The Lemon Tree in Ryedale

Walked past early afternoon and saw a lady eating a fish sat outside, this was on my mind all day. Decided I was having some of that for my tea. First time I had called in and was greeted by a lovely lady Ho took our order and continued with conversation. Fish, chips and curry absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend.

Staying locally in mid November, we phoned an order through. When we got there, it was all ready to collect. The Haddock was perfect, especially as there was no skin and the chips cooked in beef fat were amazing. Even the mushy peas were different to our home offering I'm told, as I do not indulge. A treat for us as southerners. Wouldn't hesitate to go back.

We had a very good meal in the restaurant. The restaurant is clean and welcoming, there are tables outside if you want to eat a takeaway there. We were served promptly by a pleasant waitress, and our food did not take long to arrive. We had the smaller portion of fish and chips, the fish was really good. I would recommend this place.

Call and collect is brilliant. Karen is very efficient sorting the orders. Great quality food, best chippy in the area.

Having travelled down from Scotland, we fancied a fish supper. Nearest place to where we were staying was Helmsley so we headed there. Unfortunately, both takeaways only served cod/hake & we prefer haddock. We phoned The Lemon Tree & a lovely lady confirmed they did. Freshly cooked for us, ( some scraps very kindly added). All I can say is delish. Succulent piece of fish, proper chippy chips. Probably the best I've ever eaten. Lovely staff, lovely food. Highly recommend.

Have been many times over the years. With my wife or on my own. When the latter I like to have fish bites ( or bits ). Haddock of course. Why would you have anything else. We called on spec last week, went for the special medium sit down haddock. With peas / beans and bread and butter and tea thrown in. Cooked to order, everything fresh, hot and served in nice reply pleasant surroundings. Owners are very attentive and always welcoming. We will be back.

Stayed in this village for a few days walked to the lemon tree to collect a fish and chip tea .On arrival saw we could eat inside which we decided to do.The staff and service were great and the food was amazing the fish and chips were lovely not greasy at all would definitely recommend this place.

Ordered our food she took the money then said will be 30 minutes wait when I asked a question the other server jumped in and snapped NO I have only been here twice and twice I have seen her appalling attitude towards customers, if it wasn’t for good food I would avoid her like the plague.. very rude woman.

I ordered take-away fish and chips for 5.00pm. I only had a couple of minutes to wait and the meal was very good. No fat/ oil in bottom of container and chips were nice and crisp. Batter was just right and fish fresh and tasty.

This is a first rate chippy with very tasty fish and excellent batter. The staff are very efficient. Well worth a visit.

The ordering by phone and timed collection process was very easy and the counter staff friendly. Nicely cooked cod in crispy batter was the highlight, but the chips were a bit of a let down... very soft and soggy which was a shame as the spuds were of good quality. The mushy peas were also quite good. Would I give them another chance? Yes.

While staying in kirbymoorside. We rang and ordered our evening meal . Very polite and helpful staff . Fish and chips out of this world very tasty and crispy batter. Good sized portions too .really reasonably priced .

Tasty and hot and only a couple of minutes after the allocated 5.57pm collection time. Potions are maybe a bit on the skimped side compared to what we are used to in out home town

Whenever we stay in Kirkbymoorside we have to have take out fish and chips from here. Fresh and tasty take away or eat in food . Staff very friendly . Missing our visits but will back as soon as travel restrictions are over.

The restaurant is nice and the service was efficient, the menu is confusing and our assistant was trying to be friendly but I found her bossy and intimidating. Visually the fish and chips were very uninspiring, thin smooth batter and small flakes the fish was nice if a little bland, chips slightly dry and cold mushy peas, the two pieces of bread each quickly went hard on the crust. I definitely would not return or recommend and we only travelled to try because of good recommendations maybe from idiots or maybe the staff have changed recently.

We visited the Lemon Tree after a very wet day of local sightseeing. Greeted by friendly staff and seated in a comfortable, clean dining room. Food is cooked to order but worth the minimal wait. Beautiful white fish and 'real' chips. Will definitely return.

Had fish and chips twice from this ‘chippy’ during a recent 7 days holiday in this area.Beautiful white fish and crispy batter. Had a mini fish on the first visit and found it so tasty I had a large fish second visit, can’t say better than that. Good choice too and didn’t have to wait very long either. Highly recommended.Only criticism is that it closes at 8pm.

While staying in local bed and breakfast decided to have an evening meal at the Lemon tree,very clean and comfortable dining room ,staff very helpful regarding portion size /menu, we both had the 6 oz haddock with chips mushy peas perfect for our appetite and beautifully cooked ,firm fresh white fish crisp light batter,beautiful chips and mushy peas good value ,thoroughly enjoyed them not a meal we often have but they were delicious.

The Lemon Tree was the venue for our first meal during a week in Kirkbymoorside. Friendly welcoming service, good selection including scampi and burgers, and huge fish. Chips were delicious. Good value.

We visited this establishment earlier today. We went to sit in the cafe, the young waitress came and took our order ...a Jumbo fish and chips with mushy peas and tea for one with hot water all seemed fine, as I am unable to digest a lot of food at one sitting due to a health issue, it was agreed I would have a little of my husbands. Then another waitress came barrelling out of the kitchen with our tea at which point she started shouting in a very aggressive manner towards us and in front of other customers that we were inconveniencing her for not ordering enough food because she still had to wash up the cutlery etc. At this point both my husband and I said we were leaving the establishment as we had never experienced such rude and ill mannered service before in our lives to which the waitress replied "good, I don't need your Kind in here" needless to say we will not be returning.

Excellent quality fish & chips. Succulent fish with crispy batter. Chips light and fluffy. Everything is cooked to order, so if it’s busy be patience, it’s worth the wait. Takeaways - order then nip to the pub or call ahead.

Whilst my wife and i were on holiday in Kirbymoorside for 2 weeks we had fish and chips twice, once plaice then cod next time, with it we had mushy peas as well.The fish was lovely and fresh with lovely chips.A previous review mentioned the staff were chatty, well we found the conversation with the staff very friendly, better to be chatty whilst the food is being cooked than tumbleweed blowing in the wind ! A good "chippy" in a lovely location.

The staff are friendly and very chatty, which can get on your nerves! But the food is generally very good and the owners are nice people. The food will be cooked to order so be prepared to wait.

We tried this out one lunchtime on our recent holiday after reading some good reviews and we were not disappointed. The fish was nicely done and very tasty, as were the chips, mushy peas and curry sauce. Will definitely come back the next time we visit Yorkshire.

I am a frequent customer at the Lemon Tree so I believe I'm well placed to offer my opinion of this fish and chip shop.

The lemon tree is were you get the best fish and chips ever. It’s a lovely place to take away or eat in . The service is great and the people that work are very friendly. I would recommend this place to anyone . The cod is always superb and the scampi is mouth watering. I’ve tried many other fish and chip restaurants but the lemon tree blows them out of the water 10 out of 10 for sure.

Don't believe the last two reviews, they don't know what they're talking about. We've been coming here 4 years and NEVER had an average meal, it's always been superb. Beautifully cooked haddock or cod (and scampi) the staff are really friendly, the prices are reasonable. Everything is cooked fresh to your order so there is a short wait, but never long. Last time we were in they were doing 40 fish and chips for the pony club and still we only waited about 5 minutes. I can't rate this place highly enough.

On route home from flamingo land kids were starving so stopped here for fish and chips the wait for food was long and definitely not worth it. Fish dry and tasteless batter soggy and chips hard wish we hadn’t bothered stopping

This is the best fish and chips We have ever had The service was exceptional with a special warm welcome and the addition of fresh flowers on the table We had the haddock in a lovely batter and the chips were cut from selected potatoes so nice to complete this treat it was served with mushy peas bread and butter and a big pot of Yorkshire tea So my recommendation is if in the are go there It als has a take away

Great fish and chips, pleasant staff. Who could ask for more. There is also a nice sit-in restaurant so avoids the drive home or washing up.

This is one of the nicest Fish and chip Cafes in the area and it's always amazed me that it's never over full. It's hard to appreciate how a traditional dish like this can be a truly exceptional experience by simply using the best ingredients, prepared with skill and presented with care............well worth a special journey.

We visited in the summer. We were staying in a nearby hotel and there was 7 of us hungry and looking for something to eat in the evening after not really fancying the hotels overpriced frozen chop menu. We walked in to a lovely place and even though they had already closed the restaurant we were welcomed with open arms and a big smile. The fish and chips here are delicious and the service is fantastic. Please put this on your to do list if you are in the area. What lovely people and food.

Nice chips, nicely cooked. Fish was tasty too. We had a medium cod and two medium chips. They shut at 8pm, earlier in the winter so remember, you don't want to miss out! There is a dining room but not sure what time it opens. Didn't matter as we were taking out.

Popped in here after a day's walking, you can eat in or take away and we ate in. The fish and chips came with peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea. The fish was absolutely delicious and the portion sizes were very good, even the small portion was a good size. This is obviously a popular shop as the queue was out of the door!

We are hooked on these fish and chips we can normally take or leave them, but get withdrawal symptoms if we don't have them once a week the Plaice is fantastic as is everything else the staff are so friendly, a credit of all who work there for making you welcome and cooking excellent food every time.

The staff are very friendly and will do their best to get to know you if you live in the area. The fish and chips are good and there is a good selection of different things that you can order before you collect.

We regularly visit the Lemon Tree Cafe to eat in, even though we live in town. It is perect after a hard day at work or when we have visitors. The choice and size of dishes is varied and suits all appetites. Quality is consistent and value for money just amazing. Everyone is made welcome and the cafe itself bright, immaculate ... we are always proud to take our visitors. Keep up the good work....you are a credit to the town!

Fresh fish cooked to order so we had to wait around 5 mins. Would rather this and have it fresh. We were on holiday and found it strange it closes at 8.30 as our local chippy is open late but we came back another night after reading the good reviews here.

Just passing through and needed some thing to eat, found the chip shop. Very clean and welcoming, The food was excellent the fish was some of the best I have tasted and the chips were good, hot and fresh. will call again

In my quest to find the perfect fish and chips in North Yorkshire I have today taken another step forward. I'd go further and say it was a leap. At last a fish and chip restaurant that can actually cook fish and chips perfectly. It does help that the fish and chips are cooked to order. I really didn't mind the wait, it gave me the chance to read the menu five times and thoroughly engage with 'The Lemon Tree Policy'. I was just a bit confused by the tiered pricing system. A cod and chips could be bought for £5.95, £6.95, £7.95, £8.95 and £11.95. I chose the £6.95 because I was told it was 8oz. I know this to be a reasonably sized fish, I certainly wouldn't like it any larger. I daren't ask about the large fish at £11.95; surely this would attract an audience. The various prices reflect the size of the fish and the addition of bread and butter, mushy peas and a pot of tea. I'd rather have had an ice cold 'Peroni' but this was not on offer.The fish and chips that arrived were of an excellent quality, light (and secret) batter, beautifully cooked flakes of white fish, and chips (plenty of them) crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, as celebrity chef John Torode (of Masterchef fame) says they should be. I didn't order a drink, which was a mistake. I kept thinking about that cold beer and I promised myself exactly that within half an hour of leaving Kirkbymoorside. This was achieved. So, thank you 'The Lemon Tree' - you really can cook fish and chips, and at a reasonable price. I hope some of the fish and chips restaurant owners in Whitby are reading this.

Good menu to choose from and every thing is hot and fresh.The place is very clean and the staff are helpful and friendly.There was also plenty of room to park not far from the shop.

Had a weeks stay in area and first night decided to have fish and chips after a long journey.We were not disappointed with the results.Tasty F & C served by very friendly staff who told us about local garden walk about the following day and where to go to obtain tickets.

Go to the Lemon Tree on a regular basis. The food is always fantastic. The service is second to none as all staff are always happy and friendly. The price is very reasonable too. Can't recommend enough.

Fancied fish & chips. Shall we drive 28 miles to Whitby or stay in Kirkbymoorside? Chose the latter, opted to eat in at Lemon tree, excellent food, excellent service, great value, heartily recommended

Popped in here one day near closing time but the service was friendly and quick. Good range of fish dishes but we had battered sausage and chips. it must be the lightest in the area - rather like a tempura... really good value for money and good, refreshing tea!

We popped in here after a day out rambling, wanting something quick. The cafe was packed, they were busy but it was an excellent choice--very friendly staff; fish and chips were very good, not greasy (like too many places are). Also had a chicken sandwich, which was pretty good too.

This is both a take-away and sit in café and we found the place to be spotless with our food cooked to order.As a result it was hot and tasted fresh.Later in the week we went to another chippy that was voted best of 2014 but this place was better!

Saw this fish and chip shop when strolling around and decided that we would make a visit later in the week whilst on holiday in nearby Wrelton. At our request we ordered lightly battered fish specials and it was very good - chips cooked to perfection. There were also puddings on offer but too full to indulge. Well worth a visit either sitting in the restaurant or takeaway.

We stumbled upon The Lemon Tree on the way home from a day out at Flamingo Land, and are so pleased we did. The fish and chips were delicious - some of the best we have ever had! Decent portions, reasonable prices and good choice of children's meals. The staff were very friendly, and helpful - even cleaning the outside table and fetching extra chairs so the group could eat together, despite the fact we arrived right on closing time. We will definitely be back next time we're in the area!

Having had the misfortune of being very disappointed in the poor quality of chippies we've visited lately, it was with great pleasure that our family chanced upon the delightful Lemon Tree in Kirkbymoorside. For about a week we got to enjoy their meaty, succulent fish, hot fresh chips and wonderful battered sausage. Everything we had there was delicious and the portion sizes were generous. The fish was always fresh, beautifully cooked, meaty and golden. We just loved it. The oil/blend they use in frying is so tasty, producing one of the very best tasting fish & chips meals I've ever had. The owner and staff are very pleasant and friendly and we loved our experiences there. If I lived in Kirkbymoorside, I'd eat at The Lemon Tree at least twice a week. Would highly recommend this great place to anyone.

Got the fish and chips for 3 of us and they were excellent.The fish was so fresh and "meaty".We ate it all.The lady gave us napkins to take with us.She recommended a local viewpoint on a previous visit where you can sit and eat your chips.If you ask she will tell you and the view is to die for.The price is good and we noticed an offer to eat in which we may do next time.

Visited on 1st November with daughter. I had the large offering and was not disappointed. Lovely large white haddock with nice crispy batter. Chips nice and non-greasy, all in all a great lunch that certainly left me full for the rest of the day. My daughter had a child's meal. This was of the same quality and to be honest in terms of size would have easily been suitable as a smaller portion for an adult. Definitely recommended.

Visited on 24 October for take away fish and chips but was disappointed.The chips were tough and obviously not fresh, the fish was fresh and tasty, but the batter was a bit soggy and greasy.

I go here every so often as it's my local. Its definitely the best fish and chips I have had in the whole of North Yorkshire.

Had a sit down meal here a few years ago was great. Went back for takeaway fish and chips. Staff pleasant but food average. Soft batter on fish and a bit greasy. Chips were ok. Good value though.

Best fish and chips we have had for a long time. Cod was chunky covered in a light batter. Wish it was our local chippy.

We were in Nunnington, West Yorkshire attending a concert which began at 7 pm We drove all over the surrounding areas to find a place we could eat to no avail as most places did not open until 7 pm We were ravenous as we hadn't eaten all day. One of the pubs that weren't open recommended Kirkbymoorside as an area which would have places open. By the time we got there, we had very little time to eat and get to the gig.We passed a little gem of a takeaway called the Lemon Tree run by the lovely Karen. We were fortunate as they had a very cute restaurant attached to it to sit down. Karen made it feel like home and made us feel like family by putting us at a cozy table by the fire and taking our orders immediately knowing we were in a hurry. I am a vegetarian and she did stipulate that they didn't cook in veggie oil but I was ok with that. We had the most delicious home cooked fish and chips for my husband and the most scrumptious veggie burger, salad, and chips for me. If you ask if I would go again, I would reply...yes, immediately. They didn't even know of Tripadvisor restaurant reviews so I offered to write them up so people can experience the same kindness and lovely grub as we did.
