portion. We booked a table for the Saturday before fathers day to show my mother in law just how good this place was. I have visited the Lion a few times now and my wife just loves the duo of pork. When we looked at the menu the duo of pork was not on there ! The waitress kindly asked the chef if he could still do it and I am pleased to say the answer was YES !The duo was indeed perfect and my mother in law could not remember the last time she had eaten such a lovely meal. This was the first time I had tried the 10oz rump steak. I had it well done and I could not believe how juicy and tender it was. I cannot imagine ever returning and not having the steak again. I just wish it was bigger !My thoughts towards the management are :1. Please, please, PLEASE don't loose the duo of pork. I am not a pork person my self but I did try some and it had made me think that I might have it one day.2. Please do a bigger rump for the greedy such as myself and my eldest son :)

The table was sticky, the table mats even more so, the service perfunctory and unfriendly. The noise from the "television-room" was unacceptable, the child running wild and uncontrolled even less so.One of my companions thoroughly enjoyed her fish with "vierge sauce" - my gammon was rather small though tasty, and the chips perfect, we were all overawed by the quantity of peas heaped everywhere. The price was low but still the food was dreadful value! The service, it has to be said was excellent. The inn has a "Les Routiers" sign up outside, I can only assume this is out of date and consequently misleading. .....although a little polishing in some areas would improve the offering. This review covers the restaurant at The Lion, I have reviewed the accommodation separately. It is an old building, whose attractive red brick facade was, I think, added to a much older building. The distinction between bars has, unusually, been maintained here. The Lion Bar has a pool (or snooker, I only popped my head round the door) table. The other bar is half open to the dining area, with a fireplace open on both sides providing a dividing line. There is good local beer on offer, for a warmer into the bank.We ran into the chef when bringing bags in from our car; he told us about some lamb obtained from the local butcher that day. We started sharing a baked camembert, before the lamb, which was quite excellent and a very large portion. The sauce was just a little too sweet for my wife's taste. I followed this with pudding. On checking the alcohol percentages of wine, it turned out that not everything on the wine list was available. We ended up with a very palatable bottle of Rioja. I think that cost £17.95; there were certainly bottles available for £12.95. This indicates that the prices are very reasonable, especially to those more familiar with London prices. The young (very young) lady looking after us was charming, but could do with a little more training, such as offering a wine list and water automatically. But to revert to the title of this review, the quality of the food and its very reasonable cost must earn a grading of Excellent.

The Lion is a nice looking pub in a rather charming little vilage. Pleasant atmosphere, if very quiet the night we went. But the food was disappointing: the manager/owner chap was rather inclined to tell us what we wanted, and the quality was not up to the price. We had 'duo of pork' and were promised succulent pork belly and melting tenderloin. What we got was two rather shrivelled spare ribs, and a dull and dry piece of tenderloin. Not redeemed by the vegetables either - minimal on the plate, and the extras we asked for were tasteless. And a 'chocolate fudge cake' that as far as I could taste was a rather ordinary chocolate sponge cake with icing. So it was very ordinary pub fare, but at superior pub prices. You're much better off down the road in Whitbourne or Knightwick.

I booked a table 6 weeks in advance for a family reunion as the pub was geographically convenient for all members of the party. We took a chance as there had been a recent change of ownership and the menu was new. The new owner emailed me the menu very efficiently and it was sufficiently interesting (if not inspiring) for me to go ahead with the booking. It appeared that he was making a real effort to make a positive impression. I rang up the day before the booking and was told that extra staff had been taken on to 'ensure things went smoothly'.As soon as we arrived we were shown to a table in a corner right next to the kitchen door and the coffee maker. The seating arrangement was rather cramped and the position of our table seemed more to the convenience of the staff than the customers given that there was plenty of room elsewhere in the dining area throughout the evening. Cutlery was brought to the table virtually piece by piece. The whole party decided to have a main course and a sweet. The main courses were reasonable quality. The sea bass was well cooked though the accompaniments were rather greasy and would have benefited from some fresh green vegetables. The lamb was fine - the linguini too much and the steak was reasonably tender. The dessert menu was disappointing - and three of the party ended up with ice-cream as nothing else appealed. The pub itself has real potential and is no doubt a pleasant place for a drink but the menu and the service could be improved especially as the prices were not exactly cheap.

I used to live in the village, and visit occasionally. We always eat at The Lion, for sentimental reasons. It's been through a lot of changes, and it's always good when new people are obviously trying hard to keep the country pub vibe. The lunch we had over Easter was good, without being something I'd travel for. The starters were really good: soup, fish goujons and a spectacular pate - enough in the latter for all four of us! Sadly the rest of the meal didn't quite match the high expectations. The mains were perfectly decent, nothing to complain about. My local lamb was very nice, but a pretty standard Sunday roast. The veg was fine, but not quite hot enough. We didn't have puds; although we weren't late in the day they had run out of quite a lot, and what was there was uninspiring. We were perfectly full, however! It's always great to have local real ale and the staff were friendly and helpful.I wish these publicans the very best of luck; they have a difficult balancing act to actually make money, as has been proved many times. I'll eat there again, and it's well worth a visit if you're in the area; but not yet worth going far out of your way.

Staying at a nearby farm my boyfriend and I decided to eat out and I'm glad we did! There's plenty of parking and we were greeted with a warm welcome from both the locals and the staff! The food was quick and the service was great! Very speedy, really attentive and we felt like nothing was too much :) polite, cosy and friendly! Lovely place to stop in for a drink and food! Would recommend highly!

I visited this restaurant after buying a groupon voucher. This is not far from where I live so thought I would give it a try.The voucher was for steak and a glass of wine .The bar was busy with locals, but we were seated quickly. We did not have to wait too long for the wine or steak so service was good. The steak was a little tough and chips and peas were frozen but nicely cooked with onion rings and grilled tomato so good portions.Good value with voucher will probably return to try something else on menu as the restaurant had a good atmosphere and staff were very pleasant.

We recently visited, for a meal, the Lion pub in the delightful village of Clifton on Teme. Despite booking the meal some days in advance, and the pub being half empty, we had to wait over half an our for our table and then a further 50 minutes until we were served. The food appeared to be frozen and re-heated. When we left the restaurant, we stepped outside straight into the group of smokers positioned on the pub's doorstep. Not a good experience!

My wife and I took advantage of an Amazon local voucher for a meal for two with a glass of wine.On entering the premises we were both reminded of how "Village Locals" used to be when we first starting dating 40 years ago, there were twenty or so "regulars" crowded around the small bar which had a good selection of beers with spirits still measured by pouring rather than by optic measure. We were given a pleasant welcome by the waiter from the small restaurant and made our selection from the 2 course special menu. I chose the Whitebait whilst my wife had Pate as starters followed by Rump Steak for me and Home made Chicken & Ham Pie for my wife. All our food was well presented and cooked to perfection, service was prompt and attentive, we were asked if we'd like a dessert but we'd already had more than our fill with the 2 courses. In summary a real treat and a taste of the past all in one.

Visited using an Amazon local voucher - 2 course meal and glass of wine. Great food nicely cooked. Very friendly staff. Busy evening. Seemed like lots of locals in bar area. Only strange thing was I wanted the veg crumble of specials menu (£8.95) but was told specials not included in voucher offer. No problem - I had the fish n chips (£9.95) work that out!!!

We visited this pub on a steak meal "voucher deal". The service from the Mgr and his Asst Mgr was really friendly and welcoming, as was the feel of the pub in general. Small snug with pool table, bar area and dining area. Two log burners so will be really toasty in winter!Steaks came with all the trimmings, and everything was cooked to perfection. Not sure if desserts were home made or not but still tasted good. Quite a small selection of food on offer, which is usually a good sign that it's all cooked from fresh. Various offers on food and drink throughout the week, including some take away. Will definitely visit again even though it's a bit out of our way !

Disappointed with food as the food was only warm and the service was slow but the choice and portion size was good. Couldn’t find the servers when we wanted to order a dessert so gave up as had to wait so long and just asked for the bill when they did appear
