The Larder House is simply my favourite restaurant around, every time I come there is something interesting and unique to try, with the added benefit of a real focus on local produce. Service is super too, and the Library upstairs is the cherry on the cake!

I’ve been coming to Larder House for all of my special occasions since moving to Southbourne. It’s a really intimate cosy spot, perfect for anniversaries / valentine’s day. The food is always unique & tasty. I love the quality of the produce used & that it all comes from super local farms! The service here is also fantastic, the staff are really friendly and knowledgeable. (The ramos gin fizz from The Library upstairs is also my all time favourite cocktail)

Booking was a private hire event which was supposed to be in 'The Courtyard' but was later moved to 'The Library'. Full detailed review is on Trip advisor. Biggest issues were they tried to cancel our booking a week before the event as we wouldnt agree to spending extortionate amounts of money on food (around £1000 depending on what we wanted) but this was overcome by moving the event to 'The Library'. Then on the night, they waived the minimum spend due to supposedly not being able to do the cash bar that had been agreed but later in the night tried to tell us that we hadn't hit it and proceeded to increase the cost of the drinks to try and get us to spend more money. (It is unlikely we didn't hit the minimum spend as the drink selection was so poor at the bar we were supposed to be using, most the guests were going to the public bars to get drinks).

I attended a 60th Birthday booked in the upstairs room of this venue to start at 6pm, £300 to hire, no music, and a minimum drink spend of £1,200. It looked very nice. On arrival a cocky bouncer would not allow anyone upstairs at 6:15pm for no apparent reason while grinning at us and being very condescending. When we got upstairs the room was lovely, but the bar was limited, no beers, and when the barman was asked for a beer he said 'does it look like I sell beer', and we had to go downstairs to buy it at an inflated price, which was then not added to the 'minimum spend', only the upstairs bar was added. The 'food' was what I would call leftovers, a bizarre mix of meats and cheese with no crackers. We were also told by the bar staff that only pints, large wines, and double spirits were allowed, for your information this is illegal. There is a 'small measures' mandatory condition on your license and these must be offered, half pints, 125ml, 175ml wines, and 25ml spirits, check your alcohol license I doubt that you have an exemption. The feeling on the night was that they did not want us there, my advice is don't charge for something if you cant deliver, a 60th Birthday is an important event, and some people had travelled hundreds of miles to be there.

Attended a birthday party on the first floor. Nice room with a small bar and an outside terrace. The staff downstairs on the gound floor were polite, attentive and helpful. However, the staff on the first floor were rude and very unhelpful. The party food was limited and weird. The drinks were very expensive (e.g. £10 for a 125ml glass of house plonk) and their was no draft beer or juice for children. When we went downstairs to purchase draft beer and juice, the upstairs staff tried to prevent us from doing so. The upstairs bar also told us that spirits could only be served as a double measure (which is against the law). Never again.

We are a local family who have been here for Sunday lunch previously (about 4 years ago) and for dinners, but there must've been a change in chef or management, as the quality has taken a nose dive. A group of 7 of us came here for my mother's 70th birthday lunch and left feeling ripped off. For £24 upwards per roast you expect a filling, good quality dinner. The portions were inadequate, the gravy was gloopy (like a Bisto), the food lukewarm, and half the vegetables burnt. Those of us who had beef found much of it to be fat and gristle. They bring a plate of vegetables to share between the table which, once portioned out, provide three TINY roast potatoes per person and we all left hungry. And you have to pay extra for a Yorkshire pudding which, for the price, should be included. We like to support local businesses hence visiting Larder House many times before. Sadly it feels as though they are relying on their (outdated) reputation, have become rather arrogant and no longer care about their customers' experience. Unlike somewhere else local, such as Dickies, who clearly respect their customers and provide a consistent service. I'd recommend Brewhouse for a better roast dinner for around £10 cheaper pp.

What a venue! I loved the relaxed European vibe right in the heart of the high street. The staff were so inviting and friendly, as we enjoyed exploring the fantastic wine list and great atmosphere. We had the Sunday roast after recommendations that its the best on the south-coast and it did not disappoint. The aged beef was perfectly cooked and plenty of well priced side dishes to choose from you will not leave hungry. 10/10 would recommend to a friend

More of a Lada than a Benz. There is nothing better than a traditional Sunday roast in a friendly pub, except cooking it for yourself as it's so subjective. But we were meeting friends and that's the most important part. Usual hiccup, excuse me, about the garlic allergy but sorted out soon enough. The beef plates and one fish were good. Large portions, but our stomachs rose to the challenge. French mustard was not available, oddly, but English sufficed and Waterloo was proved to be not in vain. The peculiar wine menu caused an unintentional order of white rather than red. The explanation of "the black dots on the menu are red" is the best line I have ever heard in a restaurant. To their great credit, however, they readily replaced my glass AND offered me a taster of 2 reds. Well done! My friend decided to stick with the white as alcohol content and glug speed are paramount (I'm kidding). Our server, the enigmaticlly named Rio, was absolutely charming, friendly and delightful. The second lap was yellow-flagged. Mushy, lukewarm crumble and served with ice cream and not creme fraiche as my friend requested. The big downside was the table. Right by a hatch into the kitchen and consequently noisy and smelly. Our clothes provided us with a malodourous souvenir into the next day. In summary, probably skip this pit stop.

So we booked this restaurant on recommendation whilst visiting Bournemouth and we are SO happy that we did! We wouldn’t say it’s like having a dinner, it’s more of an experience. A very relaxed and slow experience, don’t rush it. The team there are very attentive and can explain everything on the menu (including the wine list) to a T! They only serve produce from local / independent farms and they seem to know all of the fish mongers by name. The tapas style dining is perfect to try bits of everything, but from experience don’t be afraid to go big! We wish we had tried a bigger main course but to be honest the flavours and the variety of everything that we had was just perfect. Ask the staff for their recommendations! They got it right every time. Lastly the ‘small plates’ concept didn’t mean the plates were small at all! (Not like East London, over priced and underfed) everything was hearty and a great portion size. Thank you so much! We will be back down again soon ☺️.

Good food and great service! The bacon belly, which apparently was made of beef belly, was to die for! However, the starters were ok. Cheese was regular, but the wine soaked grapes were strong (we loved it). Risotto was a bit dry and uncooked inside. Also, staff need to do more research or training on wine pairing. 😛

Came here for a roast and a couple drinks as the reviews were great and I couldn’t have been more disappointed. £25 for a roast beef Sunday lunch so expecting a nice meal but boy was I wrong. The meal contained 3x roasties, water thin gravy and fatty, undercooked and disgusting strands of beef. I paid the £1 extra for a Yorkie. The roasties were lovely but the rest I wouldn't give to my dogs. The server was great. Ordered a Negroni for a beverage and it was poorly made and mixed, cocktail knowledge/ability lacking at this venue. Won’t be coming back.

Our visit to The Larderhouse for a Sunday roast was a great experience from start to finish. The food was exceptional. We tried the pork, lamb and chicken, and all three dishes were cooked to perfection, with rich flavors and high-quality meat shining through. While the meal might cost a little more than at some other places, it’s clear that the quality of the food more than makes up for it. You definitely get your money’s worth here, and I would highly recommend The Larderhouse for anyone looking for a top-tier Sunday roast. The staff were friendly and attentive, especially Poppy, who went above and beyond to ensure that everything was perfect for us. Despite being advertised as vegetarian friendly, there was no option for Veggie Sunday roast or even flexibility to accommodate this. We were offered Tapas instead.. we took the option even though we had both been looking forward to a Sunday Roast. Unfortunately we had the "cheeseboard selection" which was 4 very thin slices of cheese.. good cheese but ridiculous at £20 .. we had a couple of other tapas.. halloumi dish and cauliflower cheese.. 1 lime & soda & 1 lemonade.. totalling a whopping £65. The music was so loud we couldn't hear each other to talk .. when asked if we could turn it down it barely registered any difference. We love to support local but on this occasion we found the larder house to be pretentious & over priced sadly. Won't be returning.

Popped in for Sunday lunch and had the ‘rump’ of Aberdeen Angus Beef @ £25, sadly disappointed as nothing rump about it and actually 3 pieces of very thinly sliced beef being very fatty. Apart from the lovely waitress the front of house lady could maybe have a softer personality and not make you feel like she was doing you a favour by finding us a table… there were plenty of empty tables available. No one checked up to make sure that the meal was ok. The flat bread for starters was delicious and would recommend this, but as for the beef roast really not worth the money for the quantity of food received. The 15% service charge and £1 for action against hunger was added to the bill but I’m not sure the service charge was justified. I would go back but not for the roast.

Went to the Larder House last night. Was blown away by the quality of the food, the cooking techniques and the entire concept of the menu - European inspired dishes with flame grilled fresh fish and meat, served in a “tapas” style - genius! Every ingredient had been sourced to perfection, with everyone from the cooking to the waiting staff passionate about each dish. The result was that the ingredients themselves were the stars of the dishes! The servers could not be faulted and the kitchen staff displayed an obvious passion for their dishes. It is not the cheapest restaurant to visit, but certainly one that will blow you away and leave you wanting more. Definitely work a trip for a special occasion! I would not be surprised if they are on their way to being awarded a Michelin star sometime very soon. Very good indeed!!!

I was so looking forward to my cheese board, we had two at £20 a head, no explanation of the very dry looking cheese, I just looked at it and sent it back and not once after sending most of my food back did anyone ask if ‘everything was ok’ I was so looking forward to this very rare night out and it was a complete let down!

She grudgingly agreed to give us a table and promptly allocated the table right at the entrance near the door. There were also lots of rowdy people drinking outside and at the bar and the music was so loud I could,nt hear what my husband was saying. Spent a fabulous catch up evening with a girlfriend last night. The roast beef was sublime, margaritas were sensational and it was the most relaxed bit of being spoiled possible!

Had dinner here a few nights ago and all the food was very good. We had a selection of 6 dishes and we enjoyed them all. The peasant was really good, the pork belly tasty and hispi cabbage amazing. The service was good, friendly and very informative. The place is very nice, food decor and a real cosy feel. Had a great experience but it is an expensive meal.

I’ve eaten at Larder House many times before and the food has always been phenomenal and worth every penny. However I recently went for my birthday to find out they are now tapas only. Which isn’t a problem but the menu wasn’t very clear and neither was the wine menu. The girl working didn’t have much idea to any of the menu when we asked her questions on the food. When our food came out we were super disappointed. Nothing tasted out standing. Was all very simple and pretty tasteless to be honest. All of us find this & we’re all extremely disappointed. Me more so as it was for my birthday and I had said how amazing the food was but it was nothing of the sort. When we said we weren’t happy with the taste of some of the bits we had ordered. (We left half of what we had ordered). The chef came out to tell we were wrong and implied we had bad taste buds. There was never once a sorry that you are upset with how the food was it was very much we are right and you’re wrong and the comment about having not experienced good food was the final straw. I will not be coming back here again after that experience. Waste of money. Plenty of other better quality restaurants in Southbourne and with a lot less attitude.

Popped in here for a last minute lunch with my husband. Such a nice experience, great service, delicious food and an interesting menu of small plates. Just perfect for a cosy lunch on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Thanks Larderhouse team!

We visited for Sunday lunch. This was after visiting for a local meeting Eco Sobo & loving the plant based nibbles we were kindly provided. The lentil & mushroom wellington was absolutely delicious - could not fault this. Fabulous. However the whole meal was swamped in gravy so potatoes & some of the delicious vegetables were soft & mushy. Would advise always serving the gravy on the side so it doesn't spoil a well thought out well cooked meal. The decaf coffee to follow was sadly not delicious - absolutely awful! Couldn't drink it. When I asked for sugar I was given fine white sugar instead of a choice of table sugars including natural sugar. I was surprised there wasn't any Pinot Noir on offer. The wine I was offered instead was quite heavy in comparison to a Pinot, and the first bottle was definitely off (so they opened a new one which was better.) It still wasn't a good wine tho. I've been advised by a friend to try the Friday night small plates experience round the bar.

Premium price for a sub par experience. The food (for the most part) was very delicious but it was very expensive for what it was. The menu is chaotic and wasn't clear what the differences are in terms of the size of each dish. For one dish we ordered a whole fish and when we opened it, the middle was very cold and raw so I assume it had been frozen. Similarly when I ate a prawn it also wasn't cooked as well, I'm guessing could be frozen too. The Staff are very friendly, no complaints there, but they did lack experience. Sometimes it was hard to hear them and didn't handle returning the raw food too well. The venue itself was also cold and we were seated next to a door which kept opening every time a member of staff came in instantly shocking us with cold air. Even the tables aren't suitable for a relaxed eating experience as they are garden tables that are too tall (I'm 6'1) and bumpy. I've been to other taspas restaurants which were more organised and structured. I hope they can learn from the recent bad reviews and address the issues.

Our meal had so many ingredients piled on top of each other that it was impossible to enjoy. I would have liked to ask for a second plate to spread the meal out. The vegetables were over cooked, charred to be inedible. Properly presented this would have been a much better experience.

I recently visited this pub and was thoroughly impressed! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to relax with friends. Lizzy, who served us, went above and beyond to ensure we had a great time. She was attentive, friendly, and even treated my friend's dog with a little snack—such a thoughtful touch. The food was exceptional. I had the Mac and cheese, which was absolutely delicious with a perfectly cheesy top. My friend ordered the BBQ burnt ends Texan burger, which looked incredibly juicy and was a hit. The drinks were also reasonably priced, making it even better value for money. I highly recommend this pub for its great service, food, and atmosphere. Will definitely be back!
