The Lamb and Flag Welney in King's Lynn and West Norfolk

Food presentation is abysmal; every course is served in bowls. Starter Fenland Chicken served in small desert bowl, on top of a very small salad (a garnish), not at all easy to manage to cut etc really needed to be on a small plate, I just gave up trying and my husband managed to eat most of mine as well as his. The mains then arrived in bowls too...Mine had sloppy mashed potato, topped with a small lamb shank then covered with red cabbage, not an appetising sight. I scrapped the cabbage to one side and removed the bone which I had to put on a napkin as there was no space for it, and once again cutting was very awkward at an angle and I had to move the meat off the potato, not an enjoyable meal... My husband’s meal of Porchetta (Stuffed Belly Pork) also arrived in a bowl stacked on one half of sloppy mashed potato and the other half red cabbage which looked very messy and not at all appetising. The pork was tough and hard to cut made even worse by being served in a bowl, and was very bland tasting. We ordered desert, a couple of scoops of ice cream for my husband which my husband said was the best part of the meal as it came as expected and had not been messed about with. I ordered Treacle Sponge with ice cream which arrived in a deep sided soup bowl (about 5 inches deep) with the ice cream on top of hot sponge, Although the angle of maneuver was awkward I had to agree with my husband that the sponge was the best part of my meal too.

Called in when in the area hoping they could fit our family in for Sunday Lunch having not booked. So pleased they squeezed us in. Food was fantastic, 3 of us had the turkey and one the nut roast. Portions were generous, lots of vegetables, piping hot, really tasty. Service was excellent lovely staff, can't recommend enough. Thank you for a lovely lunch.

Excellent Sunday lunch, we had beef, pork and lamb which were all cooked to perfection. Good selection of vegetables and a boat of full flavour gravy. Desserts of treacle pudding and custard that was traditional and scrumptious. All in all this is an excellent venue for a good well presented meal out. Looking forward to a return visit soon.

This used to be THE place for Sunday Lunch , in fact we never go anywhere else , was bitterly disappointed today . Firstly the generous slices of roast beef were replaced with meat so thin you could see through it . The abundance of vegetables were replaced with 2 small portions between 6 of us , with barely enough to go round and the gravy , well it was so watery and tasteless it completely ruined whatever taste the meat may have had . I told our waitress my thoughts who said oh yes I will tell the chef . A bit late when the hot water posing as gravy had already diluted any taste . Coupled together with £7.95 for a dessert this will no longer be our “ go to” for Sunday lunch . There are better pubs doing far better roasts . Such a shame

Sunday roast for 4 people . We sat in garden with our 3 dogs. Great choice of beef , lamb , pork and turkey. Vegetables very good too . Staff are really pleasant and friendly . Service was very efficient . Most enjoyable .

Travelled 22 miles round trip on recommendation this evening to visit the Lamb and Flag. First impressions, not a particularly warm welcome, the locals at the bar seemed hard pressed to pull their chairs in to let people pass into the restaurant! However the pub is nice, clean and we were given a lovely table for 2. Quick service from the waiter who took our drinks order and shortly after came back and asked what we would like to eat. I ordered olives and my partner ordered the prawn cocktail for starters and both lamb shank for mains. So disappointed, as the almost £6 olives were clearly from a cheap jar as they were small and tasteless, no dressing. There was no chance of buttering the focaccia this side of Christmas, the chunks of butter were so hard. I complained straight away and I presume it was the landlady who came to ask about the problem. Sorry to say, as polite as I was in my genuine comments, I felt I was met with a Fawlty-Towers- Basil like response! No real concern, just an offer to warm up the butter! Prawn cocktail at over £8 was, according to my partner ‘ok’ but the sauce was a bit watery and prawns were very small. The saving grace was the lamb shank main which was delicious. Quality touches were missing, such as the cheap mint sauce we were given and we noticed sachets of the cheapest sauces for fish and chips a nearby table. Sad to say as much as we were looking forward to our visit, it fell well below our expectations and we won’t be back. To summarise, average pub food at restaurant prices.

Lovely home cooked food. Service was good. Fairly small dinning area so advisable to book. We enjoyed it very much, especially the leek mash potato! would defiantly return,

So often you have friends that Rave about a particular this or that. Only for you to be let down or disappointed. WELL. The lamb and Flag came highly recommended by friends and new neighbours when we moved into the are almost a year ago. And let me say… we LOVE THE PLACE. The establishment itself is charming. Classic British elegant pub. Lots of hunting and fishing trophy’s etc. A warm fire awaits you in the winter. But The HOSPITALITY. By ALL STAFF is what sets this place apart The staff are Smashing. The owner is in residence numerous years and runs the place as a haven of warmth. Laughter. GREAT FOOD. Is served by delightful staff. Susie and Nana’s favourite KAT. Are just the most welcoming people. No matter what the weather. The welcome at the Lamb and Flag is inviting. We have become regulars. Sharing our special family occasions to casual drop in evenings. In a time where pubs are regularly closing. This place is here to stay. They have perfected gourmet pub food/ delicious specials. A fun pub garden. But it’s the people. The chefs. Front of house. We Thank you for making us feel like family. My Mum known as Nana. Is more often than not greeted at the door as I go park. She is 90 and escorted in and out to wherever we’re seated. With banter and warmth. Kat see’s our names in the reservation diary and actually looks out for Nana. Seriously. That is Priceless.

Beautiful little lunch spot. Service was very friendly and the food was gorgeous. We sat outside (we did have the option of sitting inside) the tables are spaced nicely so you get a bit of privacy.

Went with the family and 2 dogs. Last minute booking but they managed to fit us in. Great traditional pub with good selection of ales including non alcoholic beers. Superb choice of food on menu , difficult to choose. Service was friendly, the quality of food was fantastic. Not cheap, but you can tell the high standards of home cooking, and quality ingredients. Would recommend.

Another lovely lunchtime meet-up with friends, about half- way between where we live in Norfolk and Notts. A cosy, traditional pub-restaurant serving local ales and generous portions of homemade food, great flavours, un-pretentious but imaginitive cooking. Always a warm welcome for us and our dogs. A relaxing garden and close to the Washes and WWT bird watching centre. Service is relaxed, welcoming, and attentive. Booking recommended.... it can be busy! Thanks to all the staff and we look forward to our next visit.

This was our first visit to The Lamb and Flag and we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the service was excellent. Although the menu is not massive there were some extras on the specials board. There were only a few vegetarian options however I chose the beetroot wellington and it was delicious. The pub itself is cosy and comfortable and had an open fire which was much appreciated on a cold February night. Overall we were more than satisfied with our meal, service and surroundings.

Had a really lovely meal with family, good portion sizes, really good quality food, such a lovely atmosphere to. Staff were so lovely, very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you.. Looking forward to our return already.

We met with two friends for a chat and catch-up whilst having lunch last Sunday.We were pleased to see that there were still restrictions in place and felt very comfortable being there.The staff were friendly and helpful and the lunch was a very satisfactory portion size and of great quality.Will definitely be having a revisit in the near future.

We decided to book a table here for a nice dinner out whilst staying at Head Fen Country Retreat for our last night it was only about a ten minute drive from where we were staying. The staff are lovely and we decided to eat outside as it was very warm evening, the garden is tidy and seating areas clean.There was plenty to choose from on the menu and the portions did not disappoint the food was delicious I had the fish and chips and my partner had the beef lasagna definitely was filling I even tried to make room for the deserts which was nice too great choices of cakes and different flavoured ice cream not just your standard ones. We will definitely be booking here again on our visit

this is the best public house i have been to more than once the land lady is the best as is the staff and food im in top 2% on trip advisor so know what i am talking about i live about 1 mile away give it a try its so good i used to be alan and sally from portsmouth now im alan and sally from welney its so nice here

Went here with my Mother on a Sat eve. First time out for months with C19 lockdown. All had starters, portions are pretty big. Starters which came pretty quickly were whitebait wife & me, Mum had breaded brie. Mains we had steak & ale pie, Mum had Gammon steak & I had pork & chorizo burger this served skinny, no bun & a salad rather than chips. All were very tasty. The pie was fantastic & although not part of my diet was very tempting. We all had Puds which were nice as well. In all a nice meal, sensible bill, friendly staff & nice location what more can you want!

My husband and I both had roast pork Sunday lunch. It is the best Sunday lunch we had. Much better than places that costs 2-3 times more. The cracklings are just right, not to chewy. The meat is high quality. All the vegetables and Yorkshire puddings are home made and delicious. Overall highly recommended. It is a shame we do not live near the place and can’t visit it often.

We visited here for dinner when staying in the local area. It was recommended by the place we was staying at and it did not disappoint. We visited late afternoon on a Saturday and it was pretty quiet at the time. The staff were really welcoming and friendly. The food was definitely the best part about it, ordering a lamb shank and steak pie, they were both absolutely delicious, proper English pub food. Reasonably priced too. The pub was also great being COVID safe and advised to wear masks and keep distance which was great to see. Overall I fantastic experience and would highly recommend

All the staff were so friendly and welcoming at the Lamb & Flag that you felt at ease as soon as you entered the place. They were following all the necessary C-19 guidance they are obliged to at present, so it felt comfortable enough in that respect to, whilst still having enough rustic charm. They served a great selection of food/drinks and everything we had to eat was really delicious, although bring a large appetite as the portions are large, they certainly don’t leave you going home hungry.

This local pub/restaurant is really lovely.We were recommended by locals and so glad we booked.We had dinner for 4 , it was really charming and clean inside,really spacious and all the covid guidelines were being followed to the letter.The staff were all very friendly and personal and the food was just delicious.Lots of choice,great value and very large portions.I would definitely recommend a visit here if you are in the area.

Nice drive upto Norfolk for the roast dinner ,was really nice and the portions are a good size plenty of beef well cooked to . Bonus as there was a band playing in the garden will defo be back.

i live in portsmouth but came to welney on holiday about 16 weeks ago but i was so surprised of the lamb and flag food and landlord i have since moved up to welney it is the best pub ive ever been too and the landlord is the best ive ever met as he has not been open we have had takeaway so good but he opens on the saturday the 25 th i used to be alan and sally from portsmouth now im alan and sally from welney im in top 2 percent on tripadvisor so know what im saying is true thanks alan

This was one of several visits we have made to the Lamb and Flag for lunch we have never been disappointed with the food this time we had the pork hock which was very well cooked. The selection of beers is very good.

Lovely burger with nice bacon,good strong cheese,good portion of crispy chips and nice to see stokes ketchup. But oh.... why bother with the tiny portion of awful coleslaw,not needed

Sunday's were made for roast dinners and these are special. Great food, service and atmostphere. Open fire on a cold day, is a bonus as well.

we went to bedford bank and met chris manager of the mobiles there and went to the lamb and flag paul the landlord is the best landlord i have ever met the food in this pub is the very best i have ever had you may need a forklift to bring you out as the food is very very big but so good as is everything you have here im movung up from portsmouth just for the food not a joke be up end of may as im in top 2% on trip advisor trust me alan sally from portsmouth

First time I have visited this pub, heard good reports.Table booked for 1.30pm seated on time. Service was excellent, prompt but really friendly. Choice of roast meats was really good and vege and vegan alternatives as well. Portion size is large, good choice of vegetables, no-one left the table hungry, no room for desserts. Will certainly return.

Stopped off here on the way back from a weekend away on the coast and so glad we did. Pub is really homely and nice. Service was excellent and very friendly. The food was even better. All 6 of us were impressed with our meals and would recommend dining here to anyone.

After being recommended this place by a work colleague we decided to try them out for some lunch. Had the Steak pie and a Chicken dish. Both meals were outstanding and really tasty. Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend.

A wonderful unpretentious country pub with fine food and a choice of three cask ales. The landlord and staff were friendly and jovial, the pub was clean and warm and there was a great choice on the menu.

Booked late on a Friday Night to visit early on the Saturday Evening whilst in the area visiting friends who live nearby, picked this venue after reviews on Trip Advisor. Great traditional country pub, real fire, great food and welcoming feel. All our meals were great value (pie, gammon, scampi and the 16oz pork chop) Unfortunately didn’t have room for puds but hopefully try when we visit again. Our friends who live nearby will definitely return. Great local pub. wish we lived closer.

We came here Saturday just gone, we were greeted by lovely friendly staff member, I didn’t catch her name. I couldn’t fault anything, the turkey and leek pie I had was incredible - it has to be the best pie I have ever had! The rest of my friends were equally pleased with their food!

Superb food, drink and humour... Lovely typically English pub. Wood panelling, prized fish from the local waterways, country pictures and a fire as appropriate. Great atmosphere aided by Paul and the locals. Sharp wit is prevalent. Perfectly served gin. Broad menu always with superb fish. Food is of excellent quality, whether fish, steak, other meats and a range of other dishes including the usual currey. Efficient and friendly service with all requests well met. Easy parking. Highly recommended. The best pub food in the area.

Dropped in for a drink and found ourselves having a meal as well. We have been visiting The Lamb and Flag on & off since the mid 1980's, whey before TripAdvisor was even considered. The atmosphere and ambience is great, the decor purely local and attributed to the Fens, you wouldn't expect anything else! There are two dinning rooms, with plenty of choice on the menu. Tonight I had the Gammon, washed down with a pint of Elgoods ale, absolutely excellent. The staff are terrific, friendly, warm and welcoming. Harry B is very happy to recommend The Lamb and Flag in Welney, although I took a chance for a table, be sure to book to avoid disappointment. Enjoy!

We are very lucky to count The Lamb & Flag’ as one of our local pub restaurants and we couldn’t ask for better. We moved to the area a year ago and was looking for a special place to eat for a special occasion and thought we’d give it a try. It was so worth it and have returned many times. The welcome is always friendly and the food has always been amazing, with a varied menu, suitable for both a special meal and a spur of the moment lunch.

Visited recently for a birthday lunch with friends . It was not our first visit and seemed the ideal choice for a friendly relaxed lunch , we were not wrong .

Ordered scampi and chips and ham egg and chips. The service was fast and very friendly. The food was amazing and you got a lot too ! A lovely restaurant with a friendly atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit if you are known the area.

We have been holidaying in the surrounding area and we have eaten here 3 times this week. The 1st time was on Tuesday night which was their Steak and Fish and Chip Night. The steaks were great and you could not argue with the price. Mid week we called in for a light snack at lunchtime. The sandwiches were spot on and were made with lovely fresh bread. Sunday we decided to have Sunday Lunch to finish off the week. You could choose from Beef, Lamb, Pork or Turkey. These came with a lovely choice of FRESH and HOT vegetables. We topped it all off with 2 very tasty desserts. The diet starts next week!!!!!

I come home from the USA frequently for a month at a time and I like to have a real Sunday lunch and so we go to different venues each week in search of the perfect Sunday lunch. Well our search is over. The Sunday lunch at the Lamb and Flag in welney has it all. The food is delicious the servings are huge the staff are so nice the land lord has a great sense of humor and the pub has a true ambiance that takes you back to when a pub was ac pub. My mother uses a Walker and she was able to get into the pub with her large Walker without assistance. The pub is beautiful on the inside and out. I only have one more week here before I leave again and guess where I will be having Sunday lunch back at the lamb and flag

FINALLY! A pub where you can still get just a good ol’sandwich... ahh joy!! (There are lots of other ‘gormet’ style things on the menue too!)

We had a lovely family meal sat out in the sun. Excellent food quality and service. Even the granddaughters whom are fussy eaters enjoyed it. We arrived as they had just finished cooking but did accommodate our request albeit a limited menu.

I’m not a huge roast dinner fan but the roast here could change my mind. Each of the 4 of us had something different and I would have settled for any of them. Everything was piping hot and cooked to perfection. Am filled to the brim but i’m still eyeing up the desserts.

Whilst visiting the village, we called in for lunch and a pint.

Been here a few times never disappointed, great service and great food , one of the best parts of the customer service was we were only ask once by one person is everything ok , this was great not only could we chat and eat but we were not getting asked just as we put food in to eat , it was a great meal , now the lighter nights are drawing in makes the drive a nice and safe one , well done guys

what a wonderful pub there were 4 of us and 1 child went here on a Friday night it was very busy but service was good the food is excellent the atmosphere very cosy . Does get busy so you need to book.

We must have eaten at the Lamb and Flag four dozen times in the four years we've been back in the area and, frankly, have never been disappointed. We ate there twice this last week, with Saturday evening's meal being easily the best of two very good ones. It's time for us to move on so we will no longer be regular guests two or three times a week in the Bar, so we say goodbye with some sadness. On Thursday we took some friends for lunch - really good - but on Saturday the star chef (Kyle) turned out two superb fish meals, with the top team on the bar. A memorable evening. We wish all the best to Dennis, Gina, Kyle, Ryan and the team at this very good pub restaurant.

We found this pub after an Internet search. A friendly landlord greeted us with a fire blazing in the grate. Dogs welcomed. Menu simple but food well cooked and delicious. Great atmosphere of locals enjoying food, drink and company. Highly recommended.

Excellent Sunday lunch today, very good value for money would definitely go again. Proper home cooked food and desserts were lovely.

Forget where you'd normally go, this pub serves the best roast dinner bar none, beef pork lamb or turkey all supplied by Sargents butchers with all the trimmings served with extra gravy, Mmmmmm, simple the best, but make sure you book in advance though as it's always popular. The pub also has a great gin selection and good draft beer and lager all served with a great atmosphere.Steak night on a Tuesday is well worth a visit too, in fact Monday to Saturday the menu is extensive and the food beautiful all at a reasonable price, pay the lamb and flag a visit you won't be disappointed.

Went out to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the misses. Really warm and friendly how ever our first time experience where let down by the steaks. Asked for 1 to be rare which came out medium, other asked for Med to rare which came out as med to well done. When trying to get served to ask for the bill, stood at the bar for 5-10 minutes but the staff liked to serve the locals first even when they just walked through the door.

We visited here with another couple one Saturday evening on the recommendation of numerous friends. We booked a table for 6pm amd were seated on the dot. We found the food was nice, service was good and drinks reasonably priced. The open fires were a nice touch. All in all we had a good evening and will visit again.

This was our second visit; our first was for lunch, this time dinner. We arrived a few minutes late due to the weather but we got a warm welcome from the staff behind the bar. We sorted our wine order and it was brought to our table with menus by one of the bar staff. My wife chose a prawn cocktail starter and I the fenland chicken with a dip. Our main course, we each chose off the specials board, was the beef suet pudding and the desserts being the syrup pudding and the crumble.

This is a lovely friendly local pub. We visited after spending day at WWT Welney and we all had great food. Pub has open fires and really welcoming and friendly.

We got totally lost (my fault) but we were so glad we eventually found The Lamb and Flag. My son had booked lunch for us and we were shown to our table by the welcome open fire with a friendly greeting.

Had a lovely family meal here. The food was good , however ,more choice for vegetarians would have been appreciated . Friendly atmosphere and service. It would have been a 5 star review , however we did have to tolerate a cold draft from the door in the restaurant .

Went out for a date night to the Lamb and Flag. Had a pleasant evening, the pub has a nice atmosphere, very oldie worldie in a nice location. The meal was good but nothing special.

Have been here many times for Sunday lunch and evening meals. Sorry to say but won’t go back. Had late lunch this Sunday. Place was very busy. Plates were extremely hot as if meat, potatoes and Yorkshire pud being kept in oven for some time. I don’t know if this contributed to the tough meat (beef) and not too good roasties. Veg was ok but broccoli mushy. I took most of beef home for my dogs. Husband did say his was ok. Not once were we asked if food was ok or if we wanted another drink. Left before being offered dessert. Usually we spend a longer time over meal and drinks but couldn’t wait to leave and get home.

What can I say apart from I am so very disappointed by the food served on this visit. My partner and I had to book a table much later than we usually like to eat as they were busy Pre Christmas, but when we arrived they were nearly empty. The service at the bar was very good as usual.

First time in the area so didn't know what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised by the cosy ambience, varied menu and friendly service. The Fenmans steak pie which my friend chose was delicious, full of tender meat, and very substantial, and even the "lighter" lunch -baked Camenbert- which I opted for, proved to be a hearty portion. Good food, well presented, and even a cosy log fire to brighten up a dull November day.

Fabulous home cooked food. Will be returning. Had a pram which they accommodated. Only disappointment we couldn't fit pudding in.

Went there on a recommedation and was not disappointed. The food and service were very good. Good old pub food in a nice friendly atmosphere. I love fish and chips and although a simple dish really shows the craft of the chef.

Went to the Lamb and Flag for lunch today after a 3 to 4 month absence. It was fantastic. Paul the man incharge behind the bar was welcoming as usual with the right amount of banter, the atmosphere severely suffers when he leaves for his afternoon break. Food grear, good portions and very tasty. Glad we returned

very good meal steak cooked just right. All other meals where very well received, scampi and chips were a large portion, chicken also a large portion but very tasty. The burgers were huge, but everything was well presented and very tasty.

We first tried the Lamb & Flag for lunch, both the service and food, meat pie and lasagna followed by deserts cheesecake and caramel apple pie was so good we decided to return a week later for dinner. Once again the greeting was very welcoming, we chose our wine which was taken to our table and menus given and we were left to peruse in comfort. We chose starters from the menu and mains from the specials board, so much choice it was so hard to decide. The starters prawns & chicken were lovely and so was the main courses suet mince puddings, well cooked and good portion sizes. We couldn't leave without again sampling their deserts, crumble and sponge, with very good quality ice cream. This is a country pub with a warm welcome. a very good chef and delightful staff. We will certainly be back very soon.
